Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 Fortnightly Dairy Sale & Opening Sale of Store Lambs North West Auction J36 had 42 Dairy Cattle forward with 17 active purchasers and several leaving with empty trailers. New calved heifers twice sold at £2050 from JH Towers & Son and JG & BJ Escolme with a further three over £1900 from TH Gibson & Son, J & JA Burrow and JW & D Robinson & Sons. Cows peaked at £1850 for a fresh 3rd calver from H Wright & Sons. A special consignment of organic youngstock from J & PA Jackson sold to keen interest with In-calf heifers (due Nov) reaching £1400, bulling heifers selling to £960 and maiden heifers to £800. Statistics N/C Cows to £1850 av. £1665 N/C Heifers to £2050 av. £1755 I/C Heifers to £1400 av. £1085 Bulling Heifers to £960 av. £825 Maiden Heifers to £800 av. £720 The opening sale of Store Lambs was well attended by an abundance of purchasers competing for all types. First cross lambs also sold to £68 for Hampshire x from MA Grant with Suffolks £60 from GJ & CA Penellum who also sold Cheviots at £49.50. Hill bred lambs saw Mules sell to £55.50 from M & G German. EID Tagging All Sheep movements, including through market, will need to have their individual tag numbers recorded after 1st January 2015. This will include sheep born ‘pre EID’ regulations. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 8th August As good of show of Store Cattle as there has been seen at Lancaster for quite a while sold to a sharper trade with all classes of cattle in stronger demand. There was plenty of big well fleshed steers in the market selling to a top of £1300 from TE & A Galbraith of Crooklands Farm with a pair of Simmentals. Dereck Alderson of High Green Farm sold a trio of Limousin steers to £1280. An impressive 81 store cattle sold for £1100 or more. Heifers sold to a top price of £1170 from Tim Robinson of Rowell Farm with a 28 month old heifer. Younger cattle continue to sell well and are in strong demand at Lancaster as many vendors look to buy younger cattle to replace outgoing stores. A consignment from Brian and Freddie Lamb of Gardner’s Farm saw yearling Hereford steers sell to £680. The trade for Cast Cows continues to hold firm. Cows that are carrying flesh being a noticeably stronger trade with a lot of parlour and poor cows in the market today reflecting in the market average. OTM’s sold to a top price of 144.5ppk for Friesian steers from Andrew Clarkson of Cock Hall Farm and cast heifers sold to 139.5 for Montbeliarde heifers from GA Haston & Son of Lane House. Black and white cows sold to a top of 127.5ppk from EW & CR Clegg & Sons of Yew Tree Farm. Another nice entry of 52 Calves forward this morning with both new vendors and new buyers around the ring. A total of 15 active buyers saw all classes of calves well sold. Topping the trade was Stephen Birkett, Nether Kellet with a British Blue Bull selling to £405 at only 10 weeks old. Blue Bulls averaged £376 with blue heifers averaging £305. Close behind was JG & BJ Escolme, Killington with a Limousin Heifer selling to £395. Lim bulls sold to £380 from the same home with Lim bulls averaging £360. Angus calves sold to a top of £305 from Messers Wallbank, Abbeystead. Black and white calves sold to a slightly better trade, selling to £135 again from David and Eileen Wallbank with others to £130 from JT & B Fox, Quernmore. Best sorts sold in excess of £62. All black and whites forward averaged £45. Monday 11th August A larger entry of Prime Lambs forward of 1056 sold to a market average of 171ppk. Farmers are requested to please draw lambs on finish rather than weight as today it was extremely noticeable that buyers paying a premium for well finished lambs and it is to the farmer’s advantage to gain full potential for their lambs. Lambs sold to a top of 190ppk for lambs from J Lamb of Old Glasson. Top price of the day came from Joe Townley of Mearsbeck with a pen of Texel lambs weighing 44kg selling to £82. Cast Sheep sold to a noticeable stronger trade today with buyers keen to purchase ewes. The overall market average was £64. Buyers continue to look for fit ewes but are wary of buying fat ewes. Texel ewes sold to a top price of £93 from RD Lambert of Jacksons Farm with other continental ewes to £90 from David Whitaker of Stirzakers Farm. Mule ewes sold to £82 from TM Townley of Knowsley Farm with all Mule ewes averaging £64 and horned ewes sold to £52 from BD Gill of Yarlsber. The largest show of Prime Bulls forward today that has been seen for some while with 22 passing through the ring. NWA J36 Sale Reports Thursday 7th August Beef Breeding cattle sold to £1400 for AA x cows with Sim x calves from J Bindloss, Oxenholme with others at £1350. Store Cattle peaked at £940 for Lim x Heifer from J Moorhouse, Field Broughton with yearling Lim x steers at £875 from JH Barker, Haverthwaite. An entry of 83 Calves and Stirks forward today saw plenty of demand for beef bred calves but a lot of young Black and white bull calves forward sold to a sticky trade with a lot on the market at the moment. Calves sold to a top price of £450 for a cracking Simmental six week old bull from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield who also sold two more to £400. Two and a half month suckler bred Blonde steers sold to £390 from BL Swindlehurst of Low House. Heifer calves sold to £340 for a Limousin from Brian Wilson of Spout House who also sold a Limousin bull to £340. Best sorts of young Beef bull calves regularly sold around that £300 with beef bred heifer calves in the late £200’s. Better sorts of rearing black and white bulls sold to £98 with others around the £70 mark. Less Stirks about this week saw 10month old Friesian steers to £410. The monthly sale of Pigs saw all classes sell to full value with new buyers and sellers once again in attendance from the northern counties and Scotland. Prime Pigs (100kg-115kg) sold to £135 from DE Metcalfe with others generally £100/£115. A smart pen of Pietrain X Large White Weaners from AS Parnaby reached £80 with other white stores £73 from J H & E Ivinson. Younger coloured weaners generally £25 to £40.
