Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Monday 20th March 2023.
Prime Hoggs
Trade and number are on the up at Lancaster Auction Mart with 1115 hoggs forward, averaging an SQQ of 258p/kg with an overall market average of 248p/kg. The sale topped at £158 for a superb Beltex hogg from AG Butler, Hambleton with other Beltex hoggs selling to £148 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore.

More interest was shown in heavy weight hoggs, with Suffolks selling to £151 from J France, Pilling and heavy Texels selling to £146 from V&EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby. Plenty of hoggs broke the 300p/kg barrier today, topping at 330p/kg for Texels from A Brown, Littledale with other Texel hoggs selling to 326p/kg from S Ayrton, Thurnham. Heavy Mule hoggs saw a top of £128 from A Brown, Littledale with the best Mule hoggs selling around the £120 mark. A run of well fed Scotch Black Face hoggs from M&YS Barker, Halton saw 44kg sell to £119. 39kg Cheviot hoggs from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside sold at £118 with J Bargh & Son, Heaton selling Cheviot £117.50. Dalesbred hoggs saw a top of £116 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale. Swaledales topped at £113 from JA Simpson, Barnacre. Meated Swaledales regularly selling at the 240p/kg-245p/kg. Lancaster can cater for all types of hoggs, with a ring side of buyers all keen to fulfil their Monday morning orders. Sheep with Lambs at Foot
50 ewes with lambs were forward with the busiest ring side of buyers seen this season, aged Texel ewes with Texel twin lambs from J&A Heap & Son, Barnacre topped twice at £290. The first offerings of shearlings to date were
from WG Farms, Cockerham which saw Suffolks with Texels twins selling to £270. Aged Mule ewes with Texel lambs from B&J Preston, Caton saw their best sell to £238. J&A Heap & Son sold aged Texel ewes with single lambs to £230, with others from the same good home selling to £212.

Mule ewes sold to a top of £130 twice from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne and J Burr, Quernmore. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £91 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. All ewes forward averaged £96.

Sheep With Lambs At Foot
Ewes with lambs in general were slightly a better trade on the week, even with the bad weather. A full ring side of buyers were forward to satisfy all vendors. Winsbury Farm, Leyburn sold an outstanding run with Grade 4 Dutch Spotted ewes with twin Dutch Spotted lambs to £550. Beltex ewes with twin Beltex lambs from the same home sold to £400. First cross Texel ewes with Texel twin lambs from J&R Waller sold to £305. The better end of Continental ewes sold at £280-£295 and the smaller end £240-£250. Strong single Mule ewes with Texel twins sold to £245 from J&R Waller, Killington. Mules were regularly selling between £220 and £230 with singles selling at the £150-£160 mark. A run of broken mouth Cheviot ewes with pure Cheviot lambs sold to £135 for singles from R Airey & Son, Ravestonedale.

Prime Hoggs
A bigger show of prime hoggs on the week with a lot more life in the job, with the whole sale averaging an SQQ of £2.65 per kilo. Commercial export types were a fast trade with plenty of pens selling around £2.70-£2.80 per kilo. Heavy hoggs got into another gear this week, some being £15 up on the week. 50kg Texel hoggs from SH&LE Birkett, Carnforth sold to £147 with other to £145 from Cornthwaite Moor, Hambleton. Mule hoggs sold well between the £115 and £118 mark, topping at £120 for 45kg hoggs from AW&AM Clarke, Troutbeck. Cheviot sold to £130 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston who sold other pens to £126. All horned hoggs were well bid for, Scotch Black Face sold to £120 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Other full pens of Scotch Black Face hoggs from M&YS Barker, Halton sold to £118.50. Topping of a good day for GM&A Jackson they topped the Swaledale section at £114. Hoggs from J Benson, Ambleside sold to £107.50 for 39kg.

Continental bred ewes with strength and meat were regularly selling at the £130-£140 mark. Mules sold to a top of £144 from E&A Thompson, New Hutton with Cheviot Mules selling to £140 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Rough Fells sold to a top of £111 from JA Law, Carnforth. A leaner show of Swaledale ewes were forward with the best selling to £78 from FW Garside, Ambleside. Twenty five cast rams were forward, Texels sold to £158 from MW&MR Black, Staveley with the best Texel tup regularly £140 plus. Rough Fells sold to £126 from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh. A pen of Swaledale tups sold to £108 from RA Clegg & LD Bennett, Seathwaite.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Closing Sale Of Store Hoggs 23rd March 2023

