NWA Lancaster Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 21st July North West Auctions Lancaster held the monthly dairy sale this morning with an increased number of new and regular vendors in attendance. Judging was in the capable hands of Bob Lawrence, Grange over Sands who had a very strong show of cattle put before him. Overall champion was awarded to P Knowles, New Hutton, with Kendallcragg Lavenguard Julie, after taking first place in the non-halter led heifer class. Sold giving 27litres and being 21days calved, she reached a final call of £2780 selling to regular purchaser ME Wannop & Sons Ltd. Reserve Champion was awarded to MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore with Wyredale Steady Queenmary 11, bred from three generations of VG & EX cows, she sold for £2450, 21days calved, giving 36 litres to RT Halhead, Norbreck Farm, Cockerham. Complete sale clearance saw 15 heifers sell in excess of £2000 with an average of £1852, including three quartered and lesser sorts. Cows sold to an average of £1695.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 18th July Store Cattle The numbers of store cattle coming forward on a Friday continue to increase with over 250 cattle passing through the ring. Cattle carrying flesh sold to an increased demand from buyers and looked a sharper trade. Topping the sale was a British blue steer from J & M Cottom of Hill Top selling to £1300 with a big Angus steer from Ray Escolme of Ivy Barn selling for £1260. Heifers topped at £1140 for a British Blue from R & J Dodgson of Cracalt Farm. An eleven month old Limousin bull fit for breeding from the Ayrton family at Ouzelthorn sold to £1100. There was an impressive 93 of the cattle forward achieved £1,000 or more with all steers forward selling to an average £892 and heifers averaging £868. Congratulations to P & EM Mason of Spital Farm for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together. OTM and Cast Cattle A larger show of cows forward this week saw learner cows selling to a sharper trade with the trade for fleshier cows slightly back on the week. An entry of sixty cows this week with the majority parlour cows. Cows sold to 154.5ppk for a good Limousin from JE Bracken of New House Farm. Meaty beef bred cows sold in the 130’s and early 140’s with dairy cows selling to a top price of 124.5ppk for a black and white from JC & E Mason of Lawrence House. Plenty of dairy cows sold between 110ppk and 120ppk with the overall sale average 114ppk with dairy cows averaging 105ppk. Rearing Calves & Stirks A solid entry of 67 calves and stirks this morning were met by a ring side of buyers. Topping the calf trade was AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels with a Blue Bull selling to £370, also from the same home was the top price Blue heifer selling to £325. Angus Bulls sold to a top of £260 (x2) from Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead. Lim bulls sold to a top of £240 from JR Pye, Hatters Farm. Black and White calves were in demand this morning with best rearing calves selling to £128 again from AJ & AJ Gibbons with others at £120 from Wallbank Farms, WN & D Smith & Sons and JM Capstick. Best B&W’s regularly £90+ with plainer sorts £30-£65. A good entry of striks saw British Blue Heifers sell to £400 from A Shephard, Pilling. Monday 21st July Prime Lambs sell 12p up on the week as Cast ewes continue to be a strong Trade Prime Lamb A show of good quality lambs forward at Lancaster sold to an average of 184ppk, 12 pence up on the week. A bigger sale entry of 1970 lambs were met by an active ringside of buyers keen to purchase lambs. It was Drinkall Bros of Catshaw Hall farm that topped the sale selling heavy weight Texel lambs to £97. A pen of seven Beltex lambs from Daniel Towers of Curwen Hill sold to the top of 204ppk or £81.50. Pens of better sorts of Texel lambs sold into the late 190ppk and around 200ppk with Suffolk lambs regularly selling in the mid 180ppk. Mules sold to a top of £75 from Fred Woodhouse of Fell End with all mules forward averaging 171ppk. Cast Sheep A strong trade for cast ewes at Lancaster with a bumper entry of 259 forward. Buyers looking to buy fit ewes but were reluctant on over fat ewes. Continental ewes topped at £108 from Percy Rossall of Stonehead with plenty of big fit ewes selling between £95 and £105. Mules sold to a top price of £90 from S Wilson & Son, Burrow Heights with pens of mules that have been suckling lambs regularly in and around the £70 mark. Horned ewes sold to a top of £51 from J & CW Metcalfe & Son of Hare Apple Tree. Prime Bulls There was a smaller entry of five bulls this morning, selling to a top of 167.5ppk for a 700kg Limousin from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Friesians sold to 129.5ppk from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. NWA J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 22nd July A Record Entry of Sheep At J36

NWA J36 had forward the largest entry of prime sheep forward with 3735 selling to a full ringside of buyers. Well finished pure and ¾ bred Prime Lambs commanded a premium reaching 197p/kg for Beltex x lambs from SW Huck with Char x lambs from CC & HM Roberts selling for £88 it most generally 185p/kg – 195p/kg. First cross Suffolk and Texel lambs sold to 189p/kg from R & E Ladds and £82 from DE & SM Moorhouse. Mule weathers are now coming forward in greater numbers selling to 178p/kg from J & AJ Coates & Son and £77 from RS Harker & Son. All weights of lambs were keenly competed for with buyers attending with orders to fill. A bumper entry of 1168 Cast Sheep saw heavy ewes and meated mules continue to sell to the recent high levels peaking at £118 for Texels from J & M Wilson and PK & R Woof with plenty £90-£108. Mules sold to £79 (averaging £61) with hill ewes to £72 for Rough Fell from I Carradice, Swaledales £62 from JS & S Atkinson and Cheviots for £89. Recently weaned and plainer hill ewes in abundance today being harder to sell. All cast sheep today averaged £53.45. Top p/kg
