Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 22nd May 2023.
Spring Lambs
A competitive trade was seen for all spring lambs forward with the weekly ringside of buyers in attendance and a competitive trade for all classes and types. The sale topped at £180 for pure Charollais lambs from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Smart bred Texel lambs from J&S Horner, Ingleton sold to £165, with Beltexs from the same good home selling to £163. Plenty of interest was shown in heavy lambs at Lancaster market with a full pen of 52kg Hampshire lambs selling to £159 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton with many pens selling at £150 plus. Lighter lambs saw an improved trade with 40kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip selling to £150 with these type of lambs regularly selling at 350p/kg plus.

Prime Hoggs
A good entry for the time of year with 450 hoggs forward, with once again meated hoggs selling to a premium and leaner types harder to place on the day. The sale topped at £164 from AG Butler, Hambleton with a pen of ten Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £150. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at £140£150. Mules sold to a top of £145 with Cheviots selling to £144 from J&H Davis, Garstang. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved.

Cast Sheep
A flying trade for all ewes forward with Texels selling to £180 from JS Horner, Ingleton and Charollais from the same home to £178. The best Continental bred ewes were regularly £150 plus, with Mules selling to a top of £138 twice from T&E Burrow, Slyne and PD Anderton, Scorton. Mashams sold to £130 from W Pinder, Clitheroe, Swaledale sold to a top of £110 from JA Simpson, Barnacre with other pens of Swaledales to £105 from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Many more ewes could be sold to the vendors advantage in the coming weeks.

Pigs
A sale made up of entirely prime pigs today, saw a top price of £222 for a pen of four Large White x pigs from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold others at £182. Prime gilts sold to £205 for heavy weight Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping with other heavy weight pigs selling to £182 from D Lord, Preesall and £180 from T Hornsby, Silloth. Light weight pigs sold to £175 for Pietrain x gilts from W Stamper. Top pence for kilo this week was 206p/kg achieved by JM Navesey, Darwen for Large White x hoggs and gilts, with other well finished Large White x pigs generally 165p/kg-185p/kg.
A small entry of cull sows sold to £100 and 45p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. A large crowd of buyers in attendance with many leaving empty handed and keen to return at the next pig sale on Tuesday 13th June.
Spring Lambs
Trade improves week on week in the spring lamb section with more needed to satisfy our strong ringside of buyers at Junction 36. The sale topped at £188 for a pair of Beltex x lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel lambs selling to £183 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Heavy lambs were keenly sort after and regularly selling at £165-£170. An improved trade for meated lighter lambs, with these types regularly selling at 345-360p/kg. Top pence per kilogram was 385p/kg attained by D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Butch type lambs were frequently selling at 370p/kg-380p/kg.

Sheep With Lambs At Foot
Breeding sheep would be the dearest seen all season, a cracking run of Mule hoggs from Messrs Hayton, Colby saw a pen of twelve with Texel lambs sell to £260, with other pens of ten from the same good home selling to £240. RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck continue to bring smart bred hoggs which saw their best sell to £220. The on-going flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal saw aged Texel ewes with Beltex twins sell to £300. Texel ewes from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell sold to £275. A pen of ten Mule ewes sucking Texel twin lambs form P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £240. Ewes sucking single lambs were in keen demand with the best seeing aged Texel ewes from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell sell to £205. With the continued good weather and the grass growing, there is still plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot. Prime Hoggs
Once again a two tier trade was seen with meat keenly bid for and leaner grassy type hoggs meeting less demand. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £167 from E Dodgson, Kendal with others to £158 from WH Kitchen & Son, Helsington with heavy meated hoggs regularly selling at the £140-£150 mark. Mule saw a top of £147 from J&J Huck, Burneside with Cheviots selling to £140 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. A tremendous run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw a ring full of Scotch hoggs at 42kg sell to £130.50. Heavy pure bred ewes sold to £172 for a Texel from E Dodgson, Kendal with Dutch spotted selling to £168 from AJ&EJ Platt, Barrow in Furness. Other Texels at £166 from Messrs Wightman & Mason, Burton and Beltexs achieving £158 from K Kenyon, Slaidburn. First x ewes sold to £146 for Suffolk x from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington and Texel x £146 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Cheviot Mules sold to £138 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell and North Country Mule to £114 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank. Hill bred ewes sold to £128 for Rough Fells from BJ Bainbridge, Shap, Cheviots to £112 from M Allen, Carnforth and Swaledales £104 from D Sharp, Lyth. The cull ewe trade is forecast to remain strong, with sellers encouraged to take advantage of the strong trade.

