North West Auctions were proud to host the Annual Show and Sale of 336 pedigree Texel rams and females on behalf of the North West Texel Breeders Club. The sale continues to go from strength to strength gaining a strong reputation amongst breeders, attracting purchasers from far and wide. This years sale boasted one of the strongest pre-sale shows seen at North West Auctions with credit going to the vendors for the quality on offer. J36 Rural Auction Centre: North West Texel Breeders Club Annual Show & Sale of Texel Rams and Females, Sunday 14th August 2022.
The Championship rosette was awarded to a much admired ram lamb from M Evans of the Rhaeadr flock. This ram lamb Rhaeadr Fire Power sired by Sportsmans Enforcer and dam sired by Teiglum Young Gun, with the dam being full sister to the £125,000 Rhaeadr Best of the Best. It went on to smash all previous records at the North West Texel Breeders Club sale at J36 selling to 7500gns, purchased by H Griffies of the Cairngryffe flock. A strong class of 26 ram lambs saw the second prize rosette awarded to AJ Clark with Teiglum Fletcher which was sired by Knock Eastwood and went on to sell at 2400gns. The Reserve Championship rosette was awarded to GL Riby of the Stonehills flock with a Craig Douglas Dancer sired gimmer shearling, this stylish sheep attracted much interest selling to 1500gns to JS Lodge. The first prize shearling ram was awarded to Whitbarrow Excellent from Harry Geldard which went on to sell at 900gns. Taking the first prize rosette in the ewe lamb class was Leigh Smith and Joanne Huddart of the Majestic flock with a powerful and bright lamb sired by Strawfrank Cardhu which went on to sell for 1050gns. A buoyant trade throughout the sale, with buyers forward from nationwide ensuring a successful clearance rate of 86%. A successful day for the Uppermill flock from David J McKerrow peaking at 2300gns with Uppermill Fabio sired by Ettrick Earthquake, purchased by Proctors Farms with others from the same home selling to 2200gns with Uppermill Fernando, sired by the same Ettrick ram. This sale has a strong reputation for being a strong gimmer sale peaking at 2000gns from H Griffies of the Cairngryffe flock which was sired by Kingspark Diamond and out of one of the best breeding lines. Ewe lambs peaked at 1750gns from Leigh Smith and Joanne Huddart of the Majestic flock after some intense internet bidding. Shearling rams peaked at 1300gns with Cambwell Eejit from T&R Laird with this Waen Déjà Vu sired ram. Shearling rams sold to 1300gns and averaged £771, Ram lambs sold to 7500gns and averaged £707, Gimmer shearlings sold to 2000gns and averaged £619, and Ewe lambs sold to 1750gns and averaged £522.

Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs at Lancaster had an entry of over 600 forward which with were met with plenty of demand with eight active buyers forward, all looking to secure lambs with well finished lambs in the strongest demand and an overall market average of 245p/kg achieved. Heavy weight lambs continue to create plenty of competition between the buyers at Lancaster with Texel peaking at £146 from H Birkett, Overton closely followed by £145 from B&J Preston, Caton. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs sold in excess of the £130 mark. Handy weight lambs from 40-44kgs regularly sold at 250p/kg. Well finished and better confirmation ones peaking at 290p/kg for Beltexs from KA Purtill, Wigan with Texels to 285p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. More hill lambs are starting to come forward now with Mules peaking at £109 at 45kgs at from G&K Richmond, Inglewhite.

Prime Lambs The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an increasing entry of 1463 forward selling to an overall market average of 245p/kg. Well fleshed prime lambs continue to be in big demand and regularly selling in excess of 250p/kg with smaller leaner types possibly worth more in the store market. Heavy weights continued to be eagerly sought after at J36, with numerous buyers for this specification of lamb. Heavy weights peaked at £149 at 57kg with Charollais from M Moorhouse, Grange over Sands who sold 55kg Texels to £142. This was followed by other Texels to £138 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. With other heavy weight Texels to £137 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands. Suffolk lambs peaked at £141 from WP Brewer & Sons, Bleasdale. This is followed by other Suffolks to £132 from DC, D & J Taylor, Kendal. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs regularly selling round the £130 mark. Best Swaledale ewes sold to £95 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. With pens of well fleshed horned ewes selling in the £70’s and early £80’s.

