NWA J36 - Thursday 26th June - Fortnightly Sale Fortnightly Sale of Rearing Calves & Stirks, Dairy Cattle, Store Cattle, Cast/Feeding Cows, OTM & Clean Cattle. The sale of Cast / Feeding Cows, OTM & Prime Cattle saw a market average of 118p/kg for an entry of predominantly dairy cows. Beef cows sold to 129.5p/kg for Limousin x from D & B Walker and £826 for BRB x from JG & PH Thompson. Dairy cows peaked at 127.5p/kg from RJ & KR Wilkinson and £1050 from KJ Knight. Prime cattle sold to 164.5p/kg / £1114 for Limousin x steers and heifers from TS & SM Park. A strong entry again of 87 calves and stirks forward at J36 saw calves sell to a continued strong trade with old and new faces around the ring today keen to purchase all types of calves. The sale topper today was a suckler bred seven week old Limousin Bull calf from Ian Little of Helm Croft selling for £510. A consignment of British Blue calves from JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall saw Bulls sell to £425 and heifers to £420 and £395. Best sorts of Beef bull calves sold over the £300 with good heifers into the late £200’s. Black and whites sold to a stronger trade with a lot forward best sorts sold into the late eighties with growing calves in the sixties. There was a good backing of stirk buyers around the ring today with dairy bred British Blue bulls from Mrs H Ellison of Low Greaves selling to £550 and Limousins to £470 from Ian Little of Helm Croft. Black and white bull stirks at five months old sold to £260 from B Butterfield & Son of Moss House Farm. Cows with Calves at Foot sold to £1450, £1380 from R & RM Dent with buyers keen to secure replacement stock. Yearling store heifers reached £730 for Limousin x from JH Barker with younger types £600 / £640. Another good entry of dairy cattle including several new vendors attracted a crowd of competitive buyers, again with new purchasers ringside. The sale peaked at £2200 for a Galastar Bluesky sired heifer from WH & JM Robinson with W & CW Dent selling a Shottle sired heifer at £1980 and E & K Bland selling a Homeland Goldfinger heifer also at £1980. An entry of cows saw fresh fourth calved cows sell to £1220. Next fortnightly sale will be held on Thursday 10th July (entries for catalogue close Thursday 3rd July)

NWA LANCASTER - Friday 27th June - Weekly Sale Store Cattle A larger show of 155 store cattle forward at Lancaster today sold to a stronger trade with the quality of cattle on show better. The trade topped at £1380 from R Escolme of Ivy Barn selling a named sired Hereford steer. Best sorts easier to sell with plenty of big steers regularly selling over £1100. Heifers topped at £1200 for Herefords from AJ & D Knowles of Windy Hill. Buyers continue to look for animals batched in large groups with a trio of Angus steers from Joe Davies at Weavers Farm. Black and whites sold to a slightly brighter trade. Congratulations to Brian Wood of Middle Ridge Farm for winning the prize draw of a £15 lunch voucher for lotting four or more cattle together. OTM and Cast Cattle A plainer entry of OTM cattle forward today lead to a slightly easier trade with a good entry of 71 forward. The trade topped at 154.5ppk for a cast Fleckvieh heifer from Norbreck Genetics with Cast cows topping at 149.5 for a Limousin from AR Edmondson of Hawkswell. Beef bred cattle reguarly exceeded 135ppk with good dairy cows selling between 117ppk and 130ppk and plainer sort over a pound with overall average for cast cows 111ppk. Calves A good number of calves forward this morning, made up of mainly black and whites with continental calves short of buyers requirements. Black and White calves sold to a top of £130 from regular vendor David Wallbank. Best sorts sold in excess of £100 with good well fleshed calves £48-£85. Topping trade was Phillip Halhead of Cockerham, selling a 38day Blue Bull to £380. A 7 week Simmental from D & A Travis. Limousins sold to £315 for bulls from CR & A Baxter, New Brows Farm, Limousin heifers from the same home sold to £365 with British Blue Heifers selling to £360 again from David Wallbank. Congratulations once again to Phillip Halhead of Norbreck Farm, winning the monthly calf competition sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition, receiving 6 bags of feed. This monthly competition is open to all calves under 42days and awarded to the highest price calf of the month.

