Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs. Monday 31st March 2025.

Prime Hoggs- Prime Hoggs sell to £211 & 421p/kg

A sharp rise in numbers forward today and despite reports elsewhere of a falling trade a very respectable SQQ of 325p/kg was achieved for an entry of predominantly grass finish hoggs, heavies perhaps the least desirable with many customers presenting the last of their hoggs, hoggs today ranged from 28kg-70kg. Well finished standard weight hoggs remain the strongest trade selling to £184 (409p/kg) for Beltex x from D&K Swarbrick with others £181 (411p/kg M & YS Barker. The sale topped at £211 for heavy weight Texel x from GH Sanderson & Family. Nicely finished light weights £125-£132.

Kevin Purtill returned to the top of the board today selling Beltex x hoggs to 421p/kg with other better end 380p/kg – 410p/kg and grass finished hoggs 340-360p/kg. Heavy weights generally 290p/kg-310p/kg.

Cull sheep remained a strong trade with a top prize of £248 achieved for a BFL ram from RH & C Ayrton Ltd, Abbeystead. Ewes sold to £232 for cheviot mules from G&D Ball & Son, Little Eccleston with other stronger end ewes generally £185-£210, mediums £155-£180 with the leaner end £125-£140. Hill ewes sold to £176 for cheviots with others £145-£165. Just a handful of horned ewes being smaller mediums to £102.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot- Breeding Sheep to £415 & £415/life.

This popular weekly sale saw another rise in numbers forward with an ever expanding ringside of buyers in attendance for all classes and types.

Continental ewes with texel x twins sold to £415 from TR Gorst, Ellel who sold others at £410 with ewes with younger lambs generally £330-£360. Another entry of 2/4 crop mule ewes with twin texel lambs from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne sold to £405 with others at £380 twice. Cheviot mule ewes from M Allen, Carnforth sold to £390 with twin Beltex x lambs. Ewes with singles sold to £290 for Cheviot mules with Beltex x lambs from M Allen, Carnforth with continentals £285, £280 from T Gorst, Ellel and £260 JM & NJ Strickland, Mules with single sold to £255 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne. Sheep and lambs flying today at Junction 36.

A larger show than previous weeks and numbers are looking greater still for next week.

Singles in particular were in demand today, with a top price of £380 from MW&HE Pedley for single Texel outfits with Texel lambs. This was closely followed by another pen at £385 from the same home. The same home also had the joint top price for twins achieving £420 for the same goods, this price was shared with AP Metcalfe, Kendal for a pen of Dutch Spotted and JM Livestock, Ayrshire with a pen of Suffolks with Charollais cross Beltex lambs. Quality twins were available in abundance today, with the £400 barrier being broken regularly. Mules were a solid trade once again with a large cliental after this category, topping at £340 from Bob Lawrence for a pen with twin Texel lambs.

Prime Hoggs- Smorgasbord of Prime Hoggs

A diverse show of sheep were on offer today at J36 ranging from 17 to 73kg. Along side the usual abundance of breeds including Shetlands, Dorsets and many Herdwicks & Swales. Varity however is the spice of life and for many of the sheep sold today a very tasty trade was met. 40-45kg sheep regularly sold between £150 and £160. 47kg hoggs hit £181 from AT Burrow & Son for a Beltex. The same home got £161 for 44s. Lighter 37kg Beltex from DJ Clarke made £143. The same home then had a pen of 5 32kp hoggs hit £122 or 383.1ppk. Messrs Little of Helm Croft also got £161 for 43kg Texels which proved around the ideal weight of the day. Heavy hoggs still not quite as desirable for buyers currently however handy weights were fought for hard from the offset. The next slae of Prime Sheep is in a weeks time on the 8th April. There was no fooling around today in the cast sheep sale ring, with another fast and competitive trade for all classes and types. Once again, a large proportion of the sale was made up of pure hill bred ewes with the strongest ewes in short supply. Just a handful of pure ewes forward today sold to £300 and £280 for Texels from Harry Geldard, Levens with the best first cross to £230 from Messrs Threlkeld, Carnforth and £220 from E Dodgson, Kendal. Endless pens of cross bred ewes £170 to £200. Mules sold to £180 for North Country Mules from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with other stronger pens £170 to £180, mediums £140 to £160 and smaller meated ewes £140 to £160. Pure hill bred ewes sold to £120 for Cheviots, £148 Herdwicks and £134 Swaledales. Well fleshed hill ewes were £100 to £125, mediums £80 to £95 with only the smallest and leanest less. Just a handful of cull rams forward, selling to £185, with mediums £160 to £180 and hill rams £110 to £130.

