Rough Fell
North West Auctions is proud to continue its loyal support of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association with the largest entry to date. The judging was in the capable hands of Mr Stephen Dickinson. We take this opportunity to thank him for his time and expertise. A wonderful line up of sheep was put before him which we congratulate our vendors for the quality of sheep put before him. After much time and deliberation, he awarded the Champion rosette to the 1st prize Gimmer Shearling from TLB&J Knowles, High Borrowbridge with the Reserve Champion going to the 2nd prize Gimmer Shearling from JA Law, Marsh House Farm.
The Rough Diamonds shone bright today, with a new market record set for an In Lamb Rough Fell which sold for 3000gns for the champion. This much admired gimmer shearling was sired by Brownber Dambuster and in lamb to Birkhaw Emerald. The judge backed his judgement and went on to purchase the champion. The next top price was lot 24 for a Gimmer Shearling from MP&A Capstick which is sired by Catholes Action and in lamb to Longgills Fashion which sold to 1000gns. The Reserve Champion is lot 20 from JA Law which is sired by Brownber Dude and In Lamb to Longgils Chief which sold to 600gns. There was a wonderful buzz around the ring, seeing all Rough Fell In Lamb Shearling and Geld Gimmer Hoggs sell to a wonderful trade right throughout the sale.
KO Stones, Richmond sold a trio of Cheviot gimmer shearling selling to 550gns twice and 500gns.

Swaledale
The Diamond Delights show and sale of Swaledale stars saw the largest entry to date as this sale continues to grow in popularity. The sale was held on behalf of the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association saw the pre sale judging in the capable hands of John Walker, Dunsop Bridge who we thank for his time and expertise. He awarded his champion rosette to the first prize gimmer shearling from Robbie Hallam, which was sired by the Ghyll House and scanned in lamb with a single to the Hundith. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize Swaledale ewe from PE&KA Sowerby, Kirkby Stephen which was sired by the Bull & Cave and scanned in lamb with twins to the Acton tup which went on to sell for the top price Swaledale of the day achieving £1200. Other leading prices for Swaledales saw £1100 from A&M Skidmore, Tebay for a gimmer shearling sired by High Birkwith Endeavour 1st scanned in lamb with a single.

North West Auctions Diamond Delights sale of Blue Faced Leicesters boasted a strong entry once again with vendors traveling from far and wide to attend the sale. The pre sale show was in the capable hands of Lewis and Ridley Browell, Quarry House who we thank for their time and expertise. A wonderful entry of 26 gimmer hoggs were forward for the class oozing with quality and saw the first prize rosette awarded to J Bell with Cottage R021 which went on to win the overall Championship rosette selling for 4200gns to James Taylor of the Lunesdale flock. The reserve champion was awarded to RD Archer & Son of the Carry House flock with Carry House R055, This much admired powerful hogg when on to sell for 3000gns to WC Porter & Son of the Riddings flock. The first prize aged ewe was awarded to W&A Booth of the Smearsett flock with Smearsett N046, This powerful ewe scanned in lamb with twins to Harkerside N001 went on to sell for 1800gns to S&T Fawcett, Skipton. Winning the gimmer shearling class was PL&J Dawson of the Kentmere Hall flock with Kentmere Hall P024, scanned in lamb with triplets to Carry House R010 which went on to sell for 1200gns. Other leading prices in the Blue Faced Leicester section saw the leading hogg from W&A Booth, Smearsett sell Smearsett R029 for 3000gns to F Robertson, The Beeches. This was followed by 2700gns for Micklemoss R012 consigned by Messers Hodgson, High Borrans purchased by TA&J Dixon, Selside. A consignment from WM Reed & Sons created plenty of interest selling West Biggin R025 to 2500gns purchased by J Bell of the Cottage flock, followed by 2200gns for West Biggin R032 purchased by C Stephenson. Twice selling to 2000gns were gimmer hoggs from N Marston of the Highberries flock with Highberries R049 and R050 purchased by Burrow & Rutter. The pen leader from W&D Lawson of the Gragareth flock sold to 2000gns purchased by RW&KH Emmett of Wythop Hall flock with Gragareth R030. Also achieving 2000gns was A Brown of Macqueston flock with R042 which went on to sell to R Loughridge. Plenty more hoggs sold between 1500 and 2000gns. A couple of consignments of embryos forward peaked at 2000gns for a ewe carrying a pair from S Allen & Sons, Appleby with a pair of embryos sired by Riddings K001 and out of one of the best breeding ewes Greenhow M040. Other embryos sold to 1500gns from N Marston of the Highberries flock, the embryos were sired by Highberries Golden Boy and out of Smearcett K029 who is the full sister to the £24000 Smearcett K001. All Blue Faced Leicester gimmer hoggs forward sold to £1228, in lamb gimmer shearlings averaged £828 and in lamb ewes averaged £937.