A large entry of store cattle was forward at the late May sale, with a busy ring side of buyers in attendance keen to secure additional stock and take advantage of the high beef trade. Steers sold to a top price of £1540 for a Beef Shorthorn from JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth. An Aberdeen Angus sold to £1510 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow who sold other Limousins and Angus’s at £1475 and £1470. A run of well farmed steers from Lowther Park, Penrith sold to £1470 for Aberdeen Angus’s with others at £1440. British Blue steers sold to £1440 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Hereford x sold to £1350 from MJ Waller, Lupton with Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Lyth achieving £1270. Yearling steers sold to £1230 for a Limousin x from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon closely followed by Blonde x achieving £1220 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere. All cull cows today averaged 196p/kg with an entry of predominately dairy bred cows. No real strength in the beef cow section today, with feeding types selling to 231.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with other feeding cows generally 215p/kg to 230p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from BJ Bowness, Kendal closely followed by a Saler from M&M Carr, Carnforth achieving £1920. Dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from C Preston, Millom with others selling to £1383 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington. Other dairy cows were generally achieving 180p/kg-190p/kg. Cull bulls sold to 214.5p/kg or £1981 for Limousin from JA&J Harper, Killington with others selling to 199.5p/kg from K Wrathall, Broughton in Furness or £1935 from J Turnball, Meathorp.

Trade remains very strong for an entry of predominately younger calves this week. Bull calves sold to £375 for month old British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe who sold others at £370, as did Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale.
A run of month old Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham sold to £345, £340 and £335. Reared bull calves sold to £555, from a wonderful run of Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £540. Reared Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £455 from J&M Coar & Son, Clitheroe who sold others at £425.

Heifer calves sold to £325 for British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with other British Blue x from WG Farms Ltd also achieved £325. Charolais x from the same home sold at £310. Reared heifers sold to £550 and £520 for Aberdeen Angus’s from IT Richardson, Catforth with Hereford x to £455 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. A high quality entry of store cattle was forward at the popular weekly sale at Lancaster, with a red hot trade seen just like the weather outside. Steers sold to a top price of £1940 on two occasions for British Blue x and Limousin x from GT&C Blezard, Conder Green. Other heavy well finished steers sold to £1900 for Simmental x from TJ Lloyd, Settle with others regularly £1580 to £1700. Native sired steers peaked at £1920 for an Aberdeen Angus x from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling with other Aberdeen Angus £1780 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. A ring full of Hereford x achieved £1490 from J Lamb, Lancaster. Dairy bred steers sold to £1640 for British Friesians from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell with others at £1260 from TJ Lloyd Settle. The popular sale of young stores and stirks attracted a large crowd of buyers keen to secure replacement stock. Bulls sold to a top price of £1480 for a British Blue x from J Burrow & Son, Barton who sold others at £1380. Yearling suckler bred bulls sold to £1300 for Limousins from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. Dairy bulls sold to £880 for Fleckviehs from P&ME Higginson, Pilling with younger six month old bulls selling to £660 from JR Newsham & Sons, Conder Green.
Steer stirks sold to £1240 for an Aberdeen Angus from R&D Kellet, Cockerham closely followed by a Simmental x from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe achieving £1210. A large entry of predominately eight -ten month old steers sold to £1020 for a ring full of Aberdeen Angus x from JW Thwaites, Tebay with others at £980 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. Once again Lancaster Action Mart leads the way, with an overall market average of 205p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 269p/kg and £2075 for a Limousin from Z Ward, Carnforth with others selling to 254p/kg for British Blue from AE&PC Capstick, Heversham and £1820 for an Aberdeen Angus from G Mayor, Tarleton. Dairy cows peaked at 229p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham and £1797 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd. Medium sorts were 195p/kg to 210p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 150p/kg to 170p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 264p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from JE Catterall & Family with other selling to £1683 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. Spring Lambs
A competitive trade was seen for all spring lambs forward with the weekly ringside of buyers in attendance and a competitive trade for all classes and types. The sale topped at £180 for pure Charollais lambs from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Smart bred Texel lambs from J&S Horner, Ingleton sold to £165, with Beltexs from the same good home selling to £163. Plenty of interest was shown in heavy lambs at Lancaster market with a full pen of 52kg Hampshire lambs selling to £159 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton with many pens selling at £150 plus. Lighter lambs saw an improved trade with 40kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip selling to £150 with these type of lambs regularly selling at 350p/kg plus.

