Ring 1 - Breeding Sheep

Hill Bred Females

The closing Autumn sale of breeding sheep commenced with hill bred females, leading the way was a single pedigree Cheviot shearling achieving £340 from Spring Bank Farms. Other pens of Cheviot shearlings sold to £260 from KO Stones, North Yorkshire. Herdwick ewes would be the trade of the day with a pair selling to £118 from RA Lancaster, Torver and another pair of shearlings selling to £112 from K Little & D McClure, Cartmel. Other pens of shearlings sold to £108 from JG Harryman, Hawkshead with Herdwick draft ewes regularly selling away in the seventy-to-eighty-pound mark. Rough Fell shearlings sold to a top of £135 from VR Guy, Tebay with ewes to a top of £92 from NC&S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen. A strong trade was seen for all Swaledale ewes with a top of £150 from Forest Hall Farms, Selside with big pens from Braestead Farms, Patterdale topping at £132. All hill bred gimmer lambs were eagerly bid for with Rough Fells selling to £100 from AEA Harrison, Kentmere with others to £70 from VR Guy, Tebay. Cheviot gimmer lambs sold to £85 from Braestead Farms, Patterdale with the smaller end of gimmer lambs selling around the sixty pound mark. Swaledale gimmer lambs sold to £68 from RA Lancaster, Torver, with many Swaledales getting away around the sixty pound mark. Herdwick gimmer lambs sold to £65 from R&A Ellwood, Foxfield with others to £60 from K Little & D McClure, Cartmel.

Gimmer Lambs

A variety of gimmer lambs were forward at the sale with something to suit all requirements. North Country Mule gimmer lambs sold to £98 from WJ&I France & Son, Chipping, with others selling at £96 from D Sexton, Ulverston and £90 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Other notable prices included Grade Two Dutch Spotted gimmer lambs achieving £400 from KD Dagger, Catterall who sold Grade Three gimmer lambs at £320. Pure Texels sold to £160 from K Little & D McClure, Cartmel. Suffolk x sold to £96 from S Hartley, Tebay. Welsh Speckled Mules sold to £92 from Messrs Boyes, Whitehaven with Texel x selling to £95 from A&L Huddleston, Wray.

Ewes & Shearlings

All breeds and types of ewes and shearlings were easily sold to a ring side of purchasers keen to secure additional and replacement stock. Mule shearlings sold to a top of £200 with others at £185 from L G Sibson, Keswick with other Mule shearlings generally achieving £130-£150. Mule ewes sold to £160 for one crops from DA&FB Daley,

Over Sands with two crops selling to £112 from GG&MA Long, Pennington who also sold three and four crop ewes at £98. Texel x shearlings sold to £198 from RG&L Potter, Tebay with others at £120 to £150. Older Continental ewes sold to £110 for two crop Texel x from K Purtill, Wigan. Cheviot Mule shearlings sold to £140 from J James, Ingleton with other Cheviot x selling at £110 to £120. Lleyn shearlings sold to £155 from A&AC Whittle, Kirkby in Furness.

Ring 2 - Breeding Rams

North West Auctions held their Annual Show and Sale of Swaledale Breeding Rams, with judging in the capable hands of Mr S Wainright, Derbyshire who we thank for his time and expertise. Winning the overall Championship was KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with a much admired powerful shearling sired by a Bull and Cave tup, this went on to sell for a top price of £600. The Reserve Championship was awarded to Elliot Bros, Murton with a four shear tup bred out of a Daltons selling to £550. Other leading prices saw Swaledale shearlings to £520 from RA Clegg & LD Bennett, Seathwaite with other Swaledale tup shearlings to £480 from J Handley, Chapple-le-Dale. All Swaledale shearling tups forward averaged £311. Other leading prices for aged tups was £400 and £350 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay with all aged Swaledale tups averaging £350.

The Show and Sale of Cheviot Breeding Rams continues to go from strength to strength at NWA J36. A powerful line up of tups for the pre sale show saw the Championship rosette awarded to the first prize shearling from KO Stones, Marrick. This tup went on to sell for the top price of £600. The reserve champion was awarded to the first prized aged tup from JE&SM Seedall, Blackburn selling to £450. Other leading priced saw the second prize Cheviot shearling, selling to £550 from Spring Bank Farm.

