Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade remains very similar with a big pure Texel ewe selling to £160 from MP&P Berry, Stalmine with other Texel x ewes to £124 from PJ&SM Woodhouse, Forton. Strong sheep continue to sell in excess of the £100 mark. Mule ewes peaked at £98 from Myerscough College with others to £95 from the same home. Followed by £94 from WJ&E Woodhouse, Nateby. Plenty of strong ewes sold around the ninety-pound mark. Horned ewes saw Jacobs to £76 from KP Dagger, Catterall. Dalesbreds sold to £69 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East.

Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs at Lancaster saw an entry of 684 forward, selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg. Heavy weight well fleshed lambs continue to be a good trade with 65kg Texels selling to £148 from W&D Bradley, Goosnargh. Heavy weight Texel lambs from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough sold to £146 and £138. The consignment from JET & AAE Hull, Winmarleigh sold to £134 and £129. Also at £134 were Texel lambs from J&CG Redmayne, Samlesbury followed by £132 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale. Best confirmation lambs sold in the region of 300p/kg, firstly from Ian Richardson, Catforth followed by 295p/kg from M Allen, Carnforth and JS Horner, Ingleton. Well fleshed standard weighted lambs saw Texels regularly sold around the 250p/kg mark.

Again another large entry of culls forward with sows selling to £65 and 27p/kg and boars to £80 and 26p/kg. 105 weaners were presented at todays sale with a large number of buyers looking to purchase, well-bred large whites from J. GE Heseltine & Son, Skipton sold to £50 with others at £43. Younger weaners sold to £19 for Duroc x from Dyfodol Pedigree Livestock, Babell who sold others at £16. We politely ask pig vendors to pre-enter pigs to assist with canvassing buyers, over half the entry today was unentered, help us to help you!!

North West Auctions weekly sale of prime lambs had an entry in excess of 1200 forward, the offering today saw a full variety with well fleshed lambs continuing to be in the strongest demand. J36 continues to be renowned for a strong trade for heavy well finished lambs, they peaked today at £150 for a Suffolk lamb from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland which David very kindly donated to the crook YFC charity being purchased by John Geldard on behalf of Plumgarths Farm Shop. Heavy weight Beltex lambs sold to 285p/kg or £139 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. This was followed by heavy weight Texels twice selling to £138 from D Wightman & A Mason, Milnthorpe with others to the same price from JB Jackson & Son, Grange Over Sands. Plenty of heavy weight lambs selling around the £130 mark. The trade for handy weighted lambs very much depending on finish and quality with good types selling in excess of 250p/kg, leaner lambs were financially punished. The overall market average was 229p/kg.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Sale of all classes of Pigs, Tuesday 13th September 2022.

An abundance of prime pigs today sold to a fast trade from start to finish with a top price of £210 for a trio of Pietrain x saddlebacks from J Stott, Kingsland. This was followed by JM Navesey, Blackburn selling large white x hogs at £178 and gilts at £155. Other pens of well finished pigs nicely selling at £110- £125 and 95p/kg-115p/kg with an overall market average of 114p/kg.

The fortnightly sale of store lambs at Lancaster sold to an overall market average of £80.54, the consignment of Beltex x store lambs from Ian Richardson led the way selling to £92 and £90. The run of Texel cross Mules sold to £85 and £83.50 from Myerscough College with Dutch Spotted x to £82.50 from the same home.

A consignment of goats from GG&MA Long, Ulverston sold to £88.

Cull rams were lacking in any power and strength this week, selling to £122 from Texels, with Romneys to £117. All 22 rams sold averaged £81.

708 cull sheep forward today continue to sell to a strong and competitive trade with several customer ring side looking for ewes suitable for future finishing. No real heavy ewes forward today however a top price of £148 was achieved for a pen of Texel x from E Dodgson, Kendal closely followed by a pen of Lleyn achieving £142 from RJ&R Holden, Millom. Stronger well fleshed ewes today generally achieving £115-£135 depending on breed and quality. Mule ewes sold to £112 from M&R Stirzaker, Milnthorpe with Mashams to £97 from JE Atkinson, Milnthorpe. All Mules and Mashams forward averaged £97. Pure hill ewes sold to £96 for Cheviots from J Potter, Orton. Dales breds to £90 from BD Gill, Ingleton, Swaledales to £86 from TA&JA Dixon, Selside and Rough Fells £87 from CP Bateman, Docker.

North West Auctions Lancaster were proud to host its annual show and sale of 1500 Mule gimmer lambs, consisting of a large quantity of NEMSA lambs. There was plenty of strong tupping lambs on offer today with a good ringside of buyers from local and far away. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Andrew Geary, Milton Keynes and Derek Clarke, Barnacre who we thank for their time and expertise. A special mention goes to our sale sponsor Wadland Finance. The Alf Burrow cup for the champion pen of ten Mule gimmer lambs was awarded to T Ayrton & Son, Over Wyresdale which went on the sell for £175. The first prize pen of twenty was awarded to W&A Cornall, Barnacre which went on to sell for £155. Top pens of ten were in big demand with plenty of people looking to purchase good quality breeding sheep. The sale peaked at £180 on three occasions from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead, B&SE Carter, Ellel and W&A Cornall, Barnacre. Other leading prices saw AC&K Pye, Abbeystead sell to £172, A&L Huddleston, Wray to £162 and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale to £160. Plenty more pens of strong tupping lambs sold between the £130-£150 mark. The overall market average was £120.33. The fifty pound prize for the vendor with the highest average for a run of fifty lambs, not to include a prize winning pen was awarded to WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale selling fifty lambs to average £143.20.

