THE OCALA POLO CLUB BRINGS OUT THE COMMUNITY’S COMPETITIVE SPIRIT.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Sports fans, horse lovers and outdoor enthusiasts agree, the Ocala Polo Club offers energizing entertainment for all ages.
This winter marks the 5th season of Ocala Polo, featuring 16 matches from December 8 through March 23. The scenic Florida Horse Park is the place to be for all the action.
A centuries-old sport, the first U.S. polo club was formed in 1876, with the U.S. Polo Association (USPA) launched in 1890. Although polo in this country faded after WWII, it rebounded in the 1950s and ‘60s. Today, there are at least 250 USPA clubs and over 4,500 members.
IT’S A VERY APPROACHABLE SPORT. MANY PLAYERS COME TO THE SIDELINES AND GIVE HIGH FIVES AT THE END OF THE GAME.
LAUREN PROCTOR-BROWN, DVM TEAM RESOLUTE MEMBER & POLO INSTRUCTOR
Two teams of four mounted players compete on a 300-by-160-yard grass field. Riders score by using their mallet to drive a ball through their opponents’ goal posts. The competition gets intense as horses sprint up to 35mph and polo balls reach speeds of 110mph.
A match is divided into four periods called “chukkers,” with each match lasting about 90 minutes. Players typically ride a fresh horse in each chukker, so 60 to 64 horses take to the field per match.
Watching the action up close makes for an exhilarating afternoon.
“It’s a very approachable sport. Many players come to the sidelines and give high fives at the end of the game,” says Lauren Proctor-Brown, DVM, a local equine veterinarian who competes on Team Resolute for Ocala Polo and also teaches polo lessons.
Players range in age from teens to 70s. Men and women compete in matches, and Ocala Polo also has a women’s league.
“We’ve made a safe place for women to feel comfortable on the field and learn the sport,” says Lauren.
Winter matches draw as many as 500 spectators. Some reserve tents for tailgating, while others come to watch as general admission. Thanks to the grass setting, the
venue is quite handicapped accessible. Bring your own food and drink, or purchase from food trucks on-site.
Matches take place on Saturdays. Gates open at noon, and winter matches start at 1pm. General admission section tickets are $5 online or $10 at gate. December matches are free general admission when you sign up online. Reserve your tailgate spot online.
One of the season’s biggest matches is Horses & Heroes on February 23, which raises money for the veterans’ group Soldiers Freedom Outdoors.

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE DURING THE FESTIVAL AT FORT KING.
WRITTEN BY CYNTHIA MCFARLAND
Leave the 21st century behind for a few hours, and step back in time during the Festival at Fort King.
Explore Florida history up close and personal at this family-friendly event packed with historic crafts, old-fashioned games, interactive workshops, storytelling and living historians.
Admission is free at the Fort King National Historic Landmark on the weekend of December 7-8 from 10am to 3pm.
All demonstrations, workshops, games and activities are also free of charge. Some activities have limited space, so attendees should sign up at the festival. Craft vendors will sell handmade items, and a variety of food vendors will be on hand.
“The highlight is a re-enactment of the start of the Second Seminole War, which takes place once each day at 2pm and lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Additionally, our cannon crew res the cannon every hour on the hour, creating an exciting atmosphere that
encourages attendees to stay and enjoy events throughout the day,” says Gregory Davis, public information o cer for the City of Ocala.
“This year, we’re excited to feature the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Ah-Tah-ThiKi Museum with traditional Stomp Dance performances, plus new activities like a puppet show for young children, live animal demonstrations from the Gator Boys and performances by two live bands,” he adds.
You’ve likely driven on Fort King Street but may not have known it was named for a former U.S. Army frontier fort.
A treaty signed in 1832 required the Seminoles to give up their land, but when the U.S. Army was sent to enforce the treaty in 1835, a group of 180 Seminole warriors attacked the detachment led by Major Francis Dade heading to Fort King. Thus began the Second Seminole War, which lasted until 1842, the longest and costliest war waged against America’s native people.
“The Festival at Fort King is crucial for preserving Marion County’s history, as it takes place on the same grounds where the Second Seminole War began,” says Davis.
“The reconstructed fort mirrors the original, providing an authentic, immersive experience. This festival fosters curiosity, encouraging visitors to explore history further and engage in meaningful discussions on impactful topics, like the Indian Removal Act, in a respectful and inclusive environment.”
Student Day is open to homeschool, public and private students on Friday, December 6. Spots are limited so early registration is encouraged: https://form.jotform. com/241076111969155

