J36 Rural Auction Centre: Annual Show & Sale of Rough Fell Rams, Saturday 15th October 2022.
North West Auction were proud to host the annual show and sale of Rough Fell Breeding rams on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association whom we thank for their continued support. The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by H Pigney and Son. The pre-sale judges where Aged Rams Tony Ellis, Shearling Rams Darren Douthwaite, Rams Lambs Tony Harrison and overall championship judged by Vic Guy, who we thank for their time and expertise. A special mention goes to Richard Simpson for judging the best mouth ram.
The sale commenced with aged rams with the first into the ring topping this section, Millriggs Damson which was awarded the first prize rosette in the show and went on to sell for 500gns from SW Huck, Ravestonedale. Not far behind at 400gns was a five-shear ram from S&W Dickinson, Tebay. All aged lambs forward averaged £280. A keen interest was shown by potential buyers for well grown and bred ram lambs, the sale topped with lot twenty five a marvellous tup lamb sired by Longgills Enhance consigned by MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh. Samuel Milburn was awarded the first prize ram lamb in the show, this much admired lamb was sired by High Lane Dazzler and went on to sell for 800gns. All tup lambs forward averaged £410.
The overall championship was awarded to the first prize large breeders shearling ram consigned by TLB & J Knowles, Selside with High Borrowbridge Felix. This much-admired powerful tup was sired by Black Horse Caramel and mother sired by Catholes Alarm with the dams breeding going back to the recording breaking High Cark Yankee and went onto sell for the top price of the day of 4500gns. The next call was 4200gns for High Cark Fabulous sired by Catholes Concorde which was consigned by I & J Mallinson, Selside selling to VR Guy. This was followed by High Cark Fred selling to 1400gns and High Cark Ford to 1400gns both from I & J Mallinson. At 3500gns was Catholes Flash sired by a home bred ram from MJ & JD Handley purchased by I & J Mallinson. The Capstick family of High Lane consigned a good run of tups with the tup from Ryan Capstick leading the way selling to 2900gns with High Lane Fez whom was sired by Lockbank Y2. This was followed by Brownber Finesse by Cathole Finesse selling to 2100gns and 2000gns with Brownber Fury by Catholes Destroyer from MP & A Capstick with others to 1600gns with Brownber Flame. The consignment from RA Steadman sold to a top of 2500gns with Ellergill Fred sired by High Cark Credit and Ellergill Frank to 1500gns. The consignment from NC & S Dodd saw the consignment sell to a top of 1900gns with Longgill Future sired by Holme Farm Champion and Longgill Fashion to 1800gns sired by High Cark Blizzard.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 Charmoise Hill Sheep Society Show and Sale of Rams and Females, Saturday 15th October 2022.
Charmoise Sheep sell to 800gns at opening NWA J36 Sale
North West Auctions held its first show and sale of pedigree Charmoise Hill sheep on behalf of the society which saw a full ring side of buyers in attendance from through out the Northern Counties, Scotland and Wales, all keen to secure both rams and ewes. The pre-sale show for the best pen of presented pen of sheep was kindly judged by Mr H Murray who went on to awarded the first prize rosette to a pen of shearling rams from Mr M Prince, Chesterfield with the second prize pen awarded to a pen of ewes from Mr O Roberts, Ruthin and the third prize rosette awarded to a pen of ewes from Mr W McTaggart, Hawick. Breeding rams sold to a top price of 800gns from a shearling from the Cariad flock on behalf of Ms S Duggan, Llangadog purchased by S Pickthall, Workington. 650gns was achieved for a Whitehaugh shearling from W McTaggart, Hawick selling to LA&M Lambert, Carnforth. Closely followed by Mr O Roberts, Ruthin selling a Hafod shearling at 600gns purchased by CR Price, Brecon. Other shearling rams regularly sold at 450-600gns with an overall market average of £530 achieved.
Females attracted keen interest from both new and exciting breeders, achieving a top price of three occasions of 400gns. First to achieve this price was Mr O Roberts, Ruthin selling a 2017 born ewe having run with the Royal Welsh breed champion, going on to be purchased by GE Edgar, Brampton. Shearlings from W McTaggart, Hawick also achieved 400gns on two occasions going on to find new homes with CR Price, Brecon and JT Armstrong, Ledbury. Ewes also sold to 380gns from Ms Duggan, Llangadog. All females today averaged £372. North West Auctions would like the Charmoise Hill Sheep Society for their kind instruction to host this sale and look forward to the forth coming sale of in lamb sheep on Saturday 28th January.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 17th October 2022.
Prime Lambs
Lancasters Monday sale of prime lambs had an entry of 825 lambs forward, selling to a sharper trade especially for handy weighted lambs. Although the market average reads 223p/kg, the entry did include 303 Mule and Horned lambs with upland lambs being well bid for. Heavy weight lambs once again took top spot peaking at 142p/kg for Texels from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping followed by Dutch Spotted x lambs to £141 from Vanda Whitton, Burneside. This was followed by a run of heavy weight Texel lambs from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock selling to £141, £140 and £134. Plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs sold in the one twenties. Upland lambs saw heavy weight Mules to £120 from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough and £118 from JR&LA Capstick, Kirkby Lonsdale followed by £116.50 and £115.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Mashams sold to £119.50 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East followed by £117 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale.
Handy weighted lambs were a shapier trade with the best quality selling in excess of 300p/kg. Leading the way today at 315p/kg was 40kg Texels from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof selling to £126, this was followed by 308p/kg for a shapey Beltex lamb from Kevin Purtill, Wigan selling to £123. More Horned lambs on the market today saw 53kg Dalesbreds to £115 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale East with Lonks peaking at £100 from S Bosworth, Burnley.

