Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep. Monday 3rd February 2025.
No messing on Mondays at NWA Lancaster - Prime hoggs to £190 and 418p/kg, Cull ewes to £140.
Prime Hoggs
The call for prime hoggs was answered, a larger entry forward was greeted by a fast and competitive trade with an SQQ of 343p/kg. Standard weight hoggs sold to an extremely competitive trade, with over weights perhaps seeing the greatest level of resistance.
Well fed and well-bred hoggs continue to sell to a premium, topping at £190 for a pair of Beltex cross from KA Purtill, Wigan with other at £184 from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston and J Twigge, Lindale. Others were regularly £170 to £180. A top of 418p/kg was achieved by GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston selling Beltex cross. Others exceeding the 400p/kg barrier was KA Purtill, Wigan and ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth with endless other pens 375p/kg to 395p/kg.
Well finished first cross hoggs were regularly £155 to £165 and 340p/kg to 365p/kg. Hill bred hoggs sold to £159 and 335p/kg for Cheviots.
Mule/Mashams sold to £151 and 322p/kg, Herdwicks to £144 and 272p/kg, with others horned hoggs to £130. Several pens of lighter weight hoggs forward sold to £152, with other pens of well-bred Continentals £128 to £136, ranging from 300p/kg to 360p/kg.

Cast sheep saw a rise in price with all sold average £136, the best continentals sold to £240 for Texel from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with others at £220 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and £194 from J Gardner, Bay Horse. Heavy weight Mules sold to £159 again from R&DL Cornthwaite, with others £140 to £152. Medium ewes of all breeds were regularly £128 to £140. Several pens of hill ewes forward saw Cheviot to £141 and £140 from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton with Swaledales to £97 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: February Online Machinery Sale, Tuesday 4th February 2025.
The popular monthly online sale of machinery at NWA J36 once again saw a wide range of vehicles, machinery and equipment on sale and selling to buyers from throughout the United Kingdom.
Several tractors forward this month with a Case JX90 comes with loader achieving £11,300, JCB Fastrac at £7900, John Deere 2650 at £6000, other vehicles included a Ford Ranger pickup at £4250, Hitchi Digger at £4200, Forklift truck at £4000 and a Ford Transit Van at £3500.
Seasonal machinery was extremely well sought after with a McHale Straw Chopper at £6000, Primex Tanker at £4100, Power Harrows at £3000, Teagle Chopper at £2300 and Slurry Stirrer at £1900!

Prime hoggs take another lift on the week, with a new gear found for the best and fittest end of sheep.
A pair of Charollais topped today’s sale from TA Teasdale, Grange Over Sands at £224.
A pair of Texels from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston hit £220.
A group of three Texels from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby sold to 415p/kg.
Many more sheep sold over the two-hundred-pound mark or just short of it, more than seen in a long time, accompanied with huge numbers selling between 380p/kg to 400p/kg.
Horned and hill sheep were also dearer on the week for the most part, with good meat selling whatever the breed.
Cheviots sold to 355p/kg from Stockdale Farms, Sedbergh.
Hardwicka sold to 330p/kg from JJ France, Caton.
Dalesbreds sold to 328p/kg from R Capstick, Ingleton.
Handy weight sheep were again in most demand. A 37kg Texel from JE Wightman, Lupton sold to £140, and another the same weight made the same money from JJ France, Caton. A pen of eight 38kg hoggs from MW&MR Black, Kendal sold at £143. 41kg hoggs from KA Purtill, Wigan sold to £162 or 395p/kg, while a pen of eight Charollais at 44kg hit £169. Heavier hoggs from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby achieved £202 at 49kg, while 48kg hoggs from the same home made £189. Even heavy sheep were dearer again, with 54kg from the same home reaching £195 or 361.1p/kg. Cull sheep of all classes and types took a sharp rise in trade, with ten buyers ringside all keen to fill ordered and asking for more each week. Several stronger and pure ewes sold to £300 for Texels, with others £250 to £290 and the mediums £175 to £210. First cross ewes sold to £250 for Texel cross, other stronger end ewes were £170 to £200, mediums £140 to £165 and the leaner end £110 to £130. Mules sold to £192 for Cheviot Mules, £180 North Country Mules, £170 Herdwick Mules and £168 Rough Fell Mules. Endless stronger pens were £145 to £160, mediums £130 to £140 and the leaner end £110 to £125. Pure hill ewes sold to £170 for Cheviots, £142 Dalesbreds, £142 Rough Fells, £132 Swaledales, £126 Lonks and £96 Herdwicks. Meated horned ewes were £100 to £115, mediums £90 to £100 with leaner framed ewes £80 to £90. The smallest sorts were regularly £70 to £80, with only the smallest less.
Several yearling goats sold to £102. Cull rams sold to £195 for the best medium continentals, with others £160 to £190. Hill rams sold to £160 for SBF and £132 for Swaledale’s.

