J36 Rural Auction Centre: Pedigree Sheep Day and Second Sale of Breeding Ewes and Gimmer Shearlings, Saturday 17th September 2022.
North West Auctions held its Autumn sheep fair comprising of pedigree Beltexs, Badger Face Texels, Blue Texels and Dutch Spotted, with the sale attracting attention from fair and wide.


Beltex
The sale commenced with the Beltexs on behalf of the Northern Beltex club, which saw the pre-sale show kindly sponsored by JG Animal Health. A special thank you goes to our judge Philip Mason. The championship rosette was awarded to Wannops Genious sired by Aviemore Festival ET with a tup shearling. This powerful much-admired tup went on to sell for 1500gns. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to Sovereign Goldielocks, a stylish gimmer shearling consigned by R Braithwaite and sired by Artnagullion Exodus, which went on to sell to the top price of the day of 1900gns and was purchased by the judge Philip Mason.
Leading prices today saw the consignment from Wannop Farm’s sell Wannops Giant a son of Brothertoft Fynley sell to 1300gns and Wannops Geldoff sired by Belvoir View Chaos sell to 1200gns. Also, archiving 1200gns was Ainstable Grit sired by Kinglesdores Engleburt ET consigned by B Hall of the Ainstable flock. The next call was 1100gns from M&J Jennings of the Hallcrake flock selling Hallcrake Group Captain sired by Frongoy Enrique. Finishing off a good day for the Wannop Family was Wannops Gladys sired by Aviemore Festival ET, this muchadmired gimmer shearling went on to sell for 1000gns.
Badger Face Texel
A small handful of Badger Face Texels forward saw quality sheep in big demand, as the sale peaked at 2100gns for the champion from Hannah Pedley with High Ploughlands Confetti that was sired by Cleenagh Apollo. This stylish gimmer shearling caught the eye of the judge Mr Stuart Currie, who we thank for his time and expertise. This gimmer shearling created much interest ring side, selling to Ian Bunting, Castle Douglas. Ram lambs sold to a top of 800gns for Baileys Dominator consigned by Andrew Bailey and sired by the flocks main stock tup, which had successfully been shown this summer. This tup lamb was purchased by Hannah Pedley of the High Ploughlands flock.
Dutch Spotted
The Dutch Spotted show and sale held on behalf of the Dutch Spotted Society saw well bred sheep consistently archiving strong prices. We would like to thank our judge Elliot Ford for their time and expertise. The championship rosette was awarded to

the champion ewe lambs C View Faith from O Watson, Millom. Leading the way in the Dutch Spotted section was Lochlad Besotted which fly away to 2500gns. A keen interest was shown in the gimmer lambs from D Steen with his consignment topping at 1400gns for Coxhill Flamingo. The tup trade saw a two tier trade with the best end regularly selling over 500gns, topping at 600gns from D Steen with Coxhill Flotilla.
Blue Texel
The Blue Texel shows and sale held on behalf of the Blue Texel sheep society saw quality sheep in plenty of demand and eagerly bid for. Thanks goes to the pre-sale judge Mr Stuart Currie who awarded his championship rosette to the first prize ram lamb from James Field with Claremont Gino which was sired by Matt’s Escobar, which went on to sell for 700gns. Blue Texels peaked at 1000gns from J&A Gargett with Rookie Blue Fin sired by Stonycroft Excalibur.
Commercial Breeding Sheep

