Turn It Up! The Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series is back after a year-long hiatus.

Photos by Demilio Photography courtesy of the City of Ocala

// B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

L

ast spring, the City of Ocala, in partnership with the Marion Cultural Alliance (MCA), was primed to kick off another year of the Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series when COVID-19 shut down public events throughout our community. Thankfully, they were able to work with the Levitt Foundation and artists originally in the 2020 lineup to bring back the music series starting this month. Funded in part by a grant through the national Levitt AMP Foundation, cities are selected through an application process that includes community voting to host free, family-friendly concerts for the public. The Ocala series features a concert every Friday night between April 16 and June 25 (excluding May 28 for Memorial Day) from 7-9pm. Concerts will take place at Webb Field at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. If there happens to be inclement weather, the concerts will move indoors to the E.D. Croskey Recreation Center, which features newly improved acoustics and sound absorption. Although as of press time the full lineup had not been released, the series will feature a diverse collection of high-caliber talent spanning a variety of musical genres. “Each night will have an opening band, intermission provided by a local Cultural Arts nonprofit and a headliner,” explains Laura Walker, the City of Ocala’s Cultural Arts and Sciences Division head. “There will be food trucks, including Big Lee’s. It will be a great time for the whole family.” 8

352PREVIEW.COM

Attendees should bring their own blankets or chairs, and socially distanced seating through family/social pod circles will be provided. Sanitation stations and procedures to sanitize high-touch areas will take place throughout the series, and face coverings are encouraged. “Marion Cultural Alliance is proud to partner with the city to bring back the Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series in 2021,” says Jaye Baillie, executive director of MCA. “This series has reimagined and injected new life into the historic Webb Field with 10 weeks of free concerts. The diverse lineup features acclaimed, emerging talent to seasoned, award-winning artists on the local, regional and nation circuits.” One important aspect of the music series is the requirement that the concerts take place in an underutilized public space in an attempt to transform it into a welcoming destination for the community. “The activation of Webb Field through the Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series has brought investment to the surrounding historic neighborhoods and is catalyst to creating one of the city’s three cultural arts hubs on the west side of Ocala,” says Laura.

“It brings attention to an underutilized space through creative placemaking, provides community engagement and accessibility and exposure to music in a free, family-friendly environment. There have also been additional infrastructure improvements spurred by the series, including new lighting at Webb Field, upgraded power and other such projects.” Fortunately for our community, it’s sounds like there will be plenty of free music through the Levitt AMP Music Series in Ocala’s future. “The city has received four Levitt AMP Music Series Grants over five years and one Levitt AMP Bridge Grand for the production of the Ocala Black History Mural Guide,” says Laura. “The city can continue to apply; however, due to COVID and delays with the 2020 series across the nation, they have decided to bypass an application process for 2022 and award the same allocation to those already receiving funding. This means Ocala will receive a Levitt AMP Music Series grant again in 2022.” Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series // Fridays from 7-9pm, April 16 through June 25 (excluding May 28 for Memorial Day) // Webb Field at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation or E.D. Go Green Downtown Ocala was abuzz for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. // W R I T T E N A N D PHOTOGRAPHED BY JESSE JAMES

S

t. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate with friends and family. It also provides the perfect reason to enjoy Irish-inspired food and drinks. Many of Ocala’s favorite restaurants and watering holes put together menus that added several special drinks and culinary creations, while live music entertained folks from place to place. From Brick City Southern Kitchen to The Tipsy Skipper, each location created a festive, fun and delicious selection of bites and beverages. The Lodge had incredible corned beef and cabbage, which always pairs nicely with some Guinness. The Black Sheep on Broadway took shepherd’s pie to the next level with their shepherd’s pie empanadas. And, of course, no St. Patrick’s Day would be complete without a visit to O’Malley’s Alley. Guests took to the downtown streets and enjoyed live music at venues like Bank Street Patio Bar and Pi on Broadway, wearing their most festive outfits and enjoying a night of wonderful weather. The evening was filled with the color green and great vibes, an ideal combination for a night out—and a perfect St. Patrick’s Day.