Individual Breeding Sheep
A full ringside of buyers were present attracted by the wide variety on offer. Individuals sold to £1600 for a Dutch Shopped shearling scanned carrying twins from D Dixon, Grayrigg who sold others with singles at £1200. Charollais shearlings carrying Beltex twins from R Towers, Ingleton achieved £750. Suffolk ewes from G&K Richmond, Inglewhite sold to £420. Texel shearlings from PK&R Woof, Stainton sold to £420 with others at £400 from H&B Wharton, Tebay. Zwartbles sold to £500 from S Wareing, Catterall.
Commercial Sheep
The first sale of in lamb sheep season saw a competitive trade with buyers looking to purchase replacement stock. Mule shearlings sold to £180 from N Brown, Littledale with others from A Brown, Littledale also achieving £180. One crop Mule ewes from AK Robinson, Clapham also sold to £180. Texel x flock ewes from J Wilson, Millom sold to £170 who sold others at £160. Stronger sheep were generally £145-£165. Hill sheep sold to £105 for Swaledales from S Bosworth, Burnley. Others sold at £100 from O Hodgson, Old Hutton. Herdwicks in lamb to the BFL sold to £80 with Welsh ewes to £75 and Shetlands to £65.

Prime Hoggs
The weekly sale of prime hoggs today in Lancaster has an entry of 629 forward selling to an overall market average of 220p/kg, in keeping with other auction centres. Leading the way was 62kg hoggs from AT Alcock, Inskip selling Texels to £133 and Suffolks to £132 followed by other heavy weights to £132 for Suffolks from Sam Ayrton, Thurnham and Texels to £128 from the same home. Other heavy weight Texels sold to £126 from T&CM Kellsall & Sons, Chipping with plenty more in the region of £120. Nicely bred Continental hoggs saw a run of Texels from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham sell to 265p/kg, 262p/kg, 258p/kg and 250p/kg twice. Others from Andrew Butler twice sold to 255p/kg with plenty better bred hoggs in the region of 240p/kg.
Upland hoggs saw heavy weight Mules to £128 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton with heavy weight Cheviots to £125 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof. Other heavy weights saw Leicesters peaking at £119 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Horned hoggs peaked at £98.50 for Swaledales from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton.

A handful of store hoggs were forward today which saw the trade peak at £84 for Texels from B&SE Carter, Ellel.

An entry of 135 cast sheep forward today in Lancaster saw the trade remains very similar with Texel x ewes peaking at £138 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. This was followed by other Texel x ewes to £126, £124
and £120 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Suffolk ewes peaked at £120 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Cheviot Mules sold to £109 from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston with Mules peaking at £104 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, plenty of other pens of strong Mules sold in the late nineties. Horned sheep peaked at £63 for Swaledales from D&K Swarbirck, Out Rawcliffe with other Swaledale ewes to £59 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale.

Prime Hoggs
As seen throughout the country prime hoggs have taken a drop with a large amount of lamb meat being important from abroad and many wholesalers struggling to market hoggs at the moment. A larger number of hoggs forward in the market today, as many start to sell with the large costs of feeding the hoggs and lambing time sneaking ever closer. A full complement of prime hogg buyers saw in double figures of buyers present. Heavy weight hoggs continue to add up best pounds in the bank even though the trade for them was back. Heavies sold to a top of £138.50 for Suffolks from WT Whittaker& Son, Nether Kellet with other Suffolks to £134 from G Riley, Bolton le Sand. Heavy weight Texel’s peaked at £137 from HJ Cornthwaite, Cartmel Fell followed by others to £136.50 from N Barker, Burton in Kendal, £132 from J Dickinson, Milnthorpe and £131 and £130 from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar. There were plenty more heavy weight hoggs selling in the mid to late one hundred and twenties. Upland heavy weight hoggs sold to £137 and £126 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with heavy weight Cheviots selling to £122.50 from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar with Mules from the same home peaking at £110. Better bred conformation hoggs were still creating plenty of interest selling to a top of 300p/kg from EJ & AM Fox, Biggar with others to 285p/kg from G & MA Jackson, Little Eccleston. Handy weighted hoggs saw well fleshed inside fed regularly selling in the region of 220-230p/kg. Light weight hoggs sold to mixed demand. Horned hoggs saw in specification weight hoggs selling in the region of 200p/kg. There was an entry of 1356 hoggs forward selling to a market average of 210p/kg.