NWA LANCASTER - Monday 30th June - Prime Stock Strong Trade at Lancaster Continues for Spring Lambs 1202 Prime Lambs to £113& 235.0p/kg Prime Lamb The trade continues to hold strong at Lancaster for prime lambs with the overall average of 215ppk. There was another strong entry of just over 1200 lambs forward. As Weights Top Av. Standard 32 ½ -39 235.0 216.0 always plenty of good well fleshed lambs on offer which were good to sell with a few pens of Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 233.0 216.0 plainer lambs forward just pulling the sale average back. It was lambs full of meat that buyers Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 222.0 206.5 were looking for today with leaner lambs being penalised. The trade topped at £113 for a couple of 51kg lambs from JH Gardner of Moss Cottage. Lambs sold to a top of 235ppk for a pen of 10 Charollais x lambs from David Whitaker of Stirzakers Farm selling to £91.50. This was closely followed by Malcolm Lund at 234ppk with Andrew Clarkson and Mark Townley at 233ppk. Suffolk Lambs sold to £95 from TE Kidd of Booth Hall with plenty of pens of best sorts of Suffolk’s selling over £90. Mules starting to come forward now with 37kg lambs from JS & S Atkinson of Sykes Farm selling to £77.

Cast Sheep The trade for cast sheep was better than expected considering the start of Ramadan. There were less numbers forward, however all types selling to a similar trade. Cast sheep sold to a top price of £116 for a Texel ewe from Stephen Hill of The Dell with cast Tups selling to £114 from David & Linda Dickinson of 14 Prime Bulls to 180.5p/kg, £1319.46 Top Av. Bay View. Best sorts of continental ewes sold into the £90’s with others in the £80’s. Mule ewes sold Class Prime 180.5 167.2 regularly in the £70’s, topping at £98/head from J Lamb, Old Glasson. Prime Bulls There was another entry in the double figures of bulls today in Lancaster with a mixture of types forward. Bulls sold to a top price of 180.5ppk or £1319 for a Limousin Bull from JM & AG Swarbrick of Bensons Farm with British Blue bulls from S & BM Lawrence & Son of Northwoods Farm selling to 177.5ppk. Beef bred bulls sold to an average 162ppk with a show of Holsteins bulls selling to 118.5ppk averaging 117.5ppk.

NWA J36 Crooklands - Tuesday 1st July North West Auctions held their weekly sale of prime stock at J36 on Tuesday. A huge show of 1955 Prime Lambs to £99 & 238.5p/kg some 2300 prime lambs and cast sheep were put before the usual ringside of buyers. Lambs Weights Top Av. topped at £99 per head for Texel x’s from J & J Postlethwaite of Bramaskew and the top price Standard 32 ½ -39 238.5 200.6 per kilo was 238.5p/kg for a cracking pen of Beltex x lambs from Richard Morphet of Halton. Medium 39 ½ -45 ½ 209.8 197.0 Heavy 46 - 51 ½ 212.8 200.0 Also worthy of a mention was a pair of Pure Zwartable lambs from young Dan Crowe of Witherslack which sold for £93 per head to Andrew Atkinson. With bigger numbers of lambs on the market throughout the country, trade was easier on the week but we still managed to hold onto a very respectable overall average of 198.35p/kg with all classes and weights of lambs being sought after. A much smaller show of cast sheep were forward and even though the Muslim festival of Ramadan has begun, cast sheep met an outstanding trade topping at £120 for a pair of Cheviot rams from John Handley of Whinfell. Continental ewes regularly £95 to £110. Mules to £92 with plenty £75 - £85 per head. Once again Horned ewes met a strong trade with Rough Fell ewes £79 and Swaledales to £75.
