North West Auctions great annual show and sale of Mule, Masham, Cheviot Mule, Continental ewes and gimmer shearlings boasted the largest catalogue entry of 5200. The trade throughout the sale was buoyant with people looking to purchase quality replacement sheep. The pre sale show saw a wonderful offering of Mule gimmer shearlings with the quality on offer a credit to the vendors. A thank you goes to our show sponsors, Carr’s Billington and Wadland Finance. The John Nelson memorial shield for the champion pen of Mule gimmer shearling was awarded to J Robinson & Z Ward, Nether Kellet.

The Derek Cleasby memorial trophy for the champion pen of ewes was awarded to F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston with a powerful pen. The sale commenced with breeding ewes which saw buyers keen to secure strong bodied sheep in forward tupping condition.

The Mule gimmer shearling trade saw a busy ring of buyers ensuring all types of sheep were well bid on. It was noted that sheep that had lambed which were double abortion vaccinated were in most demand with people looking for powerful sheep following on from a good trade throughout the summer in the cast ewe ring. The consignment from J Robinson and Z Ward, Nether Kellet led the way selling the second prize pen to £300 and the first prize pen to £280 which were purchased by the judge C Lines. The third prize pen of Mule gimmer shearlings sold to £250 from JK&BE Townley, Brookhouse. Other leading prices in the Mule gimmer shearling ring saw the consignment from G Sowerby, Appleby selling to £250. This was followed by the consignment from TH Gibson & Son, Stavely sold to £240, £230 twice, £220 and £215. R&C Rylands, Underbarrow sold his run of double vaccination lambed gimmer shearlings to £225, £220 and £205 three times. Other noted prices were £215 from E Parker, Mewith, £215 and £210 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston, £210, £208, £205 and £200 twice from AJ Geary, Milton Keynes, £205 from Messrs Whittaker, Millom followed by £200 for the top pen from N Barker, Burton in Kendal. Mule ewes sold to a top price of £200 for 1 crops from EM Whinspear, Hawes with 2 crops selling to £175 from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green followed by F & SA Edmonson, Ulverston achieving £165. Other ewes sold to £205 for 1 crop Suffolk x from TA & JA Dixon, Selside. Masham 1 crop ewes made £175 from R Seed & Son, Chipping and Texel x ewes at £165 from EI EA & TW Wilson, Grange Over Sands. All ewes forward came to an overall average of £141.

£1.37 on the year. Phil Mulcaster, Ulverston very kindly donated two Mule gimmer shearlings to be sold for the Crook Young Farmers Charity raising money for Blood Cancer research which raised £1000 for this worthy cause., a big thank you to all the bidders and under bidders. The continental gimmer shearling pre sale show was kindly sponsored by Wadland Finance and Carr’s Billington. I would like to take this time to thank our judge Bradley Norwood for his time and expertise. A wonderful show of fifteen pens of shearlings were forward after much time and deliberation the judge awarded his first prize rosette to TJ Jackson, Preston for a pen of Beltex x shearlings. Well bred strong continental gimmer shearlings were in particular strong demand and buyers were willing to pay a premium for these types. Leading the way were pure Texel shearlings from Sue Cunliffe, Field Broughton selling two pairs to £220. CD&HL Mason, Caton sold the run of home bred Texel shearlings selling to a top price of £210. Also achieving this price was JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal and EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. Beltex shearlings saw a good trade for the top end with TJ Jackson, Preston selling to £215 with other pens from the same good home selling to £210. Texels out of Mules saw the most demand from buyers with these regularly selling in the one eighty to one ninety mark with a top price of £195 from JR&LA Capstick, Killington.

