Weekly report & newsletter NWA J36 Texel Sale on behalf of NWTBC Texels sell to 1450gns at North West Evening Sale The annual evening show & sale of Texel’s on behalf of the North West Breeders held at NWA J36 saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr G Wilkinson (Arkle) who had a very strong line up before him in each of the three show classes. The Championship rosette was awarded to the first prize lamb Stainton Vendetta from PK Woof, Kendal. Sired by Anglezarke Uno and with an index of 328 he later sold to HF & FI Woodmas, Linstock. The reserve champion was a ram lamb Sportsman’s Van Basten from Boden & Davies Ltd, sired by Milnbank ur the Boy and later selling to RE Ladds, Kendal. The sales top price of 1450gns was paid for a gimmer shearling from the Stainton flock of PK Woof, sired by Sportsman Tremendous II purchased by S W Boow, Millom. A further two gimmers shearling reached 1000gns being from the Kaker Mill Flock of J Robinson and the Ettrick flock of G Gray. The ram lamb sale saw 800gns achieved for the show champion with A & G Brown selling Brookhill Viceroy 2 also achieving 800gns. Shearling rams rose to 800gns for Tatham Hall Uncle Doit from Procters Farm LTD purchased by TC Altham, Kirkby Lonsdale with PK Woof selling a sportsman sired ram also at 800gns to P&J Wilson, Westhouses. A consignment of Blue Texels from the renowned Millside flock of D Alexander saw gimmer shearlings sell to 500gns.

NWA Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 29th August 651 Head of Cattle Meet a Strong Trade at Weekly Lancaster Sale There was 462 Store Cattle pass through the ring at Lancaster selling to a strong trade for all sorts with some plainer cattle on show especially some plainer black and white steers. There was plenty of cattle selling between £1100 and £1300 with the top price of the day came from Cowell & Moore of Woodplumpton selling a Charolais bullock to £1370. Angus and Native Cattle continue to be keenly sort after at Lancaster with Angus steers from TN Pye & Partner of Langthwaite selling to £1300 and Herefords from JJ Penington, Whitechapel selling to £1260. The annual consignment of 35 Lim bullocks and heifers from Nether Hall Farms saw bullocks sell to £1230 and heifers to £1200. Heifers sold to a top price of £1250 again coming from Cowell & Moore of Woodplumpton with a pen of four Charolais. All classes of Cast Cows sold to a sharper trade with an average of 116.43ppk with a strong entry of 83. Cull cows sold to a top price of 159.5ppk for a British Blue from R & B Parker of High Hallbeck. Top price per head was achieved by JJ Penington, Whitechapel with a Sim cow selling to £1122. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 139.5ppk and sold to an average of 107ppk. C Hargreaves & Son, sold a cast Friesian heifer to 141.5ppk. Cast steers sold to a top price of 144.5ppk from Andrew Clarkson of Cock Hall Farm. A bumper entry of Calves and Stirks this morning with 102 passing through the ring. Trade in the calf section was topped by Jones of Sandvilla with a British Blue Bull at £400, another sold from the same home to £380. A nice run of Angus and Lim calves from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall Hall sold to £330 for Angus Bulls and £300 for Lim Bulls. Also at this money was a smart Hereford calf from Mason’s at Birkland Barrow. Blue heifers from DW Cottam, Hagg Farm sold to £280 & £275. Black and Whites sold to £165 for a well-shaped 28day old Friesian from J & EV Thompson of Hood Ridding. Best sorts sold £95-£138 with well fleshed calves selling between £50-£85 dependant on size. Younger sorts £20-£35. Nice to see a number of new and returning vendors and buyers around the calf ring this morning. The August Dugdale Nutrition calf competition was won by T & CM Kelsall of Brown Brook, receiving 6 bags of feed courtesy of Dugdales, Ken sold a smart 33day old British Blue Bull realising £445. A good entry of stirks this morning sold to a top of £520 for a 5month Lim Heifer from JR & A Thornton, Winmarleigh. A run of 3-4month Angus bulls and heifers from Jones of Sandvilla sold to £375 (x3) for bulls and £340 & £335(x3) for heifers. Friesian bulls sold to £240 (x2) from the same home. Monday 1st September A big entry of 1591 Prime Lambs this morning sold to a similar trade to last week, averaging 159ppk. Trade topped at 173ppk from K Purtill, Wigan with a pen of 5 Texels. Top price per head was achieved by H Birkett & Son, Overton with a heavy weight Suffolk making £94. Mules regularly sold between £64 - £66.50, with heavy mules selling to £73 from FA Nowell & Partners, Mewith. Once again lambs between 39kg & 43kg were keenly sought after, best Texel sorts sold to £72 for a pen of 6 42kg lambs from JK & BE Townley, Mearsbeck. Short keep lambs generally £56-59, medium £52-£55 with an overall overage of £55.85. NWA J36 Sale Reports Saturday 30th August - Poultry & Rare Breeds The annual autumn sale of rare and minority breed livestock saw a wide variety of breeds of both cattle and sheep forward with buyers in attendance from far and wide. The sale of cattle sale registered red poll cows and calves sell to £980 with incalf cows £800 and bulling heifers £600. Highland yearling heifers reached £440. The sheep sale saw Kerry hill gimmer shearlings sell to £142 with others £130. Zwartble ewes reached a top price of £130. Gimmer lambs saw Zwartbles achieve £80, Kerry Hill £65 and Hebrideans £32. Jacob ram lambs achieved £78 with aged black welsh mountain £55. The sale of poultry saw £72 paid for Sebastopol Geese, £60 for a trio of Silver Layced Wyandottes, a pair of White Wyandottes achieved £60 with Apricot Call Ducks £52.

On Monday 1st September, Mr Paul Slater, Whiteley Hey flock, held his 13th Annual Production sale under the roof of a new venue J36 Rural Auction Centre (NWA) in conjunction with Mitchells Livestock Auction, Cockermouth. Auctioneer Mr John Wharton having the pleasure of the rostrum duties. Many old and new customers were present for Paul’s consignment of 128 Shearling rams, 40 2 & 3 shear ewes, 100 shearling gimmers and 142 gimmer lambs which were of the usual outstanding quality possessing great breed characteristics, carcase and skin. Buyers from as far South as Cornwall and North as Aberdeen travelled to witness and bid for some outstanding sheep Top price of the sale was 2100gns for a shearling ram which sold as lot 43 he is by a Garngour tup, out of a Langside bred ewe and was purchased by CJ Roots from Dumfries. A further 21 rams broke the 1000gns mark with a consistently strong trade. NWA J36 Sale Reports Tuesday 2nd September LARGE ENRTY OF 3525 PRIME SHEEP FORWARD AT NWA J36. NWA J36 had an entry of 3525 prime sheep forward at its weekly sale with a ringside of 12 active buyers. Prime Lambs sold to a top price of £83 for heavy texel x lambs from TJ & MM Winder with Suffolk x £79 from M Stephenson. An increasing number of mules coming forward selling twice to £64 from CP Bateman and J & M Wilson with hill lambs to £64 for Rough Fell from R Bowmass.

A pen of beltex x lambs from C Dean & LJ Brennand topped the sale at 178p/kk with texel x from Mssrs Helen achieving 168p/kg. Suffolk x lambs reached 168p/kg from A & L Huddleston, Mules 150p/kg from WM & JE Shuttleworth. An overall average of 154p/kg was achieved for all sold with buyers competing for all types with well finished lambs continuing to sell to a premium.