70 calves forward sold to the usual strong trade at J36, with British Blue bulls leading the way selling to £425 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale with others to £410 from JW&TE Sharpe, Lyth. Native bred bull calves continue to be well bid for with Aberdeen Angus’s selling to £245 from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck. A younger show of heifer calves were forward with British Blues selling to £280 from A Pickthall, New Hutton, other British Blue heifers sold to £220 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Outside of the show, trade was buoyant for well bred and finished cattle with harder summered cattle meeting less demand. Leading the way today was a shapey Limousin heifer from AR&BR Thompson, Selside selling to £1700. Strong British Blue heifers sold to £1690 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green. A fantastic run of 13-15 month old Limousin bullocks from TA Chapman & Son, sold to £1420. Limousin yearling bullocks sold to £1380 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with the best regularly selling at the £1250 and £1300 mark. New customers around the ring ensured the heifer trade was sharp from start to finish, with the best end regularly over the £1400 mark. British Blues sold to £1490 from MJ&JM Winn, Burneside. Limousin sold to £1490 from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside. A few store bulls forward, sold to a straight trade. Limousin sold to £1130 from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite and Parthenaise to £1100 from S Geldard, Ulverston.

The catalogue entry of 500 store cattle saw a full ring side of buyers from near and fair, ensuring vendors left with a smile of their face. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr David Moorhouse who we thank for his time and expertise. The show line up of cattle was a credit to all the vendors, after much time and deliberation the judge awarded the championship rosette to the first prize British Blue bullock which went on to sell for £1580 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Rounding off a brilliant day for the Winn family, they were also awarded the reserve champion rosette for the 1st prize Limousin bullock selling to £1560.

Closely followed by another pure Limousin from NW&EM Mason & Son, Middleton achieving 224.5p/kg with a British Blue x achieving 221.5p/kg from GH Jones, Ambleside. Heavy well fleshed beef cows were regularly 195p/kg-220p/kg with cows suitable for finished 175p/kg-195p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 191.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from JA&DE Batty & Son, Burneside. Holstein Friesian selling to 174.5p/kg from EA&E Lund & Son, Nether Kellet. OTM heifers sold to a top price of 211.5p/kg and £1264 for a British Blue x from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite. Dairy heifers sold to 197.5p/kg and £1194 for a Swedish Red from A&B Pickthall, Milnthorpe. The weekly sale of calves saw a bit more life in the trade around the ring with more buyers looking to rear calves, the consignment of Charollais bull calves from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale led the way selling to £440, £410 and £370. A British Blue weanling bull calf from SHS&HJ Raby, Preesall sold to £400 and £340. Other prices for British Blue bull calves sold to £310 and £300. Aberdeen Angus calves sold to a top of £320 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. British Blue heifers peaked at £300 from JT&B Fox, Quernmore. Plenty of beef calves sold in to mid to late two hundreds.

The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster had an entry of in excess of 200 forward that saw strong short keep cattle in big demand selling to a strong trade. Simmental bullocks led the way selling to £1630 from TJ Lloyd Farm, Settle with other Simmental bullocks to £1600 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. This was followed by other Simmental bullocks to £1500 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. Charollais bullocks peaked at £1480 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton followed by £1440 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. British Blue bullocks peaked at £1460 for a pen of three from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale followed by £1430 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Native bullocks always meet plenty of demand in Lancaster with the consignment from TJ Lloyd Farm, Settle leading the way selling Aberdeen Angus’s to £1500 and Herefords to £1480. Other leading prices saw Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1480 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton followed by others to £1470 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. Plenty more pens of strong bullocks regularly sold around the £1400 mark.

The heifer trade peaked at £1550 for a pair of Limousins from TE JS SA Curruthers, Underbarrow. This was followed by other Limousin heifers to £1400 from WJ&L Barker, Arkholme. British Blue heifers sold to a top of £1380 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. This was followed by £1360 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellett who topped he Angus heifer trade at £1360. Forward well fleshed dairy bullocks were in big demand, peaking at £1300 for a pen of three black and whites from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell with others to £1290 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton and £1250 from G Atkinson & Son, Caton. Montbeliardes sold to £1290 from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling. The autumn show for pens of four bullocks saw the first prize rosette awarded to J Lamb, Old Glasson with a pen of 23 month old British Blue bullocks selling to £1340.

Beef cows sold to 197.5p/kg for a Limousin x from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton with British Blues to 171.5p/kg from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore. Top grossing cow today was a Fleckvieh from B&AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale achieving £1743 who sold others at £1635. All cull cows averaged £1089.

A single cull bull today sold to 139.5p/kg and £1251 for a Limousin from W Richardson & Son, Kendal.

Land Auction, Sale Result Thursday 15th September 2022

NWA Property and professional conducted an evening auction of 2.36acres of meadow and pasture land which is situated at Milnthorpe. This land attracted keen interest from a full room of ‘lifestyle’ purchases alongside local agriculturally interested parties. This land saw a successful final bid of £34,000.