Powerful correct Leicester tups met plenty of trade. Leading the way was a consignment from G&K Richmond, Preston selling tup lambs to £480 and £450. Leicester two shears peaked at £450 with shearlings to the same price from Caitlin and Alex Long, Ulverston. Other leading prices saw shearling tups to £450 from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh with others to £420 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. Terminal sire breeding rams saw good quality breeding rams in plenty of demand and eagerly bid for. Leading the way was a consignment from Lucus & Nairey, Blackburn selling Texels to £800 and £580 three times. Suffolk tup shearlings peaked at £700 from SC Walker, Rushton with other leading prices for Texel shearling tups, £620 from G Wilson, Carnforth, £600 from S&A Bland, Tebay, £600 from D Wilkinson, Tebay, £600 from Sue Cunliffe, Field Broughton and £600 from AJ&LJ Haston, Maryport. Ram lambs peaked at £480 for Suffolks from SC Walker.

North West Auctions Lancaster were proud to hold the annual show of young handlers prime lambs. Thank you goes to our judge Janet Simpson who we thank for her time and expertise and a special mention goes to our sale sponsor Country Style Meats. It was great to welcome all the young handlers into the market today, who we praise for putting on a good show. It was wonderful to see so many young keen people in the industry. The first prize upland lamb was awarded to Adam Ayrton, Over Wyresdale selling his 46kg Mule to £101. First prize lowland lamb was awarded to Henry Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe selling his first prize 54kg Texel lamb to £140. The champion young handler was award to Isla Billington, Claughton on Brock who topped the sale today selling her 57kg Texel lamb to £155 purchased by Neil Lomax. A big thank you goes to all involved. The weekly sale of prime lamb had an entry of 755 forward selling to a slightly shaper trade. The trade peaked at

£142 for a heavy weight Leicester from Caitlin and Alex Long, Ulverston. Heavy weight lambs continue to be well bid for at Lancaster selling to £138 and £133 from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock. Handy weighted lambs were a sharper trade with better types regularly selling between 250-270p/kg. Upland lambs saw heavy weights in plenty of demand, heavy weight Mules sold to £117 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. This was followed by Mashams to £116 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Mules from the same home to £115.

A sharper trade in the cast sheep ring for all types of sheep which saw an increased number of 170 forward this week. The consignment of Texel x ewes from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof led the way selling to £140 and £138. Other Texel x ewes sold to £132 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. The consignment from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton sold Charollais to £132 and Cheviot Mules to £126. Plenty of strong ewes sold around the £120 mark. Big Mule ewes sold to £109 from CJ Metcalfe with others to £108 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale with pens of strong Mule ewes around the £100 mark.

The fortnightly sale of store lambs enjoyed a buoyant trade with the consignment of Beltex lambs from PD Pye, Over Wyresdale selling to £90 and £84. Texel lambs sold to £82 and £78 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton with other Texel lambs to £81 and £78 from J Gardner, Bay Horse. All store lambs forward averaged £76.07.

Pigs

North West Auctions conducted its fortnightly sale of pigs which saw buyers in attendance looking for all classes and types. Prime pigs sold to a new market record of £245 for a Pietrain x Saddleback Gilt from J Stott, Kingsland who sold others at £205. Other heavy well finished prime pigs attracted the keenest interest with Pietrain x gilts selling to £178 and £155 from J Calvert, Carlisle with Large Black gilts from H Kent, Cockerham selling at £155 and £150. A pair of smart Pietrain x hoggs from Wendy Stamper, Chipping achieved £145. Top pence per kilogram this sale was 233p/kg achieved by Mr J Stott, Kingsland with all prime pigs forward averaging 144p/kg. Cull sows sold to £140 and 78p/kg from R Nettleton, Penrith who sold others at £135 and £120. A small entry of store and weaner pigs sold to £19 for Large White x gilts from R Nettleton, with others selling at £15 and £10.