Life On The Prairie Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a nature lover’s dream. With miles of trails and an abundance of wildlife, the park is well worth the 40-minute drive north. // B Y K A R I N F A B R YCUSHENBERY

“P

aynes Prairie Preserve State Park is biologically, geologically and historically unique,” says Alex Cronin with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s press office. “This park became Florida’s first state preserve in 1971 and is now designated as a National Natural Landmark.” The park is home to more than 420 vertebrates and is also part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Throughout the prairie visitors will find observation platforms and wildlife viewing areas. The park features 20 distinct biological communities that support a huge variety of wildlife, livestock and birds. Visitors may even come across wild bison and horses. “Exhibits and an audio-visual program at the visitor center explain the area’s natural and cultural history,” says Alex. “A 50-foothigh observation tower near the visitor center provides a panoramic view of the preserve. This tower provides a great opportunity to search for the roaming groups of bison and horses. Some 14

352PREVIEW.COM

of the animals commonly seen also include sandhill cranes, bald eagles, alligators, otters, deer, bobcats and snakes.” Alex points out that well-known naturalist and artist William Bartram wrote about his visit to the prairie in 1774, calling it the “Great Alachua Savannah.” A popular part of Paynes Prairie, Lake Wauberg provides visitors with access to a boat ramp for fishing and canoeing. Electric boat motors are allowed, but gasoline powered boats are not. Lake Wauberg spans approximately 300 acres, and the public boat ramp is located on the east side of the lake. There are no canoes

for rent, so plan ahead. “One of the main draws at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is the variety and expanse of the park’s trail system,” says Alex. “Eight trails provide opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and bicycling, including the 16-mile-long, paved Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail.” Trails range in distance from 1.3 to 16 miles, allowing visitors to choose the type of day they want to pursue. Longer trails are ideal for bicyclists and equestrians; however, trails may be limited to certain types of traffic, so check with the welcome center to verify before setting out. For a quick view of Paynes Prairie, make a stop at the observation dock off Highway 441. It’s the perfect stop on your way to dinner or a Gator game in Gainesville, and we promise, the vista is photo worthy, especially at sunset. ook around—the flowers are blooming beautiful colors throughout the 352. These three botanical gardens are the perfect backdrop to welcome in spring.

KANAPAHA BOTANICAL GARDENS Offering a mile and a half of paved walkways with over 20 specialty gardens, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is a 68-acre facility that includes the largest herb garden in the Southeastern United States and the largest public collection of bamboo in the state of Florida. The western side of the gardens is dominated by the 1/4-mile-long manmade water feature that consists of four different waterfalls. Although the most colorful time of the year at Kanapaha is June through September, guests 18

visiting in spring can still expect to see several of the gardens in bloom, including the Bulb Garden, Hummingbird Garden, Butterfly Hill and Rock Garden. “Each season has different offerings,” notes Alexis Caffrey, director of Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. “Giant Victoria water lilies can only be seen in full glory in late summer and Trilliums only in the winter months. Even during low-color months, Kanapaha maintains several evergreen collections—such as the Bamboo Garden, Rock Garden and Palm Collection—where plants revered for non-floral beauty are available for viewing.” Guests visiting should give themselves on average 90 minutes to two hours to enjoy the gardens, Alexis suggests. Dogs on a leash are welcome in the gardens, and visitors can bring

