NBA Beef Expo Returns to North West Auctions
For a one-day exhibition showcase of the British Beef Industry, the National Beef Association’s Beef Expo event is heading to J36, Rural Auction Centre, Crooklands on Saturday 27th April 2024.
The event which will support and celebrate the work and commitment of our British Beef producers, has been scheduled to tie in with Great British Beef Week 2024. And, NWA Managing Director, David Pritchard, is delighted to welcome the NBA Beef Expo back to J36, Crooklands. “It is a privilege to be chosen to host it again here at our J36, Rural Auction Centre in 2024 and we are very much looking forward to working with the NBA to make it an event to remember for those who are both exhibiting and attending.”
Beef breeders, farmers, and businesses involved in the industry are expected to gather from all over the UK at this flagship event to celebrate the best of beef cattle breeding, and to share ideas and innovations that will help take Britain’s world class beef industry forward into the future. Beef Expo’s highly competitive show classes will once again showcase some of the UK’s best bloodlines, and a panel of leading experts will address the most important issues facing the industry in an information-packed Seminar Programme.
In returning to Junction 36, Rural Auction Centre, NBA Chief Executive, Neil Shand, is aiming to build on the phenomenal success of the 2022 Beef Expo “Last year’s NBA Beef Expo was the first major beef event since Covid and it demonstrated how popular and important this show and exhibition is to the industry. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Big Items April Online Machinery Sale.
North West Auctions once again had an extremely successful online machinery sale with over 1500 lots again offered for sale. This month saw over 40 tractors and vehicles lined up selling to a top price of £16,100 for a Komatsu Traded Digger with other tractors selling at £4700 for Deutz DX365, a Polaris Sportsman ATV achieved £4600, John Deere Gator at £3900, Mitsubishi L200 at £3100 and a Thwaites Dumper at £2000. Trailers sold to £9500 for a Herbst 19T Low Loader, Ifor Williams 14ft Cattle Trailer at £3600, Ifor Williams 12ft Livestock Trailer at £3000, Ifor Williams Plant Trailer at £2700, 25ft Flat Bed Trailer at £2500.
Seasonal items in very strong demand selling to £3600 for a Lely Mower, £2900 for a 6 row Maize Drill, £2700 Twin Rota Rake, £2500 Kuhn Power Harrow and a Silage Trailer at £2200.
Other items of interest included a Straw Chopper at £5500, 60x45 Steel Building at £5300, Horse Trailer at £2300, PTO Woodchipper at £2000, Bateman Crush at £1950 and a John Deere Ride on Mower at £1250.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: General Sale of Horses, Ponies and Donkeys, Saturday 22nd April 2023.
North West Auctions, once again held a very successful horse sale, with over 200 entered. There were horses for everyone from miniature Shetlands to 17.2hh heavyweight hunters and everything in between.
The sale topped at 5250 gns for an absolutely stunning 4 year old, homebred piebald filly from Mr P Wheeler, standing at 15.2hh and show quality.
Shetlands topped at 850gns for Bodorgan Deva a registered piebald miniature, closely followed by 750gns for Lunespring Martha a black registered Shetland mare from J Richardson, 700gns for Spreyton Lolita a registered miniature and 650 gns for a dun yearling colt from S Allen and a skewbald mini Shetland from J Mitchell.
Other native breeds topped at 2000gns for a very smart palomino Welsh Section D from S Harrison and a Welsh Section C sold at 1800 gns from GW Simpson. Fells topped at 1750gns for Carrock Lockdown Larry from G & R Dunn, with 1250gns being achieved for Rundales Davey’s Lad, a 6 year old gelding from M J Woods.
Sport horse youngsters were headed by a blue roan Clydesdale x from JC Horn at 3500 gns, 3000gns for a tri coloured cob x filly from Solway Sport Horses and a palomino and white filly to make 16.2hh+ from Y Willison made 1300gns.
Other cobs sold at 4300 gns for a smart palomino gelding, Kirkstile Rainbow Warrior from J Donoghue, 2300gns and 2000 for cobs from S BainbridgeCraig and 1850gns for a black, 4 year old filly from G Kenyon. The bigger cobs being in short supply and very easy to sell.
The next sale is an online sale of Riding School ponies due to closure. The sale will go live on Friday 19th May and finish at 12.30pm on Monday 22nd May.

