Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Monday 26th June 2023.

Prime Lambs

A super entry of 700 lambs were forward with all eagerly bid for. Peaking at £163 for a pair of Beltex lambs from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale who sold other Beltex lambs at £162. With Texel lambs selling to £160 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby, other pens of Texel lambs selling to £159 from JS Horner, Ingleton. With heavy well-bred continental lambs regularly £135-£140. A larger number of lighter lambs forward with all these selling well, with the best end of these regularly selling 320p/kg-330p/kg with more commercial types selling 300-310p/kg. The best pens of lambs regularly selling 340p/kg-350p/kg topping at 362p/kg for a Texel from KA Purtill, Wigan with other to 356p/kg from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby.

Prime Hoggs

Hoggs with meat meeting plenty of interest with Texel hoggs selling to £144 from JM & MH France, Littledale who sold other pens to £140. Full pen of Mules hoggs from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh sold to £132. With hoggs with meat regularly selling 250p/kg-260 p/kg.

Cast Sheep

230 cast ewes forward all selling to competitive trade here at Lancaster Market. Heavy/over fit ewes would be a shade easier on the week. Beltex ewes saw a top of £145 twice from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. With Texel ewes at £144 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Plenty of continental bred ewes regularly £130-£135 mark. Mule ewes saw a top of £115 from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock with the best regularly selling around the £110 mark with medium types £90-£100. Hill ewes saw Cheviot sell to £99 for a full pen from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 27th June 2023.

Pigs

Well finished pigs continue to sell to a premium with a top price of £228 for a pair of heavy weight gilts from Mrs Wendy Stamper, Chipping who medium weights at £172 and £162. A pair of tremendous light weight gilts (72kg) from BR Harrison, Staveley sold at £188, with others at £172. Medium weight pigs generally £130 to £150 depending on quality and type. Buyers as always showing caution toward boars and under finished pigs.

Top pence per kilogram was 261p/kg achieved for light weights from BR Harrison, Staveley with mediums selling to £191 and heavy’s £163 from W Stamper, Chipping.

Cull sows sold to £90 and 41p/kg for a Large White x from M Allen, Carnforth.

An exceptional interest in weaners and stores, with six week sold Large White x from Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness selling at £39. Tamworth x store gilts sold to £80 from R Dick, Greenhaulgh who sold boars at £66.

The next sale of pigs in on Tuesday 11th July. Buyers are encouraged to pre enter pigs to assist in the canvassing of buyers, over half the entry of pigs today were unentered.

Prime Lambs

Another increased number of 1245 lambs forward, a head of farmers looking to wean lambs over the coming weeks. Well finished lambs having benefited from hard feed attracted the keenest attention, lighter weights and under finished a more cautious trade with buyers looking to secure lambs within order specifications. 25% of todays sale were lamb weighing 34kg and below.

Super heavy lambs from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland sold to a top of £173 for Texels with a pen of four Texels from the same home selling to £162. C&J Bennett, St Michaels sold pens of pure Texel lambs to £160. Heavy lambs weighing 48kg to 55kg averaged 272p/kg. Smart bred lambs continue to sell well at Junction 36 with these regularly selling over the 300p/kg mark.

Prime Hoggs

Very much an end off season sale for hoggs saw a top price of £137 for Texel x from SF Herring, Millom with others at £134 from I&G Sedgwick, Burton in Lonsdale and £131 for Texel x from M&S Blease, Carnfoth. Other well finished hoggs were generally £100 to £120. Top pence per kilo of 258p/kg for a Texel x from M Allen, Carnforth with an overall prime hogg average of 209p/kg.

From next week any hoggs will be sold within the cull sheep section.

Cast Sheep

Another large entry of just short of 500 local farmers ewe were forward today with a predominately leaner show. The sale topped at £164 for Suffolk x from H Newton, Levens with other larger framed ewes generally £120 to £135. Buyers were showing extreme caution towards over fat ewes and those still in their wool. Medium ewes attracted the keenest attention selling to £120 for Cheviot x from KA Purtill, Wigan and Suffolk x from I&G Sedgwick, Burton in Lonsdale. Others were £105 to £120 to include Mules at £109 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Hill ewes sold to £99 for Cheviots from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh. The large entry of predominately leaner hill ewes saw the larger framed sorts sell from £55 to £65, mediums £45 to £55 and the leanest and smallest at realisation.

No headline rams today, Continentals sold to £148 with others generally £130 to £135. Mediums £90 to £110 with smaller hill bred rams at £60 to £80.

On Farm Dispersal Sale: P & M Asbury Farm Sale, Thursday 29th June 2023

On the Thursday 29th June North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting an evening dispersal sale of farm machinery and equipment on behalf of Mrs M Asbury, Gilberton Farm, Abbeystead.

This sale of well maintained modern farm machinery equipment attracted a keen crowd of buyers with several travelling many hours to attend. The sale topped at £23,800 for a Deutz Fahr Agri 100 4wd tractor complete with loader having done 997 hours since new. A Honda 500 ATV sold at £4200 with other items of interest including IFor Williams Plant Trailer at £2600, Towable Power Shredder to £2500 and a Towable ATV Sprayer to £820. Livestock equipment comprising of predominately modern sheep related items which saw a Volac Automatic Lamb Feeder sell at £1020, IAE Lamb Weigh Scales to £420, 3 in 1 Feeders to £400, IAE Lamb Creeper to £360, Solway Sheep Pens to £250, 8 6ft Hurdles to £195 and Sheep Hayracks to £100.