in outside food and drinks to enjoy a picnic. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase for $1, and admission is good for the day, but guests are allowed to leave for lunch and come back that same day. Guided tours are available the first Saturday of every month at 10am. Private tours for groups of 10 or more are also available with two weeks notice. There is no additional charge for guided tours above the regular admission fee, which is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-13 and free for children under 5 when accompanied by a parent. SHOLOM PARK A place of natural beauty where visitors may relax and enjoy the soothing sights and peaceful sounds of nature, Sholom Park sits on 44 acres and offers more than two miles of paved walking trails and several water features. As with most great achievements, Sholom Park began as a vision of Sidney and Ina Colen. “Inspired by a visit to Boston Gardens, Sholom Park was created for a purpose: to provide a place where the pursuit of inner peace and learning may be enhanced and enjoyed,” shares Robert Colen, managing director for Sholom Park. “The park was named after Sidney Colen’s grandfather, Sholom, which is also the Hebrew word for peace. The park does not serve a political or religious agenda or belief system.” Key features of the park include the Pond Overlook and Trail area, where visitors can feed the koi fish or observe other critters that make the pond their home, and the Olive Tree Promenade, which features 18 olive trees, a symbol of peace and life. At the pergebo—part gazebo, part pergola—you’ll find the structure covered in Confederate Jasmine, which blooms every spring with small white fragrant flowers. Other areas of interest include the labyrinth, with its 24 points of reflection, and the Formal Garden, which is surrounded by lush green foliage, colorful flowering bushes and large live oaks. “Sholom Park is in peak blooming season from March to early May,” says Robert. “The velvety soft, bright white Gardenia flowers have an intoxicating fragrance that fills the air. The Southern Magnolias with their large white magnolia blossoms have a fresh citrus-like scent. There’s plenty of colorful and fragrant blooms and blossoms to see and smell throughout Sholom Park this spring season.” Master the Possibilities offers Walk and Talk tours lead by Robert and Park Manager Brian DeVane. Visit masterthepossibilities.org for more information. The park will host the Fun at the Park “Music and Art” event on Sunday, May 2 from 1-4pm, where guests can enjoy an afternoon of live music and more than two dozen local artists and craftspeople. CEDAR LAKES WOODS AND GARDENS One of the most unique landscapes in North Central Florida, Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens is built in a 100-year-old retired lime rock quarry. Founded by Dr. Raymond Webber and opened to the public in 2014, the creation of the gardens began over 30 years ago when Ray discovered the quarry. As the property had been abandoned long ago, he purchased it and originally planned to use it as his own private fishing pond. After digging out the old mining remnants, he began to transform the swampy quarry, and a small team of workers helped him create different islands throughout the quarry, concrete walkways, separate pools, waterfalls, pavilions, gazebos and bridges. The garden is now composed of two levels: the upper level, which surrounds the top of the quarry, and the lower level, which dives down into the quarry. “Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens has elevation that is very unusual to find in Florida, which is typically very flat,” explains Olyvia Ciulla, marketing manager and event coordinator with the venue. “The 40-foot waterfall is also a very unique piece of our landscape that is nearly impossible to find in Florida. The quarry walls are lined with concrete and rock planters and filled with hundreds of species of unique plants and flowers. The surrounding trees and the topography of the quarry allow temperate and semitropical plants to flourish year-round.”

A few notable areas of the garden include the Japanese Gardens, which contains some of the most beautiful Japanese maple trees; Bird House Field, with its fragrant roses and massive bird house modeled after those found on the grounds of an English castle; and Look-Out Point, the highest point of the garden. The Orchard Garden is also an amazing area brimming with fluttering butterflies and fruit trees. It’s recommended that guests pack a picnic lunch to enjoy, and furry friends are welcome as long as they remain on a leash at all times. It’s also important to know that due to the nature of the gardens and the quarry’s natural landscape, there are some bumpy paths that may be difficult for some wheelchairs. Make sure to check out the website for details on the upcoming 6th Annual Garden Show and Spring Festival, happening May 1-2. The event features live music, vendors selling native and exotic plants, arts and crafts booths, food trucks and more. ho says comics are just for kids? The Brick City Comic and Toy Show is back for its second year to bring together guests—the young and the young at heart—for a day of pop culture fun. First held in 2019, the show was canceled last year due to COVID-19. Organizers received plenty of positive feedback from vendors, guests, artists and attendees and decided 2021 was the perfect year for a comeback. The event will feature special guests; food for sale; and vendors selling comic books, toys, and other pop culture items. And while there will be WE’LL HAVE A VERY NICE no cosplay events SELECTION OF COMICS, TOYS this year, guests are encouraged to AND ART. WE WANT PEOPLE attend in costume. there will be no panels at this year’s event, all artists will be available at their tables. As of press time, the following guests were scheduled to attend: Roland Mann, a former Marvel Comics editor, who now runs the Silverline Comics brand; Darla Vasilas, artists and author of Darla’s Animal Art; Cadena Kuhn, an artist known as xravengrapex who specializes in comic and comic-like art; Martin Pierro, the publisher and owner of Cosmic Times; Steph Cannon and Matt Knowles, creators for InSymmetry Creations; Monica and Graven Ravenwolf, artists, designers and creators; and Terance Baker and James Bethel of B Brothers Comic Books. You can learn more about these artists on the show’s website. 20