Mitchells Auction Mart and North West Auctions conducted on Monday 22nd August 2022 the 21st Annual Whiteley Hey Production Sale of top quality Breeding Females and Shearling Rams on behalf of Mr Paul Slater within NWAuctions, J36. The Whiteley Hey Stock came up trumps again with 127 active buyers returning to J36 to purchase what can only be said to be an awesome show of top draw sheep. Pauls endeavour of always purchasing outstanding stock rams to maintain his high standard throughout his flock allowed the sheep on show today to have super carcass, skin and power again. The sale commenced with a bang with the opening sheep a 2 Shear Beltex x Texel ewe sired by a Stuart Wood Ram, the hammer fell at £800 to Mr Harry Wood, Popes Farm. Following closely was a single Black Beltex x Texel Shearling female selling for £650 which also went to the same Afterhome.the females were concluded an electric atmosphere was witnessed with Paul’s first pen of rams sired by Awesome and Crackerjack this pen averaged a whopping £1450. Momentum continued throughout the sale with both auctioneers enjoying selling the quality that was on show. Lot 118 a much admired ¾ Beltex x ¼ Texel ram caught the eye of many, sired by the Matt Burleigh Beltex with its dams going back to the Gangour Awesome. He sold to an fantastic price of 3800gns to Probert, Norting Town Farm. This was closely followed by lot 3 a pure Texel selling to 3,000gns sired by the renowned Gangour Awesome which went home with F Gargett, Barnard Castle. Powerful Pure Texel Rams saw eager bidding throughout the day with the next call of 2600gns for lot number 50. 66 Rams sold in excess of 1000gns.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 23rd August 2022. Prime Lambs: The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an entry of 1172 forward which sodl to a market average 240p/kg. The trade saw well fleshed lambs with weighting continuing to be the best to sell and adding up best. Taking top spot this week at £164 was heavy week Texel lambs from WG & D Wilkinson, Blawith followed by others to £153 from J & E Nuttall, Kendal. Heavy weight Charollais lambs sold to £147 and £138 from RJ Stott, Kendal. Plenty more sold in the region of £130. Heavy weight Mules sold to £119 and £115.50 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other Mules selling to £116 from R & E Ladds, Kendal. Lighter leaner types met a selective trade and would meet more demand in the store lambs sale.

Cast Sheep: 150 cast sheep through the ring this morning saw a better trade than anticipated with other auction reporting an easing of trade. Good big Texel ewes from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley saw a top price of £130 with others from the same good farming at £125. All Texel ewes averaged £102. Mule ewes saw prices to £116 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with others to £107 from HJ&BE Kelsall, Gressingham. All Mules forward averaged £84 for the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Beltex ewes from GR&A Foy, Conder Green sold to £113. A pen full of well presented Lonk ewes from S Bosworth, Burnley saw a final bid of £87. Cheviot from KA Purtill, Wigan achieved £106. Prime Lambs: The weekly sale of prime lambs saw just over 500 forward with many vendors on the six day standstill. Bradley Thompson in charge this week with Ian on duty at J36, a respectable 245p/kg average was achieved, well inline with other Monday auctions with an audience of 9 active buyers. As usual best meated lambs 45kg plus were good to sell, toping at £139 from J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton. Who also sold a tremendous single Texel lamb weighing 56kg sold to £138. T&CM Kelsall, Chipping also achieved £138 with heavy weight Texels. A trailer load of butcher type lambs from GR&A Foy, Conder Green topper at £138 for his Beltex x lambs with others at £133. Other noted prices saw JS Horner, Ingleton with Texel lambs at £137 and £135 B&SE Carter, Ellel. R Collinge & Son, Newton saw his Beltex lambs to 292p/kg or £114 for handy weights with B&SE Carter, Ellel to 291p/kg. Good meated Masham lambs from WI&AM Atkinson, Bleasdale topped at £129 with Mules at £110 from the same home. Other Mules from B&SE Carter, Ellel sold to £107 for a full ring.

Texels led the way selling to £148 from S Mawson & Son, Orton with other Texel ewes sold to £147 from M&S Blease, Carnforth. Suffolks sold to £120 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Mule ewes sold to a top of £109 from A Page, Fairbank with the best regularly selling over the £100 mark. Hill bred ewes were harder to place today with Cheviots selling to £90 twice from J&J Beary, Penrith and MP&CE Buckley, Staveley. Rough Fells sold to £90 from J&PR Woof, Sedbergh. More tups on the market today with Texels selling to £150 from S Mawson & Son, Orton and Charollais to £148 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth.

