Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Ewes, Monday 20th February 2023.

Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of 600 hoggs saw an overall market average of 226p/kg with a third of the entry being Mules and upland bred hoggs. Best bred Texel and Beltex hoggs were regularly selling at 280p/kg-290p/kg, topping at 298p/kg for Texels from AG Butler, Hambleton. Top price per head this morning also came from the same good home of £140. Suffolk hoggs sold to £134 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale with Beltex hoggs selling to £133 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Heavy hoggs would be a bid or two less this morning, which has been seen nationally but still regularly sold at the £125-£130 mark. Masham hoggs led the upland section today, selling to £119.50 from T&D Wright, Wray with other pens of Masham’s selling to £118 from A&MA Wright, Roeburndale. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £114 from JW Cornall & Sons, Bleasdale with heavy Mule hoggs regularly selling at the £105-£110 mark. Swaledale hoggs topped at £91.50 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. More hoggs are required to fulfil buyers requirements at the first sale of the week.

Cast Sheep

150 cast ewes and rams were forward with all selling to a sharp trade. Cheviot ewes sold to a top of £139 from S Rossall, Scorton with Texels selling to £134 from TR Gorst, Bay Horse. A run of milk sheep from WG Farms, Cockerham sold to £124 with the same home selling Mules to £117. Cast rams peaked with a Texels selling to £122 from CM&CA Jackson, Caton.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 21st February 2023.

Prime Hoggs

Weekly sale of prime hoggs at NWA J36 saw a wide range forward ranging from 32-70kg with buyers showing keenest interest in well finished hoggs with caution towards the leaner, under finished hoggs. The sale peaked at £151 for heavyweight Texel x hoggs from JB Airey, Kendal with other heavyweight texels £145, £136, £132. Heavyweight Suffolks to £127 from G Riley Bolton le Sands, with others at £125 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. Charollais hoggs sold to £123 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth. Heavyweight hoggs generally £118- £125 depending on breed and quality. Standard weight hoggs sold to £117 for Texel x hoggs from AR & BJ Thompson Selside, with others reaching £112 from AW Crowe, Witherslack and £109 from LF Horton & Son, Leigh. Lightweight lambs were a sharper trade today selling to £96 for Texel x from TM Potter, Orton with others to £95 from AR & BJ Thompson Selside and £94 from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere. Over half the sale today comprised of hill bred hoggs with heavyweight cheviots selling to £116 from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh who sold others to £112. Mules sold to £105 from F & C E Bentley & Son, Shap, with others at £103 from R Lawrence Grange over Sands. Rough Fells sold to £86 for heavy weights from PE Allen, Ings and W Moore Fradswell. Swaledales sold to £85 from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere. Well finished lightweight horned lambs sold to £79 from GJ&GM Ibbetson, Lancaster with Swaledales to £74 from Fishwick Bros, Longlseddle. Prime hoggs peaked at 265ppk for Texel x hoggs from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with others at 248ppk from AW Crowe, Witherslack and JA Airey, New Hutton, well finished hoggs regularly 225- 240ppk with lightweights 200-215ppk. All weights of prime hoggs are required to fulfil buyers requirements with hoggs benefiting from hard feed and achieving maximum returns for sellers.

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep trade continues to improve week on week with 8 buyers around the ring keen to purchase, ensuring J36 is the best place to sell your cast ewes and rams. Topping the trade today was regular vendor M&S Blease, Carnforth with Texel ewes to £178 and £154. Coming in second was G Riley, Bolton le Sands with a Suffolk selling to £140. Continental bred ewes were regularly selling £125-£135. Mules ewes once again saw the biggest lift in trade topping at £122 from A&B Fell, Silecroft with others selling to £120 from TMW & H Hodgson, Ulverston. All mules forward average £92. Cheviot ewes toped the hill section, topping at £118 from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside with Rough Fell selling to £82 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. Swaledale ewes topped at £76 from Holgate Caravan, Carnforth with a full pen of Swaledales selling to £71 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. All Swaledales averaged £55. Cast Rams sold to £122 from JW Bentham & Son, Dent. More ewes are required at J36 on regular basis to satisfy buyers requirements. Please contact Bradley Thompson on 07867000244.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of In Lamb Breeding Sheep followed by Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Thursday 23rd February 2023.

In Lamb Breeding Sheep

A run of In Lamb Leicester ewes from RI Dixon, Low Newton sold to a top price of £250 with others from the same good home selling to £200. EI EA & TW Wilson sold In Lamb Mule Hoggs sold to a top price of £122 with many pens selling to the £120 mark.

Please note there is 150 Mule and Texel In Lamb Hoggs from EI EA & TW Wilson for the next In Lamb Sale on Thursday 9th March.

In Lamb Hogg Top Prices: Mule: £122, £120, £110 Guides Farm.

Store Hoggs

1053 store hoggs put before a full ringside of buyers who were all keen to purchase hoggs resulting in all hoggs selling to fast rates in which many more could have been sold to vendors advantages. The overall average was £71. Texel hoggs lead the way selling to £106 from W Stamper, Chipping with a ring full of Texels selling to £92 from B Clark, Cartmel Fell with other texels achieving the same price from KP & EJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness. Suffolk hoggs sold to £90 from DM&D Cook, Ulverston with Charolais selling to the same price from JC Walling & Son, Lyth. Many pens of continental bred hoggs were easily selling to well over the £80 mark. Mule hoggs sold to £89.50 for a pen of twenty from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale with others selling to £89 from KD Harryman, Newlands. All mule hoggs averaged £74. Cheviot hoggs sold to a top of £83 from R Doran, Preston. A pen of 35 Scotch hoggs sold to £58 from Coward Brothers, Kirkby in Furness.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM's and Store Cattle. Fortnightly Sale of Dairy Cattle, Friday 24th February 2023.

