Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Monday 21st November 2022.

Prime Lambs

A good yard of 1050 prime lambs sold to a keen and competitive trade averaging 245ppk with well finished lambs selling to a premium. Heavy weight lambs sold to a top price of £149 for Beltex cross lambs from WA Cornall, Barnacre. With Suffolk’s to £145 from M&YS Barker, Halton. And Texel cross lambs to £142 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Plenty of heavy weight continental bred lambs regular selling between £135-£145 mark. Well bred lambs were keenly bid for once again at Lancaster with Beltexs selling to a top of 286ppk from B&SA Cater, Ellel. A large show of hill bred lambs were forward with meat once again keenly bid for. Mules sold to a top of £138.50 from GF&EE Holt, Chipping with others at £137 from TA&RM Dawson, Quernmore. Light weight lambs saw a jump in prices in the previous weeks with 37-41kg regular selling to the 245-250ppk mark.

Abit more life in the mule ewes today with a full pen from KA Purtill, Wigan selling to £100. 18 strong Swaledale ewes from WA Cornall, Barnacre sold to £77.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Sale of all classes of Pigs, Tuesday 22nd November 2022.

Pigs

A shortage of well finished prime pigs today saw buyers leave empty handed and unable to fulfil orders. A top price of £178 was achieved by MP Tattersall, Langholm for Duroc x gilts. Closely followed by Pietrain x gilts from TS Wilson, Cockermouth achieving £170. Prime boars sold to £160 for Duroc x from MP Tattersall, Landholm with others at £150 from TS Wilson. Prime hogs sold to £145 for Large White x from GG&MA Long, Pennington. Top pence per kilogram today was 181p/kg achieving by TS Wilson selling gilts. Other well finished pigs generally achieving 140p/kg to 170 p/kg depending on breed and type. A huge entry of over 100 store and weaner pigs saw a top price of £63 achieved for Pietrain x gilts from M Skillings, Rosendale who sold others at £146. Weaners sold to £30 for Large White x from J GE Heseltine & Son, Skipton and Dumfries House Farm, Dumfries. The youngest weaners sold to £17 for Gloucester all Spots from MK&LK Whitley & Son, Summerbridge.

Prime Lambs

An entry of 1438 prime lambs sold to an overall market average of 246p/kg for lambs ranging from 31kg to 60kg with over a third of the entry being heavy weight lambs (49kg plus). Well-bred heavy weight lambs sold to a top price of £162 for three quarter bred Texel’s from R Allen, Ings with Suffolk x selling to £149 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet, with £148 achieving by F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston and TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston selling Texel x. Heavy weight lambs regularly sold at £132-£145. Standard lambs sold to £133 for Texel x from Wannops Farms Limited, Morecambe. Beltex x archived £132 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside with others regularly achieving £112-£122. Top pence per kilogram today was a 308p/kg achieved for a pair of Beltex x lambs from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Beltex lambs achieving 292p/kg from JG&PH Thompson and Texel to 280p/kg from AJ&SE Burrow, Milnthorpe. Wellbred three quarter and pure bred lambs nicely selling at 260p/kg to 280p/kg. Hill lambs are now coming forward in greater numbers selling to £138 for Cheviots from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh and Messers J Allonby & Sons, Grayrigg. Mules sold to £132 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

Well finished light weight lambs continue to sell to a premium, selling to £101 for Texel x from EM Standing, Witherslack with others at £98 from M Allen, Yealand. Hill lambs sold to £77 for Swaledales and £68 for Rough Fells. Light weight lambs regularly achieving 225-240p/kg depending on breed, quality and finish.

Calves & Stirks

90 calves were forward at J36 today with a very mixed show of calves forward, as many vendors are saving calves for the Christmas show and sale in a fortnight’s time. Weaned calves once again met plenty of bidding with Limousin bulls selling to £390 from Langley Park, Millom who sold others to £380. British Blue bulls saw a top of £370 from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck. Continental bred bull calves were regularly selling at £250£300. Native bred bull calves saw a mixed trade with Herefords selling to a top of £245 from J Hornby & Sons, Stank. British Blue heifers sold to £350 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with other British Blues selling to £300 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Dairy bulls saw a steady trade with Friesians selling to £62 from Whitestone Farms, Fleckviehs to £60 from RG&JA Clarke, Endmoor with younger bulls meeting realisation. Please can we remind vendors to enter stirks for the catalogue, to assist with conversing for buyers. British Blue bulls sold to a top of £690 from RJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Shorthorn bullocks sold to £620 from J&E Lancaster, Ulverston. A full pen of six-month-old Aberdeen Angus bullocks from C Greenwood, Crompton sold to £595. The heifer trade topped at £680 from F&TE Park, Crook.

The store cattle trade improves on the fortnight with many more needed to satisfy our good ring side of buyers at J36. Limousin bullocks led the way at £1390 from T Metcalfe, Garsdale with Montbeliarde bullocks selling to £1210 from JE Wightman, Lupton, who also sold a full pen of Aberdeen Angus bullocks sold to £1180. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1175 from T&SB Proctor, Great Musgrave who also sold others to £1150. Galloway bullocks sold to £1150 from KD&L Armer, Newbiggan on Lune. The heifer trade topped at £1210 from A Cottam, Crossthwaite for a British Blue who sold others to £1200. A nice run of heifers from A Riley, Nether Kellet saw a pen of four Limousin sell to £1150. Native bred heifers were keenly bid for with Hereford heifers selling twice to £1150 from CP Bateman, Docker and A Riley.

