A slightly lighter show of lambs forward this week, which were met by a strong trade. Lambs saw a peak of £152 for Texels from J Singleton, Great Eccleston with Beltexs selling to £146 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. Many pens of heavier lambs sold at £138 to £145 per head. Prime Lambs

Prime Lamb numbers continue rise at J36 with just over 900 selling to 13 active ringside buyers, with an overall marker average of 297p/kg for lambs ranging from 31kg-57kg. Trade bouncing back from the fall seen from late last week with well finished continental lambs regularly 305-325p/kg peaking at 330p/kg for a pen of Texel x from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, with others at 327p/kg from E Dodgson, Kendal. Peaking today’s trade was 50kg Texel lambs selling to £169 from TA Teasdale, Cartmel. With a pen of well-bred lambs from E Dodgson, Kendal selling to £167, with Beltex lambs seeing a peak of £165 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. All sale long, heavy lambs selling between the £145-£155 mark easily. Lighter weight well finished lambs attracting keen interest selling to £109 for 34kg from A Taylor & Son, Eyemouth who sold other at £103 with a ring full of 33kg Texel x from Hornby Hall Farms, Penrith selling at £97. Seasonal entry of Prime Hoggs saw 218 forward, selling to an overall average of 214p/kg with well finished standard weight hoggs selling to a premium regularly achieving 270-300p/kg. Topping at 304p/kg for Continental x from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Well fleshed heavy weight hoggs sold to £158 from JA Airey, New Hutton with others regularly £135-£148. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £126 for heavy weight Swaledales from TA & J Dioxn, Selside with Herdwicks to £112 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston and Rough Fells also achieving £112 from A Guy, Langdale.

Other heavy weight pure ewes generally achieving £140-£160. Mule ewes sold to a top price of £115 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with others at the same price from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth. Other heavy mules regularly £105-£112. Hill bred ewes sold to £110 for cheviots from CP Bateman, Docker with Swaledales to £109 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead. Buyers showing caution to over fat ewes with medium ewes attracting keenest interest often only a few bids behind the over fat ewes. Overall market average of £78 was achieved, reflecting a high proportion of lean hill bred ewes coming forward. Cull rams sold to £199 for a Texel from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. A larger proportion of leaner medium rams forward sold to £117 for Blueface Leicester from TA & J Dixon, Selside with Charollais to £116 from Messrs Gibson, Endmoor. Shorn ewes attracting more interest compared to those in the wool.

Calves & Stirks

The calf trade continued to fly at Junction 36. A run of Limousin calves from Langley Park Farms, Millom saw six bull calves from this good home all selling at £480, with British Blue bulls selling to the same price from JW&TE Sharpe, Lyth. The best Continental bred bull calves sold regularly at £400 plus. Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to a top of £420 from N Howard, Darlington.

Heifer calves sold to a top of £450 for Limousins from Langley Park, Millom with British Blues selling to £445 from JW&TE Sharpe, Lyth. A four week old British Blue heifer from A Pickthall & Son, New Hutton sold to £350. Dairy bred bulls continue to sell to a nice trade with the best selling to £220 from Langley Farms, Penrith. Rearing Black and Whites were either side of the £100 mark. 65 stirks were forward with all selling to their full value. A pair of Limousin bullocks from JH Atkinson, Selside achieved £975. Other Limousin bullocks sold to £800 from A Taylor & Sons, Berwick upon Tweed. The heifer trade saw dairy bred Aberdeen Angus’s sell to £690 from D Jordan, Bishop Auckland. An increased entry of young bulls were forward, selling to a sharp trade. topping at £770 for a Limousin from FW Park, Windermere.

Store Cattle

There was no let up in the store cattle trade today, with a full ringside of buyers bidding eagerly through out the sale. British Blue heifers saw a top of £1460 from MJ Waller, Lupton with yearling Charolais heifers from HR&K Hodgson, Barbon selling to £1390. The best end heifers were regularly selling at £1300 plus. Grazing heifers were regularly selling at £950 to £1000.

Bullocks peaked at £1400 for a pen of three Herefords from MJ Waller, Lupton. Yearling Limousin steers sold to £1350 twice, first for a Limousin from JA&KJ Allen, Ings and then from J Miller, Claughton on Brock. Plenty of suckler bred yearling steers sold at £1100 to £1200. More bulls forward today which sold to a sharp trade. Aberdeen Angus’s sold at £1300 from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh. Eight month old Limousins sold to £1100 from A Airey, Old Hutton. More Friesian bullocks were forward with sixteen month old Friesian bullocks selling to £950 from J Twigge, Lindale and a pen of seven twelve month old bullocks selling to £820 from ME&PC Capstick, Milnthorpe.