A good entry for the time of year with 450 hoggs forward, with once again meated hoggs selling to a premium and leaner types harder to place on the day. The sale topped at £164 from AG Butler, Hambleton with a pen of ten Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £150. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at £140£150. Mules sold to a top of £145 with Cheviots selling to £144 from J&H Davis, Garstang. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved.

Pigs
A sale made up of entirely prime pigs today, saw a top price of £222 for a pen of four Large White x pigs from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold others at £182. Prime gilts sold to £205 for heavy weight Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping with other heavy weight pigs selling to £182 from D Lord, Preesall and £180 from T Hornsby, Silloth. Light weight pigs sold to £175 for Pietrain x gilts from W Stamper. Top pence for kilo this week was 206p/kg achieved by JM Navesey, Darwen for Large White x hoggs and gilts, with other well finished Large White x pigs generally 165p/kg-185p/kg.
A small entry of cull sows sold to £100 and 45p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. A large crowd of buyers in attendance with many leaving empty handed and keen to return at the next pig sale on Tuesday 13th June.
Spring Lambs
Trade improves week on week in the spring lamb section with more needed to satisfy our strong ringside of buyers at Junction 36. The sale topped at £188 for a pair of Beltex x lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel lambs selling to £183 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Heavy lambs were keenly sort after and regularly selling at £165-£170. An improved trade for meated lighter lambs, with these types regularly selling at 345-360p/kg. Top pence per kilogram was 385p/kg attained by D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Butch type lambs were frequently selling at 370p/kg-380p/kg.

Breeding sheep would be the dearest seen all season, a cracking run of Mule hoggs from Messrs Hayton, Colby saw a pen of twelve with Texel lambs sell to £260, with other pens of ten from the same good home selling to £240. RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck continue to bring smart bred hoggs which saw their best sell to £220. The on-going flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal saw aged Texel ewes with Beltex twins sell to £300. Texel ewes from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell sold to £275. A pen of ten Mule ewes sucking Texel twin lambs form P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £240. Ewes sucking single lambs were in keen demand with the best seeing aged Texel ewes from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell sell to £205. With the continued good weather and the grass growing, there is still plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot. Mule saw a top of £147 from J&J Huck, Burneside with Cheviots selling to £140 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. A tremendous run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw a ring full of Scotch hoggs at 42kg sell to £130.50. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 22nd May 2023.
Spring Lambs
A competitive trade was seen for all spring lambs forward with the weekly ringside of buyers in attendance and a competitive trade for all classes and types. The sale topped at £180 for pure Charollais lambs from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Smart bred Texel lambs from J&S Horner, Ingleton sold to £165, with Beltexs from the same good home selling to £163. Plenty of interest was shown in heavy lambs at Lancaster market with a full pen of 52kg Hampshire lambs selling to £159 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton with many pens selling at £150 plus. Lighter lambs saw an improved trade with 40kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip selling to £150 with these type of lambs regularly selling at 350p/kg plus.

