Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep. Monday 16th December 2024.

Prime Lambs

Monday 16th December normal business resumed at NWA Lancaster, with an increased number of lambs forward, selling to an improved trade, averaging 310p/kg. The sale peaked at £172 for Beltex cross lambs from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with heavy weight Suffolk cross to £169 from S&JE Cornthwaite, Brookhouse. Texels sold to £164 from JM&MH Frace & Son, Littledale, with other well finished heavy weight lambs generally £150 to £160. The best standard weights sold to £162 for Beltex cross from KA Purtill, Wigan. Charollais cross sold to £157 from Wellington Cragg Farms, Bay Horse. Others meeting buyers requirements were nicely £140 to £152. Lighter weight lambs sold to £134.50 for Texel cross from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof, with other better finished lambs £115 to £125. Beltex cross lambs from KA Purtill, Wigan led todays sale achieving 377p/kg, with other premium prime lambs 330p/kg to 355p/kg. The best first cross lambs were generally 305p/kg to 320p/kg, with grass finished lambs 290p/kg to 305p/kg. Heavy weights sold to 348p/kg for Beltex from J Bargh, Morecambe with light weights to 324p/kg from J Gardner, Brookhouse. Hill bred lambs sold to a top price of £157.50 for heavy weight Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof. Standard weights sold to £120 from the same good home, with others 310p/kg to 315p/kg.

Cast Sheep

Cull ewes were an exception trade, with all sold averaging £139.41. The strongest Continental sold to £220 for Texels from H Birkett & Son, Overton with others at £205 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. The best first cross sold to £170 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Mules to £168 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other strongest end ewes were £140 to £155 and medium £128 to £138. Horned ewes sold to £104 for Dalebreds. Several hill bred cull rams sold to £164 for Cheviots from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead, with others at £154 and Swaledales to £100.

Pigs

40 prime and store pigs forward today. It was once again J&JR Stott, Kingland leading the way selling gilts to £170, with PK&R Woof, Stainton next at £165. Store pigs sold to £85 from C Woodhouse, Nateby and weaners to £60 from J Collier, Oakworth.

Prime Lambs

Prime lamb trade sparkles before Christmas!

A larger show of lambs forward again this week, meets a nice increase in trade for the better end of sheep and the in-specification lambs.

Wall to wall with sheep saw an increase in average, even with a massive entry of heavy lambs- over 50% falling into this category! A further 500 lambs weighing on the very light side. The Mule trade here continues to delight vendors, with the biggest show of them through the ring to recent date.

Two very large heavy Texel lambs top the sales pound per head at £218 from PK&R Woof, Stainton. A pen of six continental lambs hit £200 from JB Airey, Kendal. PK&R Woof had a further two pair of Texels sell to £196. Cheviot lambs sold to £192.00 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside, while the Suffolk trade peaked at £190 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh.

49kg Texels from KA Purtill, Wigan sold to 365.3ppk. 47kg Beltexs from J Twigge, Lindal sold to 361.7ppk for a pen of three.

Our next sale at Junction 36 is NOT on the usual Tuesday, and instead falls on the Friday between Christmas and New Year. Friday the 27th December commencing at 1pm.

Ewes sell to £222 at NWA Junction 36.

The call for cull sheep was answered with 710 forward, averaging a superb £107, with over half the entry being leaner pure hill ewes.

Only a handful of the heavier, better end ewes today and selling to £222 for Texels from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Others were nicely £190 to £210 and the mediums £145 to £160. Heavier Cheviot Mules sold to £202, with North Country Mules £170 and others £145 to £160, medium Mules were £120 to £140 with the next draw down £105 to £118. Pure hill ewes saw Cheviots sell to £166, Herdwicks £120, Swaledale £114 and Rough Fells £110. Nice meated horned ewes were £88 to £105, mediums £75 to £85 and the leaner and lighter end £62 to £75.

A consignment of yearling goats sold at £134.

Cull rams sold to £178, with other better mediums £150 to £175, harder worked continentals were £120 to £145, with hill rams £80 to £115.

Calves

The additional sale of calves today saw all goods sell to their full potential. Aberdeen Angus cross bull calves from W&S Airey, Whittington lead the way reaching £420, with a very sweet one month old British Blue heifer from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg next at £415. Younger calves sold to £380 for British Blue bulls from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick and £260 for a twenty day old Aberdeen Angus from Colby Farms, Appleby. Dairy bulls hit £160 and £155 from AE & MK Hayhurst, Natland. Store Lambs

The concluding sale of store lambs saw all classes and types presented for sale, with buyers competing for every lot, with an overall market average of £100.20 achieved. The best continental lambs sold to a top of £145 for ¾ Beltex from R Allen, Staveley. Other strongest pens of well-drawn lambs sold to £137 for Suffolks from J&R Bell, Crook, Texel to £132 from C Head, Kendal with others £131 from A Barnes, Haversham and £129 from JA&KJ Allen, Ings. Other stronger end pens were £112 to £121, mediums keep £99 to £108, with only the smallest long-term lambs £75 to £88. Mules sold to a top of £117 from JF&SW Sutton, Longsleddale with other stronger pens £102 to £110, with medium £91 to £98. Other hill bed lambs saw Cheviots to £116 from TLB&J Knowles, Selside with others at £103 form Shuttleworth & Brown, Sedbergh. Charollais cross Herdwicks sold to £99 for a ring full from A Knowles, Broughton in Furness with Swaledale’s to £94 from Clegg & Bennet, Seathwaitee. Rough Fells sold to £88 and Herdwicks to £69.
