Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Monday 10th February 2025. Monday morning market once again sees sheep pens full and buyers keen to fulfil orders.

Prime Hoggs

The popular prompt Monday morning sale once again saw a weekly increase in number forward and prices achieved, with today’s sale averaging 348p/kg. The sale topped at £210 on several occasions for Beltex cross hoggs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Endless pens were £170 to £180 from J Twigge, Lindale, KA Purtill, Wigan, JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore and AG Butler, Hambleton. Well finished first cross hoggs were keenly competed for, selling to £168 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre and J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with others regularly £152 to £164. Pure hill bred hoggs sold to £168 for Cheviots from P Prickett, Hutton Roof who sold others at £158. Mashams sold to £151 from T&D Wright, Wray, Herdwick £148 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof and Mules £146 from M J R Standen, Lancaster. Lighter weight hoggs were once again keenly sort after, with continentals regularly £125 to £130, first cross £100 to £115 and hill bred £80 to £95.

The 400p/kg barrier was broken on several occasions from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore who sold Beltex to 402p/kg. Other well bred and well finished hoggs were 375p/kg to 395p/kg, first cross 348p/kg to 360p/kg, with standard weights in the keenest demand. Heavy weights sold to 362p/kg, with others generally 325p/kg to 340p/kg. Light weight hoggs sold to 345p/kg, with others generally 315p/kg to 330p/kg. Hill bred light weights hoggs were 280p/kg to 310p/kg.

Cast Ewes

After a fast and competitive sale of cull sheep, all vendors left the site feeling “ewe”phoric . The strongest ewes were regularly sailing past £200, topping at £236 on two occasions for pens of Texel cross from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with others to £228 from RM Gornall, Forton. Endless pens closely following at £185 to £200. Mules sold to a top of £182 again from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth with others to £180 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham, £178 from P Metcalfe, Quernmore and £174 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Medium Mules and first cross ewes were regularly £145 to £160, with the lighter weight leaners sorts £110 to £125. Several pens of pure hill ewes forward saw medium Swaledales to £92 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. All ewes forward today averaged £156.56.

Just a handful of cull rams sold to £180 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof, with others generally £140 to £160.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs, Prime Hoggs & Cast Sheep, Tuesday 11th February 2025. Pigs

100 pigs of all classes were in today, with prime pigs not quite at the levels of last sale.

Topping at £230 was a trio of gilts from PK&R Woof, Stainton with these also topping the pence per kilo at 219p. Sows sold to £160 from M Coxhead, Preston with lightweight boars to £125 from J&L Mallender, Skipton.

Stores and weaners continue to arrive in volume at Junction 36, with these selling to £86 for a pen of eight Pie Train weaners from M Coxhead, Preston.

Prime Hoggs

The prime sheep trade continues to delight.

An extremely strong trade yet again at Junction 36 shows no let up for the better end and well-fed types. A slight drop was witnessed for the lightest end of hoggs, in the 30kg-35kg range. Leaner and weathered types were also less than the previous couple of weeks. However fit and fed hoggs sold like hot cakes with as much demand as ever.

All the twos!! £222 was met twice for Texel hoggs from T Wilson, Selside and a continental hogg from RHMS Boyren, Ulverston. Many other pens sold over the £200 mark and a remarkable number of sheep today were over £190, including many Mules, topping at £197 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Kendal.

In specification and well fed hoggs were highly sought after from start to finish.

A nice pen of four 49kg sheep hit £194 or 389.8p/kg from Messrs Rogerson, Appleby. Lighter 40kg hoggs sold to £154 for a pen of seventeen Texels and a pair in-between at 45kg reached £173.

Lighter hoggs today topped at 372.2p/kg for six Texel from Messrs Colbear, Appleby. Eleven Cheviots at a similar weight reached 367.6p/kg, these were from AA Bentham, Dent.

An overall average of 331.21p/kg or £149 was achieved today, with numbers sold well up on the year and an ever increasing ringside of buyers.

Once again ewe numbers rising with over 800 genuine farmer ewes forward and all selling to an animated trade, with buyers competing for all classes and types. Best continentals were regularly £200 plus. Topping at £240 for Texels from PW&D Swindlehurst, Kendal with Suffolks to £225 from H Wilson, Selside.