Texel x ewes sold to £116 and £115 from Myerscough College. Mule ewes peaked at £102 from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham with plenty of others in the

late nineties. Upland sheep saw dalesbred tups sell to £94 from D&J Hay, Cockerham. Cheviot ewes sold to £89 and £84 from P&M Asbury, Abbeystead. Horned sheep saw Swaledale ewes sell to £72 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with other Swaledale ewes to £70 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. Lonk ewes sold to £70 from S Bosworth, Burnley.

Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs had an entry of just shy of 1200 forward, selling to an overall market average of 222p/kg. The trade today saw well fleshed lambs of all sizes in the strongest demand, those lambs lacking finish getting financially penalised. A slight change in market trends saw handy weighted export quality lambs selling to a sharper trade and in more demand from our ring of buyers. Heavy weight lambs still add up best but as more are now available in the country trade not just as fast as it was. The consignment of heavy weight lambs from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston peaked at £144 & £133 for Suffolks and £138 for Texels who sold heavy weight mules for £133. Other leading prices saw Suffoks to £136 from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Other leading prices from Texels was £134 from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh. Followed by £133 & £130 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Other Texels selling in excess of the £130 mark was AW Crowe, Witherslack £132.50. Mules peaked at £136 from HR&KR Hodgson, Barbon. More quality finished lambs each week.

All cast sheep sold to a sharper trade today, with Texel ewes selling to £132 from RJ Stott, Stainton with other Texel ewes selling to £128 from RH & M Boyren, Colton. The best Texel ewes selling from £115-125. Mule ewes were the sharpest trade of the day selling to a top of £124 from M&M Carr, Clawthorpe, with a pen of 14 selling to £111 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill. The best end regularly getting over the £110 mark with the next level down £90-£95. A leaner show of hill ewes were forward with a pen of cheviots selling to £74 from GG&MA Long, Ulverston. With Swaledales selling to £55 from JM&NJ Strickland, Winfell. Meated Swaledales ewes regularly selling from £45-50.

The Ambleside fair show and sale of 4500 store lambs was met with new faces as well as our loyal ring side of buyers which ensured all store lambs sold to a shaper trade than in previous sales. We would like to take this time to thank our pre sale judge Mr J Longworth, Kentmere. John awarded his prices as follows:

Leading the way today was the consignment of Beltex lambs from CM Jennings, Selside selling to £124 with others from the same good home selling to £98. A full pen of Texel lambs from JC Dunning, Orton sold to £96. Many of the best Beltex and Texel lambs getting into the nineties. Trade remained buoyant throughout the sale for short keep lambs with these types selling in to the mid to late eighties. Mule lambs would see the biggest lift from previous sales with a top of £94 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans with other Mule lambs selling to £93.50 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Plenty of pens of strong Mule wether lambs easily sold into the mid-eighties with medium type lambs selling to the high seventies. A big show of hill bred lambs were forward which saw these well bid for. Cheviots sold to a top of £73 from DH Holme, Kirkby Stephen with a full pen of 48 from MB Meredith, Coniston selling to £71.50. Rough Fells sold to £71 from DH Holme, Kirkby Stephen with others selling to £70 from L Potter, Orton. An increased number of Swaledale wethers on the market today with the best regularly over the fifty-pound mark topping at £54.50 from RA Walton, Torver.