Prime Lambs

A bumper entry of 2066 prime lambs were forward today which saw all weights and specifications of lambs bid for eagerly by a busy ring of buyers. Once again heavy weight lambs continue to be eagerly bid for with Texels peaking at £137 from F&CE Bentley & Son, Shap and others to £136.50 from RA Gibons, Flookburgh. Followed by £135 twice for Texels from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and £135 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Plenty more heavy weight Texel lambs sold in the one hundred and thirty pound region. Heavy weight Charollais lambs peaked at £136 from RR&J Knowles, Docker. Heavy weight Mules peaked £120 from Low Moor Howe, Windermere with other Mules to £114 from D Wightman & A Mason, Burton. Handy weighted lambs were a sharper trade with better bred handy weighted lambs regularly selling in excess of the 250p/kg mark and the best types selling in the region of 300p/kg. The annual young handlers show of prime lambs at J36 was once again very well supported and it was great to see so many keen, enthusiastic young farmers in the market expertly showing their lambs. The Cornthwaite Group Shield for the Champion prime lamb was awarded to Johnathan Winn, Burneside with his 48kg lamb going on to sell for £170 purchased by Jimmy Blenkhorn on behalf of Lancashire Halal Direct. A few less numbers in the cast sheep ring today with trade being a little bit sharper than last week, which many more could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage. Beltex ewes sold to a top of £151 from PD&PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal with Texels selling to £136 from Connor Boyren, Colton with the best Continental bred selling at the £125-£130 mark. Mule ewes topped at £110 twice from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton and R Cowin & Sons, Manriggs. Medium type Mule ewes were regularly selling at the £85-£90 mark. Lonk ewes sold to £110 from JJ&D Huddleston, Caton with Swaledales selling to a sharper trade topping at £73 from Messrs Kiplin, Greenholme with medium type Swaledale regularly selling at £45-£55. A good show of Rough Fell ewes forward sold to £82 from AJ&JL Sansom, Windermere.

Calves & Stirks

90 calves forward today with strong well grown calves continuing to sell to a fast and competitive trade. Younger calves sold to less demand with the ever increasing cost of milk powder and feed. British Blue bulls sold to a top of £455 from J&S Brakewell, Ulverston with other British Blue bulls to £435 twice from J Hornby & Son, Ulverston and W&S Airey, Carnforth. 21 British Blue bulls forward averaged £345. Limousin bulls sold to £430 from J Hornby & Son, Ulverston with others from the same good home selling to £420. Continental bulls were regularly selling between the £300-£350 mark, heifers peaked at £375 for British Blues from J Hornby & Son, Ulverston other sold to £355 from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck. Many purchases were looking to purchase heifers for breeding.

A small show of stirks forward saw Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £600 from JM Simpson, Underbarrow with a pen of five month old bullocks from Messrs Young, Lindale selling to £540.

Store Cattle

A seasonal entry of store cattle were forward at todays sale with many now starting to show the effect of the recent weather changes. Well grown cattle having been fed at the trough continue to sell to a premium. The top price today was £1380 achieved for an 18 month old Limousin x steer from Messrs Parker, Mewith. Other Continental steers sold to £1290 from A Handley, Heversham with Limousin x achieving £1245 from JE&WB Wearing, Millom with another British Blue x at £1200 from S&M Cooper, Leece. Younger steers sold to £1100 for a 13 month old Charolais x from AW Irvine, Windermere with others achieving £1025 from JC Walling & Son, Lyth. Native sired steers sold to £1290 for a Hereford x from JE Wightman, Lupton who also sold Aberdeen Angus at £1265. Younger native sired steers sold to £1125 for an Aberdeen Angus x from PW&D Swindlehurst, Underbarrow with Hereford x achieving £965 from DJ&S Stainton, Howgill. Store heifers sold to £1280 for a Limousin from T Metcalfe, Sedbergh with British Blues and Limousins selling to £1195 from JE&WB Wearing, Millom. 82 cull cows were forward achieving an overall market average of 161p/kg with over half the entry being dairy cows. Beef cows sold to a top of 209.5p/kg for a Limousin from S Whitehead, Middleton with others at 201.5p/kg from TW Gorst, Crook and £194.5p/kg from M Gibson, Sedbergh. Heavy Aberdeen Angus cows from RG Robinson, Farleton sold to 197.5p/kg with other heavy weight cows to 184.5p/kg from RJ&J Gardner, Natland. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 171.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal and a British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows generally around 145165p/kg with medium types 125-145p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing today was an Aberdeen Angus from RG Robinson, Farleton achieving £1645 closely followed by a Limousin x from S Whitehead, Sedbergh achieving £1627 and a Charolais x from AW Irvine, Windermere at £1599. Top price dairy was a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg, Kendal at £1466.