The numbers keep rolling in here at Junction 36, as yet more new faces are presenting both buying and selling. The trade was lit up by a cracker of a British Blue bull from BR Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal when it reached new heights of £920.

Charolais bulls from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall reached £890, with a further two at £860. Aberdeen Angus bulls were a marvellous trade with these topping at £880 and £870 from W&S Airey, Whittington. Limousins from Langley Park Farms, Millom sold to £840 and £810. Younger month old sorts topped at £780 for a British Blue from HJ Robinson, Kendal with Limousin at this age to £680 from AE Luffman, Sedbergh. Two week old bulls sold to £470 for a British Blue from Dolphenby Farming, Penrith.

Heifer calves were equally as nice to sell, topping at £790 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from W&S Airey, Whittington with other Aberdeen Anus cross to £770 from both SW&K Metcalfe, Whittington and CR Dickinson, Thurnham. Charolais heifers to £760 and £740 from JH Towers & Son, with Limousins to £740 from Langley Park Farm, Millom. British Blue cross sold to £550 for six week olds from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton with thirty day old British Blues to £510 from Dolphenby Farming, Penrith and twenty eight day old Herefords to £330 from this same good farming. The consignment of Holstein heifers from G&F Barnes, Clitheroe sold to £290, with others at £140 and £240 at just three weeks of age.

A pleasing entry of 94 forward today, with an abundance of customers in attendance all keen to secure stock ahead of turn out.

A mixed entry of bulls saw a top price of £1660 for a nine month old Limousin cross from B Heys, Mossborough. A run of South Devons (8 months) sold to £1640 and £1600 from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston. Other bulls sold to £1500 for a Limousin cross from D&A Nicholson, Subberthwaite with nine month old Hereford cross selling to £1480 from J&JR Stott, Kingsland. Young well reared bulls sold to £860 for a four month old Limousin cross from Langley Park Farm, Millom. Plenty of interest in steers ahead of turn out, with six to ten month old steers from BR Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal selling to £1380, £1360 and £1280. British Blue cross sold to £1310 from AT Bainbridge, Kirkby Stephen. Suckler bred steers sold to £1380 for nine month old Limousin cross from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook with others at £1330 from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? … no, it’s the sky high trade at Junction 36!

We aim for the moon at Kendal Auction Mart where the ozone layer has been broken yet again for store cattle. The stratospheric trade leaves vendors lightheaded, as bodies adjust to unknown levels of altitude.

Twenty month old Aberdeen Angus bullocks from JE Wightman, Lupton sold to £2480. The same good home then sold another pen to £2300. Charolais bullocks topped at £2370 at just sixteen months old from J Turnball, Grange Over Sands. Even younger British Blue bullocks made £2160 at twelve month old from TW Nelson, Kendal.

Heifers hit £2300 for a Simmental from JF&C Saunders, Ulverston. A Limousin heifer from JE Wightman, Lupton sold to £2130, while a pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers at around the twenty month mark made £2000 from the same home. Yearling British Blue heifers from A Winder & Son, Kirkby Stephen achieved £1900.

Cull cows sold to a phenomenal trade, with over half the entry being parlour type dairy cows still achieving a respectable market average of 260.98p/kg.

Young beef cows sold to 379p/kg for a Limousin from S Whitehead, Middleton with other well-bred half meated beef cows regularly 260p/kg to 300p/kg, with feeding types 240p/kg to 260p/kg. Top grossing was a Limousin achieving £2394, with Charolais to £2392. Endless beef cows were £1800 to £2200. Dairy cows sold to 279.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from Jenkin Cragg, Kendal with other well meated dairy cows regularly 240p/kg to 260p/kg, parlour types 210p/kg to 230p/kg and only the very leanest 190p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing was a Holstein Friesians from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe at £2088, with other at £2052 and £2033.