Stirks- The Robinson ring roars with stirks selling to new heights.
The ever-increasing popular sale of weaned calves and stirks saw the largest entry to date, with 156 forward and sold. New and additional buyers were in attendance from the northern counties, midland and Wales, all keen to return well suited with the quality of cattle presented.
Steers sold to a top price of £1360 for a pen of four seven month old Limousin steers from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool. B Heys, Mosborough sold nine month olds at £1240. Messrs Barker, Penrith sold seven month old Charolais cross at £1210, with endless pens of seven to ten month old steers £1000 to £1180. Dairy bred steers sold to £970 for ten month old British Blue cross from S Cleasby, Brough on Furness, who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £960. Younger native sired steers were generally £800 to £880, topping at £890 for Aberdeen Angus cross from T Parker, Bentham. Dairy steers sold to £950 for twelve month old black and whites from JR Robinson & Son, Nook.
Heifer stirks sold to £1140 for a pair of eight month old Limousin cross from B Heys, Mosborough with seven month olds to £1090 from PJ Holt, Blackpool and six month old Blonde and Limousin £1010 from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh. Other six to seven month old suckler bred heifers were generally £850 to £990. Diary bred British Blue cross heifers sold to £870 from M Gibson, Sedbergh who sold others at £810. Younger native sired heifers were £550 to £700.
Bull stirks saw a top price of £1220 for a pair of six month old Charolais cross bulls from AG&ME Clarkd, Grange Over Sands with others £1150 from J Turnball, Meathop. Five month old Blondes were £970 from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh. A ring full of six month old Stabilisers from M Allen, Yealand sold at £880. Younger six month old dairy bred bulls were generally £650 to £800.

Beef Breeding Cattle
North West Auctions had the pleasure of conducting the 5th annual production sale of Sim Luing heifers on behalf of Low Moor Howe, Winster. Which saw buyer interest from all four nations all keen to secure these high health status replacements, which have proved themselves over recent years. This sale peaked at £3000 for a single heifer, being one of the best ever presented. Closely followed by a pair at £2850 and a trio at £2700. Others from this consignment were regularly £2300 to £2500, with an overall average of £2504.

The remarkable surge in store cattle prices continues! Those not bidding on cattle stood and watched with mouths wide open. The new era of cattle trading is upon us and is truly eye watering.
Twenty one month old Charolais bullocks sold to £2260 from H Morgan, Stalmine. Eleven month old Charolais bullocks sold to £1700 from WA Atkinson, Ulverston.
Seven month old Limousin bullocks sold to £1620 from JT Proctor, Grange Over Sands. Whether big or small, old or young, another new gear was found at Junction 36 today.
Other bullocks sold to £2100 at twenty one months from H Morgan, Stalmine. Two more Limousins from FW Park, Windermere achieved £2060 at twenty months old. Hereford bullocks hit £2040 from JL Bird, Grange Over Sands. Limousin heifers at nineteen and twenty months from FW Park, Windermere reached £1960. Even younger British Blues sold to £1820 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Twelve month old Limousins from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston hit £1660. Runs of cattle at ten to eighteen months sold fiercely from start to finish, ranging from £1600 to £1800.