OTM Cattle

A mixed entry of 70 cull cows saw an overall market average of 180p/kg and £1109 achieved, with a large proportion of leaner dairy cows direct out of the parlour.

Beef cows led the sale topping at 229.5p/kg for a Bazadaise x from NP&CE Buckley, Staveley with others at 224.5p/kg for a Simmental x from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook, 219.5p/kg from M Allen, Carnforth and JW&M

Taylor & Son, Dent. Feeding type beef cows were generally 195p/kg to 210p/kg, depending on quality and type.

Top grossing beef cow was an Aberdeen Angus x from M Allen, Carnforth totalling £1909 with £1833 achieved twice for a Bazadaise x from NP&CE Buckley, Staveley and Charolais from M Allen. Other heavier and well fleshed beef cows were regularly £1400 to £1600, with feeders £1200 to £1400.

Dairy cows sold to 190.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from T Atkinson, Ulverston with others medium cows generally 175p/kg to 188p/kg. Leaner cows were 150p/kg to 170p/kg, with the very leanest and light weights at realisation.

Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstien Friesian from JR Robinson, Carnforth totalling £1354.

Another busy Friday sale at NWA Lancaster with 315 cattle sold in just over two hours through three sale rings. Store cattle to £1670, OTM to 269.5p/kg and £1802, Calves to £450.

Calves & Weanlings

A smaller entry of 71 rearing and weaned calves saw a large crowd of farmer buyers, keen to secure replacement stock. Weaned calves sold to £450 for a British Blue x bull from RT Halhead, Cockerham with Hereford x selling to £410 and £400 from TE&M KLidd, Ellel. Aberdeen Angus x sold to £390 from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Rearing bull calves sold to £365 for a British Blue x from Lawson Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Younger Continental bull calves were £260 to £300. A large number of native sired bull calves forward, sold to £350 on three occasions, with others at £340, £335 and £300 from Tom Barron Farms, Ltd Cockerham. Younger native sired bulls sold between £220 and £280. Weaned heifer calves sold to £350 for a Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with British Blue x at £340 from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Rearing heifer calves sold to £310 on two occasions from EE Thornton & Sons, Thornton with Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham selling British Blue x to £300 with others at £290 and £280. Despite the report of downward pressure on the beef price, buyers were ring side keen to secure replacement stock to keep sheds full. The sale peaked at £1670 for a trio of Aberdeen Angus x steers from J&H Davis, Cabus.

Dairy steers sold to £1290 for British Friesians from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton with others at £1270 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. All steers forward averaged £1345.

Heifers sold to a top of £1490 for a pair of Simmental x from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. Closely followed by British Blue x from GT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe at £1470 and Aberdeen Angus x also achieving £1470 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Other stronger heifers were regularly £1300 to £1400. Yearling pure Limousin heifers from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal sold to £1220. All heifers forward today averaged £1171.

The sale commenced with cull cows which saw a top price of 234.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus X from GR Bargh & Co, Caton with others at 229.5p/kg for a Limousin x from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine and 224.5p/kg from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton. Other medium beef cows were generally 195p/kg to 215p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton totalling £1733, with A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine achieving £1562. A much leaner show of dairy cows saw a top price of 201.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet with others at 197.5p/kg from TA&RM Dawson, Quernmore, 194.5p/kg from WE&G Hewitt & Sons, Cockerham and GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. A much plainer show of day cows saw those direct ex parlour selling at 165p/kg to 180p/kg, with the very leanest and lightest at realisation. Top grossing dairy cow as a Holstein Friesian from WE&G Hewitt & Sons, Cockerham achieving £1569 who also sold others at £1599 and £1511.

Heifers sold to 259.5p/kg for a British Blue x from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with others at 239.5p/kg for a Limousin from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside and 237.5p/kg for a Hereford x from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Dairy heifers sold to 251.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green who sold others at 239.5p/kg. Holstein Friesian achieving 229.5p/kg from J&G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Beef heifers sold to £1655 for a British Blue x from MJ Shepherd & Son, Pilling with diary heifer selling to £1651 for a Holstein Friesian from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Steers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1802 for a British Blue x from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus x selling to 247.5p/kg and £1710 from WS Burrow Ltd, Silverdale. Other steers were generally 220p/kg to 230p/kg. All culls today averaged 185.5p/kg and £1138.