OTM heifers sold to 191.5p/kg and £1237 for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal.

OTM steers saw an Aberdeen Angus x from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton to 209.5p/kg and £1248.

A single cull bull today being a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from JF Batty & Son, Coniston sold at 167.5p/kg and £1835.

A special section for cull cows from TB1 holdings saw dairy cows selling to 159.5p/kg and £1253 from R&J Dodgson, Natland with others at 149.5p/kg and £1036 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick.

Following on from ministry inspections, vendors must ensure that all animals are correctly tagged, otherwise may face ministry on farms inspections. All paperwork must be fully completed (including TB status and test dates), cattle with incomplete paperwork will be sold at the end of the sale.

The weekly sale of calves and the monthly sale of stirks had an entry of just shy of 200, the monthly sale of stirks enjoyed a stronger trade than anticipated, greeted with a busy ring side of buyers. The sale peaked at £970 for a nine month old Limousin steer from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel with Hereford bullocks from the same home to £860 and £740. This same good home also sold British Blues to £760. Beef Shorthorn bullocks peaked at £900 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. This was followed by nine month old Limousin bullocks from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool. Eight month old British Blue bullocks sold to £810 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme followed by ten month old British Blue bullocks to £795 from Barker Farms, Cockerham. Barker Farms topped the heifer trade selling to £650 for British Blues. Native heifers met more demand ring side today. The calf trade remains very similar, a run of weanlings from EW&R Towers, Hornby sold Fleckviehs to £425 and £400 twice. This was followed by a Beef Shorthorn weanling to £390 from Messrs Jones, Cockerham. Hereford bull calves sold to £340 and £315 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Limousin bull calves sold to £300 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. There was plenty of calves selling between £150 and £200.

The weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster Auction saw strong short term store cattle in big demand and a strong trade. The consignment from R Townsend, Freckleton led the way selling Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1780 and £1760, with Limousin bullocks from the same good home to £1640 and £1620. This was followed by the consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse selling Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1700, with a pen of four to £1500 and a pen of four British Blues to £1560. Limousins from the same home sold to £1440. A couple of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from L Parsons & Son, Levens sold to £1440. British Blue bullocks sold to £1440 and £1420 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. Other leading prices saw a pen of Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1430 from J Tattersall, Leyland with the consignment form J Hesketh, Hutton peaking at £1430 for an Aberdeen Angus bullock. Also achieving the £1400 mark was a pair of Limousin bullocks from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer, who sold a couple of Welsh Black heifers to £1360. The heifer trade peaked at £1410 for a Beef Shorthorn from EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. Black and White heifers peaked at £1400 from ST Pye, Great Eccleston. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1380 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Plenty of strong cattle sold in excess of the £1300 mark.

The trade for OTM cattle and cast cows remains very similar with an overall market average of 163p/kg for 103 head forward. The market topped at £2220 for a quality Limousin bull from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. This was followed by £1930 for a pure six year old Limousin cow who sold for 229.5p/kg from JM&JA Dawson, Littledale. Two year old Charolais steers sold to 249.5p/kg or £1684 from H Whiteside, Pilling. Aberdeen Angus bullocks from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine sold to 224.5p/kg or £1560 and 214.5p/kg or £1383, with other Aberdeen Angus bullocks from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse selling to 219.5p/kg or £1649. Young Limousin cows sold to 204.5p/kg or £1441 from TS&HJ Park, Cowin Bridge with plenty of good fleshed beef cows between 190200p/kg. Dairy cattle saw black and white feeding heifers sell to 204.5p/kg or £1247 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. Fleckvieh dairy cows sold to 194.5p/kg twice grossing £1497 and £1332 from B&AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale. Friesian cows sold to 191.5p/kg or £1501 from TL Baldwin & Son, Forton with others from the same home to £1442. Well fleshed dairy cows regularly sold at 180-190p/kg.