Dairy cows sold to a top price of 187p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son, Lupton with other Holstein Friesian to 181.5p/kg from WH Ktichen & Son, Helsington and 177.5p/kg from AE&MK Hayhurst, Natland. Other dairy cows sold to 177.5p/kg for Fleckviehs from SJ&J Hodgson & Son, Colton and 164.5p/kg for a dairy Shorthorn from JR Handley, Whinfell. Very few beef cows forward today with a top price of 177.5p/kg for a Limousin from T Metcalfe, Sedbergh with British Blues to 164.5p/kg from GM Redmayne & Son, Ings and Aberdeen Angus’s to 151.5p/kg from W Caley & Sons, Windermere. Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son, Lupton achieving £1421. All cull cows today averaged 152p/kg. OTM heifers sold to 114.5p/kg for a Limousin x from E Dodgson, Kendal with a British Blue x to 207.5p/kg from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington and an Aberdeen Angus to 194.5p/kg from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Dairy heifer sold to 167.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Top grossing heifer was a heifer from BJ Bowness, Kendal achieving £1449.

OTM steers sold to 207.5p/kg and £1218 for a Hereford from GM Redmayne, Ing. Cast bulls sold to 129.5p/kg and £1178 for a Beef Shorthorn from D&T Wood, Haverthwaite.

Bull calves sold to a top price of £500 for a British Blue x from J&G Thornley, Kirkham who sold Charolais at £460 and other British Blues at £440. Month old bull calves sold to £260 for British Blues from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham, who sold others at £230. £200 was achieved for a 16 day old British Blue bull from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. An entry of young dairy bulls today saw Holstein Friesians sell to £60 from JR Newsham & Son. Heifer calves peaked at £280 for British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with younger

British Blue heifers to £215 from AD&R Milner, Garstang and £205 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. Native sired calves saw Aberdeen Angus bulls sell to £280 from AD&R Milner, Garstang with Aberdeen Angus heifers to £230 from EW&R Towers, Hornby. An entry of weaned steer calves from EW&R Towers, Hornby saw British Blues sell to £550 and £530 with Fleckviehs to £470 and Norwegian Reds to £370.

Heifer stirks sold to a top price of £910 for a British Blue from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel who sold other British Blue heifers to £670 and a ring full of Aberdeen Angus heifers at £660. Six-month-old Simmental x heifers from S Moore, Pilling sold at £570. Younger heifer stirks selling to £650 for British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with other British Blues at £520 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme and Aberdeen Angus to £500 from WJ&E Woodhouse, Nateby. NWA Lancaster maintained the momentum with an increased number of store cattle selling to a sharper traded with buyers in attendance for all classers and types and many leaving unable to fulfil orders. The sale peaked at £1760 for a pen of five Charolais x steers from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale. Aberdeen Angus’s sold to £1640 from T&E Garlick & Sons, Freckleton with a pen of five from G Sagar & Son, Caton achieving £1500 and WG&RG Riley selling over aged Aberdeen Angus x steers at £1480. British Blues sold to £1470 from JC Prickett, Mewith with others at £1440 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton. Diary bred steers sold to £1330 for Fleckviehs from JC Prickett, Mewith with others at £1260 from AG Pratts, Sedbergh with British Friesians to £1080 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellett. All steers today averaged £1199. Store heifers sold to a top price of £1470 for an Aberdeen Angus from WH Swindlehurst, Longton with £1370

achieved for Aberdeen Angus from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe and Limousins from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. British Blues sold to £1310 from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton with Herefords also achieving £1310 from TH Wensley & Son, Kirkham. Over aged heifers sold to £1360 for a Holstein Friesians from H&C Pickervance. All heifers today averaged £1128.

Catalogue entries are required by 12 noon Monday for next Fridays sale. A special note - Lancaster’s Christmas prize show and sale will take place on Friday 9th December with classes for best pair of heifers and best pair of bullocks and the champion pair receiving the T Owen memorial trophy.

105 OTM cattle sold to an overall market average of 154.5p/kg with over two thirds of the entry being dairy cows. Heavy good confirmation beef cows were in short supply and sold to 237.5p/kg for a Limousin from JM&PK Ion, Holton with a British Blue achieving 207.5p/kg from A Thompson, Carnforth and 197.5p/kg for a Aberdeen Angus from Pilling hall, Pilling. Heavy weight dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington and F&E Harrison, Wray. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 170185p/kg with mediums 145-160p/kg and parlour types 105-125p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesians from P&M Crackles, Burrow achieving £1466 OTM heifers sold to 241p/kg from JC Prickett, Mewith with others at 209.5p/kg from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with the top grossing being £1603 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham. Steers sold to 229.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from H Birkett & Son, Morecambe and a Limousin from JC Prickett, Mewith. Closely followed by an Aberdeen Angus from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling. Top grossing was an Aberdeen Angus from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling at £1391. A small entry of Cull bulls sold to 184.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling and £1289 for a Limousin from Messrs Beaty, Troutbeck.