Prime Hoggs
A good entry for the time of year with 450 hoggs forward, with once again meated hoggs selling to a premium and leaner types harder to place on the day. The sale topped at £164 from AG Butler, Hambleton with a pen of ten Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £150. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at £140£150. Mules sold to a top of £145 with Cheviots selling to £144 from J&H Davis, Garstang. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved.

A flying trade for all ewes forward with Texels selling to £180 from JS Horner, Ingleton and Charollais from the same home to £178. The best Continental bred ewes were regularly £150 plus, with Mules selling to a top of £138 twice from T&E Burrow, Slyne and PD Anderton, Scorton. Mashams sold to £130 from W Pinder, Clitheroe, Swaledale sold to a top of £110 from JA Simpson, Barnacre with other pens of Swaledales to £105 from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Many more ewes could be sold to the vendors advantage in the coming weeks.

Pigs
A sale made up of entirely prime pigs today, saw a top price of £222 for a pen of four Large White x pigs from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold others at £182. Prime gilts sold to £205 for heavy weight Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping with other heavy weight pigs selling to £182 from D Lord, Preesall and £180 from T Hornsby, Silloth. Light weight pigs sold to £175 for Pietrain x gilts from W Stamper. Top pence for kilo this week was 206p/kg achieved by JM Navesey, Darwen for Large White x hoggs and gilts, with other well finished Large White x pigs generally 165p/kg-185p/kg.
A small entry of cull sows sold to £100 and 45p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. A large crowd of buyers in attendance with many leaving empty handed and keen to return at the next pig sale on Tuesday 13th June.
Spring Lambs
Trade improves week on week in the spring lamb section with more needed to satisfy our strong ringside of buyers at Junction 36. The sale topped at £188 for a pair of Beltex x lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel lambs selling to £183 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Heavy lambs were keenly sort after and regularly selling at £165-£170. An improved trade for meated lighter lambs, with these types regularly selling at 345-360p/kg. Top pence per kilogram was 385p/kg attained by D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Butch type lambs were frequently selling at 370p/kg-380p/kg.

Sheep With Lambs At Foot
Breeding sheep would be the dearest seen all season, a cracking run of Mule hoggs from Messrs Hayton, Colby saw a pen of twelve with Texel lambs sell to £260, with other pens of ten from the same good home selling to £240. RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck continue to bring smart bred hoggs which saw their best sell to £220. The on-going flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal saw aged Texel ewes with Beltex twins sell to £300. Texel ewes from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell sold to £275. A pen of ten Mule ewes sucking Texel twin lambs form P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £240. Ewes sucking single lambs were in keen demand with the best seeing aged Texel ewes from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell sell to £205. With the continued good weather and the grass growing, there is still plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot. Once again a two tier trade was seen with meat keenly bid for and leaner grassy type hoggs meeting less demand. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £167 from E Dodgson, Kendal with others to £158 from WH Kitchen & Son, Helsington with heavy meated hoggs regularly selling at the £140-£150 mark. Mule saw a top of £147 from J&J Huck, Burneside with Cheviots selling to £140 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. A tremendous run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw a ring full of Scotch hoggs at 42kg sell to £130.50. Heavy pure bred ewes sold to £172 for a Texel from E Dodgson, Kendal with Dutch spotted selling to £168 from AJ&EJ Platt, Barrow in Furness. Other Texels at £166 from Messrs Wightman & Mason, Burton and Beltexs achieving £158 from K Kenyon, Slaidburn. First x ewes sold to £146 for Suffolk x from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington and Texel x £146 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Cheviot Mules sold to £138 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell and North Country Mule to £114 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank. Hill bred ewes sold to £128 for Rough Fells from BJ Bainbridge, Shap, Cheviots to £112 from M Allen, Carnforth and Swaledales £104 from D Sharp, Lyth. The cull ewe trade is forecast to remain strong, with sellers encouraged to take advantage of the strong trade.