650 ewes were forward selling to another competitive trade at Junction 36, the sale peaked at £148 for Suffolk ewes from R&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Texels ewes from PK&R Woof, Stainton sold to £140 with others to £138. The best bred Texels ewes were regularly away in the top one hundred and thirties. Mule ewes sold to £108 from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton with others to £106 from EJ&M Redmayne, Samlesbury. Medium fit Mules were regularly selling at the £80-£85 pound mark. The hill ewe trade will be a little less on the week, topping at £84 for Dalesdbred from M Tyson, Lupton with Cheviots selling to £79 from SH&PI Bowes, Barrow in Furness who sold full pens of Scotch Black Face to £72.

Calves & Stirks
The 10th Anniversary show and sale of calves attracted most interest from buyers seen for sometime with the trade far stronger than expected. The pre-sale show judging was in the capable hands of Matthew Waller who we thank for his time and expertise. Winning the 10th anniversary plaque for the champion calf was A Pickthall, New Hutton with a British Blue bull going on to sell for £300 with the reserve champion awarded to B & JM Crowe, Witherslack with a British Blue heifer selling for £150. A special mention goes to the sale day sponsors who we thank for their continued support. The trade peaked at £400 for a five-week-old British Blue heifer from A Pickthall, New Hutton who sold other British Blue heifers to £360. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £390 at two-month-old from J & S Brakewell, Kirkby in Furness followed by £380 from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick. Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to a top of £360 from RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston with Angus heifers selling to £350 from W & S Airey, Whittington. Plenty more quality beef calves selling in excess of the three hundred pound mark with the buyers present willing to eagerly bid on quality well grown calves. Younger plainer beef calves met reality. Dairy bull calves peaked at £85 from Messrs Wilson, Allitwaite. Some lovely runs of suckler bred stirks were forward with a pair of Blonde bullocks selling to £1090 from B Wilson & Sons, Selside with Charolais bullocks selling to £1080 from R&BJ Cleaseby, Broughton in Furness. A run of 8 month old Limousin bullocks from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook sold to top of £940 heifers peaked at £880 for six month old Limousins from JA Atkinson & Partners, Selside.

North West Auctions were proud to host its 10th year anniversary show and sale of store cattle. The pre sale show was in the hands of familiar face John Bowling, who we thank for his time. We would also like to thank our pre sale sponsors Café Ambio, Dugdale Nutrition and Marsh Commercials. A super show of cattle were put before our
judge with the first prize Limousin heifer from MA&JA Winn, Burneside also taking the Championship. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize bullock from N Cooper & Sons, Ulverston. The trade was the dearest seen this side of the year at Junction 36, with all ages of cattle extremely well bid for and vendors leaving with a smile on their face. The trade peaked at £1850 for the champion heifer from MA&JA Winn, Burneside with the second place heifer selling to £1740 from JA&J Harper, Killington who sold other smart British Blue heifers to £1650. Strong smart heifers were extremely well bid for today. A lovely run of Limousin heifers from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal sold to £1660 with a pair for the same home selling to £1540. Yearling heifers sold to the strongest trade see for some time with the best selling to £1450 at nine months old from N Cooper & Sons, Ulverston with well fleshed grazing heifers regularly selling away at into the nine hundreds. The bullock trade saw a top of £1690 for Limousins from JA&J Harper with many strong bullocks selling at the £1500-£1600 mark. Yearling bullocks sold to £1570 for the reserve champion from N Cooper & Sons with other yearling bullocks selling to £1490 for a pair from HR&KA Hodgson, Barban with the best yearling bullocks regularly selling at the £1250-£1300 mark.
Native bred bullocks were once again keenly bid for at Junction 36 with Herefords selling to £1360 from JL Bird, Grange Over Sands and Aberdeen Angus to £1320 from JA Barnett, Shap with Aberdeen Angus heifer selling to £1290 from TW Nelson & son, Stainton.

A few runs of suckler bulls were forward today, with a pen of four selling to £1020 at eight months from D&DW Prickett, Farleton with others to £990 from AW Irvine, Ambleside.

