NWA J36 - Thursday 12th June - Fortnightly Sale Fortnightly Sale of Rearing Calves & Stirks, Dairy Cattle, Store Cattle, Cast/Feeding Cows, OTM & Clean Cattle. Calves & Stirks North West Auctions held its fortnightly sale of calves and stirks at J36 selling another strong entry of 80 forward. Good types of beef calves continue to be eagerly sought after at J36 with Black and Whites a stronger trade than seen over previous weeks. The continued drop in beef prices is beginning to filter its way through to calves. Six week old Limousin x heifer calves sold to a top price of £335 from Brian Wilson of Spout House with British Blue bulls calves from R Morris-Eyton & Son of Beck Side twice sold to £330. Limousin heifers again sold to £330 from Brian Wilson with a good quality show of Limousin heifers averaging £272. One month old black and white bull calves sold to £72 and £68 from the Inman Family of Strickland Hill. Quite a few young stirks and weanlings in the market today sold to a level trade topping at £410 JS & I Wilson of Monk Foss Farm for Limousin bulls with Limousin heifers from the same home to £390. More calves wanted to meet the ever growing demand from buyers - for more information please contact Ian Atkinson 07766521472 Dairy Cattle A strong entry of 19 new calved heifers and cows forward today of mixed quality selling to a selective crowd of bidders with many missing due to the good weather as well of the drop in milk prices having an effect on the prices achieved. Heifers sold to a top price of £1600 for a pedigree giving 25litres 14days calved from R Lawson & Son of Deerslet Farm. Also achieving £1600 was a second calver been calved 8 days and already giving 6.5 gallons from GR Park & Sons of Low Deepslack. Third calved cows sold to £1520 giving 38litres from Michael Carr of Clawthorpe Lodge. New calved heifers regularly sold in the £1500’s. Cast Cows A smaller entry of cast cows were put before a full ringside of buyers and considering the on-going drop in beef prices, all classes of cows still met a respectable trade to average 121.06p/kg. Black & White cows topped at 134.5p/kg for a well fleshed cow from JW & TW Sharp of Kendal with well finished cows regularly 120 – 125 whilst leaner sorts were 95p/kg – 105p/kg. Continental cows peaked at 139.5p/kg on two occasions with the majority 120p/kg - 130p/kg. A small show of clean cattle saw a Limousin heifer from TS & SM Park of Millom top at 184.5p/kg. Store Cattle A small show of store cattle were forward with all classes and breeds selling to a very competitive trade with the majority of cattle forward between 10 – 14 months of age.

NWA LANCASTER - Friday 13th June - Weekly Sale Store Cattle The good weather lead to a smaller show of cattle forward today at Lancaster with well fleshed cattle a decent trade with Black and whites harder to place. The trade topped at £1270 for a British Blue steer from M Shepherd & Sons of Pasture House Farm with Simmentals from Barlow Brothers of Littlewood Hall Farm selling to £1240 at just over 24months old. Heifers sold to £1180 for a Blonde from JA & LR Wilson of Dunningwell Farm with other heifers from the same home to £1160. Hereford heifers sold to £1130 from David Knowles at Windy Hill. Summer cattle continue to a look a good trade with a couple of 13month old steers from A & P Hodgkinson of Stalmine selling to £830. Congratulations to JR & A Thornton of Coventry Farm for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together. OTM & Cast Cattle OTM cattle trade continues to stay stable and looks strong compared to clean beef prices. Cast cows sold to a top price of 161.5ppk for a Limousin cow from A & P Hodgkinson of Bank Field with cows from the same home selling to a top of £1275 with a British Blue. Bulls sold to a top of 137.5ppk or £1313 from Jim Clark of Leigh with a good old Limousin Stock Bull. JH Towers & Sons of Tunstall Hall sold the top price Black and white of the day selling to 137.5ppk. Dairy cast cows averaged 114ppk with all cows forward averaging 118ppk. Calves Mixed entry of 40 rearing calves this morning sold to a top of £360 for a month and 4day Blue Bull from regular vendor Wallbank Farms Ltd, others from the same home sold to £355. Blue Heifers from SH & LE Birkett, Carnforth sold to £328 from a smart 1month and 23day old, with others from the same home selling to £318. Cattle Vendors - Please Note Black and white trade was selective with a cracking 1m and 20day old from Wallbank Farms selling to £142. Others from Mssrs Casson, Buyers Want Farm Assured Cattle, it is advantageous to be Farm Slyne sold to £118. A young British Friesian selling to £100. Assured to realise the best prices Trade was in line with other local markets, with good strong calves good to sell.