The second sale of breeding sheep saw a wide variety of on offer and all selling to a competitive trade. The sale commenced with breeding ewes which saw a top price of £210 achieved for ¾ bred Texel one crop ewes from E&H Winder, Ravenstonedale who sold others at £205. The dispersal of stock sheep on behalf of SP Pease, Kirkby Lonsdale saw one crop Cheviot x Mules sell to £165 with others at £150. £150 was also achieved for one crop Texel cross ewes and 3-4 crop Cheviot Mules selling to £130. Mule ewes sold to £160 for one crops from M&YS Barker, Halton with others to £148 for one crops from J&T Hunter, Dent. Older Mule ewes sold to £122 for four crops from M Moorehouse, Grange Over Sands with others at £122 from G Hill, Pilling. Gimmer shearlings again saw the strongest fully vaccinated shearlings selling to the highest level of interest, peaking at £185 for North Country Mules from TH Gibson & Son, Staveley with others at £180 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Commercial pure Texel Shearlings from PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow sold to £250 with others at £230 from K Cochran, Darwen and £200 from WJ Standen, Lancaster. ¾ Beltex shearlings sold to £190 from K Cochran, Darwen who sold others at £175. First x Texels sold to £175 from DJ&S Dixon, Kirkby Stephen who sold others at £172.
A pure Texel gimmer shearling was kindly donated by PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow with all proceeds kindly donated to Crook Young Farmers, who are rising money for Blood Cancer. After generous bidding from the ring side of buyers this sheep was sold for a final bid of £430 by Rob, Yvonne and Freddie Willison.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 20th September 2022.
Prime Lambs
North West Auctions Junction 36 had an increased entry of 1556 prime lambs forward today, selling to an overall market average of 230p/kg. Once again best confirmation lambs sold in the region of 300p/kg with well fleshed heavy weight lambs continuing to be in the strongest demand. Buyers continue to look for well finished lambs with leaner types penalised.
Once again heavy weight lambs in big demand at J36 with 69kg Suffolks to £160 from RI Dixon, Low Newton and 63kg Texels to £156 from IL Dixon, Cantsfield. Other leading prices for heavy weight lambs saw Dorsets to £149 from S Proctor, Selside, Texels to £144 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor, Texels to £144 from DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. This was followed by 49kg Texels to £141 from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston and £141 for 50kg Texels from JA Airey, New Hutton. Plenty of heavy weight lambs sold in the region of the £130 mark.
Best confirmation lambs were in more demand today selling in the region of 300p/kg, peaking at 305p/kg for Texels from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor followed by a pen of fifteen Beltex lambs to 300p/kg from P Stringfellow, Chorley.
More hill bred lambs forward today saw Mules peak at £117 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston followed by 51kg Mules to £114 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. 45kg Swaledale lambs sold to £92 from RF&CE Hodgson, Ulverston.

The sale of 670 cull ewes saw well meated sheep sell to a sharper trade than in previous weeks. Texel ewes sold to a top of £159 for R Stott, Crosscrake with the best end selling over the £140 mark. Mule ewes sold to £132 from C&J Bennett, St Michaels with a full pen selling to £122 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington. Cheviots sold to a top of £107 from J&M Wilson, Selside. More Swaledales on the market with the best selling to £94 from JA&CA Gibson, Selside. Fit medium type Swaledale ewes regularly sold at the £50-£60 mark. Rough Fell ewes sold to £109 from AEA Harrison, Kentmere. More tups on offer with trade going up a gear or two, Texel sold to £196 from JA&ME Lawson, Orton with other Texels selling to £158 from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Thursday 22nd September 2022.
Store Lambs
North West Auctions had an increased number of store lambs forward with 4,689 forward. A larger proportion of upland bred lambs and smaller long-term lambs with less strong short keep lambs in the market. The trade saw strong short term lambs trade continue be in strong demand and regularly selling in excess of the eighty-pound mark. Smaller long term lambers a stickier trade with a continued shortage of grass in the south and many local dairy farmers taking advantage of the good weather and continued grass growth and taking an extra cut of silage where possible with plenty of buyers looking to buy lambs in the near future and wanting them soon.
Meated short keep lambs sold to a top of £98 from S Proctor, Selside followed by a pen of strong Texel lambs from B & D Willison, Levens selling to £97. Plenty of pens of strong lambs selling in excess of the ninety-pound mark. Strong good quality beltex lambs saw plenty of bidder’s ring side selling to £95 from TM Potter, Orton followed by £94 from RA Batty, Selside with plenty others selling in the region of the ninety-pound mark. Continental and Suffolk Lambs with strength and growth that would easily be finished in the upcoming months sold in excess of the eighty-pound mark.
The larger number of upland bred lambs saw the big lambs regularly selling in excess of the eighty pound mark with longer keep ones seeing the trade being affected with the shortage of grass in the south and local dairy farmers now looking for them lambs that finish in the new year yet. Mules sold to a top of £90.50 from TLB & J Knowles, Selside with other pens to £85 from RI Dixon, Low Newton whom sold cheviot mules to £89. Horned lambs saw a pen of powerful well fleshed lambs sell to £91 for thirteen from A O’Neil, Firbank.

