NWA J36 - Thursday 5th June - Beef Breeding Sale ANNUAL BEEF BREEDING CATTLE SALE A packed ringside of buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Midlands & Scotland were present at the Annual Sale of Beef Breeding Cattle held at J36 Rural Auction Centre on Thursday. A pedigree Charolais bull from A Dixon & Son, Kitcragg sired by ‘Digger’ and traceable back to the ‘Talisman’ family sold first to a final call of £1800. Cows and calves sold to £2400 from RT & J Gorst with others at £2280, £2200 & £2100. Heifers with Calves sold to £1900 from EJ Hodgson & Son. The production sale of Stabiliser x cows saw fourth calved cows sell to £1550 & £1500 with buyers keen to purchase cattle from this popular sale. In-calf cattle sold to £1320 for best Limousin x heifers from T,L,B & J Knowles.

OTM and Cast Cattle OTM cattle continue to be a strong trade considering yet another drop in beef prices. A smaller entry of 45 cattle forward today with the good weather having an effect on the numbers forward as many try to get some silage. Cast cows sold to a top price of 147.5ppk from RH & C Ayrton & Son of Ouzel Thorn with a British Blue. Cast heifers twice sold to 137.5ppk firstly from GA Haston & Son with a Montbeliarde and E Lund & Son with a Shorthorn heifer. All cast cows forward averaged 121ppk. Rearing Calves & Stirks Once again better weather comes on the Friday with many vendors catching grass when they can. An entry of only 35 calves and stirks forward this morning, comprising of manly continental calves and black and white stirks sold to a top of £280 on two occasions both for month old Blue heifers from J Bargh & Son, Heaton. Young Angus bulls from JE & J Pye, Quernmore sold to £232 with Herefords from J Hoggarth selling to £245. Stirks sold well with younger 5month black and whites realising £185 & £182 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Older stronger sorts from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal sold to £272 (x2) & £258 (x3). Once again many more calves could have been sold to a ring full of farmer buyers, eagerly looking for all classes.

NWA LANCASTER - Monday 9th June - Prime Stock Bumper entry of over 1300 Spring lambs forward sold to a strong trade Spring Lambs A strong entry of 1309 spring lambs forward averaging a very good 245ppk considering the numbers of lambs coming forward now. The top price of the week again came from Andy Wilson of Burrow Heights selling a heavy weight lamb to £124 with a Texel Cross and Suffolk lambs sold to £116 from WN & D Smith & Sons of Cockerhouse. Selling to a top price of 290ppk was EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands with a cracking Beltex lamb. First mules of the season seen it the market today from Jonathan Smith of Stanley Farm selling 35kg mules to £71.

Classes: 5 Suffolk Lambs. 5 Texel/Continental Lambs (Show Lambs to be penned by 8am ready for judging) Hoggs Hoggs continue to come forward in small numbers with decent well fleshed hoggs still selling around the £2 a kilogram mark topping at £96 from R Capstick & Son of Fell End farm with a Dalesbred.

Cast Ewes Cast sheep continue to sell to a firm trade at Lancaster with a plainer show on offer today at Lancaster as there was many ewes in that have been suckling lambs. Selling to a top price of £96 today from WG & E Sutcliffe of Lathwaithe Farm. Best mule ewes selling in and around the eighty pound mark with all mules forward today averaging £69. Prime Bulls A stronger entry of 19 bulls forward this week. Suckler bred continental bulls sold to a good trade at Lancaster with Black and white bulls continuing to be harder to place. A good Limousin bull from HR & KA Hodgson of Howriggs selling for 201.5ppk. Bulls sold to a top price of £1183.58 for a Limousin from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm. Black and white bulls sold to a top price of 121.5ppk from J & D Barton of Calcalds. Continental bulls averaged 166ppk with black and white bulls averaging 114ppk.

NWA J36 Crooklands - Tuesday 10th June Pigs, Sheep with Lambs at Foot & Prime Sheep North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36 Rural Auction Centre on Tuesday where some 1998 New Season Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep were put for sale to, once again, an increased ringside of buyers.

Prime Lambs topped at £126 for a pen of Charollais lambs from WS Burrow & Sons of Silverdale and to £96 & 189.2p/kg av. 176p/kg were purchased by Mr Michael Lomax. Top price per kilo was 274.30p/kg for a cracking pen 35kg Texel lambs shown by Richard Morphet of Halton with buyers keen to secure all weights of lambs and vendors drawing lambs at lighter weights to capitalise on the current strong trade. Please ensure lambs are fell finished. The 1424 New Season lambs averaged 245.04p per kilo and £94.80 per head. Cast Sheep Some 480 cast sheep were put before the usual compliment of buyers which saw a lot more leaner type ewes forward today which were a little easier on the week. However, good Continental ewes saw a strong trade and topped at £124 for a Texel ram from Fishwick Farms, Silverdale. Pigs North West Auctions held its monthly sale of Pigs at J36 with a strong entry of just over 100 pigs forward. Weaners sold to the best trade of the day with good Pietrain x weaners from AJ & ME Saggers selling to £78 with others from DC Miller of Cobble Hey selling white weaners to £56. Weaners regularly selling between £30 and £40. Fat pigs sold to a top price of £125 for a good Pietrain x gilt from AJ & ME Saggers. Good quality store pigs nearing finishing sold into the £90’s with smaller ones in the £70’s. Cast sows sold around the £70 mark. Sheep and Lambs A mixed show of sheep and lambs forward today with many people coming to the end of what they have to sell this season. Regular vendor Trevor Hodgson of Dillicar sold Mule hoggs with young Suffolk lambs to £172 with others from J & T Hunter of Moser Hill selling to £168. Aged Masham ewes with twins sold to £158 from R & RM Dent of Ashfield. Texel ewes with strong single lambs sold £155 from Michael Sykes of Rose Cottage.