Pigs
The popular end of month sale of pigs saw an alley way full of keen and eager buyers in attendance for all classes and types. Prime pigs sold to a top price of £225 for Pietrain x Saddleback x gilts form P Woof, Stainton, closely followed by M Navesey, Darwen selling pens of Large White x gilts and hoggs upto £222 with others at £205. Lighter weight prime pigs sold to £175 for a Pietrain x hogg from W Stamper, Chipping who also sold gilts at the same price.
An increase in interest in younger pigs with weaners selling to £53 for Large White x Gilts from GJ E Heseltine & Son, Skipton who sold others at £48. Traditional bred weaners sold to £32 for Gloucester Old Spots from J Broatch, Dumfries.
Sheep With Lambs At Foot
What a difference a week makes with spring in the air and a full ring side of buyers forward, ensuring all sheep sold to a fast trade. The first Mule hoggs with lambs of the year were forward, with a pen of ten with Suffolk lambs from RC Wharton & Son, Appleby selling to £202. More onlooks were around the ring keen to purchase replacement sheep, this saw fully vaccinated Mule shearlings with Texel twin lambs from G&KM Atkinson, Colby selling to £268. The same good home sold Texel shearlings with Texel twin lambs to £260. Older Texel ewes saw RT Colbear, Appleby sell his best to £280 with twin lambs. A bigger show of Mule ewes were forward with twins regularly selling at the £220 to £225 mark, topping at £230 from G&KM Atkinson, Colby and JM&NJ Strickland, Whinfell.
More hill ewes and lambs were forward today with plenty of people round the ring looking to purchase these types, aged Cheviots with Texel twin lambs sold to £175 from H Cook, Whitherslack with single Cheviot ewes selling to £128 from RC Wharton & Son, Appleby. 200 outfits are already entered for next weeks sale with plenty of interest from all purchases, please enter with confidence.

70 buyers were present from North Wales, the Midlands, South Scotland, as well as strong attendance from the Northern counties, ensuring a fast trade was seen from start to finish with all cattle selling well above expectations.
An outstanding Limousin heifer from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness sold to the sales top price of £2500. A massive interest was seen for N Cooper & Sons heifers, which were fit to bull with British Blue heifers from this good home selling to £2000. Strong dairy bred British Blue heifers from KG&LM Park, Witherslack topped at £1800 with a full pen from the same home selling to £1760. An outstanding run of home bred cattle from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead saw a pair of Limousin bullocks sell to a top of £1750. A keen interest was seen for all bulling heifers today at Junction 36 with these regularly selling at the £1550-£1700 mark. Yearling bullocks saw a top of £1620 from S Proctor, Selside with the best end yearling bullocks selling at the £1450 to £1580 mark. Yearling grazing bullocks were regularly £980 to £1100, with nice yearling grazing heifers £950 to £1100. All cattle sold averaged £1110, ranging from 6 to 29 months. OTM and Cast Cattle
Another strong entry of 70 cull cows sold to an overall market averaged of 196p/kg, with over half the entry being dairy bred cows. Beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Hereford x from G&ID Postlethwaite with Limousin x selling to 219.5p/kg from D&P Johnson, Dalton in Furness and Bazadaise also achieving 219.5p/kg from MP&CE Buckley, Ings. Medium beef cows were generally 195-210p/kg with most going for further feeding. Heavy weight dairy cows sold to 219.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal. Others were at 207.5p/kg from Messrs Dennison, Ulverston with others regularly achieving 190-205p/kg, parlour types 175-190p/kg with the leanest sorts 155-170p/kg. Top grossing cow today was Holstein Friesian from C Preston, Millom which achieved £1744 with beef cows selling to £1666 from CR Alderson & Son, Kirkby Stephen.
OTM heifers sold to 239p/kg for a British Blue x from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh. It was a Fleckvieh from R&J Dodgson, Natland which topped the sale at £1554.
A large entry of OTM steers saw Limousin x from S&M Cooper, Leece sell at 259.5p/kg and 1663. A consignment of over age Highland steers from the IOM saw a top price of 214.5p/kg with others at 211.5p/kg, 209.5p/kg and regularly achieving 190-205p/kg. Top grossing Highland steer which achieved £1294 with others at £1269 and £1263.