Dairy Cattle
The fortnightly sale of dairy cattle included a special show and sale judged by Mr S Forshaw, Longridge. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our show sponsors Wadland Finance, Yan Farm Health and NWF Agriculture. The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer Pennine Poppy 1640 consigned by Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale which later sold to £2600 to the judge. The reserve champion was awarded to Pennine Peace 896 which later sold for £2620 to W Oldfield, Gisburn. First prize cow was awarded to WH Gardner & Son, Lytham who are dispersing their herd, this fresh 3rd calved cow achieved £2280 and was purchased by AW Park, Ellel. Top price heifer today was a much-admired Tunstall Apple Free Cazz Red shown by JH Towers & Son, Tunstall which achieved a final bid of £2820. An Ayrshire heifer from J Stott & Co, Cartmel achieved £1420, with a large crowd of buyers from throughout the Northern counties keen to secure all classes and types. Other noted prices today included a non-registered heifer from WH Gardner & Son, Lytham achieving £2380 with others from this ongoing dispersal at £2220 and £2150. A 5th calved cow from France Bros, Littledale achieved £1550 with. In calf heifers from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall sold to £1800 with others at £1580.

A more weathered show of store cattle today, with the strongest maintaining the high prices of recent sales. Simmental x steers led the way achieving £1620 for a pair from TJ Llyod, Settle with Hereford x achieving £1560 from the same home. Limousins sold to £1370 from A&J Knowles, Clitheroe who also sold British Blues at £1340. Beef Shorthorn heifers sold to £1280 from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with Hereford x to £1230 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse. All heifers today averaged £1084.

A much larger entry of 154 cull cows forward today, all cows forward averaged 155p/kg with 80% of the sale being dairy cows.
Heavy well fleshed beef cows continue to sell to a premium with Stabilisers to 229.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside, Limousin x to 221.5p/kg from JG&PH Thompson, Selside, Charollais x 219.5p/kg from P Metcalfe, Denny Beck and Herefords to 214.5p/kg from C Pemberton, Kingsley. Well fleshed beef cows were regularly 180200p/kg with keen interest in cows suitable for finishing.
Dairy cows sold to 194.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from S Forshaw & Sons, Longridge with others at 191.5p/kg from D&A Blacoe, Lytham and Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. Heavy well flesh dairy cows were generally 170-190p/kg, mediums 140-160p/kg with the leanest and parlour types 95-115p/kg depending on quality.
Top grossing cow today was a Charolais from P Metcalfe, Denny Beck achieving £2087 with Limousin to £1780 from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine and a Hereford to £1615 from GJT&V Parkinson, Preesall. Dairy cows sold to £1678 for a Holstein Friesians from S Forshaw & Sons who sold others at £1556 followed by £1553 achieved for a Holstein Friesians from JRG Mason, Bentham.
OTM heifers sold to 244.5p/kg from a Simmental from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton with Hereford to 219.5p/kg from GJT&V Parkinson, Preesall with Friesians peaking at 209.5p/kg from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet and Holstein Friesians to 194.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. Top grossing OTM heifer was Hereford achieving £1525 from GJT&V Parkinson. Dairy heifers sold to £1303 from Wallbank Farms Ltd. All OTM heifers averaged 188p/kg. Steers sold to a top price of 227.5p/kg and £1754 for an Aberdeen Angus’s from B&J Preston, Caton with others from this same good run achieving 219.5p/kg or £1573 and £1478. All OTM steers today averaged 222p/kg.
Seven cull bulls forward today sold to 239.5p/kg for a Simmental from Barlow Bros, Croston with a Hereford from JRG Mason, Bentham achieving £1580. All cull bulls averaged 170p/kg.
