NWA J36 Dairy Sale & Calf Show Thursday 24th July Dairy Sale Newly Calved Heifers to £2120 Newly Calved Cows to £1900 Heifer Calves to £445 With the largest entry to date, incorporating a part dispersal of organic cows on behalf of J & P A Jackson, a large crowd of buyers were in attendance from throughout the northern counties. The dispersal sale saw mid-lactation 2nd calved cows sell to £1600, £1580, with older cows generally £1200/£1450. The fortnightly collective sale was topped by a heifer from J H towers & Sons, selling at £2120, with others £1900 J & J A Burrow and £1850 W H & J M Robinson. Newly calved cows sold to £1900 from P W & D Swindlehurst with 4th calvers £1520 from M & M Carr. A special entry of heifer calves from Langley Park Farms saw 12 w.o. calves sell to £445, £425, £420 with an abundance of buyers keen to purchase additional youngstock.

Calf Show & Sale

The summer show and sale of calves at J36 Rural Auction centre saw a record entry of 112 Class 1 – Continental Bull forward. Stuart Benn of Beckside Cottage was handed the task of judging a tremendously strong class of calves and a credit to all vendors. A strong class of continental bulls 60 days or 1st Lot 480 from FI & ME Little £400 under was won by Ian Little of Helm Croft showing a Limousin Bull with the Continental heifer 2nd Lot 451 from B Wilson £370 class being won by David Wallbank of Tills Farm showing a British Blue heifer. In the dairy bull 3rd Lot 492 from H Wright & Son £350 class was a strong pen of bulls with the winner being awarded to Robin Nicholson of Green Lane End Farm with a Montbeliarde bull. The overall champion was awarded to Ian Little with Class 2 – Continental Heifer his Limousin Bull Calf. The trade saw all types of continental calves sell to a strong trade with plenty of buyers eager to 1st Lot 533 from Wallbank Farm Ltd £320 buy. The trade for better quality black and whites was back quite a bit in line with other markets 2nd Lot 452 from B Wilson £300 with worst sorts of black and whites in strong demand and a dearer trade. 3rd Lot 510 from B & MJ Nelson £300 The top price calf of the day was the Champion from Ian Little selling to £400 to the Judge Stuart Benn. This was matched by C Dean & LJ Brennand of Clapham selling a 65 day old Class 3 – Dairy Bull British Blue bull to £400 with other best sorts of Continental bulls selling in mid to late £300’s. Continental Heifers sold to £320 for the 1st prized heifer from David Wallbank of Tills Farm with 1st Lot 505 from RJ & P Nicholson £250 a strong demand for people looking for potential breeding replacements. 2nd Lot 528 from Drinkall Bros £65 A good entry of farmer stirks forward meant a strong demand from a ringside of buyers with 3rd Lot 529 from Drinkall Bros £60 plenty could have been sold to vendor’s advantage. Limouisn steers at 10month old from R & BJ Cleasby sold to £655 with heifers from the same home to £510. Four month old Limou- Champion Lot 480 from FI & ME Little sin heifer stirks from Fishwick Brothers of Middle Sadghyll sold to £450 and £430. NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 25th A nice show of Store Cattle today saw 261 pass through the ring, once again well fleshed cattle sold to the vendors advantage. JM & AG Swarbrick & Son, Out Rawcliffe topped trade selling a Lim steer to £1290. British Blues sold to £1240 from regular vendor J & M Cottam, Nether Kellet. Heifers topped at £1210 for Chaollais from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton. Black and Whites were met by a mixed trade topping at £1210 again from J & M Cottam with others at £940 from EE Thornton & Son, Downlands. An entry of 46 Cast Cows this morning was met by a ringside of buyers. Trade was topped by J & AJ Coates & Son, Westhouse with a Luing Heifer selling to 141.5ppk. Friesian heifers sold to 139.5ppk from WN & D Smith & Son, Cockerham. Black and White cows sold to 127.5ppk from K Whitaker & Son, Bay Horse. An entry of 49 Rearing Calves and Stirks this morning. Black and whites met a very sticky trade with best sorts to £80 from GH Sanderson, Catforth. Trade was topped by Phillip Halhead, Cockerham with a cracking 40day British Blue bull selling to £410 with another from the same home selling to £405. Angus bulls from W & G Cornthwaite & Son, Claughton on Brock sold to £300. Younger rearing calves sold to £288 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne for Blue bulls and £252 for Angus Heifers from the same home. Stirks from A Shephard, Pressall sold to £530 for Blue Heifers. The early Breeding Sheep sale saw all classes of sheep sell to a strong trade with a strong demand from buyers around the ring plenty more could have been sold. Mule gimmer shearlings sold to £150 JM & F Gillett of Mellor with Scotch Mule shearlings from T Smith of Pilling selling to the same price with plenty of pens selling into the £140’s. Texel shearlings sold to £148 for a pen from Chris Alty of Carnforth with other pens of continental shearlings selling around that £140 mark. Mule ewes sold to a strong trade with plenty of buyers around the ring for all ages, one crop ewes sold to £145 from Andrew Bailey of Cornfield house with full mouthed ewes from Mark Parker of Wennington selling to £101. Continental ewes sold to £142 twice firstly from Andrew Butler of Hambleton and then from Andrew Bailey. A couple tups forward today saw a Suffolk shearling from Will Alexander sell to £380. Monday 28th July North West Auctions Lancaster saw 1319 sheep pass through the ring this morning, comprising of 1171 prime lambs and 148 cast sheep. Quality lambs and lambs with meat were sought after however the onset of the Muslim festival of EID saw Asian buyers missing from the market as they don’t start killing till Wednesday, making leaner lambs a fractional easier.

Trade topped at £89 for a heavy weight Texel Prime Lamb weighing 56kg or 186ppk for a pen of 6 37kg Texels from W Pinder Jnr, Newton in Bowland, best lambs sold in excess of 180ppk with an overall market average of 163ppk. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of 171ppk from A & E Clarkson Ltd, Thurnham. Mules from D France, Over Wyresdale and JR & J Gorst, Quernmore sold to 150ppk or £63/head. Trade was slightly easier for Cast Sheep this week with a number of fatter ewes forward, however still a reasonable trade. Ewes sold to a top of £86 for Texels from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Suffolks sold to a top of £72 from ST Birkett, Carnforth and Mules to £64 from WJ Barker, Arkholme and RI Wilson, Scotforth. Swale ewes sold to £32 from M & L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Overall average of £57 for all forward. Nine Prime Bulls forward this morning, JS & KM Wilson & Soon, Natland topped the sale with a 600kg+ British Blue selling to 181.5ppk. Limousin bulls sold to 176.5ppk from P Cummings, Carnforth with Montbelliardes selling to 149.5ppk from GA Haston & Son, Galgate.

Tuesday 29th July North West Auctions had 2087 prime sheep forward at its weekly sale on Tuesday with 11 active buyers ringside competing for all classes and categories of sheep.

A pleasing market average of 169p/kg was achieved with well finished lambs regularly 170p/kg – 180p/kg topping at 192p/kg for Beltex x lambs from AE Atkinson & Son. Lambs sold to a top price of £81 per head from R & B Parker. First cross Texel/Suffolk lambs regularly 165 – 170p/kg & £70-£76 with Mules from CP Bateman reaching £71. Cast sheep sold to prices above expectation with strong meated ewes £80 - £95, medium ewes £66/£78 with ewes generally £40-£56 Top Prices per kilo:
