J36 Rural Auction Centre: Online Reduction Sale of the Drybarrows and Bracklinn Studs. Drybarrows and Bracklinn Studs attract International Attention at the Online Sale.

North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting an online auction sale of registered Fell ponies on behalf of the Drybarrows stud of David Thompson, Bampton, Penrith and the Bracklinn Stud on behalf of Alistair Smith, Dunblane. This much anticipated sale attracted international interest with successful purchases going as far afield as Germany and America and all over the United Kingdom. This sale attracted over 150 active bidders and over 25 successful purchasers which included nine ponies finding new homes abroad.
Stealing the headlines at £5,500 was the much-admired Drybarrows Harmony, a black filly foal, this sweet foal with lovely temperament and conformation is sired by Bluecap Gilbert and dam is Drybarrows Distinction, which finds a new home in a South Cumbrian stable with Ms Colquhoun. This was followed by £4,900 for Drybarrows Hallmark, this June born black colt foal caught the eye of many on the open day with show and stallion potential. This colt was once again sired by Bluecap Gilbert selling into the south of England to Ms Fouch. Foals then sold to £3,700 for Drybarrows Havana whom was sired by Drybarrows Dynamic. This very special filly foal whom was full of quality found a new home over the water selling to an American buyer Ms Snar. Drybarrows Hot Stepper, a show quality black filly foal sold to £3,500 full of potential and sired by Drybarrows Bowie, selling to Riverwind Stables in South Carolina, America.
Foals from the Bracklinn Stud topped at £3700 with a black filly, Bracklinn Violet. This foal sired by Carrock I’m Yer Man out of Bracklinn Alice was also sold into South Carolina, America to Riverwind Stables. Colt foals from the same home sold to £2,700 with Bracklinn Hotshot whom was a son of the renowned Bracklinn Jackpot.

The sale also included a selection of yearlings upwards with these peaking at £4,300 for a 3-year-old black filly, Drybarrows Edelwiss, sired by Drybarrows Bowie with its mother being Holling Tara. With great broodmare potential, heading to Germany to Ms Wohlfarth. The much admired, yearling colt Drybarrows Guardian, who is one of the last opportunities to purchase offspring of the renowned Bracklinn Jackpot sold for a final bid of £2,900.

A grey yearling filly from the Bracklinn Stud saw Bracklinn Clemmie achieved £3,400, this lovely moving filly, sired by Carrock I’m Yer Man sold to the Riverwind Stables.
All foals forward in the sale averaged £2,412.22. Yearlings and older ponies averaged £2,418. North West Auctions would like to thank all the bidders for their support in this sale and wish the purchasers good luck with their new ponies.
J36 Rural Auction Centre: Draft Ewe Day, Friday 23rd September 2022.

North West Auction’s Annual Draft Ewe Sale of Swaledales, Rough Fells, Cheviots, Herdwicks and Other Hill Going Breeds, saw a record catalogued entry of 5600. The sale created much interest with interest from throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Swaledales


The largest entry of Swaledales seen at J36 saw good quality sheep trade sell to a similar trade as last year with some runs of best quality sheep averaging more then the previous year. Second quality sheep selling to less money this year as to be expected, keeping in line with breeding sheep trends.
The pre-sale show was kindly sponsored by Carrs Billington and the Lake District National Park. A special mention goes to our pre-sale judges Christopher Ryder, Blubberhouses and Martin Cragg, Sedbergh who we thank for their time and expertise. A wonderful line up were forward for our judges to cast their eye over, saw the Champion rosette and the Farming in the North Trophy awarded to E & A Wear, Hartsop for the nineth year in a row with his winning pen of 1 and 2 crop Swaledale ewes. They saw eager bidding ringside, selling to a top price of the day of £390. This much-admired run of sheep sold two crop ewes to £220, £220 and £190. One crops from the same home to £175 and shearlings to the same price. The second prize pen of one and two crop ewes was awarded to R & A Taylforth, Patterdale which went on to sell to £190.
The first prized pen of Swaledale gimmer shearlings was awarded to Antony Hartley, Broughton in Furness which went on to sell for £320 with others from the same home selling to £230. The second and third prize rosette gimmer shearlings were awarded to debutant at J36, N Richardson, Buxton selling to £290 and £170. The first prized pen of three crop ewes and upwards was awarded to Thomas and Helen Drinkall, Oakenclough with a powerful pen of sheep selling £200. The first pen of gimmer lambs was awarded to R Marwood & Son, Richmond selling to £110 whom enjoyed a successful day with the consignment selling ewes to £280 and gimmer shearlings to £280.
Other leading prices saw a pen of gimmer shearlings from JA Alderson, Barras sell to £240. This was followed by other pens of gimmer shearlings selling to £195 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale and £190 from MP & A Capstick, Kirkby Stephen. There were plenty of pens of good quality sheep sold in excess of the one-hundred-andfifty-pound mark. All Swaledale ewes forward sold to an overall market average of £118.74. Gimmer shearlings sold to an overall market average of £127.
Rough Fell
The annual show and sale of Rough Fell breeding females on behalf of the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders Association, was met with a fierce trade from start to finish. All vendors leaving with a smile on their face.
The pre-sale show was in the capable hands of Mr John Capstick, Sedbergh and we thank him for his time and expertise. The North Sheep Trophy for the Champion pen of Rough Fells was awarded to VR Guy, Tebay which went on to sell for £180. The Edmund Capstick Trophy for the best pen of 10 Shearlings was awarded to VR Guy also, going on to sell for £115.
In general, Rough Fell draft ewes showing strength and power were regularly selling £125 - £135, with pens outside the show selling to £160 twice from NC & S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen. 314 ewes averaged £116.09 up £17.58 on the year.
Shearlings would be the trade of the day with many new customers forward looking to purchase young replacement stock. Selling to a top of £152 from P & S Hoggarth, Howgill. Other nice pens sold to £150 from NC & S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen. All shearlings forward averaged an impressive £124.94 up £22.82 on the year.
Gimmer lambs saw keen interest from purchasers with a top of £90 from J Hunter, Tebay with the first prize pen of 10 from A EA Harrison, Kentmere selling to £88.
Herdwick
Herdwick ewes sold to £105 from G & SM Stephenson, Ravenstonedale with others achieving £100 from J Willis, Grayrigg. Shearlings sold to £90 from J Willis, Grayrigg who also sold gimmer lambs at £42.
Cheviots
There was keen interest in Cheviots which saw shearlings sell to £170 and £168 from J Allonby, Grayrigg. Others sold to £138 from JW & SE Drinkwater and KM & KJ Curwen. Older ewes sold to £150 from KM & KJ Curwen who sold others at £132. Gimmer lambs sold to £92 from HE & MJ Henderson with others at £70.

A consignment of Welsh Hill Speckled Faced ewes from JE Handley sold at £92, with gimmer lambs selling to £118.

Lancaster saw an increased entry of 1005 prime lambs forward today, with the market trend remaining similar. Good confirmation, well finished and heavy weight lambs continue to be eagerly bid for by our busy active ring of nine buyers with leaner lambs penalised.
The market peaked at £157 for a heavy weight Suffolks from RC Billington & Son, Claughton on Brock whom sold Texel to £148, £146 and £134. Texel peaked at £148 from J&L Howard, Cockerham with Suffolks from the same home to £144 and £140. Heavy weight Texel from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale sold to £146, £140 and £134. Other leading prices for heavy weight lambs saw Texels to £144 from David Hough, Dolphinholme with Continentals to £136 from JET&AEA Hull, Winmarleigh. Shapier 50kg Texels sold to £132 from B&SE Carter, Ellel followed by £130 from J Pinder & Sons, Clitheroe. Plenty more pens of lambs regularly sold in the one twenties for lambs with weight and well finished, this speciation of lambs averaging 242p/kg. Best confirmation lambs sold to 291p/kg for Texels from JR&LA Capstick, Killington followed by Dutch Spotties to 291p/kg from AD&EJ Leak, Conder Green. Better confirmation lambs sold in excess of 270p/kg. There was a larger quantity of hill lambs forward today which saw 51kg Mules to £114 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with 50kg Mules to £110 from T&H Drinkall, Oakenclough. Plenty of Continental ewes sold in the region of one hundred and twenty pounds. Heavy weight Mules sold to £109 from Pilling Hall, Pilling with other strong Mule ewes around the £100 mark. There was a large quantity of goats on the market selling to £98 from M&L Cooper, Preesall.

Prime pigs sell to £205 at NWA J36.

Another super entry of prime pigs were once again a pleasure to sell with buyers in attendance keen to secure prime pigs for a range of outlets. For the second sale in a row prime pigs from J Stott, Crosscrake topped the market with an impressive trio of Pietrain x Saddleback gilts and hogs achieving £205. This was closely followed by CR Dickinson, Thurnham selling large white x gilts and hogs at £198, £192, £185. Other heavy white gilts from E Spedding & Son, Egremont. Medium weighted pigs sold to £158 from M & S Blease, Carnforth with others at £142 from AP Smith, Brookhouse and £138 GG & MA Long, Pennington. Top p/k this week was 195p/kg from J Stott, Crosscrake. All prime pigs today averaged 156p/kg.
Several cull sows forward selling to £100 and 37p/kg from Messrs Edmondson, Ambleside with lighter weights to £55 and 31p/kg from B Capstick, Sedbergh.

Store Pigs sold to £50 for large white from E Spedding, Egremont with others at £45 from E & K Thorpe, Waterfoot. Weaners sold to £45 for GOS x from MK & LK Whitley & Son, Harrogate who sold others at £43. Coloured weaners sold to £19.
Prime Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an netry of 1226 forward selling to a very two tiered trade lambs well finished and heavy continue to be in strong demand and eagerly bid for with a larger qyuantity of leaner grass feds types of lambs being penalised by buyers ringside. Heavy weights continue to see good returns topping at £139 from Richard Batty, Heversham with Texel lambs. This was followed by £136 twice from J & R Waller, Killington and Jack Turnbull, Meathop both consignors with Texels. The trade for heavy weight Suffolk’s peaked at £133.50 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Plenty more pens sold in the mid to late one hundred and twenties.
There was an overall market average of 218p/kg.

The new format of the Boys are back in town sale of terminal sire breeding tups was deemed a great success by vendors and buyers a like with a wonderful atmosphere throughout the evening. Purchasers were looking to purchase good quality rams with power and confirmation. The sale peaked £850 for a Texel shearling from Josh Capstick, Ingleton with others from the same home selling to £700. Other leading prices for Texel shearling tups was £750 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank followed by the consignment of Texel shearling tups from RG Blackburn, Penrith selling to £720, £700 and £620. This was followed by £650 from GR & RA Surtees, Lancaster. Aged texel tups sold to £550 from M Johnston, Heversham with a three shear. A consignment of Texel tup lambs from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle sold to £500, £400 and £380 twice.
Beltex cross shearling tups peaked at £800 from G Sowerby, Appleby followed by Beltex cross Charollais tups selling to £700 and £600 twice from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Plenty more continental tups saw strong tups regularly selling in the region of six hundred pound.
Suffolk breeding rams in big demand and short of supply in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors. Suffolks peaked at £680 for a tup lamb from Messrs Hewson, Carlisle with Suffolk shearlings selling to £550 from J & L Howard, Cockerham. Blue Texel breeding rams sold to a top of £480 for a two shear from Joe and Emily Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe.