North West Auctions held its popular weekly sale which saw customers in attendance from coast to coast. Vendors taken advantage been able to do all their selling on one day. Store Cattle sell to £1760

Keen interest from 9 active buyers at the fortnightly sale of dairy cattle saw top price of £1800 for a fresh 3rd calved cow from R & K Jenkinson, Pilling for sold others at £1750 & £1680. Buyers eager to secure dairy cattle with plenty of milk with lighted weight cows and heifers generally £1500-£1650.

Calves & Weanlings

Quality and quantity again present at the popular weekly sale of rearing and weaned calves with new customers in attendance. Bull calves sold to £580 for a 1 month 8 day old Charolais bull calf from Fell Foot Farm, Penrith closely followed by British Blue x bulls from JP & C Robson, Garstang selling at £570. Other stronger bull calves sold to £540 for an Aberdeen Angus x from W & G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock and British Blue x at £520 from J Hoggarth & Sons, Slyne. Younger rearing calves sold to £360 for Limousin x from D & K Howarth, Hambleton and Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £350 from JE & S Seedall, Mellor and £340 from J & M Coar & Son, Waddington. Dairy bulls sold to £155 for 10 days old Montbeliarde from Colby Farms Ltd, Appleby.

Heifer calves sold to £430 for a 7 week old British Blue x from J Hoggarth & Sons, Slyne with others at £350 from JP & C Robson, Garstang. Younger rearing heifers sold to £250 for a Charolais x from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham. With Aberdeen Angus selling to £220 from JE & S Seedall, Mellor. The youngest generally £160-£200.

Several pens of weaned calves saw 4 month old Aberdeen Angus x bulls sell to £520 from JK & BJ Birkett, Morecambe who sold others at £500 and £480. 12 week old Blonde x sold to £430 from J Knipe, Kendal.

Store Cattle & Stirks

Store Cattle continue to sell to the recent high rates despite the reports of downward pressure on the prime market. Steers sold to a top price of £1760 for a Charolais x from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham closely followed by Aberdeen Angus x from JGT & V Parkinson, Preesall selling at £1700 with others at £1670 from L Parsons & Son, Levens. Other strong steers regularly £1500-£1600. Dairy bred steers sold to £1480 for a Holstein Friesian from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham who sold others at £1460. Younger steers suitable for grazing and further feeding sold to £1240 for a 14 month old Limousin x from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £1170 from G Metcalfe & Son, Gressingham.

Heifers sold to a top price of £1550 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JA Carr, Heskin with others at £1480 from T Robson & Son, Singleton, and B & J Preston, Caton. Other pens of stronger heifers regularly £1280-£1400.

Younger heifers for summer grazing sold to £1100 for a Limousin x from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. The monthly sale of young stores and farmers stirks sold to an exceptionally high trade with all vendors leaving suited with prices achieved. Steers sold to £1130 for a pen of 10 month old Aberdeen Angus X steers from G & D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston. With other Aberdeen Angus x steers selling to £970 for 11 month olds from JW Thwaites, Tebay and £920 from R & J Parkinson, Preesall. Younger well reared steers sold to £900 for a British Blue x from D & J Hay, Cockerham with 8 month old Limousin x achieving £890 from B & MJ Nelson & Son, Milnthorpe. Younger steers (6-8months old) generally £620-£750.

Heifer stirks sold to £1050 for a Aberdeen Angus x from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine with Limousin x selling to £980 from PD Pye, Abbeystead and Aberdeen Angus x to £880 from JW Thwaites, Tebay. 8/10 months old Charolais heifers from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe sold at £860. Younger heifers (5-8months old) generally £580-£700.

Keen interest in breeding bulls saw 8 month old British Blue x from PF Lee, Lancaster achieving £890 with others at £850. Recently weaned Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £560 from JK & BJ Birkett & Son, Morecambe.

Lancaster Auction proves to be the place to sell cull cows, with an overall market average of 188p/kg and £1199 with over 80% being dairy cows. Sale peaked at 239.5p/kg for a Limousin x from AE Atkinson, Endmoor. With British Blue x to 229.5p/kg from GR & A Foy, Conder Green with Limousin x also achieving 229.5 from MA & JA Winn, Burneside. Beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly 195p/kg-210p/kg depending on breed and quality. Dairy cows sold to top of 219.5p/kg for a British Friesian from SH & M Batty & Son, Quernmore with other at 214.5p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham, with Fleckvieh at 209.5p/kg from B & AC Barnes, Kirkby

Lonsdale. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows generally 190p/kg-205p/kg with medium 175p/kg-185p/kg with the leanest 145p/kg-165p/kg. Top grossing Beef Cow was British Blue x from GR & A Foy, Conder Green to £1792 with Dairy Cows selling to £1655 from WN & D Smith, Cockerham closely followed by other at £1653 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe.