Steers sold to a top price of £1540 for a Beef Shorthorn from JW&TE Sharp Ltd, Lyth. An Aberdeen Angus sold to £1510 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow who sold other Limousins and Angus’s at £1475 and £1470. A run of well farmed steers from Lowther Park, Penrith sold to £1470 for Aberdeen Angus’s with others at £1440. British Blue steers sold to £1440 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Hereford x sold to £1350 from MJ Waller, Lupton with Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Lyth achieving £1270. Yearling steers sold to £1230 for a Limousin x from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon closely followed by Blonde x achieving £1220 from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere. All cull cows today averaged 196p/kg with an entry of predominately dairy bred cows. No real strength in the beef cow section today, with feeding types selling to 231.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with other feeding cows generally 215p/kg to 230p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from BJ Bowness, Kendal closely followed by a Saler from M&M Carr, Carnforth achieving £1920. Dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from C Preston, Millom with others selling to £1383 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington. Other dairy cows were generally achieving 180p/kg-190p/kg. Calves & Weanlings
Trade remains very strong for an entry of predominately younger calves this week. Bull calves sold to £375 for month old British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe who sold others at £370, as did Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale.
A run of month old Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham sold to £345, £340 and £335. Reared bull calves sold to £555, from a wonderful run of Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £540. Reared Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £455 from J&M Coar & Son, Clitheroe who sold others at £425.

Heifer calves sold to £325 for British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with other British Blue x from WG Farms Ltd also achieved £325. Charolais x from the same home sold at £310. Reared heifers sold to £550 and £520 for Aberdeen Angus’s from IT Richardson, Catforth with Hereford x to £455 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. A high quality entry of store cattle was forward at the popular weekly sale at Lancaster, with a red hot trade seen just like the weather outside. Steers sold to a top price of £1940 on two occasions for British Blue x and Limousin x from GT&C Blezard, Conder Green. Other heavy well finished steers sold to £1900 for Simmental x from TJ Lloyd, Settle with others regularly £1580 to £1700. Native sired steers peaked at £1920 for an Aberdeen Angus x from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling with other Aberdeen Angus £1780 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. A ring full of Hereford x achieved £1490 from J Lamb, Lancaster. Dairy bred steers sold to £1640 for British Friesians from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell with others at £1260 from TJ Lloyd Settle. The popular sale of young stores and stirks attracted a large crowd of buyers keen to secure replacement stock. Bulls sold to a top price of £1480 for a British Blue x from J Burrow & Son, Barton who sold others at £1380. Yearling suckler bred bulls sold to £1300 for Limousins from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. Dairy bulls sold to £880 for Fleckviehs from P&ME Higginson, Pilling with younger six month old bulls selling to £660 from JR Newsham & Sons, Conder Green.
Steer stirks sold to £1240 for an Aberdeen Angus from R&D Kellet, Cockerham closely followed by a Simmental x from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe achieving £1210. Once again Lancaster Action Mart leads the way, with an overall market average of 205p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 269p/kg and £2075 for a Limousin from Z Ward, Carnforth with others selling to 254p/kg for British Blue from AE&PC Capstick, Heversham and £1820 for an Aberdeen Angus from G Mayor, Tarleton. Dairy cows peaked at 229p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham and £1797 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd. Medium sorts were 195p/kg to 210p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 150p/kg to 170p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 264p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from JE Catterall & Family with other selling to £1683 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. Spring Lambs
A competitive trade was seen for all spring lambs forward with the weekly ringside of buyers in attendance and a competitive trade for all classes and types. The sale topped at £180 for pure Charollais lambs from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Smart bred Texel lambs from J&S Horner, Ingleton sold to £165, with Beltexs from the same good home selling to £163. Plenty of interest was shown in heavy lambs at Lancaster market with a full pen of 52kg Hampshire lambs selling to £159 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton with many pens selling at £150 plus. Lighter lambs saw an improved trade with 40kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip selling to £150 with these type of lambs regularly selling at 350p/kg plus.

A good entry for the time of year with 450 hoggs forward, with once again meated hoggs selling to a premium and leaner types harder to place on the day. The sale topped at £164 from AG Butler, Hambleton with a pen of ten Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £150. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at £140£150. Mules sold to a top of £145 with Cheviots selling to £144 from J&H Davis, Garstang. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved.

