On Farm Dispersal Sale: Messrs Robinson Farm Sale, Saturday 15th July 2023.

National Interest at Farm Sale

On Saturday 15th July we held an onsite dispersal sale on behalf of Messrs Robinson, Longlands Farm Dalton in Furness. This sale comprised of 10 modern and vintage tractors which attracted a large crowd of local and travelled collectors and enthusiasts.

The modern tractor being a McCormick MTX140 achieved a final bid of £10,200 to a local farmer. Enthusiastic bidding for a vintage tractor saw a Massey Ferguson 135 with loader achieve, £4100, Massey Ferguson 165 £4000, Massey Ferguson 165 £3300, Massey Ferguson 35X £2800. Other vintage items included Massey Ferguson spears selling at £400, £380. Massey Ferguson rear discharge spreader £340, tractor cab £190, 3F plough £130. Plant machinery sold to £22,000 for a Rubble Master RM60, £10,000 for a CAT TH63 Telehandler and £5000 for a Thwaites Dumper. Other items of interest included a Protech post knocker selling at £4,700, McCauley Dump Trailer £4600, 4 in 1 Bucket £1020, Cement mixer £900, Diesel generator £780, Hydraulic breaker £560.

Prime Lambs

As anticipated trade was a little less on the week, which has been seen nationally. Heavy and meated lambs continue to attract plenty of interest from all buyers, with leaner types harder to place. The sale peaked at £145 for a pen of five Texel lambs from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Closely followed at £142 for Beltexs from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Many heavy lambs were selling either side of the £130 mark this morning. A shortage of the best quality butch type lambs was forward, with these types regularly selling at 320p/kg to 330p/kg. First draw hill lambs saw Mashams sell to £120 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. A consignment of milk sheep lambs sold to £135 or 274p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham.

Cast Sheep

130 ewes were forward with all types being dearer on the week, with lean ewes look best sold. Top price today was for Texels at £165 from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale with Beltexs selling to £154 twice from E Hartley, Hornby. Many pens of heavy Continental ewe regularly sold at £140 plus. Mule ewes saw a top of £114 from KA Purtill, Wigan the best Mules regularly selling at £105 to £110. More hill ewes were on offer today, with Cheviot selling to £108 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Herdwicks sold to £85 from T&ME Longton & Son, Quernmore and Dalesbred at £73 from DM Eames, Abbeystead. An overall average of £88 was achieved with half the sale being hill bred ewes.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 18th July 2023.

Prime Lambs

As seen nationally lamb numbers are a little less with 900 forward. Once again heavy and well meated lambs attracted the keenest interest from our ringside of eleven active buyers, who showed caution to under finished lambs. A wonderful run of heavy lambs from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland hit the headlines at Junction 36 today, with Texels selling to £159 for a pen of five with other pens from this home selling to £153. Suffolks sold to £152 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Beltex saw a top of £151 from Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness. Many pens of well finished heavy lambs regularly sold at £135 to £145. Medium lambs saw pens of 44kg Texels from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston sell to £135. Once again more light lambs on offer, with these needing to be full of meat to achieve maximum prices. A full ring of first cross Texel lambs at 36kg sold to £102 from Hornby Hall, Penrith. More Mule lambs on offer today with the best sell to £124 for 46kg from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other pens selling to £113 from R Laurence, Grange Over Sands. All lambs forward averaged £115.81.

Cast Sheep

Increasing number forward saw 516 today, with buyer ring side with orders to fill ensuring all sheep sold to full value. Ewes sold to £156 for a Charollais x ewe from S Mawson & Son, Orton closely followed by PK&R Woof, Stainton selling Texels at £154. Other heavy Continental x ewes regularly selling at £130 to £145. Mule sold to £128 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with others at £122 from WR Clarke & Partners, Carnforth and ST&SE Allen, Tebay. Medium Continental and Mule ewes were nicely £105 to £125, with several buyer ring side now looking for grazing ewes. Hill ewes sold to £109 for Cheviots from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon with Rough Fells achieving £105 from D Johnson, Catmel Fell and Swaledales £98 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. Buyer requiring ewes to be fit not fat and perhaps showing slight caution towards unclipped ewes.

Cull rams sold to £180 for a Charollais from S Mawson & Son, Orton who sold Texels at £160. An entry of

predominately medium rams sold at £115 to £130. 500 plus ewes are required every week to satisfy buyers demand.

Rearing and Weaned Calves

Despite many people snatching silage, there was another strong entry of weanlings and calves forward at NWA J36, with this sale continuing to attract new customers.

Rearing calves sold to £450 for a six week old British Blue x heifer from W&S Airey, Whittington with others at £390 from the same home. Simmental x heifers from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham sold to £310 with Beef Shorthorn heifers from RG&J Clark, Endmoor selling to £260. Other heifer calves were regularly £230 to £270, depending on breed and quality.

Bull calves sold to £440 for a six week old Aberdeen Angus x from W&S Airey, Whittington with JW&TE Sharpe Ltd, Lyth selling the best of their run at £395 and £390. Limousin x bulls sold to £370 from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham and R&JE Wharton & Son, Appleby. Other younger rearing bull calves sold to £305 for a Beef Shorthorn from RG&J Clark, Endmoor and British Blue x selling to £300 from Messrs Wharton & Son, Appleby with others regularly £260 to £300.

Dairy bull calves sold to £115 for a three week old Holstein Friesian from HJ Robinson & Son, Milnthorpe with other younger dairy bulls regularly £60 to £90.

