NWA J36 - Thursday 10th July - Fortnightly Sale Strong Entry of Calves at J36 Fortnightly Sale Calves & Stirks Calves continue to come forward in strong number at J36 with an entry of 87. Plenty of beef calves in the market with a younger show on offer with not as many strong calves as we have sometimes seen. The trade twice sold to a top of £390 for British Blue bull calf from JW & TE Sharpe of Flodder Hall. Heifer calves sold to a top price of £365 for seven week old Limousin from Brain Wilson of Spout House. Best sorts of beef bull calves sold comfortable away into the £300’s with young beef bulls and plainer sorts in around the mid £200’s. Heifer calves sold to a strong trade especially heifers with cow making potential. All British Blue heifers forward today averaged £242. Black & Whites continue to be a similar trade with best sorts from ML & SM Dobson, Espford Farm selling to £120 & £118 with younger types between £58 and £65. A couple of Black and white Stirks forward today sold to £205. Please note change of Date for Summer Calf Show is now Thursday 24th July 2014 For more information contact Ian Atkinson 07766 521472 Cast Cows A smaller show of cast cows were put before the usual ringside of buyers and with buyers keen to secure cows for orders many more could have been sold. Black & White cows topped at 129.5p/kg from JW & D Robinson & Sons of Lupton with the majority being 110-120p/kg. Good Continental cows sold well and were short of buyers’ requirements topping out at 139.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from DJ & EA Park of Crook selling to Dawn Meats. Dairy An entry of 15 in milk new calved heifers and cows forward sold to a decent trade. Selling to a top price of £2120 was a pedigree heifer giving 34 litres from RW Bainbridge & Son of Outfield with Farm to Farm Trading others from the same home to £2,000. All black and white heifers in milk sold to an average of £1825. Second calved cows from Michael Carr of Clawthorpe Lodge sold to £1650 giving 43 litres. A consignment of new Wanted: calved Ayrshire heifers from Messrs Kirkby & Longworth was harder sold selling to £1220 twice. A couple of young stock forward today from J & BL 20-25 Yearling Dairy Heifers Ellis of Hawkrigg End saw an in calf heifer sold at £1100 and a bulling (pedigree/commercial) heifer to £940. Contact Matthew Probert Store Cattle A small quantity of just seven store cattle forward today all Simmental summering steers between 12 and 15 months old sold between £600 and £620. The top price came from Trevor Sharp of Gateside Farm selling to £620.

NWA LANCASTER - Friday 11th July - Weekly Sale Store Cattle Cattle beginning to come forward in larger numbers again at Lancaster with 179 passing through the ring selling a strong trade considering the current beef prices and a large quantity of black and whites and plainer sorts forward. The trade was topped by Robin Dodgson of Kilburn House selling a large Charolais steer to £1300. This was closely followed behind by John Bargh of Old Woodhouse selling a Charolais steer to £1270. There continues to be a good backing for native bred cattle in Lancaster with Hereford steers from TH Whitfield & Son of Longlands Farm selling to £1230 and a group of three Angus steers from Joe Davis to £1190. Heifers sold to a top price of £1100 for a pair of Limousins from of A & SM Sanderson of Mee Farm. Black and whites sold to a stronger with buyers looking for big rangey steers carrying plenty of meat. Friesian type two year old steers sold to £970 from EE Thornton & Son of Downlands. Congratulations to TGT & PJ Strickland of Grate Farm for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together. OTM and Cast Cattle A shortage of cast cows forward to meet buyer’s requirements sold to a sharper trade for all types of cow forward. The top price of the day came from J Birkett & Son of Fanny House Farm selling Montbeliarde steers to 144.5ppk. Cast cows sold to a top price of 139.5ppk from MJ Hill of The Dell with a Blonde. Cast black and white heifers sold to 129.5ppk from WB Winder & Co of Wall End Farm with cows to 124.5ppk from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands. Cast cows sold to an average of 112ppk. Calves An entry of 30 calves forward today sold to a sensible trade considering the current beef market. The sale was topped by Clive and Liam Baxter of New Brows Farm selling two and a half month Limousin bull calves to £330 and £302. A consignment of Angus’s from JB & JB Lawson of Bank End Farm sold to a top price £298 for heifers at 2month old with younger angus bull calves from Wallbanks at Tills Farm selling £270. Black and whites sold to £90 from WN & D Smith of Cocker House.

Prime Lambs A few less lambs forward this week in comparison with last, with 1347 forward for sale. On the whole, trade was as expected averaging 173ppk, 10ppk better than midweek last week. Better quality lambs were realising a premium and in demand with good lambs selling in excess of 180ppk with quality lambs selling above 190ppk.Trade was topped by A & FM Bolland, Yeat House, Ellel with a Heavy weight Texel selling to £88. Top price per kilo was 194ppk from Frank Towers, Wray with a pen of 7 smart 40kg Beltex lambs. Mule lambs sold to £68 for 43kg from BD Gill, Ingleton. Cast Sheep Double the numbers of cast ewes forward this morning with 216 passing through the ring. Cast sheep are still in strong demand selling to a top of £110 from ST Birket, Carnforth with a Suffolk Tup, followed by Frank Towers with a Texel ewe to £102. Mule ewes sold to £78 on two occasions from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and CA & J Alty, Waton. Overall sale average of £67.63. Prime Bulls An entry of 11 prime bulls this morning sold to a similar trade to the previous week. Topping the sale at 179.5ppk was a 570kg British Blue from JS & KM Wilson & Son, Natland. Top overall was £1123 with a heavy weight Hereford bull (805kg) from J & F Nutter, Clitheroe. Only two Friesians forward this morning sold to 131.5ppk again from Msrs Wilson.

NWA J36 Crooklands - Tuesday 8th July North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep at J36 Rural Auction Centre on Tuesday where a huge show of 2609 sheep comprising 2024 prime lambs and 585 cast sheep were put before the usual compliment of buyers.

Well fleshed lambs were in strong demand, whilst leaner sorts were harder to sell. The smarter end of the lambs were 190-195p/kg whilst commercial first cross Suffolk and Continental lambs were regularly 175-185p/kg. The top price today was £81 per head for Texel x lambs shown by Matson Ground Farms of Windermere. A massive show of cast sheep were sold to a full ringside of buyers who bid strongly to secure sheep, ensuring a huge increase in price of some £10-£15 per head on the week. Ewes topped at £122 per head for Texel x from E & K Bland of Cotegill. Stephen Bland also sold the top priced Horned ewes at £87 per head for a big pen of Rough Fells purchased by Mr A Shan. Overall cast sheep prices would truly exceed all vendors expectations