Calves

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw less numbers about this week, after last weeks bumper entry with the majority being a month to six weeks old. The few older on offer today saw three month old Hereford bulls from TE&M Kidd, Ellel to £560 with others from the same good home £510. Wallbank Farm, Over Wyresdale had their usual run of quality calves, topping at £445 for a two month old British Blue bull. Also breaking the £400 barrier was WG Farms, Cockerham at £420 for three month old Charolais bulls. Aberdeen Angus bulls topped at £400 from RE&PM Miller, Barnacre with other British Blue bulls from JP&C Robson, Catterall at £380. WG Farms continued their good day with Charolais heifers at £300. JP&C Robson, Catterall sold one month old British Blue heifers at £250 with other month old British Blue heifers at £235 twice from RT Halhead, Cockerham. A handful of dairy bred calves in today, all about a month old, topping at £82 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Just one stirk in today from H&SD Cornthwaite, Nateby which sold at £300 for a Holstein Friesian bull at five months old.

Next weeks sale includes the monthly stirk sale with stirks, which will go through the main ring immediately following store cattle.

Bull Stirk Top Prices: Hereford: £560, £510 Booth Hall. Friesian: £300 Kirkwood Lodge Farm.

Dairy Cattle

Today’s Dairy sale was in the hands of guest auctioneer Bradley Thompson, who had a wonderful group of Dairy Cattle forward to sell.

B&V Swann was first in the ring with 2 Pedigree New Calved Heifers; Carwood Sassafras Honeybee 136 giving 32lts and Carwood Sassafras Fuchsia 72 giving 30lts both selling to todays top price of £2200 both going to the same home. Also at £2200 was Drinkall Bros with Pennie Poppy 903 giving 31lts selling to a returning customer. Closely followed by MJ&H Atkinson with Wyredale Pursuit Bettina 155 giving 27lts selling to £2100 joining a local herd. R&K Jenkinson had their usual consignment of heifers and cows forward, with a freshly calved 6th calver giving 39lts selling to £1750 and a newly calved heifer giving 29lts selling to £1850 both going to the same home. More Dairy Cattle could have been sold today, with buyers leaving with empty trailers. Next Dairy sale is on Friday 10th March at 11am. Entries to the office by Monday 6th March.

Store Cattle

The weekly store cattle sale at Lancaster saw a similar number forward to last week with more meat on offer today and the trade exceeding vendors expectations yet again. Steers averaged a cosmic £1370 and heifers an eye watering £1296.

The headlines this week goes to L Parson & Sons, Levens with a single twenty one month old, yes you read that right! A twenty one month old Limousin steer achieved £1900. This good home also had a trio of Aberdeen Angus steers at £1880. Other Aberdeen Angus steers from T&E Garlick & Sons, Freckleton sold at £1800, this home also sold Limousin steers at £1680. Charolais steers saw twenty three month olds at £1730 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Adam Stafford, Out Rawcliffe saw his consignment of cattle to £1640 for Hereford steers. Other cattle flying the flag for the Fylde coast saw KH Holden & Son, Pilling with British Blue steers at £1630. Weekly store cattle supporters AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton saw his trailer load of cattle peak at £1580 also for British Blue steers.

Dairy bred steers saw A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with a single Friesian at £1720 with R&E Ladds, Kendal not far behind at £1680. Regular consigners EE Thornton & Son, Heaton sold a pair at £1320.

J&JM Walmsley, Pilling sold a trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1600, with J Oddie & Son, Balderstone not far behind selling a pen of three at £1570. JA&SM Allen, Windermere took the trip south down the M6, with his consignment topping at £1510 for a pen of four British Blues. Also showing British Blue cattle this week was JB Moore, Grange Over Sands not far behind at £1500, this good home also had Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1470 with TD&V Whittaker making the same price for a pen of four.

More cattle are required next week to satisfy our ringside of buyers, eager to buy replacement cattle to keep their sheds full, as the current beef trade hits new highs.

OTM Cattle

Lancaster is certainly the place to sell your OTM cattle with customers returning who had previous sold cattle direct, the “sell live and thrive” motto certainly is proving correct with just short of 100 going through the bottom ring with trade hitting extreme rates. Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man stole the headlines this week with their consignment of beef bred OTM cattle, selling Charolais cows at 254.5p/kg or £2074.18 with other Charolais cows at 249.5p/kg or £2018.46. Other beef bred cows sold at 249.5p/kg for Limousins from PJ Holt & Sons, Thornton. Dairy bred OTM cows today saw an average of 177p/kg or £1180 per head, with the majority being straight out of the parlour cattle. Top of the tree in this section today was WG Farms, Cockerham with a young Friesian cow at

234.5p/kg or £1682 with others at £1662 from MG & J Parker, Wennington. Also breaking the £1600 barrier at £1620. Many more Friesian bred OTM cows broke the £1500 barrier with too many to mention.

OTM heifers saw Aberdeen Angus’s from WA Cardwell, Stalmine at 239.5p/kg or £1621 with Herefords at 254p/kg or £1445.56 from Mason, Birkland Barrow. Friesian heifers from R Gibson & Son, Kendal at 221p/kg or £1196.10.

Just one cast steer in today from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling at 249.5p/kg or £1803.89 for an Aberdeen Angus. A handful of bulls in today topping at 289.5p/kg or £1959.92 per head for a British Blue at twenty one months old, with other young bulls at 259.5p/kg or £1868 for an Aberdeen Angus with OTM bulls to £1515 from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man for a Simmental.
