Prime Lambs

Lancaster Monday morning saw the trade less, as seen at many markets towards the end of the previous week with an overall averaged of 229p/kg for 937 lambs forward. Heavy weighted lambs continue to add up best, peaking at £138 from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham for Texel lambs who also sold heavy weight Suffolks to £129. Cheviots topped at £130 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof. Plenty of pens sold heavy weight lambs regularly in the one hundred and thirties. Heavy weight upland lambs saw Mashams to £122.5 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East and Mules to £118 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington. Better quality lambs sold to 285p/kg or £130 from AG Butler, Hambleton.

Cast Sheep

All buyers were present for cast sheep today which saw a sharper trade. Charollais rams sold to £140 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley who also sold Texel x ewes to £128. A run of Texel x ewes from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof sold to £127 and £120. Mule ewes peaked at £108 from WJ Standen, Daisy Bank with other Mule ewes to £104 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Horned ewes peaked a £72 from G Blacklidge, Chorley followed by Swaledales to £70 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 13th December 2022.

Prime Lambs

A slightly reduced entry of prime lambs were forward at J36, as a result of the recent change in weather. Well finished lambs of all weights and breeds continue to sell to a premium with under finished lambs a more cautious trade and perhaps worth more in the buoyant store market.

Lambs today sold to a top price of £150 for heavy weight Blue Faced Leicester from R&PE Hargreaves & Son, Barley closely followed by heavy weight Texels selling to £149 from HR&HV Knowles, Docker and LE&A Ridding, Selside. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to £146 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellett with Charollais to £144 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth. Well bred and well finished lambs continued to sell to a premium with Beltex lambs to £136 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet and Texels to £146 from TA Teasdale, Grange Over Sands. Hill bred lambs sold to £123 for Cheviots from S Crawford, Staveley with Mules achieving £114 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside, Swaledales to £95 from FE&CE Hodgson, Pennington and Rough Fells to £93 from AEA Harrison, Kentmere.

Top pence per kilo of 297p/kg was achieved for a Beltex x lamb from T&PL Edmondson Ltd, Kirkby in Furness with other pure bred continentals 265-280p/kg. Well finished first x lambs sold to 264p/kg for Texel x from J Gibson, Kendal with Charollias’s achieving 255p/kg from RR&JA Knowles, Docker and Suffolks to 251p/kg from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Mule sold to 231p/kg from TA&JA Dixon, Selside with Rough Fells to 211p/kg from GR Parkinson, Whinfell and Swaledales to 209p/kg from J Longworth, Kentmere. An increased number of lightweight lambs being predominantly hill breeds selling to £80.50 from V&S Inman, Coniston for a ring full of Swaledales. An overall market average today 233p/kg.

Cast Sheep

Cull sheep saw a top price of £170 for Texel ewes from AR&BJ Thompson, Poppy Farm with generally a plainer show of ewes forward today. Other heavy weight ewes sold to £132 for Suffolks from J Park, Kendal and Texels to £130 from J Woodburn &Partners, Ulverston. A large proportion of Mule and Mashams ewes were forward today which saw North Country Mules sell to £118 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, Mashams to £94 from JA Bennet, Longsleddale and Cheviot Mules £90 from PA&D Slater, Garstang. Pure hill ewes sold to £108 for Cheviots from J Allonby & Son, Greyrigg, £87 for Rough Fells from W Beck & Son, Tebay, Swaledales to £86 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington and Herdwicks to £58 from S Crawford, Staveley All ewes today averaged £70.50 with over half the entry being pure hill breeds. No real power and strength in the cull rams today with those forward selling to £148 for a Texel from WH&G Hodgson, Patton with other stronger rams sold between £105-£120. Pure hill rams sold to £110 for Rough Fells from I&J Mallinson, Selside. 28 cull rams forward today averaged £98.68.

All classes of calves saw a keen interest from a full ring side of buyers resulting in a sharp trade. Month old Blue bulls sold to £310 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. With other young Blue bulls selling to £290 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. This good home also topped the heifer section selling Blue heifers to £280 with HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick selling Blue heifers to the same price. A very young show of black & whites forward with new buyers around the ring ensuring a nice trade was seen. Three week old bulls from MH&SJ Morris, Allithwaite sold to £40.

Calf Top Prices: British Blue: £310 Borrans Farm, £290 £280 Sunny Bank, £280 Elm Tree Farm, £265 Sunny Bank, £220 Borrans Farm. Angus: £90 £70 Elm Tree Farm. Friesian: £40 Wraysholme Tower.