OTM Cattle- Cull cows trade fast and furious at NWA J36
The ever-popular sale of cull cows saw all cows forward sell to an average of 221p/kg. OTM heifers averaged 267p/kg and OTM steers 285p/kg.
The best of the beef cows sold to 279.5p/kg for a Limousin from Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre, Ings. Others achieved 269.5p/kg for a Limousin from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh and P&TL Edmondson, Kirkby in Furness. Endless medium cows were 230p/kg to 250p/kg, with leaner feeding types 200p/kg to 225p/kg. Top grossing beef cows was a South Devon from AT Threlkeld, Ulverston achieving £2066. An Aberdeen Angus cow from PC Sansom, Underbarrow achieved £1934 with endless beef cows £1550 to £1800. Dairy cows sold to 244.5p/kg for a British Friesian from RJ&ML Lowery, Cartmel. An entry of predominately parlour type cows were 190p/kg to 215p/kg. Top grossing being a British Friesian again from RJ&MJ Lowery, Ulverston at £1857, with other dairy cows generally £1200 to £1380.
OTM heifers sold to 294.5p/kg and £1802 for a Black and white from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack with beef heifers to 279.5p/kg and £1802 for Hereford from RJ&J Gardner, Natland.
OTM steers sold to 299.5p/kg and £2009 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from BJ Bowness, Kendal. More cows are required at each sale to satisfy buyers requirements.

Fast and furious Fridays at NWA Lancaster saw prices across all three sale rings rise again, with many customers reporting trade well ahead of other local centres.
Calves & Stirks- Weaned stirks to £1070 and calves to £740.
70 calves and weaned stirks in today’s sale, with trade continuing to rise.
Bull calves sold to £740 for a Limousin cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale, with Aberdeen Angus cross close behind at £700 from I Richardson, Catforth. Herefords sold to £600 from JR Newsham, Conder Green with younger British Blues to £570 for Barber Farms, Claughton on Brock, £550 from JP&C Robson, Garstang and £530 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Black and Whites sold to £430 from JR Newsham, Conder Green with others to £420 from this home. Heifer calves sold to £690 for one of three very sweet British Blues from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with the remainer achieving £670 and £650. A&T Smith, Longridge sold British Blues to £525 for six week olds, with JP&C Robson, Garstang selling to £500 for the same age. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £420 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with the very youngest to £350 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe.

Weaned stirks were a phenomenal trade, reaching £1070 for Aberdeen Angus cross bullocks from J&M Coar, Waddington. This same home sold Aberdeen Angus cross to £1000 and Hereford cross to £910. Younger freshly weaned sorts from AJ Metcalfe, Out Rawcliffe sold away to £710 for Aberdeen Angus cross bullocks and £620 for Aberdeen Angus cross heifers.

Store Cattle
All classes of store cattle once again sold to new levels, with all steers averaging £1832, all heifers £1673 and bulls £1623. Endless pens of steers were £2000 to £2250, with a top price of £2350 achieved for a pair of Aberdeen Angus cross steers from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton and a pair of Charolais cross steers from EE Thornton, Heaton who also sold Aberdeen Angus steers to £2320. Stronger feeding steers were £1700 to £1950, to include top price dairy steers being a ring full of British Friesian achieving £1820. Younger steers sold to £1550 for fourteen month old British Blue cross, with others generally £1380 to £1500.
Heifers sold to a trop of £2340 for a trio of British Blue cross from R&DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. A Limousin achieved £2200 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead with others breaking the £2000 barrier from Barlow Bros, Croston and HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. Stronger end feeding heifers were regularly £1680 to £1900, with the younger end selling to £1600 and regularly £1280 to £1450. The sale commenced with several feeding bulls which saw Aberdeen Angus cross sell to £1700 and Montbeliarde to £1600 from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh.

The renowned Friday sale commenced with cull cows, which saw an average 234p/kg, for an entry of predominately parlour type dairy cows.
Of the few beef cows forward a top price of 269.5p/kg and £2196 was achieved for a Charolais from MJ Waller, Lupton. Other beef cows were regularly 240p/kg to 260p/kg and £1450 to £1600, for predominately feeding types. The best of the dairy cows sold to 231.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh and 225p/kg on three occasions for Holstein Friesians. Top grossing being £1804 for a Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with other heavier diary cows £1400 to £1600 and parlour types £1150 to £1300.