Strongest first cross ewes were £180 plus, peaking at £208 from PJ&ES Rogerson, Appleby. Mediums were regularly £155 to £175 and the best of the smaller end £125 to £140. Mules sold to £160, with other heavies £150 plus. Mediums were £130 to £148 and smaller meated £110 to £125. Pure hill ewes sold to £185 for Cheviots, Herdwicks £138, Dalesbred £130, Rough Fells £128, SBF £112, Gritstone £110 and Swaledale £110. Other medium hill ewes were regularly £90 to £110, with lighter weights £65 to £80 and only the smallest and leanest less. 30 cull rams sold to £200 for continentals with mediums generally £160 to £185, hill rams sold to £165, with others £130 to £155 and leaner harder worked lads £90 to £110.

Breeding Sheep & Store Hoggs

Today’s sale of breeding sheep again generated a great deal of interest from both local and travelled buyers / spectators.

£300 was achieved for a pair of twin carrying Texels from RI Dixon, Low Newton. This home sold a run of very genuine mixed age Mules scanned at 200% to £275, £265 x2 and £255.

Swaledale ewes in lamb to the BFL from Nathan Allen, Winster sold to £170 x2.

Stores sold to £170 for Texel cross hoggs from JM&NS Strickland, Whinfell with best end hoggs regularly £140 upwards. Mid keep hoggs were regularly £110 to £135, with large amounts of small longer projects forward resulting in an overall average of £103.42.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle. Friday 14th February 2025.

Valentines’ day sees sparks fly in all three rings at Lancashire leading cattle market.

Calves & Weanlings- Calves and weaned stirks to £1570.

Today’s sale saw a decrease in numbers but another phenomenal trade.

Rearing calves sold to £590 for seven week old British Blues from Pickervance Farms, Kirkham with British Blues at the same age to £570 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Aberdeen Angus cross bull calves sold to £560 from T Foley, Bolton with the youngest sorts to £500 for British Blues from C&J Smith, St Michaels.

Heifer calves sold to £510 and £500 for British Blue from Pickervance Farms, Kirkham with Aberdeen Angus cross close behind at £450 from Wallbank Farms. Endless stronger heifers were £400 or more.

Weaned stirks sold to new highs of £1570 for a British Blue bull from AJ&DA Wilkinson, Out Rawcliffe. Other seven month old dairy bred British Blue bulls sold to £1100 from TD&A Gardner, Great Eccleston. Freshly weaned stirks sold to £750 for British Blue bulls from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh with Hereford to £600 from this consignment. Three very sweet British Blue heifers at three months old sold to £740, £680 and £600 from JM&MH France, Littledale with Aberdeen Angus at the same stage to £600 from I Richardson, Catforth. A fast-paced store cattle sale saw steers to £2380 for a Limousin from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with other Limousin to £2350 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton and Simmentals to the same price from J Lamb, Glasson and SH&LE Birkett, Carnforth. Endless pens of well grown steers were £2100 plus, with longer term feeding steers £1700 to £2050, and younger grazing types £1220 to £1500.

Heifers peaked at £2350 for a beef Shorthorn from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine closely followed by a pair of Charolais at £2300 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell. Other pens of stronger heifers were £1800 to £2050, with mediums £1600 to £1800 and younger grazing heifers £1100 to £1300.

Several feeding bulls forward saw the strongest to £2780 for a British Blues from AJ&DA Wilkinson, Out Rawcliffe with sixteen month olds to £1440 from V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole.

Cull cow trade continues to raise to previous unseen levels, with the best beef cows to 304.5p/kg and £3038 for a Charolais from GJ&G Billington, Garstang, Shorthorns to 289.5p/kg from A&V&A Thornton, Cockerham and British Blue cross to £2119 from EW&A Bradshaw, Stalmine. Other beef cows were regularly 250p/kg to 270p/kg. Heaviest well fleshed dairy cows sold to 249.5p/kg and £2008 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse with others at 244.5p/kg and £1919 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Other mediums were 220p/kg to 240p/kg and £1200 to £1500, with the lighter weight and leaner dairy cows generally 130p/kg to 170p/kg and £850 to £1100.