As Tom explains, vendors will be available from both local and out-oftown comic book shops. “Vendors will primarily sell comic books, toys and other pop culture items,” he says. “Three of the four sponsor stores— Bearded Brown Coats Comics and Games, Captain Kirk’s Geek Shop and Vibranium Comics—will have tables at the event. Vintage Toy King is another sponsor store and all are located in Ocala.” You can view a full list of vendors on the event’s website. Who doesn’t love Pokémon? While you’re at the event, you’ll also be able to visit with PikaBelleChu and check out her Pikachu vehicle. PikaBelleChu has been on the comic scene for over 20 years and is known for her passion for Pokémon, having over 22,000 collectible Pokémon items, including the PikaBug. When it’s time to eat, the Fillin’ Good Food

Truck will serve breakfast and lunch outside the auditorium. While you’re at the event, know that masks are mandatory and aisles have been widened to assist with social distancing. Hand sanitizer will also be available throughout the hall. For Tom, the best part about the event is getting to see friends and colleagues in the comic book industry. He also loves when someone asks for a specific item and you just happen to have it. “We’ll have a very nice selection of comics, toys and art,” he says. “We want people to join us in a safe-as-possible environment to celebrate a gathering of like-minded people.” Brick City Comic and Toy Show // April 17, 10am-4pm // Southeastern Livestock Pavilion Auditorium, 2232 NE Jacksonville Road, Ocala // $5 at the door, 12 and under free with adult. THERE’S SOMETHING TO BE SAID FOR THE QUIET SERENITY A WALK THROUGH THE WOODS CAN BRING. THE SOUND OF BIRDS CHIRPING, GRAVEL AND LEAVES CRUNCHING UNDER FOOT. MARION COUNTY OFFERS AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL TRAILS TO EXPLORE, MANY OF WHICH ARE PART OF A GREATER TRAIL SYSTEM, THE FLORIDA NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL.

T

he National Trails System was founded through a congressional act in 1968. Through the National Trails System Act, four types of long-distance trails were designated, including national scenic trails (NSTs), national historic trails (NHTs) and national recreation trails (NRTs). Since the inception of the system, congress has established 19 NHTs and 11 NSTs. “We are lucky to have the Florida National Scenic Trail (commonly known as the Florida Trail) in our state,” says Kelly Van Patten, trail program director. “The trail is in the same family as the Appalachian Trail and the Oregon Trail, and it was designated by Congress in 1983.” The first orange blaze of the Florida Trail, though, was painted in 1966 right here in the Ocala National Forest at Clearwater Lake. The work to create the Florida Trail Association, however, began two years earlier. “The founder of the Florida Trail Association (Jim Kern) once hiked the Appalachian Trail and came back and decided we should have something similar in Florida,” says Kelly. “A group of Boy Scouts and some of the organization’s founding volunteers created the first section of the trail.” Then came the work of figuring out how to connect various sections of the Florida Trail together. The manual labor is hard work, clearing brush to cut in sections of the trail. The Florida Trail, in its entirety, is roughly 1,500 miles long and stretches from Gulf Islands National Seashore in the Panhandle to the Everglades down south. The Florida Trail, according to Kelly, actually refers to sections of trails that are hosted on more than 100 different properties throughout the state. When combined, those paths make up the Florida Trail. “It’s a patchwork,” she says. “We work with private landowners, state parks, water management areas and more to add and connect sections of the trail together.” Volunteers, though, are the heart and soul of the Florida Trail. With just 10 permanent employees at the FTA, the trail’s upkeep and maintenance is reliant on the hundreds of volunteers who work the trails. “Every foot of trail has to be maintained every year,” says Kelly. “The trails need to remain open and passable.” Some work by clearing the land itself, while others put their various skillsets to use, including building infrastructure like footbridges or suspension bridges. There are 19 volunteer chapters that help maintain and establish the trail, including the Sandhill Chapter here in Marion County. The

chapter maintains the trail from Suwanee River State Park west to White Springs and along the Cross Florida Greenway between Dunnellon and the Eastern-West Corridors junction in the Ocala National Forest. “Marion County actually has more miles of the Florida Trail than any other county in Florida,” says Kelly. “It’s very significant for residents of Marion County to have so many accessible points.” Chances are if you’ve hiked any trails in Marion County, you’ve probably already experienced the Florida National Scenic Trail. The Marion County portions of the trail meander their way through the Ocala National Forest and alongside the Cross Florida Greenway. Marion County’s portions of the trail offer a variety of ecosystems, including pine flatwoods, prairies, sandhills and the Big