today’s christmas festivities are often overshadowed with last-minute shopping lists, rushing from one event to the next and hours spent slaving in the kitchen to create the perfect holiday spread. take a moment to think back to what christmas must have been like in simpler times, with a less hurried way of life.
while we can’t go back in time, we can bring a bit of history to our seasonal celebrations, taking the time to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. throughout our great region there are groups of people and volunteer organizations opening the doors to homes from throughout history on a variety of holiday home tours. here are a few we think are worth checking out.

There’s something about the magic of twinkling lights on a cool evening, Christmas carols quietly playing in the background. A re crackling in the replace, adorned with pine-scented garland and beautiful candles as children anxiously peek at the presents underneath the tree. Perhaps it is the most wonderful time of the year. This year, join the Historic Ocala Preservation Society at the Bryant House for an evening of celebration, including live music, delicious refreshments, wine and plenty of holiday cheer in a historic setting.
“This year we are putting on a sort of grassroots community event,” says Lela Kerley, member of the Historic Ocala Preservation Society. “The 2024 HOPS Holiday Party will
include festive decorations, an opportunity to tour the historic Bryant House and an opportunity to meet HOPS board members and learn about how you can help preserve the history of our community.”
Although the Bryant House is no longer a privately owned home, the circa 1892 home is decorated as if the family is still there, living their best life in the early 1890s. William Robert Bryant was originally from Missouri and later moved to Belleview and then Ocala to provide his family with a good, solid education. At the time, Ocala’s Central Elementary was one of the rst brick-and-mortar school buildings in the state. The middle school was the current Eighth Street Elementary, and Ocala High School was housed in the current Osceola Middle School buildings. Bryant’s son went on to become one of the rst CPAs in the state, and his grandson would become governor, working under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.
“This year the home is decorated with the hobby horse in mind,” says Lela. “The hobby horse is an iconic image of the 19th century in regard to children’s toys, and it has been highlighted in various Christmas stories. We
planned to create that kind of aura of holiday mystique, if you will, for this year’s festivities.”
In addition to the HOPS Holiday Party, Lela shares that several of Ocala’s historic districts, including the Tuscawilla and Southeast areas of town, take part in an annual holiday decorating contest.
“Five or six judges get together and drive through the areas, taking in the lights and décor. The homes are voted on in categories like best porch, best door and best overall décor.”
While there is no o cial map to these homes, a drive through the areas will produce plenty of awe-inspiring decoration ideas for your own home.
“We are trying to preserve Ocala and maintain it’s historic charm,” says Lela. “It’s that charm that draws people to our area from throughout the state and throughout the country to visit and even move here.” And there’s no time like the holidays to take that historic charm and make it shine.

BThe historic Haile Homestead in nearby Gainesville is a must visit for history bu s and historians alike, especially during the holiday season when the home is adorned with trees and wreaths, bringing to life the spirit of Christmas past.
Karen Kirkman, president and historian of the Historic Haile Homestead, encourages visitors to arrive to the homestead early and make a stop in the visitor’s center before moving on to the other exhibits this season.
“We aim to share information about the enslaved people who lived and worked on the homestead, bringing their story to life through two videos and docent education.
“The 6,200-square-foot home was actually built in 1865 by the enslaved people of Thomas and Serena Haile,” Karen adds. “This was a working cotton plantation, one of 40 or 50 in Alachua County. There are only about three left, and this is the only one that is open to the public.”