Pigs
A sale made up of entirely prime pigs today, saw a top price of £222 for a pen of four Large White x pigs from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold others at £182. Prime gilts sold to £205 for heavy weight Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping with other heavy weight pigs selling to £182 from D Lord, Preesall and £180 from T Hornsby, Silloth. Light weight pigs sold to £175 for Pietrain x gilts from W Stamper. Top pence for kilo this week was 206p/kg achieved by JM Navesey, Darwen for Large White x hoggs and gilts, with other well finished Large White x pigs generally 165p/kg-185p/kg.
A small entry of cull sows sold to £100 and 45p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. A large crowd of buyers in attendance with many leaving empty handed and keen to return at the next pig sale on Tuesday 13th June.
Spring Lambs
Trade improves week on week in the spring lamb section with more needed to satisfy our strong ringside of buyers at Junction 36. The sale topped at £188 for a pair of Beltex x lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel lambs selling to £183 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Heavy lambs were keenly sort after and regularly selling at £165-£170. An improved trade for meated lighter lambs, with these types regularly selling at 345-360p/kg. Top pence per kilogram was 385p/kg attained by D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Butch type lambs were frequently selling at 370p/kg-380p/kg.

Breeding sheep would be the dearest seen all season, a cracking run of Mule hoggs from Messrs Hayton, Colby saw a pen of twelve with Texel lambs sell to £260, with other pens of ten from the same good home selling to £240. RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck continue to bring smart bred hoggs which saw their best sell to £220. The on-going flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal saw aged Texel ewes with Beltex twins sell to £300. Texel ewes from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell sold to £275. A pen of ten Mule ewes sucking Texel twin lambs form P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £240. Ewes sucking single lambs were in keen demand with the best seeing aged Texel ewes from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell sell to £205. With the continued good weather and the grass growing, there is still plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot. Mule saw a top of £147 from J&J Huck, Burneside with Cheviots selling to £140 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. A tremendous run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw a ring full of Scotch hoggs at 42kg sell to £130.50. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 22nd May 2023.
Spring Lambs
A competitive trade was seen for all spring lambs forward with the weekly ringside of buyers in attendance and a competitive trade for all classes and types. The sale topped at £180 for pure Charollais lambs from S Wilson & Sons, Scotforth. Smart bred Texel lambs from J&S Horner, Ingleton sold to £165, with Beltexs from the same good home selling to £163. Plenty of interest was shown in heavy lambs at Lancaster market with a full pen of 52kg Hampshire lambs selling to £159 from DR&BE Rolfe, Scorton with many pens selling at £150 plus. Lighter lambs saw an improved trade with 40kg Texel lambs from RA Holmes, Inskip selling to £150 with these type of lambs regularly selling at 350p/kg plus.

A good entry for the time of year with 450 hoggs forward, with once again meated hoggs selling to a premium and leaner types harder to place on the day. The sale topped at £164 from AG Butler, Hambleton with a pen of ten Texel hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth selling to £150. Heavy hoggs were regularly selling at £140£150. Mules sold to a top of £145 with Cheviots selling to £144 from J&H Davis, Garstang. An overall market averaged of 258p/kg was achieved.

A flying trade for all ewes forward with Texels selling to £180 from JS Horner, Ingleton and Charollais from the same home to £178. The best Continental bred ewes were regularly £150 plus, with Mules selling to a top of £138 twice from T&E Burrow, Slyne and PD Anderton, Scorton. Mashams sold to £130 from W Pinder, Clitheroe, Swaledale sold to a top of £110 from JA Simpson, Barnacre with other pens of Swaledales to £105 from WI&AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Many more ewes could be sold to the vendors advantage in the coming weeks.