Dairy Cattle
The popular fortnightly sale of dairy saw a top price of £2500 achieved for a pedigree heifer from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold others at £2350 and £2120. A pedigree heifer from B&V Swan, Chorley achieved £1950. All new calved heifers averaged £2230. A consignment of bulling heifers from GM Strong, Penrith sold to £880 twice with others at £820.
A large crowd of buyers present looking for all classes and types of dairy cattle with more required to satisfy demand.

Other bull calves regularly sold at £230 to £290 with younger sorts £180 to £220. Dairy bulls sold to £130 for young Montbeliarde from Stanworth Agricultural, Chipping.
Several weaned bull calves forward sold to £435 for British Blue x from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby with other British Blue x to £380 from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe who also sold an Aberdeen Angus at £355 with Herefords to £350 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Weaned dairy bulls sold to £250 for a Holstein Friesians from Stoney Lane Farm, Nateby.

An entry of predominantly younger Heifer calves sold to £250 for a British Blue x from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore with other British Blues achieving £245 from DJ Clarke Farming Ltd, Barnacre and £240 from Barber Farms, Garstang. Younger heifer calves generally £160 to £200 with the smallest sorts less.
Several weaned heifer calves sold to £390 for a British Blue x from JG Thornley, Kirkham who sold others at £360 and Aberdeen Angus x at £300. Hereford x heifers also achieved £300 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel.
A small entry of stirks saw Aberdeen Angus x steers sell to £410 from JG Thornley Ltd, Kirkham.

Store Cattle
The popular weekly sale of store cattle saw a fast and competitive trade for all classes and types which saw a top price of £1660 for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus x steers from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Closely followed by British Blue x from JG&GM Bracken, Catterall achieving £1620 with a Charolais x from DE&SM Moorehouse, Natland selling at £1510. The £1500 barrier was also broken by L Parson & Sons, Levens selling Aberdeen Angus’s and Limousins at £1500. Heavy well fleshed steers regularly sold at £1350 to £1480, with others suitable for finishing at £1250 to £1350. Dairy steers sold to £1270 for a Fleckvieh from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with MRI steers to £1130 from Barlow Bros, Croston. All steers forward today averaged £1265. Heifers sold to a top price of £1430, again for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus, this time from RG&B Lewis, Middleton. British Blues sold to £1400 from JG&GM Bracken, Catterall as did Aberdeen Angus’s from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. This was closely followed by British Blues achieving £1380 from J&JA Burrow, Grayrigg. Herefords sold to £1270 from JW Atkinson, Bentham with Shorthorns achieving £1200 from EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine. All heifers averaged £1208.

107 cull cows achieved an overall market averaged of 169p/kg with other half the entry being dairy cows. Well fleshed beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill & Son, Ingleton with Limousin x to 224.5p/kg from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal. Other heavy well fleshed beef cows regularly sold between 185 and 205p/kg with those suitable for finishing 165 and 190p/kg, depending of quality and type. Dairy cows sold to 209.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore with this price also achieved by A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel selling a Montbeliarde. Holstein Friesians sold to 197.5p/kg from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold at 170 to 190p/kg with medium sorts 150 to 170p/kg and parlour types 115 to 140p/kg, depending on quality and type.
Top grossing cow was a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill, Ingleton achieving £1766. This was closely followed by a Holstein Friesians from RT Halhead, Cockerham grossing £1718.
OTM heifers sold to 214p/kg for a Fleckvieh from F&E Harrison, Wray with a Holstein Friesians from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham achieving £1431.
Steers sold to a top of 214p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton with British Blue x selling to £1378 from PG Thornton, Scorton.
Several cull bulls forward sold to 199.5p/kg for a Hereford from R Escolme, Bay Horse with a top price of £1965 achieved for a Charolais from CI Briggs, Ambleside.