An exceptional strong trade for all calves at NWA Lancaster, with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved and buyers extremely suited with the quality of cattle presented.

A run of eight week old British Blue cross calves from SH&M Batty, Quernmore sold to £850 for bulls, with others regularly £720 to £800. Heifers from this same good home sold to £730, with others at £670. A trio of eye-catching calves out of Friesian type cows from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe saw six week old Limousin cross to £840, with heifers of the same breed achieving £770 and nine week old Hereford cross bulls to £770. Messrs Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale sold ten week old Limousin cross bulls to £750, with similar aged British Blue cross bulls £740 and other six to seven week old calves from the same home were £620 to £650. JP&C Robson, Brock sold the best of theirs to £640 for British Blue cross steer, with heifers selling to £560. Native bred reared calves sold to £870 for sixteen week old Aberdeen Angus cross bulls from J&M Coar & Son, Waddington who sold others at £860. RE&P Miller, Barnacre sold thirteen week old Aberdeen Angus cross bulls to £660. Strongest dairy bulls sold to £390 for Holstein Friesians from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with medium dairy bulls £160 to £210.

A full row of stirks were well received with the consignment of seven week old British Blue cross steers from Throstle Nest, Pilling selling to £1260, with other from this same home at £1180, £1160 and £1100. Total of 165 Store Cattle went through the main ring with vendors having to take a seat as they took in the trade with cattle being up another gear again as demand out strips supply.

As ever at Lancaster, Aberdeen Angus steers led the way to £2800 for EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine not far behind at £2720 also Aberdeen Angus from WT Eastham & Sons, Goosnargh. Pair of British Blues to £2700 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet usual run of quality cattle saw a top of £2650 for a pair of Limousin who also had a trio of Simmentals to £2500. Dairy bred steers to £2120 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine for Friesians with others to £1980 from MJ Waller, Lupton. A good entry of younger grazing type steers today saw 16 month old British Blue steers to £1650 from AJ Metcalf, Out Rawcliffe with 12 month old British Blue from G & ID Postlethwaite to £1420. All steers today average £2090. No let up in trade for store heifers with a pleasing average of £1802. R Capstick & Son, Ingleton hitting the top spot with a grand pair of Limousin heifers to £2380 with his neighbour J & M Cockett & Son not far behind at £2350 also for Limousin. EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine continued their good days trading with Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2280. J & S Winstanley, Preston saw his British Blue heifers to £2250 with other British Blues to £2200 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Grazing type heifers saw 15-17 month old Aberdeen Angus to £2000 for a pen of six from Charlie Butler, Hambleton with JM & DJ Townley & Sons, Quernmore at the same price also for Aberdeen Angus. Cull cows finish the week with an average of 285ppk, with an abundance of buyers keen to secure all classes and types for both further feeding and to meet orders. Beef cows sold to a top of 309ppk for British Blue x from GE JA & J Hayhurst, Ellel with Limousins selling to 229.5ppk from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham, with other beef cows generally 270-290ppk. 72% of the sale consisted of dairy cows which saw a top price of 349.5ppk for a young Holstein Friesian from J & G Thornley Ltd, Kirkham. Other dairy cows sold to 254.5ppk from GA & A Atkinson & Son, Cantsfield. Parlour type cows were regularly 210-240ppk with the lightest and leanest 180-205ppk. Top grossing beef cows another British Blue x from JE JA & J Hayhurst, Ellel achieving £2287, with dairy cows to £2280 for a Holstein Friesian from T Taylor, Woodplumpton.

OTM beef heifers sold to 398.45ppk for British Blue x from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale and a Stabaliser from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe. Other beef heifers were regularly 350-385ppk. Top grossing Stabaliser achieved £2333. OTM dairy heifers sold to 349.5ppk from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Garstang and GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield with others regularly 310335ppk. Top grossing totalling £2380.