Pigs
A sale made up of entirely prime pigs today, saw a top price of £222 for a pen of four Large White x pigs from JM Navesey, Darwen who sold others at £182. Prime gilts sold to £205 for heavy weight Large White x from W Stamper, Chipping with other heavy weight pigs selling to £182 from D Lord, Preesall and £180 from T Hornsby, Silloth. Light weight pigs sold to £175 for Pietrain x gilts from W Stamper. Top pence for kilo this week was 206p/kg achieved by JM Navesey, Darwen for Large White x hoggs and gilts, with other well finished Large White x pigs generally 165p/kg-185p/kg.
A small entry of cull sows sold to £100 and 45p/kg from JM Navesey, Darwen. A large crowd of buyers in attendance with many leaving empty handed and keen to return at the next pig sale on Tuesday 13th June.
Spring Lambs
Trade improves week on week in the spring lamb section with more needed to satisfy our strong ringside of buyers at Junction 36. The sale topped at £188 for a pair of Beltex x lambs from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel lambs selling to £183 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Heavy lambs were keenly sort after and regularly selling at £165-£170. An improved trade for meated lighter lambs, with these types regularly selling at 345-360p/kg. Top pence per kilogram was 385p/kg attained by D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Butch type lambs were frequently selling at 370p/kg-380p/kg.

Sheep With Lambs At Foot
Breeding sheep would be the dearest seen all season, a cracking run of Mule hoggs from Messrs Hayton, Colby saw a pen of twelve with Texel lambs sell to £260, with other pens of ten from the same good home selling to £240. RC Wharton & Son, Drybeck continue to bring smart bred hoggs which saw their best sell to £220. The on-going flock reduction from P Mason, Burton in Kendal saw aged Texel ewes with Beltex twins sell to £300. Texel ewes from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell sold to £275. A pen of ten Mule ewes sucking Texel twin lambs form P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £240. Ewes sucking single lambs were in keen demand with the best seeing aged Texel ewes from JM&NJ Stickland, Whinfell sell to £205. With the continued good weather and the grass growing, there is still plenty of demand for sheep with lambs at foot. Once again a two tier trade was seen with meat keenly bid for and leaner grassy type hoggs meeting less demand. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £167 from E Dodgson, Kendal with others to £158 from WH Kitchen & Son, Helsington with heavy meated hoggs regularly selling at the £140-£150 mark. Mule saw a top of £147 from J&J Huck, Burneside with Cheviots selling to £140 from TE JS SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. A tremendous run of well finished hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston saw a ring full of Scotch hoggs at 42kg sell to £130.50. Other Texels at £166 from Messrs Wightman & Mason, Burton and Beltexs achieving £158 from K Kenyon, Slaidburn. First x ewes sold to £146 for Suffolk x from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington and Texel x £146 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Cheviot Mules sold to £138 from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell and North Country Mule to £114 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank. An Aberdeen Angus sold to £1510 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow who sold other Limousins and Angus’s at £1475 and £1470. A run of well farmed steers from Lowther Park, Penrith sold to £1470 for Aberdeen Angus’s with others at £1440. British Blue steers sold to £1440 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Hereford x sold to £1350 from MJ Waller, Lupton with Charolais from JC Walling & Son, Lyth achieving £1270. All cull cows today averaged 196p/kg with an entry of predominately dairy bred cows. No real strength in the beef cow section today, with feeding types selling to 231.5p/kg for a Limousin x from JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell with other feeding cows generally 215p/kg to 230p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from BJ Bowness, Kendal closely followed by a Saler from M&M Carr, Carnforth achieving £1920. Dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from C Preston, Millom with others selling to £1383 from JG&BJ Escolme, Killington. Other dairy cows were generally achieving 180p/kg-190p/kg. Cull bulls sold to 214.5p/kg or £1981 for Limousin from JA&J Harper, Killington with others selling to 199.5p/kg from K Wrathall, Broughton in Furness or £1935 from J Turnball, Meathorp.

Calves & Weanlings
Trade remains very strong for an entry of predominately younger calves this week. Bull calves sold to £375 for month old British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe who sold others at £370, as did Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale.
A run of month old Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham sold to £345, £340 and £335. Reared bull calves sold to £555, from a wonderful run of Hereford x from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £540. Reared Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £455 from J&M Coar & Son, Clitheroe who sold others at £425.