Scrub area. Following along the well-maintained footpath, you’ll notice the orange swatches (known as blazes) painted on the trees and posts, indicating the direction of the trail. “The orange blaze is the quintessential marker for the Florida Trail,” says Kelly, “but there are also blue swatches that lead to campgrounds and water resources and white swatches that allow for a high-water alternative or loop back to the main trail.” Every year some 374,000 people walk some point of the Florida Trail. Another 75 to 100 set out to walk the entirety of the trail, which takes about two and a half months to complete and is no easy task. “Most start this trek in January in Big Cypress National Preserve swamp in the Everglades,” says Kelly. “Here hikers walk

KEEPING THE KIDS SAFE The Florida Trail Association has the following tips for a fun day of hiking with the kiddos. 1. Pack Light – Give the kids a small bag or backpack to carry. Include a drink, poncho and healthy snack to keep them going. 2. Whistle While You Walk – Give each child a whistle and train them that it’s for emergency use only should they get separated from the group. 3. Snack Healthy – Skip the chips and go for granola bars, dried fruit or trail mix. 4. Hydrate! – Bring a refillable water bottle and make sure it’s full of ice water when you set out on your adventure. through anywhere from a couple inches to a few feet of water. It sounds intimidating, but it’s an otherworldly experience—it feels like you’re on another planet. It’s challenging, but completely worth it to experience this portion of the trail.” Traveling north, hikers will cross a Seminole reservation, water management districts and work their way around Lake Okeechobee. One of Kelly’s favorite sections of the trail is next: the Kissimmee River area. “This portion of the trail really showcases the quintessential Florida. You’ll see sugar plantations, historic cattle ranches, citrus groves, live oaks and more. It’s beautiful.” Moving into the Central Florida area, you’ll find a mix of pine flatwoods. Some of the trails in this portion of the state (and a few in the panhandle) give way to paved road walks. North Florida and into the panhandle, the trail features a variety of elevation changes and passageways such as suspension bridges before finishing with a beach walk at Gulf Islands National Seashore Beach. “We are currently working with agencies and real estate developers to reroute portions of Central Florida and the panhandle,” says Kelly. “About 270 miles of the trail are currently road walks. Our agency partner, the U.S. Forest Service, oversees route planning, land 26

acquisition and funding.” Regardless of where you are in Florida, minus the Florida Keys, chances are you’re within an hour’s drive of a section of the Florida Trail, and whether you’re a resident or a visitor, it’s worth the short trip to take a stroll through the woods. “The Florida Trail allows you to see parts of the state that, especially if you’re a tourist, you may not normally see when just passing through. This is wild Florida, and there are a variety of very diverse ecosystems waiting to be explored. There’s something to be said for the pace and the peace of walking the Florida Trail.” Florida Trail Association // floridatrail.org // To volunteer or learn more about the Sandhill Chapter of the Florida Trail Association, visit floridatrail.org, click on “about us,” “chapters” and “sandhill.”

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT There are a few apps that highlight and help you traverse national trails. One favorite is Guthook Guides. The app is free, but keep in mind some of the maps, including The Florida Trail, cost money to download. The app includes maps, photos, current trail route updates, points of interest along the trail and more.

5. Dress Up – Put your youngsters in bright colors. You want them to stand out, not blend in with the woods. 6. Be prepared – Weather changes fast— especially in Florida. Have child-sized rain ponchos on hand. And don’t forget the sunscreen, too. 7. Be Goal Orientated – Choose your hikes based on the reward at the end. Think a beautiful lake or waterfall, or maybe a picnic spot or playground. It gives everyone something to work for and look forward to. 8. Update Your Kit – Add child-sized medicines and dosages to your first aid kit, including insect sting sprays and bandages. 9. Play The Quiet Game – Let your little one’s know that you’re more likely to see wildlife when you’re quiet. 10. Leave No Trace – Carry an empty bag to collect litter along the way. efore you plan another dinner and a movie date with your special someone, check out these theaters for a unique experience that combines dinner or drinks and a great film.