NWA Lancaster is fast becoming the chosen market for buying and selling calves in Lancashire with another increased entry of over 100 forward today, with once again new and returning customers in attendance.
Weaned calves sold to a keen interest with a top price of £565 achieved for a Simmental x bull from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Closely followed by a British Blue x at £560 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel, Hereford x to £555 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel, Charolais x to £550 from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham and Limousin x at £550 from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe. Other stronger bull calves generally selling at £450-£550, depending on breed.
Rearing calves sold to £500 on two occasions for a British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Catterall with others at £490 from Wallbank Farms and £480 from F&JM Kelsall & Son, Bleasdale. Stronger rearing native calves sold to £490 for Aberdeen Angus x from F&JM Kelsall & Son, Bleasdale with others at £480 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Younger rearing calves sold to a keen interest, selling to £395 from RT Halhead, Cockerham who sold others at £370. Hereford x sold to £350 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead and Beef Shorthorns to £295 from JE&S Seedall, Mellor.
Dairy bulls sold to £395 for a well reared British Friesian from JR Newsham, Conder Green who sold others at £365. Reared Holstein Friesian bulls sold to £290 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. The strongest rearing calves sold to £195 from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with others at £190 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Mediums sold to £92 from M&E Fawcett & Son, Longridge and the smallest
sorts £30-£60.
Heifer calves sold to £585 for a ring full of weaned Aberdeen Angus x from I Richardson, Catforth with Hereford x selling to £500 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £465. The strongest rearing calves sold to £395 for a Charolais x from WG Farms, Cockerham who sold British Blue x at £390. Other British Blue x achieved £360 and £340 from JP&C Robson, Catterall. Younger rearing heifers sold to £310 from RT Halhead, Cockerham with Charolais x selling to £285 from JE&S Seedall, Mellor with other heifer calves generally £195-£250 depending on breed and quality.

The weekly sale of store cattle saw 220 through the ring, with trade even hotter than previous weeks. A pair of Hereford steers topped the leader board today from KG&LM Park, Grange Over Sands at £1950. Not far behind was local supporter K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel which saw his run of run of twenty well farmed British Blue steers to £1900. Aberdeen Angus today saw H Chapman, Middleton to £1850, with other Angus steers to £1800 from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling . Charolais steers sold to £1780 from J&M Cockett, Ingleton. Dairy bred steers today saw Friesians to £1600 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Yearling steers today saw Limousin from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine to £1400. All steers today averaged a whopping £1350.
K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel continued their tremendous day with British Blue heifer at £1740 and £1700. AE Atkinson, Kendal saw their good run of Limousin cattle top at £1660 for 21 month olds. Angus heifers are always easy to sell at Lancaster, with L Parson & Sons, Levens to £1600 for 21 month olds. All heifers today averaged £1200.

Farmer Stirks & Young Feeding Bulls
The monthly sale of stirks saw just over a hundred through the main ring, following stores with an animated trade from start to finished. W Salisbury, Treales took the headlines with a pair of 10 month old Limousin bullocks at £1520, with others from the same good home at £1320. Other notable bull stirks saw R Eshborn, Glasson Dock with a pen full of 12 month old Limousin bulls at £1140, with others at £1000. British Blue bulls saw 8 month olds from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe to £900 for a pair.
12 month old turning out steers saw the best trade of the day, with WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby selling a pair of Aberdeen Angus steers to £890. Other yearling steers saw Hereford from P Rossall, Scorton to £840. Also making £840 was D&J Hay, Cockerham this time for a British Blue steer, they continued their good day with 9 month old British Blue heifers to £800 for a pen of five. Other British Blue heifers today saw JP&C Robson, Garstang to £840. A trio of Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £800 from WJ&EA Woodhouse, Nateby.
6-8 month old stirks were a real trade, with plenty of customers round the ring for this age of cattle. J&CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore sold a pair of 7 month old British Blue steers to £700. B&MJ Nelson & Son,
Milnthorpe saw his 6 month old Limousin steers to £730, with 4 month old Limousin steers from the same home at £620.

Heavy well fleshed cows were regularly selling at 215-230p/kg. Holstein Friesian sold to 229.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe with others at 221p/kg from J Bargh & son Morecambe and 217p/kg from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Top grossing cow was a Simmental from Barlow Bros, Croston at £2019, with a trio of Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe all selling between £1640-£1675. All cull cows averaged £1230.