The closing sale of 950 store hoggs created plenty of interest from new and returning buyers, resulting in a fast trade from start to finish. Some saying perhaps one of the dearest sales seen this season. A run of nice bred Texel hoggs from C Jackson, Ingleton achieved a top price of £117, with a further ten pens selling well over the £100 mark. Nicer bred hoggs were regularly selling at £90-£95 with the smaller meated hoggs around the £75 mark. There was still some strong runs of Mule hoggs forward selling to a top of £100 from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands, with other pens of Mules selling to £99.50 from Messrs Hodgson, Patterdale. All Mule hoggs forward averaged £80. Cheviot hoggs sold to £101 from R Doran, Winmarleigh. 302 Swaledale hoggs were forward, selling to a faster rate than expected. OR Hodgson, Old Hutton peaked the sale section at £72 with other pens selling to £65 for fifty from Messer Hodgson, Patterdale. Herdwick hoggs sold to £85 from SC Gorst, Broughton Mills who sold other pens to £72. A bumper entry of 111 calves were forward this morning, well above numbers in other local centres. Two month old British Blue bulls from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale sold to £595 with other British Blues selling at £475 from Tom Barron Farms. All British Blue bulls forward averaged £335. Charolais bull calves sold to a top of £575 from WG Farms, Cockerham with six Charolais bull calves forward averaging £432. A run of weaned Hereford bull calves from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green peaked at £430. Heifer calves were keenly sort after at Lancaster, Charolais’s sold to £485 from WG Farms, Cockerham. A run of well grown Aberdeen Angus heifers from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel sold to £355 with British Blue heifers selling to £340 twice from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale and JR

Store Cattle
The weekly sale of stores saw 195 through the main ring with buyers eager to fill orders. The trade yet again up a gear on the week, with steers averaging a tremendous £1330 and heifers a fantastic £1260.
A very good show of well fleshed cattle throughout the sale saw R&E Butterfield, Bentham hit the top spot this week in both the steer and heifer section. Firstly, with a tank of a Limousin steer realising £1880 and then their stylish Limousin heifer at £1680. It was good to see R Collinge & Son, Newton back at Lancaster, they were not far behind at £1860 for a Limousin steer, this home also sold Aberdeen Angus steers at £1860. R&E Butterfield, Bentham continued their good day with two more Limousin steers at £1820 and £1800. Regular Lancaster supporters SH&LE Birkett, Carnforth saw his 32 month old British Blue steer at £1780 with JC Prickett, Mewith at the same price for Aberdeen Angus’s.
T&E Garlick, Freckleton run of quality cattle saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1560 with KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling not far behind at £1520, J&JM Walmsley, Pilling achieving the same price for British Blues and Charolais heifers were at £1500 from EJ Ward & Son, Intake. Vendors are urged to enter cattle with confidence for next Friday’s sale.

OTM Cattle
Not “99 red balloons” as the song goes but 99 OTM cattle through the bottom ring. A good show of well meated cattle were on offer, for a full ringside of buyer with an out of this world average of 190.07p/kg for all forward.
Dairy OTM cattle by the lump today saw Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale achieve £1847 for a Friesian, MD Close & Son, Arkholme £1765 and Lawson Dairy, Cockerham not far behind at £1738. Lawson Dairy also had the top per kilo, for a Friesian at 221.5p/kg with WN&D Smith, Cockerham achieving the same price. A good show of beef bred OTM cows today saw Herefords from JE&AC Clark & Son, Melling sell to £1803.95, this home also had others Herefords at £1706. HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon sold Limousins to 219.5p/kg with JE&AC Clark continuing their good day with Aberdeen Angus’s at 214.5p/kg and Herefords to 214p/kg.
OTM heifers in Lancaster today saw HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon sell to 269.5p/kg or £1980.83 for a British Blue with other beef bred heifers to 209.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from C Hargreaves & Son, Sunderland Point. Dairy bred heifers from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham achieved £1354 or 229.5p/kg for a Friesian, who also had others at £1289 or 231.5p/kg. Other Friesian heifer prices included £1229 or 219.5p/kg from AB&J Parkinson & Sons, Out Rawcliffe.
Just a handful of OTM steers in today saw A Kirkby & Co, Pilling sell to £1911.99 or 244.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus and JC Prickett, Mewith at 249.5p/kg or £1521.
A small number of bulls sold to £1893 for a Hereford from W&S Airey, Whittingham with J Gerrard & Son, Thurnham to £1657.50 also for a Hereford.
More OTM cattle are required every week at Lancaster to satisfy buyers demand.