90 calves forward with new buyers round the ring ensuring a flying calf trade, British Blue bulls topped at £490 from J Hornby & Son, Stank. Other British Blue bulls sold to £485 twice at four weeks old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. All British Blue bulls forward averaged £310. Limousin bulls sold to £450 from J Hornby & Son, Stank. British Blue heifers sold twice to £470 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. Limousin heifers sold to £380 from J Hornby & Son, Stank who sold others to £370. Black and Whites met a nice trade with the best rearers selling over the £100 mark topping at £155 from J Hornby & Son, Stank.
A mixed offering of 70 stirks were forward, a run of suckler bred 4 month old stirks from M&S Blease, Carnforth sold to £710 for Limousin bullocks with others from the same home selling to £690. Limousin bullocks sold to £690 from S Whitehead, Middleton. Hereford bullocks sold to £680 from W Stamper, Chipping. Continental bred bullocks at 4-6 month old and well grown were regularly selling at the £550-£650 mark.

A seasonal entry of store cattle, now starting to show the signs of the change in weather saw buyers showing the keenest interest in the well-bred and those that have been feed. Steers sold to a top price of £1355 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JM Haddow, Hincaster. Closely followed by Limousin x steers from JA Barnes, Whinfell achieving £1265. Other stronger steers generally sold from £1100 to £1200 which included a Hereford x at £1135 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. Younger Steers sold to £995 for a Hereford x from Ireland Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale followed by £970 achieved for 13 month old British Blue x from ST Birkett & Son. Dairy bred steers sold to £890 for a Holstein Friesian from CR Ford & Son, Ulverston who also sold Montbeliarde at £870.
Heifers saw a top price of £1180 achieved by JM Haddow, Hincaster for a Charolais. Limousin x sold to £1105 from Pearson & Jackson, Crook with others at £1100 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Numbers continue to raise at this popular fortnightly sale with 87 forward today, selling to an overall market average of 171p/kg. Heavy well finished beef cows sold to a top of 221.5p/kg for a British Blue x from A Winder & Son, Kirkby Stephen. A Limousin x cow from BJ Bowness, Kendal achieved 209.5p/kg. A Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside achieving 204.5p/kg, as did JF&C Saunders selling a Simmental cow. Other cows to break the £2 barrier included a Blonde from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh, with a Hereford from GM Redmayne falling just short at 199.5p/kg. A keen interest in cows suitable for finished regularly achieving 180-195p/kg depending on quality and type. Dairy cows sold to a top of 191.5p/kg for a British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with a Holstein Friesian selling to 181.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with others to 174.5p/kg from W Beck & Son, Tebay. Medium dairy cows generally were between 145-160p/kg with leaner and parlour types 120140p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from RJ&J Gardner, Natland achieving £1771, this was closely followed by JF&C Sanders, Marton selling a Simmental at £1740 with Stabiliser to £1666 and £1637 from A Dixon & Son, Selside. Top grossing heifer was a Stabilisers achieving £1330 with others at £1309 from A Dixon & Sons, Selside and diary heifers sold to £1155 for a Holstein Friesian from KT Robinson, Farlton. OTM steers sold to 194.5p/kg and £1058 for a Friesian from B Wilson, Crossthwaite. Cull bulls sold to 184.5p/kg from a Limousin from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere with an Aberdeen Angus from HMP Wymott, Kirkham achieving £1739. Calves and Stirks
Lancaster enjoyed a busy day with a bumper entry of 288 stirks, weanlings and calves forward with buyers in the market for all specifications. The trade today for the stirks saw the best bred and fed in big demand and easily sold with leaner types eagerly bid for but meeting realisation.
The stirk trade peaked at £870 for an Aberdeen Angus heifer from K McBride, Astley. Strong bullocks were in big demand with a pen of three Hereford yearling selling to £860 from JR Pye, Stalmine followed by a pen of three yearling bullocks to £850 from G Rawlinson, Astley. Other leading prices saw Aberdeen Angus bullocks from SE&J Gorst, Littledale to £830 with ten month old Hereford bullocks to £800 from R&A Jolleys, Cabus.
Continental bullocks saw yearling British Blues sell to £800 and £790 from JR Pye, Stalmine with nine month old British Blue bullocks to £790 from D&J Hay, Cockerham. This was followed by others to £750 from MD Close & Son, Arkholme. Fourteen month old black and white bullocks sold to £730 from K McBride, Astley with nine month old British Blue bulls sold to £650 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel.
A large number of weanlings forward today in the calf ring saw well grown quality ones in plenty of demand, peaking at £605 for a pen of three five month old British Blue bulls from J&G Thornley, Roseacre whom sold another pen to £560. Weanling Friesian bull calves sold to £385 from EW&R towers, Hornby with Fleckviehs to £375 and £370 twice.
The calf trade peaked at £360 for a British Blue from Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock. Aberdeen Angus bull calves topped at £350 from Tom Barron Farm, Woodplumpton who sold others to £340. Plenty of strong good quality calves regularly sold around the £300 mark with a busy ring side of buyers in the market today

