Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw a sharp risein numbers forward, withseveral new vendors in attendance, attractedto this prompt efficient Monday morningsale. An overall SQQ of 334p/kg was achieved, forhoggs rangingfrom 34kgto70kg. A larger numberof heavy weight hoggs (52kg plus) were presented today, selling to atop of £197for Texelcross from GHSanderson& Family, Catforth andSuffolk cross to £192 fromPilling Hall, Pilling. Other heavy weights were regularly £180 to £185. The best standardweight hoggs soldto£181 for Charollais cross fromAGButler, Hambleton with Beltex to £180from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, Texels to £175from KA Purtill, Wigan and £172 from J Twigge, Lindale. Wellfinished hoggs attracted thekeenest buyer interest. Lighter weights soldto £161for Beltex from KA Purtill, Wigan with others at £152 fromJ Bargh, Morecambe and £150 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Prime Hoggs

An easeintrade and aweatheredshow of hoggs, sees a drop intheweek at J36, Insayingthis thetrade remains strong on the whole. Well fed sheep takeless of a hit, withhandy weight hoggs alsocontinuingto be a very goodtrade. Howeverthe bottomend, out of specificationand light hoggs were abit back fromsevendays ago. Hoggs topped at £185 for asinglefrom KE Richards & Son, Howgill whilea pen of three from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet soldto £183. Themid 40kg toearly 50kg hoggs were thebest sheep tosell on the day. AG Butler, Hambletonsold a single47kghogg to370.5p/kg, slightly heavier sheep fromthesame homesoldto 350p/kg. 46kg Texels from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet hit 366.9p/kg. Goodmiddle of the road hoggs also sold away nicely with a penof three from Messrs Cornthwaite, Grange OverSands making 347p/kg. 41kg sheep were regularly 335p/kgto340p/kg, with both T&CM Kelsall, Chipping and MW&MRBlack, Staveley reaching £140 for theirs.

Demand stillremains strongfor alltypes of sheep, withnumbers sequinning to goscares.

The strongest first cross ewessoldto £180 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington with others £176 from H Pumphrey Armitage, Milnthorpe. Others were regularly £160 to £175, mediums £130to £155 and betterend leaner ewes £105 to £120. A bumper entry of 115 OTM wereforward today, with allclasses once again taking alift. Top pence perkilo was 264.5p/kgachieved threetimes, firstly for aLimousincross from N Cooper& Sons, Broughton in Furness, PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow also achievingthis price for aBritish Friesian, whilst other suckerbred cattlesold to thesame pricefrom J Twigge, Lindale. Wellfleshed suckers wereoften 240p/kg andabove. Thebest of the diary’s 215p/kg upwards, harder workedsorts were 195p/kgto 210p/kg.

Top grossing was a heavy weightCharolais from Thor Atkinson, Ulverston with this achieving£2247.27 (259.5p/kg), with Hereford to £2002.22 (239.5p/kg). Black andWhites soldto £1920.63 (219.5p/kg) from JE Read, Carnforth. A cast bullfrom TM&D Crosthwaite equated to£1988.97.

Stores carry momentum once again at Lancaster, with a ringsideof buyers all keenfor cattle. 40cattlebreaking the £2000 barrier today, witha top priceof £2500 being achieved onfour occasions. First at £2500 was a pen of threedairy bredBritishBluecross bullocks fromJ Lamb, Glasson with K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel sellingBritishBluecross tothe same price. This homealsoproduced a singleAberdeen Angus cross bullock to£2480 and a pair of Aberdeen Anguscross to £2420. Also at £2420 was aLimousin bullock from PM&ST Entwistle,Abbeystead who’s run saw others to £2380. Black and white bullocks saw apen of four from THWensley & Son, Kirkham reach £1620. Today’s bullock averaged a genuine £1824.50.
