Spring Lambs
More lambs forward today, with a full ring side of buyers once again at Lancaster’s Monday morning sale. A trio of Texel lambs from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham sold to a top price of £180 with other full pens of Texel lambs from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley sold to £162. Heavy Suffolk x lambs from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham sold to £185. Best quality lambs were regularly selling at 350p/kg plus, topping at 370p/kg form D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Prime Hoggs
Meated hoggs once again met strong demand with Beltexs selling to £193 from T Taylor, Woodplumpton with this good home selling other pens to £187. Texels topped at £173 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Heavy Mules would be the strongest trade seen for some time with 56kg Mule hoggs from S Ayrton, Thurnham selling to £165 and other heavy Mules selling to £160 from GS Lander, Warrington. An overall averaged of 289p/kg was achieved.

Cast Sheep
100 cast ewes were forward with meat and strength once again selling to high demand. Cast rams topped the sale today at £172 for Texels from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Texel ewes sold to £164 from J Sanderson, Halton with many Continental heavy ewes selling at the £140-£150 mark. A pen of five Mule ewes from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton sold to £138 with the best Mules regularly selling at £130 plus. Strong hill ewes were regularly selling at £100-£110, with Cheviots selling to £114.

Spring Lambs
More bite in the spring lamb trade today, with many more needed to fulfil the orders of our ringside of eight active spring lamb buyers. An overall average of 340p/kg was achieved. Lambs sold to £180 for Suffolks from R&J Dodgson, Natland with Charollais selling to £177 from RJ Stott, Stainton and Texels to £175 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Many heavy weight spring lambs were regularly selling at the £165 to £170 mark. No real butcher type lambs were forward today with the best on offer selling to 360p/kg plus, topping at 370p/kg from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Sheep With Lambs At Foot
500 breeding sheep were put before new and returning customers, achieving a flying trade from start to finish. The flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal achieved plenty of interest which saw aged Texel ewes with twin Texel lambs sell to £310, with others selling to £305 from the same home. A full pen of four crop Mule ewes with Texel lambs sold to £250.
Shearlings saw the best Texels with twins sell to £280 from JL Frith, Shap with others to £268 from L Beck, Heversham. More hill ewes were on offer today with saw Cheviot shearling with single lambs sell to £175 from JE Atkinson, Ulverston with older Cheviot ewes with singles selling to £145 from WG Farms, Cockerham.

Prime Hoggs
A two-tier trade was seen for all hoggs forward with meat keenly sort after and a strong demand, the leaner types / store hoggs meet realisation. Heavy weight hoggs were once again achieving good returns, selling to £175 for Suffolks from GR Wilson, Natland, Charollais to £172 from TA Teasdale, Cartmel and Texels to £170 from RT Colbear, Appleby. Many meated hoggs were regularly selling at £150 to £160. Hill hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £157 from LA&M Lambert, Lupton with other Cheviots selling to £154 from AA Bentham, Dent. Mules sold to £129 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Scotch hoggs selling to £112 from M&YS Barker, Halton. All hoggs will be needed in the upcoming weeks, to meet demand for the upcoming festivals.

A mixed entry of cull ewes sold to a fast and competitive trade with buyer competing for every sheep from beginning to end. Heavy ewes sold to £163 for a Hampshire from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor with Texels to £160 from JA&KJ Allen, Ings and others at £158 from A&B Fell, Millom. First cross ewes sold to £164 for Suffolk x from JB Airey, Kendal with Texel x to £146 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg and others at £145 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Hill bred ewes sold to £152 for Cheviots from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with others selling at £140 from G GU&D Swarbrick, Meathorp and J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg. Swaledales sold to £114 from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with Scotch Blackface to £112, Rough Fells £106 and Herdwicks to £102. A large entry of medium Mules today, sold to £126 from JA&ME Mawson, Orton with others to £120 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell and £118 MA Barnes, Whinfell. Blue Faced Leicester’s sold to £156 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston.
Cull rams sold to £180 for a Texel from M&YS Barker, Halton with Cheviots to £145 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg and Bluefaced Leicesters to £136 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Customers are encouraged to continue to sell cull ewes and take advantage of the current strong trade.

Another high-quality entry of calves saw all types sell to a fast trade, with British Blue x bulls selling to £590 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Others achieved £555 from JP&C Robson, Garstang who also sold to £490. Younger rearing bull calves sold to £445 for British Blue x from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham and £335 from Lawson Farm Ltd, Cockerham, others were generally £270 to £310. Native sired bull calves sold to £505 for an Aberdeen Angus x from CJ&HM Parry, Cockerham with others at £465 from W&G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock. Nicer rearing bull calves sold to £380 from Lawson Farm, Cockerham. Well reared Holstein Friesian bull calves sold to £270 from Drinkall Bros, with younger sorts from the same good home achieving £180 and £170. Heifer calves sold to £460 for a beautiful Aberdeen Angus x heifer from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. British Blue x sold to £425 from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham with other at £400 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Lancaster Auction Mart continues to produce headline prices at its weekly store cattle sale, with 22 month old steers sold to £2080 for a Charolais x and Limousin x from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Closely followed by a ring full of Charolais x from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer achieving £2020. British Blue x steers sold to £1840 from KG&LM Park, Witherslack with other well fleshed and well grown Continental steers to £1840 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof, £1820 EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet and £1800 GT&C Blezard, Conder Green. Native sired steers saw Hereford x sell to £1760 from KG&LM Park, Witherslack with Aberdeen Angus x achieving £1660 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. An increased number of yearling steers sold to keen grazing interest, selling to £1290 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole with others at £1240 from JA&ME Mawson, Orton. Dairy bred steers peaked at £1430 for British Friesians from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Heifers achieved a top price of £1720 for a British Blue x from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. Closely followed by a Charolais x from JA&F Nuttall, Clitheroe achieving £1710. Other well grown heavy Continental heifers were regularly £1400-£1550. Native sired heifers sold to £1660 for an Aberdeen Angus x from W&D Bradley, Preston with others at £1510 from J Tattersall, Leyland and Hereford x to £1460 from GJT&V Parkinson, Preesall. A nice entry of feeding bulls saw Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sell to £1900 with others at £1850 and £1760. 14 month old Holstein Friesian sold to £1080 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre.

OTM Cattle
The cull cow trade at NWA Lancaster can only be described as red hot, with all cows today averaging 210p/kg. Beef cows sold to 269.5p/kg on two occasions for Limousin x from RG Woodhouse, Scorton and KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Other Continental beef cows regularly sold at 245p/kg to 260p/kg. Medium beef cows suitable for finishing generally achieving 220p/kg to 240p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 249.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton with an entry of predominately parlour type cows selling to 207.5p/kg on several
occasions from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal and RG&B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale. Others were generally 190p/kg to 205p/kg, with the leanest types 165p/kg to 190p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing cow today was a Limousin from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead achieving a mouth watering £2420, with others from the same home at £2281 and endless well finished cows between £1500 and £1900. Dairy cows topped at £1601 for a heavy weight Holstein Friesian from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal.
OTM heifers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1624 or a Charolais x from JA&F Nutter, Clitheroe with dairy heifers selling to 244.5p/kg and £1393 for a Holstein Friesian from J&R Waller, Killington. An outstanding show of both overaged and clean steers saw a top price of 289.5p/kg achieved for a British Blue x from MA&JA Winn, Burneside with Charolais x selling to 279.5p/kg from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead and British Blue to 274.5p/kg from T&B Burrow, Slyne. Top grossing being a Beef Shorthorn from J Bargh, Morecambe achieving £2008.