NWA LANCASTER - Monday 16th June - Prime Stock Prime Lambs The early summer show and sale of prime lambs at Lancaster had a good quality show of lambs forward in 1328 Prime Lambs to £126 & 262.0p/kg front of the judge Mr Michael Winchester of Woodhead Bros which was kindly sponsored by Cox Agri who Weights Top Av. were represented on the day by Rachael Povall. The Suffolk class was won by Andrew Butler of Parks Farm Standard 32 ½ -39 262.0 232.0 Barn which went on to sell for £102 to the judge. The continental class was won by Joe Townley of Mearsbeck Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 258.0 236.0 with a pen of 5 smart Texel lambs which went onto win the championship weighing 42kg later selling for £108 Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 246.0 244.0 to Michael Lomax. There was another strong entry of over 1300 prime lambs forward at Lancaster which sold to a strong average of 234ppk. Heavy weight lambs sold to a top price of £126 from John Collinge of The Dingle. Cast Ewes The trade for cast sheep continues to hold firm. Best continental ewes sold well into the hundreds today topping at £128 for a big Charollais ewe from Richard Roskell of Springfield House. This was closely followed by John Geldard of Low Faulshaw selling Charollais to £120 and others to £112. Mule ewes sold to a top price of £83 a head from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands with all Mule ewes forward average £79. Prime Bulls A small entry of only three bulls forward were met by a strong trade considering the current beef prices. They sold to a top price of 181.5ppk S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm for Limousin with bulls from the same home selling to 175.5ppk for a British Blue and Friesian bulls to 149.5ppk.

NWA LANCASTER - Monday 16th June - Monthly Dairy Sale An entry of 51 dairy cattle were forward this month, met by a ring of 14 active buyers with many leaving empty handed. Judging was conducted by Mr W Taylor of Carlisle, who had a strong entry in each class. The reserve champion rosette was award to the first place cow, Lot 34, Pennine Graceful 62 from Messers Drinkall. The Mr Minister daughter, bred from three generations of VG & EX sold to £1900 to J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Taking the Champion rosette and the F Ellis Cup was Berryholme Fever Linda from H Wright & Son, Kendal. This first prize non-halter led heifer bred from Berryholme Kite Linda, an EX92 Dam and sired by Crackhom Fever sold to a final call of Champion Heifer berryhole Fever £2400 to the Judge. Linda with Sponsors Rachael Povall The best pairs was awarded to R Lawson & Son, Deerslet with Deerslet Avon Fortune and Deerslet Bluesky Belinda, selling to £1780 and £2180 respectively.

Heifers averaged £1880 selling to a top of £2480 from W Rogerson & Son, Singleton and £2450 from P Knowles, New Hutton, with 14 selling in advance of £2000. Cows averaged £1600 and sold to a top of £1900. All cattle sold to their full value, with both new buyers and new vendors in attendance from North Cumbria, East Yorkshire and the Midlands.

NWA J36 Crooklands - Tuesday 17th June
North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 where some 1485 prime lambs and 543 cast sheep were put before a full ringside of buyers. Today included the Summer Show & Sale Prime Lambs with classes for pens of 5 Texel/Continental lambs and 5 Suffolk lambs which was judged by Mr Jim Holden from Woodhead Bros., who awarded the following accolades. Buyers were much more cautious today which reflects in the market average and this fell in line with the overall national average which was some 20p + per kilo down on the previous day’s trade. However, lambs topped at £108 per head for a pen of Charollais lambs from W S Burrow & Sons of Silverdale purchased by Bowood Yorkshire Lamb. Top price per kilo was 245.9 pence for a single Beltex x lamb from Master P Osmond of Priest Hutton selling to Mansergh Hall Farm Shop. Well finished lambs of any weight were good to sell whilst leaner sorts were met with a little more caution. Cast Sheep – A big show of cast sheep were forward with all classes being strongly competed for. Continental ewes regularly breaking the £100 barrier. Mule ewes to £83 with plenty £75 - £82. Horned ewes to £78. Also forward today were a lot of plain Swaledale ewes which sold to a very strong trade.