Other leading prices saw Texels at £84 from Myerscough College and £83 from SE Whewell, Scorton. A consignment from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston sold Texels to £83.50 and Cheviot x’s to £83.50. North West Auctions held its annual show and sale of 1504 Mule and Continental ewes and gimmer shearlings, the pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by Wadland Finance and judged by Stuart and Ellie Garth, Bleasedale, who we thank for there time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Mules from P&M Crackles, Burrow which went on to sell for £210 purchased by the judge. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Continental or any other breed from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with a pen of Cheviot Mules which went on to sell for £230. The sale saw a two tier trade with good quality sheep in big demand with purchasers looking to buy shearlings that had lambed and been double abortion vaccinated. Second quality sheep were met with selective demand, as many purchasers were willing to pay that little bit extra for quality. Topping the trade at £320 was a pair of pedigree bred Suffolk gimmer shearlings from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. Mule gimmer shearlings peaked at £220 from JS&KM Wilson & son, Kendal with others from the same home to £200. A run of lambed Mule gimmer shearlings from M&YS Barker, Halton sold to £200 with others to £190 from the same home. The run from N Barker, Burton in Kendal sold to £195 and £190. The consignment from JK&BE Townley, Brookhouse sold to £195 with other leading prices being £190 from E Parker, Mewith. All Mule gimmer shearlings forward averaged £166.70. The summer show of calves had a nice entry of 90 calves forward, we would like to take this time to thank our sponsors Semex and Norbreck Genetics. Our pre sale judging was in the capable hands of Stan Allan, who we thank for his time and expertise. After much time and deliberation, the Champion rosette was awarded to the first prize Continental bull calf from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall, after fierce bidding this Charolais bull calf when on to achieve £530. The reserve champion went to the first price continental heifer from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack this heifer went on to achieve £320. Out of the show the calf trade was fast from start to finish with Charolais calves selling to £505 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. British Blue bulls sold to a top of £450 twice from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack with all British Blue bulls averaging £330. Limousin bulls sold to a top of £415 from WS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck. Heifer calves were a sharper trade Charolais sold to a top of £425 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall with many of the best regularly selling over the £300 mark. Dairy bred bulls sold to a top of £380 for a run of Montbeliarde bulls from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck who sold others to £250. Pure Friesian bulls topped at £250 from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. Another nice trade in the stirks section and with buyers paying a premium for these, Charolais heifers at six months old sold to £830 from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. Limousin heifers sold to £680 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill who sold a pen of Hereford bullocks to £680. Lancaster held its annual Lancaster Lads show and sale of terminal sire breeding rams. The pre sale show saw local young shepherd Daniel Pye, Abbeystead take charge of the judging. He awarded his championship rosette to the first prize Texel shearling from S&G Mellor, Stock on Trent which went on to sell for £900 with others from the same home selling to £700. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the Beltex x from A Fare, Blackpool which sold to £580. A special mention goes to the pre-sale show sponsors Wadland Finance and WCF TheFuels.sale this evening saw big powerful big confirmation tups in big demand and good to sell, a consignment of pure Texel tups from Harry Carter, Ellel sold to £900, £850 and £750. A run of Texel and Beltex x tups from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth sold to £750, £720, £680 and £620. Suffolk shearlings sold to £600 from S&G Mellor, Stoke on Trent with other Suffolk tups to £580 from RA&L Hodgson, Kendal. Aged tups saw Texel three shears sold to £480 from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale. The weekly sale of calves saw a much improved trade than seen in recent weeks, with more buyers round the ring all keen to buy. Topping the trade today was EW&RM Towers, Hornby with a weaned British Blue achieving £500 with Fleckvieh bulls to £465 from the same home. Younger British Blue bull calves saw J Bargh & Son, Heaton to £370, also achieving £370 was Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton for a British Blue bull whom also sold Aberdeen Angus bulls to £365. Heifer calves today were much sort after achieving £390 for British Blues with other British Blues from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton at £290. A good run of Limousin calves from A&L Gardner, Quernmore saw bulls to £320 and heifers to £260. A mixed bag of Friesian bull calves saw the best selling to £190 from EW&RM Towers, Hornby with lesser sorts £80 - £112. TheStirksmonthly sale of stirks at Lancaster today saw an entry of just short of a hundred forward with stronger sorts in high demand. MD Close & Son, Arkholme came out on top in both the steers and heifer section selling British Blue steers at £900 and heifers to £780. Twelve month old Aberdeen Angus steers peaked at £840 from R&J Parkinson, Preesall with other well grown Aberdeen Angus steers at £830 from G Rawlinson, Manchester. D&J Hay, Cockerham had a good day with twelve month old Hereford steers to £805. A good number of Limousin steers on the market today saw ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth sell to £760 for an eight month old with others from Jones, Cockerham at £710 with DJ Clarks, Barnacre to £685. A pen full of twelve month old solid British Friesians steers from R&J Parkinson, Preesall to £705. Aberdeen Angus heifers saw trade peak at £670 for a pen of five eleven month olds from CJ&MH Parry, Cockerham with others at £660 from Jones, Cockerham. A pair of British Blue steers from JD&GM Bracken, Garstang sold to £1620 with Aberdeen Angus from the same home to £1560. JS Clark, Catforth was not far behind with a pen of four to £1550. British Blues cows from the same good home went on to sell to 221.5p/kg or £1772.00. Native beef cows sold to a top of £1663.88 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. In the dairy department a Friesian from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby sold to £1633.88 with others from the same home achieving £1482.09.