ENZIAN & EDEN BAR Enzian, located in Maitland, just north of Orlando, is Central Florida’s only full-time alternative cinema and home to Eden Bar and the Florida Film Festival. The theater is a single-screen cinema café, offering mostly independent and foreign films, with two unique dining options—a true fusion of film and food. “Enzian started as a reparatory theater in 1985 and quickly evolved into a first-run 28

art house cinema with an added variety of nostalgic, diverse and educational special programming,” says Janie Pope, director of development and public relations with the theater. “Eden Bar, the restaurant and bar on property, was founded in 2008.” When visiting Enzian, you’re guaranteed a unique night out. While Enzian is the theater and overarching organization, Eden Bar is very much a part of that. You can enjoy dinner inside while watching a movie, or join friends outside for a different happy hour or dinner experience by the fountain under the oak trees. “Eden Bar is a full outdoor restaurant and bar, open for lunch, dinner and late-night bites,” says Janie. “Eden serves beer, wine and

liquor and boasts a thoughtfully curated craft Tiki cocktail menu, all alongside a vast menu of delicious food ranging from our popular Wagyu beef burger and blackened Mahi tacos to flatbreads and more.” When you see a movie at Enzian, it’s a full dinner-theater experience. Most items on the outdoor Eden Bar menu are also available inside the theater. Beer and wine are also available for purchase inside, while cocktails may be purchased at the outdoor bar and brought into the movie. If you’re looking for mainstream, blockbuster movies, Enzian won’t cut it. Enzian is, however, the only art house in Central Florida, offering first-run independent and foreign films as its

The theater also hosts special programs that cater to other niche audiences, such as Cult Classics, Saturday Matinee Classics, Peanut Butter Matinees (family-friendly films where kids under 12 get in free) and Music Mondays, which features documentary, narrative or live concert films preceded by live music outside at Eden Bar. You can also check out Enzian On Demand for a catalog of films available to stream online through the theater’s website. The perfect excuse to visit this month, Enzian is home of the Florida Film Festival, which takes place April 9-22, celebrating its 30th anniversary. The Florida Film Festival is an Oscar-qualifying festival in all short film categories. Learn more about the festival at floridafilmfestival.com. “Enzian is truly a wonderful oasis for the mind and body,” says Janie. “Nestled under beautiful oaks, if you’re not looking for our marquee, you might just miss us, but when you turn into our property, you’re transported to what feels like a literal Garden of Eden, with open air, great conversation, personable staff, delicious food and drinks, and best of all, worldclass films.” Enzian and Eden Bar // 1300 South Orlando, Maitland // enzian.org // (407) 629-0054

cala’s Downtown Market Food Truck Park opened this past winter after Tito Comas, who manages the food park and owns Victorian on the Boulevard, happened to see a post on Facebook. “A food truck park was going in at the old K-Mart location on 36th Avenue,” he says. “The deal ended up falling through, and the trucks needed to leave the area in a matter of days. I ended up calling the city and was put in touch with the Downtown Market to discuss the acre of property behind the Victorian. I thought it was the perfect location for the trucks, and within four or five hours, we had a deal.” Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays (with more days and options to come), Tito says one of the best aspects of the food truck park is that there is something for everyone. Although the trucks may vary from day to day, some are consistent and are quickly becoming fan favorites. “This is not fast food,” says Tito. “Everything is fresh, made with quality ingredients and made to order. You may have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for your meal, but I promise it’s worth it.”

The most difficult decision might just be choosing where to eat. Jimmy’s Philly Cheesesteaks serves up genuine Philly goodness. Mexi-rican offers a tasty fusion of Mexican and Puerto Rican dishes. Tom’s Taste of Chicago is just that: Whether it’s pizza or hot dogs, it’s served up Chicagostyle. Gourmet on the Go changes its menu regularly and may feature anything from crab cakes to empanadas to vegan salads. In the mood for grilled cheese that’s been kicked up a notch? Sweet Baby Cheeses is for you, and Tito says the biscuits from The Smoked Biscuit Company are the best he’s ever tasted. You can also treat the kids (and yourself) to an icy cool dessert from Kona Ice. The area is truly a park with amenities that make for an enjoyable, comfortable experience. “We have the covered area of the adjacent market,” says Tito. “There are tables, chairs, bathrooms, free parking, a kids’ park and we are ADA accessible.”

The area is maintained and cleaned by the city and has 24-hour security. “We are getting more and more traffic through the park,” says Tito. “There is plenty of nearby parking, and the park is conveniently located and very accessible. We are fortunate to have something like this here in Ocala. Food truck parks have been blossoming all over the country, and Ocala has come up with the times.” The trucks have come together to implement a loyalty card plus discount coupons for loyal customers. The cards are valid at all trucks, and once a customer receives 10 punches, the card can be exchanged for a $10 gift card that can be used at any of the trucks.