The fortnightly sale of Store lambs at North West Auction J36 Rural Centre had 2500 forward selling to a strong trade with an overall market average of £81.30 a head. The trade for strong forward lambs and medium keep lambs continues to be very strong and in demand with long term smaller lambs meeting less demand today then previous weeks. The sale peaked at £108 for continental store lambs from DJ & SB Clark, Clitheroe. The consignment of beltex x lambs from PD & P Mason, Burton in Kendal sold to £108 twice, £100 and £99. A run of strong forward store lambs from B & D Willison & Son Levens sold to £106, £104 with others to £96. The consignment from Ian Dixon, Low Newton sold to £99.50 for Texel lambs with other leading prices for Texel’s being £98.50 from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe followed by £98.50 and £96.50 from JM Harrison, Broughton in Furness. Plenty more strong pens of Texel lambs selling in the early nineties. Suffolk lambs sold to £86.50 from JF & AW Sutton, Long Sleddale followed by £86 from GM Redmayne, Ings. Strong mule lambs continue to be in demand selling to a top of £86 from Ian Dixon, Low Newton followed by £85.50 from JF & AW Sutton, Long Sleddale and £85 from Fishwick Bros, Long Sleddale. Plenty of pens of strong mules selling in the early eighties. Cheviot mules sold to a top of £85.50 from HM Hodgson, New Hutton. Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM's and Store Cattle. Fortnightly Sale of Dairy Cattle, Friday 26th August 2022. Dairy Cattle: Andrew Swale, Blackburn was once again at the top of the prices at Lancaster Auction with his pedigree heifer 'Phoenix Flower Art' which sold for a final bid of £3100. A consignment of heifers from Drinkall Bros, Overwyersdale sold to £2880 for 'Pennine Canary 192' with another from the same home achieving £2720 for 'Pennine Crocus 306' Buyers present for all classes and types with all heifers sold averaging £2310. Calves & Weanlings: The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw the summer show kindly sponsored by Semex and Norbreck Genetics and was expertly judged by regular buyer David Cumming, Preesall who we thank for his time and expertise.

Store Cattle: The weekly sale of store cattle saw similar numbers on the week, with no let up in trade and a ring full of new and returning buyers. Taking top price honours and understandably with the quality of the cattle they shows went to T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton with a pen of four Simmental bred steers achieving a final bid of £1770. Aberdeen Angus cattle which are easily sold at Lancaster saw steers £1600 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with others to £1540 from J Hartley, Preston. A good run off quality cattle from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man saw his Charolais steers to £1280 with others to £1270 from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton. Regular Lancaster supporters SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet saw British Blue Steers to £1450 with others loyal customers M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling at £1380. Dairy bred steers saw Montbeliards to £1400 from J Hartley, Preston with Friesians to £1370 from JS Clarke & Sons, Catforth. All steers today averaged £1215 with many strong cattle in the mix. Store heifers averaged £1120 for a plainer show of cattle on offer today. Top of the leader board today was three cracking Limousins selling to £1500 from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Not far behind at £1480 was EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with four Shorthorn heifers. J Oddie & Son, Balderstone broke the £1400 barrier at £1410 for an Aberdeen Angus with others from the same home at £1310. M Shephard & Sons, Pilling sold British Blue heifers to £1320 and £1300 with E Rossall, Preesall selling Simmentals to £1360 and G, GU&D Swarbrick to £1320. The Champion rosette was awarded to Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead for a British Blue bull selling at £390 with the judge backing his decision and purchasing it. Second prize in this tough class was awarded to AD&R Milnar, Claughton on Brock also with a British Blue bull and selling to a final bid of £370. D&K Howarth, Hambleton secured the third prize rosette with a young Limousin bull selling to £210. In the heifer class the Wallbank Family had a good day also securing first prize with a British Blue selling to £225, with Graham Billington, Claughton on Brock taking the second and third place rosettes. Out of the show saw a quality consignment of mainly 2 month old calves from RE&P Miller, Barnacre selling to £380 for a British Blue bull with Blue heifers from the same good home at £270. Limousin bull calves sold to £290 from DJ Clarke Farming, Garstang with Limousin heifers to Native£240. bred calves today saw Aberdeen Angus bred calves to £310 for a bull from JK&BJ Birkett & Sons, Morecambe with Aberdeen Angus Heifers to £200 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. OTM Cattle: Fridays OTM cattle sale saw 98 cattle through the bottom ring with the upcoming bank holiday Monday not affecting the trade. Achieving a respectable market average of 173p/kg for all classes and types.

Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham had a good day selling Friesian cows to a fantastic top of £1688, £1596 and £1544. RW&FJ Rhodes, Ellel broke the £1500 barrier with Stabilisers to £1556. Just a handful of OTM steers in today, selling to a top of 239p/kg or £1681 and 237p/kg or £1626 for Aberdeen Angus’s from B&J Preston, Caton.

OTM heifers from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale saw British Blues to 227p/kg or £1296 with other beef bred heifers to 214p/kg or £1525 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. Friesian heifers sold to 221p/kg from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. More OTM cattle are required for next Fridays sale.