Heavy well fleshed steers continue to sell to a premium today, peaking at £1720 for an Aberdeen Angus x from R Townsend, Freckleton. This was closely followed by Pilling Hall, Pilling selling an Aberdeen Angus and a Limousin to £1650 with others at £1580 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse and TJ Lloyd, Setting. Other notable prices included Salers at £1560 from M&M Carr, Carnforth, Fleckviehs to £1540 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse who also sold British Blue x at £1500. Charolais x sold to £1490 from L Goodier & Son, Lea. All steers forward today averaged £1202. Heifers sold to £1640 for a Limousin x from TJ Lloyd, Settle who sold others at £1620 with British Blue x selling to £1580 from GR&A Foy, Conder Green. The Charollais section topped at £1380 from DR Preston, Caton with Aberdeen Angus’s to £1270 from B&J Preston, Caton. All heifers today averaged £1070.

This week saw another increased entry of cull cows with 165 forward, due to the change in weather and many farmers now looking to turn in. Once again, a shortage of heavy and well finished cows with these types today selling to 221.5p/kg for a Limousin x from RG&L Holmes, Warton. Other Limousins sold to 219.5p/kg from JE&AC Clarke, Melling, British Blues also achieving 219.5p/kg from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Other heavy and well flesh beefs cows regularly sold at 185-205p/kg with feeding types 165-185p/kg. Dairy cows peaked at 194.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet and Fleckviehs to 191.5p/kg from EW&R Towers, Hornby. Other heavy cows were generally 175-190p/kg with medium types 145-170p/kg with the leanest and direct out of parlour types 110-135p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing beef cow today was a Limousin x from JE&AC Clarke & Son, Melling achieving £1546 with diary cows peaking at £1532 for a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. All cull cows forward today averaged 161p/kg.
24 OTM heifers sold to 217.5p/kg for a Hereford x from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham with another Hereford x from G Atkinson & Son, Quernmore achieving 207.5p/kg. Dairy heifers sold to 204.5p/kg for a British Friesian from WT Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet with Holstein Friesian to 194.5p/kg from Lawsons Dairy Ltd, Cockerham. Top grossing beef heifer was a Hereford x achieving £1381 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham who also sold the top price dairy heifer at £1293.
14 steers sold to 217.5p/kg for a Hereford x from D Burrow, Arkholme with beef shorthorns also achieving 217.5p/kg from JF&HE Caton, Cowan Bridge, Dairy steers sold to 211.5p/kg for a Friesian from DR Preston, Caton. Top grossing steer being a Hereford x from D Burrow, Arkholme achieving £1679.
A single cull bull forward today being an Aberdeen Angus x from S&J France, Over Wyresdale achieved 174.5p/kg and £1736.
Vendors are encouraged to have cull cows forward by 10am to allow all stock to be lotted and imputed, to allow for a prompt 10.15am sale start.