Heifer calves sold to £325 for British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with other British Blue x from WG Farms Ltd also achieved £325. Charolais x from the same home sold at £310. Reared heifers sold to £550 and £520 for Aberdeen Angus’s from IT Richardson, Catforth with Hereford x to £455 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Dairy bulls sold to £300 for a weaned Swedish Red & White with Brown Swiss selling to £195.

Store Cattle
A high quality entry of store cattle was forward at the popular weekly sale at Lancaster, with a red hot trade seen just like the weather outside. Steers sold to a top price of £1940 on two occasions for British Blue x and Limousin x from GT&C Blezard, Conder Green. Other heavy well finished steers sold to £1900 for Simmental x from TJ Lloyd, Settle with others regularly £1580 to £1700. Native sired steers peaked at £1920 for an Aberdeen Angus x from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling with other Aberdeen Angus £1780 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. A ring full of Hereford x achieved £1490 from J Lamb, Lancaster. Dairy bred steers sold to £1640 for British Friesians from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell with others at £1260 from TJ Lloyd Settle. A keen interest in steers suitable for turn out saw British Blue x sell to £1390 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole with British Blue x to £1300 from JA&ME Mawson, Penrith with others regularly £1100-£1250. Heifers sold to £1840 for a trio of Charolais x from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer with Limousin x selling to £1600 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens and British Blue x to £1410 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton. Native sired heifers sold to a top price of £1660 for a Hereford x from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £1410 from M Huck, Burneside. Heifers suitable for summer grazing sold to £1210 for Aberdeen Angus x from C Butler, Hambleton with British Blue x selling to £1200 from J&A Sheerin, Quernmore with others £1000£1100.
Stirks and Young Stores
The popular sale of young stores and stirks attracted a large crowd of buyers keen to secure replacement stock. Bulls sold to a top price of £1480 for a British Blue x from J Burrow & Son, Barton who sold others at £1380. Yearling suckler bred bulls sold to £1300 for Limousins from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. Dairy bulls sold to £880 for Fleckviehs from P&ME Higginson, Pilling with younger six month old bulls selling to £660 from JR Newsham & Sons, Conder Green.
Steer stirks sold to £1240 for an Aberdeen Angus from R&D Kellet, Cockerham closely followed by a Simmental x from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe achieving £1210. A large entry of predominately eight -ten month old steers sold to £1020 for a ring full of Aberdeen Angus x from JW Thwaites, Tebay with others at £980 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. British Blue x sold to £940 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel who also sold Hereford x at £880. Younger steers (6 months) sold to £680 for Hereford x and Aberdeen Angus x from J&M Coar & Son, Clitheroe. Heifer stirks sold to £1240 for a Simmental x from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe. Well reared heifer stirks (seventen months) sold to £890 for British Blue x from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with Aberdeen Angus x from JW Thwaites, Tebay at £80 and British Blue to £770 from ST Pye, Great Eccleston. The next catalogued sale of stirks, young stores and feeding bulls is on Friday 30th June. Vendors are encouraged to enter all classes of stock with confidence for the next weekly sale.

Once again Lancaster Action Mart leads the way, with an overall market average of 205p/kg.
Beef cows sold to 269p/kg and £2075 for a Limousin from Z Ward, Carnforth with others selling to 254p/kg for British Blue from AE&PC Capstick, Heversham and £1820 for an Aberdeen Angus from G Mayor, Tarleton. Dairy cows peaked at 229p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms, Cockerham and £1797 from Lawsons Dairy Ltd. Medium sorts were 195p/kg to 210p/kg, with leaner parlour sorts 150p/kg to 170p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 264p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from JE Catterall & Family with other selling to £1683 from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine. Other well fleshed heifers were 230p/kg to 250p/kg with dairies selling to 254p/kg for Holstein Friesians from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel and others £1608. Steers sold to 294p/kg and £1702 for a Limousin and 229p/kg and £1374 for a Holstein Friesian.
Nine stock bulls sold today with a top price of 214p/kg for Limousin from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet with others regularly 180p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus x from JF&J Hewitt & Family, Nateby totalling £2157.