Weaned calves sold to £660 for a British Blue x bull from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby who sold other at £640 and £600. Well reared recently weaned Limousin and Aberdeen Angus x heifers from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham sold at £520, with bulls at £500. Weaned dairy bulls sold to £350 for Holstein Friesians from Whitestone Farm, Penrith who sold others at £290.

A large crowd of buyers were ring side today with many leaving empty handed, 100 rearing calves are required every sale to satisfy buyer demand.

Store Cattle

A mid-summer show of store cattle was put before a busy ring side of buyers, with some going home empty handed. The trade was slightly sharper on the fortnight.

Aberdeen Angus bullocks led the way from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton selling to £1530. A pair of British Blue bullocks sold to £1480 from AJ&H Clark, Sedbergh. Limousin bullocks sold to £1420 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow with strong Continental bred bullocks regularly selling at £1300 plus. Yearling bullocks were keenly sort after with a Limousin selling to £1220 from FW Park, Windermere and Shorthorns selling to £1120 from J Turnball, Meathop. A strong heifer trade was seen throughout the sale, with Limousin selling £1245 from S&M Cooper, Leece. Charolais heifers sold to £1230 from G GU & D Swarbrick, Meathop. A run of home bred Limousin heifers from AG Riley, Nether Kellet saw his best sell to £1160 with other pens to £1150. Plenty of interest was shown for young bulls at J36, with Charolais selling to £1000 from J Miller, Claughton on Brock. 8 month old Beef Shorthorn sold to £890 from JDI &JD Boyd, Longsleddale.

OTM Cattle

Cull cows sold to 209.5p/kg for a British Blue x from I&AJ Armer, Burneside and a Norwegian Red and White from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh. Other heavy well fleshed beef and dairy cows were regularly 185p/kg to 200p/kg, with a large proportion of the sale being medium feeding types at 165p/kg to 180p/kg. Top grossing cow was a Norwegian Red and White from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh achieving £1533. Other dairy cows saw £1441 from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal and £1412 from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston.

OTM heifers sold to 199.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farm, Kendal and £1193 from M&S Blease, Carnforth. Cull bulls sold to 179p/kg from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston for a Holstein Friesian with a Beef Shorthorn from J&E Lancaster, Ulverston achieving £1550.

Calves & Weanlings

77 rearing calves sold to an ever-expanding ring side of buyers, with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved. Rearing bull calves sold to £405 for a British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang with this price also achieved by Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling a Hereford x. Stronger rearing calves sold to £390 for Aberdeen Angus x from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton with others generally £330 to £370.

Younger bull calves sold to £285 for a three week old Limousin x from RT Halhead, Cockerham with British Blue x selling to £265 from Richmond Hall Farm, Cockerham. Weaned bull calves sold to £590 (x4) for Aberdeen Angus x from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with others at £570 and £550.

Rearing heifer calves sold to £365 for a British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others at £345 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre and £320 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. Native sired heifer sold to £315 from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton with others at £290 from CR&A Baxter & Son, Middleton. Younger month old heifers sold to £255 for a British Blue x from RT Halhead, Cockerham.

Store Cattle

Another quality show of store cattle were greeted by a competitive ring side of buyers, keen to keep sheds full. Todays sale saw steers sell to a top price of £1680 for a Beef Shorthorn from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with British Blue x selling to £1590 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Closely followed by Simmental x to £1580 from EJ&P Burrow, Stroth and an Aberdeen Angus x at £1560 from A&E Clarkson, Cockerham. Other pens of stronger well bred steers were generally £1400 to £1550. Dairy steers sold to £1360 for a Norwegian Red and White from J&S Winstanley, Clifton with British Friesians selling to £1330 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. A keen interest in younger stores for farming with a ring full of twelve month steers from A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham achieving £1240. Heifers sold to £1520 for a British Blue x from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with others

at £1510 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham and Charolais x at £1500 from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer. Other strong heifers were generally £1300 to £1450. All steers today averaged £1262 and all heifers averaged £1219. Next week following store cattle will be the monthly catalogued sale of stirks and young stores, entries for the catalogue close on Monday 24th July at 12noon.

NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the leading cull cow market in the area with an overall market average of 170p/kg achieved, with 85% of the entry being dairy cows.

Dairy cows sold to a top of 209.5p/kg from JM&TJ Livsey, Inskip with others at 191.5p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and 187.5p/kg on three occasions from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham, J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were generally 175p/kg to 185p/kg with parlour types 150p/kg to 165p/kg and the leanest 85p/kg to 115p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstien Friesian from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham achieving £1811, with others at £1655 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe and £1540 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham.

Beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Limousin x from EJ&PE Burrow, Milnthorpe, with Aberdeen Angus x selling to 199.5p/kg from SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe and 191.5p/kg from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Top grossing beef cow was an Aberdeen Angus x from AK&PA Threlkeld, Inskip achieving £1453.

OTM heifers sold to 249.5p/kg and £1625 for British Blue x from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham with Holstien Friesians selling to 219.5p/kg and £1323 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe.

Steers sold to 229.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from O Butler, Kirkham with others regularly selling at 215p/kg to 230p/kg. Top grossing being a Hereford from D Burrow, Arkholme achieving £1643 with others at £1614 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn. Cull bulls sold to 189.5p/kg and £1788 for a Limousin from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall.