OTM and Cast Cattle
Another increased entry of 89 cull cows and OTM cattle which sold to a fast and competitive trade with new customers in attendance both buying and selling. All cull cows averaged 189.5p/kg. Heavy well finished and well breed beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg on three occasions for a Stabilizer x cow from A Dixon & Son, Selside and Limousins from B Heys, Wigan. Other first grade beef cows were regularly selling at 195-210p/kg. Those suitable for finishing attraction a keen interest selling between 180p/kg and 190p/kg. Top grossing beef cow today was a Stabilizer from A Dixon & Son, Selside at £1813, closely followed by a South Devon from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston achieving £1760. Dairy cows sold to 204.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son, Lupton and Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness with other at 197.5p/kg from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston and Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal. Heavy weight dairy cows were regularly 185p/kg to 195p/kg with medium cows 170p/kg to 180p/kg and the leaner parlour types 140p/kg to 160p/kg. Top grossing diary cow today was a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg achieving £1633 with others at £1596 and £1593 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

Steers sold to 234p/kg and £1650 for Herefords from GM Redmaye, Ings. Cull bulls sold to 194.5p/kg and £1540 for a Limousin from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with others at 174.5p/kg and £1516 for a Charolais from HM Hodgson, New Hutton. Over ten buyers were ring side today, competing for all classes and types with over one hundred required at the next sale to fulfil buyers requirements.

What a difference a week makes with a lot more interest in calves at Lancaster, the trade a lot sharper and more buyers ringside looking for all types of calves. A consignment of native calves from RE&P Miller, Barnacre led the way with Aberdeen Angus bulls to £395 and £375. This was matched by the consignment from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling British Blue bulls to £395 and £365 with Aberdeen Angus bull calves from the same home to £380. Rounding off a good day for the Kelsall’s, they topped the heifer section selling British Blue heifers to £280. British Blue bulls sold to £360 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other Blue bulls to £310 from Richard and Claire Barbour, Claughton on Brock. Followed by £200 and £380 for Aberdeen Angus bull calves from W&G Cornthwaite, Claughton on Brock. A pair of Charolais heifers from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale sold to £270 and £265 with plenty of beef calves today selling in the mid two hundreds. Native heifers were met with more demand ring side with Aberdeen Angus to £255 and £240 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons. Black and White bull calves twice sold to £150 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others twice to £100 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons.

The overall market average for the store cattle at Lancaster today was £1313, yes you read that right! More cattle are needed to fulfil buyers requirements with the demand currently high and vendors are urged to sell while the going is good. The £2000 barrier was smashed twice with Limousin bullocks to £2060 and £2020 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead with others from the same good home to £1860. At £1940 was a Limousin bullock from Mrs H Chapman & Son, Middleton. A pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks peaked at £1900 from TC Whiteside
& Son, Pilling. Charolais bullocks topped at £1800 for a pen of three from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. British Blue bullocks sold to £1610 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with an Aberdeen Angus and a Charolais bullock to £1600 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Dairy bullocks sold to £1570 for Montbeliardes and £1540 for Fleckviehs from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse.
The heifer trade peaked at £1610 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with a pen of four British Blue heifers to £1570 from R&DM Rossall & Sons, Pilling. Native heifers peaked at £1450 for a pen of three Herefords from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse.

The cast cow trade continues to go from strength to strength with vendors strongly advised to take advantage of the trade and sell any passengers. There was an overall market average of 182p/kg or an extremely impressive averaged of £1225 per head with Lancaster continuing to be one of the leading markets to sell OTM cattle. An impressive three year old Limousin heifer led the way selling to 274.5p/kg or a top price per head of £1899.54 from MA &JA Winn, Burneside. This was followed by Fleckvieh feeding heifers to 244.5p/kg or £1594 from R Packham & Sons, Docker with young Blonde bulls to 244.5p/kg or £1491. Stock bulls peaked at £1791 for an Aberdeen Angus from JJ&J Woof & Sons, Dent. Beef cows twice sold to 239.5p/kg firstly for a British Blue from GR&A Foy, Conder Green grossing £1501 with a Limousin cow to 239.5p/kg or £1434 from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale. Beef cows sold to a top of £1785 for a Charolais from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon with British Blue peaking at £1639 from AT Rogerson, Chipping. The best dairy cows sold to 211.5p/kg with plenty of well fleshed cows selling regularly over the 200p/kg mark. Dairy cows peaked at £1803 from GR&B Lewis, Middleton with others to £1696 from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal whom sold others to £1590, £1578 and £1543.