Store Lambs

A few less store lambs forward with the freezing weather conditions. Just over 2000 store lambs forward, averaging £68.17. Trade today saw nicely bred and well fleshed lambs as well as lambs that had come customed to hard feed once again saw keen interest from all buyers with smaller leaner lambs harder to place. Beltex lambs led the way selling to £105 for a full pen from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Who also sold other to £100. Texel lambs sold to £104 from J&M Wilson, Selside. With other pens of Texels selling to £95 twice, RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale and AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Good pens of Texel cross lambs were regularly selling to the high £80’s into the early £90’s. Medium bred fit continental lambs were selling between the £75£80 mark. Mule lambs saw a top of £90 from SJ&M Richardson & Son, Lupton. With other strong pens selling to £88 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Medium mule lambs were selling around the £75 mark. Hill bred lambs saw Herdwicks sell to £75 from DH Holmes, New-on-Lune with this home selling a full pen of cheviots selling to £66. Rough Fells selling to £62.50 from J Hodgson, Penrith. Swaledales sold to a top of £50.50 twice from the same home of SG Sibson, Bassenthwaite. The next sale of store hoggs is on Thursday 12th January 2023, please advise the office with entries.

Calves

The weekly sale of calves saw reduced number forward this week following on from a big number last week. Trade was slightly sharper for younger calves. Weanling Angus calves from Ian Richardson, Catforth saw Angus bulls to £360 and £275. British Blue bull calves sold to £290 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe followed by £260 from HJ Robinson, Milnthorpe with plenty more beef bulls in the early two hundreds. British blue heifers sold to £215 from J Bargh and Son. Month old dairy bull calves sold to £95 from D & K Haworth, Hambleton.

Heifer Calves Top Prices: Angus: £265 West View Farm. British Blue: £215, £170 North Farm, £145 Elm Tree Farm. Limousin: £100 Rose Farm.

Stirks

The monthly sale of stirks at Lancaster was moved forward due to the Christmas period. A smaller entry forward saw a very good trade from start to finish in which more could have easily been sold. The consignment from D & J Hay, Cockerham lead the way selling yearling Charolais bullocks to £900 and eight month old British Blue bullocks to £860 with fifteen month old heifers to £840. The consignment 11month old British Blues from G Hodkinson, Great Eccleston selling Bullocks to £800, Bulls to £800 and heifers to £730. Yearling British Blue heifers sold to £745 from Matthew Atkinson, Burneside with others to £715 from I Atkinson and Son, Warton. Younger stirks saw six month old Hereford bullocks to £655 from R & A Jolleys, Cabus

Store cattle sold to a top price of £1760 for a trio of Limousin x steers from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Other heavy well fleshed steers sold to £1700 for Herefords from G Sagar, Caton with others at £1600 from JW Atkinson, Bentham. British Blues sold to £1550 from RC Billington & Son, Garstang and Charollais x to £1530 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton. Dairy bred steers sold to £1300 for a Fleckvieh from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore and Friesian to £1290 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. All steers forward today averaged £1246. Heifers saw a top price of £1550 from a British Blue from RC Billington & Son, Garstang with a pen of four from Norbreck Genetics, Cockerham achieving £1460 followed by another pen of three from RC Billington & Son selling to £1450. Native sired heifers sold to £1410 for Hereford x from JW Atkinson, Bentham with Aberdeen Angus’s to £1350 from Norbreck Genetics, Cockerham. All heifers forward today averaged £1133.

The concluding sale of cull cows at NWA Lancaster saw an overall market average of 162p/kg with a full ring side of buyers competing for all classes and types with many leaving unable to fulfil orders. The sale peaked at 199.5p/kg for a British Blue from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with other beef cows achieving 197.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JA&G Gardner, Treales and British Blue from JA&F Nutter, Clitheroe. Well bred beef cows regularly sold at 180-190p/kg with a keen interest for cow suitable for finishing. Dairy cows sold to a top price 191.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel who also sold a Holstein Friesian at 189.5p/kg with British Friesian selling to 177.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe and WT Whitaker & Son, Nether

Kellet. Top grossing cow today was a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Son, Ellel achieving £1627. OTM heifers sold to 131.5p/kg and £1423 for a Simmental from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet with dairy heifer selling 229.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe with Norwegian Reds selling to £1359 from CP&V Cowgill, Bentham. Holstein Friesian steers sold to 174.5p/kg and £1047 from H Kent, Cockerham.

Dairy Cattle

The Christmas prize show of dairy cattle at NWA Lancaster saw a high-quality entry forward with an abundance of buyers ringside all keen to secure stock from this popular fortnightly sale. Thanks must go to our sponsors Wadland Finance and Westmoreland Veterinary Group for supporting todays show classes, along side the judge Mr Luke Robinson for giving his time. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer Pennine Poppy 1652 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale which after spirited bidding was secured by the judge for £3600. The reserve champion was the Holstein Friesian heifer Milnthorpe Beckham Gloria 3 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe which sold for a final bid of £2950. The first prize cow Wyredale Attico Tulip 4 shown by MJ& H Atkinson, Quernmore achieved a final bid of £2450. A fast traded was experienced for all classes and types with vendors leaving well suited for prices achieved with an overall market average of £2365.