All American has plenty— they are ready to share!
Overstocked shelves, Too many to view. Our end-of-year clearance Means great deals for you! The elves are on standby, The reindeer ready to go. Just call us for service, No worries ‘bout snow! Happy Holidays to All, ONE CALL DOES IT ALL!
Guided Tours take place, giving visitors a glimpse of the holidays in the mid-1800s. Karen notes that unlike past years, there was no decoration theme this year.
“We had our team of decorators just do their thing this year,” she says. “It’s just gorgeous, and the house smells wonderful. The aroma of pine just hangs in the air throughout the whole month. The team really puts a lot of e ort into the decorations each year.”
The homestead o ers guided tours of the home on Saturdays from 10am-2pm and Sundays from 12-4pm between December 7 and 29. The tours begin at a quarter after every hour, and the last tour begins 45 minutes prior to closing, so plan accordingly.
“As you walk up the front stairs and into the
house, it’s mostly original,” says Karen. “You’ll be standing on the same oor the original family walked on. Through the front passage you’ll see that the home is furnished with many pieces owned by the original Haile family as well as other generations of the family, including Serena’s family, the Chesnuts.” You’ll visit the parlor, music room, main bedroom, nursery, o ce, back porch, school room and more.
Perhaps the most famous aspect of the Haile Homestead, though, is the talking walls.
“There are more than 12,500 words literally written on the walls throughout the house,” says Karen. “After the senior Hailes died in the 1890s, the house became a bit of a party and hunting house for the younger generations. There’s quite a bit of funny entries on the walls from that time.
“We encourage everyone to come visit the Homestead this holiday season,” adds Karen. “It’s a really unique experience to see the house in a whole di erent way at the holidays.”

A Magical Mansion
Just to our east in Volusia County is a Christmas mansion that USA Today named as one of the 10 Best Reader’s Choice travel award contest winners for Best Holiday Historic Home Tour in 2023. The mansion has also maintained status as TripAdvisor’s No. 1 rated landmark tourist attraction since 2014 and one of the Top 10 attractions in the USA since 2022. And the accolades are well earned.
The Stetson Mansion in Deland is one of Florida’s most historic homes and our area’s only Gilded Age Victorian mansion, which seems especially tting since it was the Victorians who introduced many of our modern-day Christmas traditions, including the Christmas tree and gift giving.
“The Stetson Mansion is always a popular choice for visitors here in West Volusia County,” says Georgia Turner, executive director of West Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority. “We have so much fun seeing what they come up with every year to highlight the historical value of the home surrounded by the pure joy of Christmas.” And it’s a sight to behold.
The home features guided and self-guided tours with free audio accessible by smartphone, and two to seven tours are o ered daily through January 18. Visitors will marvel at the 10 elegant and elaborate designer-decorated rooms. Themed rooms include A Bing Crosby
Christmas, A Santa Convention, A Country Christmas, An Iconic Stetson Christmas and more. Keep in mind that this is not a historical tour, it’s a celebration of Christmas tour. The mansion’s regular historic tours will resume in February.
Built in 1886 for iconic hat maker John B. Stetson, also credited as Florida’s rst o cial snowbird, the mansion is on the National Historic Register and features 16 intricate parquet oor patterns, 10,000 panes of antique glass, intricate wood carvings and much more. Incorporated into the Christmas rooms are unusual nativity scenes from around the world.
The home’s current occupants have embraced the history of the mansion and the love of the holiday season, even continuing the tradition started by Stetson and his friend, Thomas Edison, of lighting the Christmas tree in the parlor using the same electrical outlet Edison installed for one of the very rst string of tree lights in a home in 1886.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to share history and festivity with visitors and members of our community,” says one of the home’s owners, Michael Solari, in a press release. “Each year, we meticulously design and curate a magical holiday experience in hopes of spreading joy. It is an honor to return to the 2024 holiday season with more opportunities to share our love for Christmas and an incredible historic home which we are grateful to look after.”
