NWA LANCASTER - Friday 20th June - Weekly Sale Store Cattle Weekly sale of store cattle at Lancaster saw a reduced entry with farmers making the most of the weather. It was noticeable that all classes of cattle were a sharper on the week. With best sorts selling to a premium. Topping todays market was a Hereford Steer selling to £1280 from AJ & D Knowles, Windy Hill. This was closely followed by a pair of Angus Steers from Redmayne Bros, Samlesbury realising £1260. Angus heifers sold to a top of £1140 with British Blues to £1110. Overall buyers are still looking for cattle and averages came in at £980 for steers and heifers averaging £899. Cast Cows A small entry of cast cows forward this morning were met by a strong trade. Trade was topped by J Whitton of Rocklands with a Limousin Cow selling to 157.5ppk. Blue cows sold to a top of 144.5ppk on two occasions from R & B Parker and JG & PH Thompson. Black and Whites sold to a top of 137.5ppk from WN & D Smith, Cockerham with a cast heifer while black and white cows sold to a top of 131.5ppk from JM & JI Pye, Cabus. In all, black and white cast cows averaged 115.5ppk and an overall OTM average of 127ppk. Calves & Stirks Just 28 calves forwards this morning with the vast majority being good sorts. Trade was topped by JB & JB Lawson, Cockerham with an Angus Bull selling to £350 with another realising £325. Angus heifers from the same home sold to £285. A cracking show of blue calves saw bulls sell to £320 & £300 from Joylan Farms with heifers from the same home selling to £310. Young Limousin Bulls sold to £200 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne. Simmental calves sold to £210 for Bulls from D & A Travis, Newbiggin. Black and White calves were a strong trade selling to £122 from CG Birkett, Carnforth and £108 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Abbeystead. All Black and White calves averaged £79/head. Stirks sold to £455 for a Blue Bull from A & FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and Black and White bulls from Mesrs Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal selling to £240 (x2). Buyers were slightly cautious with regards to the current beef price and calves sold in line with other competitor markets.

NWA LANCASTER - Monday 23rd June - Prime Stock Strong Trade at Lancaster Continues for Spring Lambs Prime Lambs A good show of quality lambs forward today in Lancaster with well fleshed meaty lambs selling to a premium today. A smaller entry of 1178 forward today sold to an SQQ average of 218ppk. Best lambs sold to 245ppk for Beltex X lambs from Mark Townley of Claughton Hall with other better sorts to 241ppk from Andrew Clarkson of Cock Hall and JM Sanderson of Lower Highfield. Lambs sold to a top price per head of £118 for Heavy weights from William Pye of Tarnwater. Buyers are requesting that lambs are farm assured with a noticeable premium being paid today for farm assured lambs.

Cast Sheep The trade for cast sheep seem slightly easier today as there becomes more ewes on the market. The trade topped today at £104 for Texels from Brian Preston of Ellers Farm with all Texel and cross ewes averaging £82. Mule ewes sold to a top of £77 from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands averaging £67 per head. Horned ewes sold to a top of £60 for Kendal Roughs from Gary Postlethwaite of Riddings. Prime Bulls A larger show of bulls forward today at Lancaster sold to a strong trade considering the current market, with the eight bulls forward today averaging 155ppk. Beef bred Limousin bulls sold to a top price of 183.5ppk from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm with others from the same home selling to 181.5ppk. Beef bred dairy bulls sold to a top of 179.5ppk from E & N Wright & Son of Allcocks Farm with Black and Whites from the same home selling to 139.5ppk.

NWA J36 Crooklands - Tuesday 24th June North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock on Tuesday where some 2,233 prime lambs and cast sheep were sold to a full ringside of buyers who bid strongly for all classes. Lambs topped at £120 per head for Suffolk x lambs from Messrs Ladds of Benson Hall selling to Paul Barker for Bowood Yorkshire Lamb. Commercial Suffolk & Texel cross lambs were regularly 215 – 225p/kg with smarter sorts 230 – 240p/kg, as long as lambs were well finished buyers were keen to purchase all weights and with the onset of the Muslim festival of Ramadan at the end of the week the Muslim firms were particularly strong.

Once again a large entry of 560 cast sheep were forward with the trade continuing on from the lambs to see strong demand for all classes of sheep with a lot more plain ewes forward today. A top price of £110 per head was achieved twice, firstly for a pen of Texel x ewes from G & ID Postlethwaite of Howgill and then for a Charollais ewe from Mr GH Bell of Kirkby Lonsdale. Mule ewes to £88 with the majority £75 - £85 Swaledale ewes to £71 per head for a big pen of ewes from the Inman Family of Witherslack with plainer sorts looking a good trade at £45-£55 per head.
