01 what is travel?

Travel is the movement of people between relatively distant geographical locations, and can involve travel by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, airplane, or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip. Travel can also include relatively short stays between successive movements.

_ TRAVEL

7

01 why you travel?

Reasons for traveling include recreation, tourism or vacationing, research travel for the gathering of information, for holiday to visit people, volunteer travel for charity, migration to begin life somewhere else, religiouspilgrimages and mission trips, business travel, trade, commuting, and other reasons, such as to obtain health care or fleeing war or for the enjoyment of traveling. Travel may occur by human-powered transport such aswalking or bicycling, or with vehicles, such as public transport, automobiles, trains and airplanes.

Motives to travel include pleasure, relaxation, discovery and exploration, getting to know other cultures and taking personal time for building interpersonal relationships. Travel may be local, regional, national (domestic) orinternational. In some countries, non-local internal travel may require an internal passport, while international travel typically requires a passport and visa. A trip may also be part of a round-trip, which is a particular type of travel whereby a person moves from one location to another and returns.

_ WITHOUT THOUGHT

A New Design Genre “Without thought” — doing things in this way is something that everyone has experienced. People usually move unconsciously. Even though our heads are full of conscious thoughts, we are not habitually conscious of each and every one of these things. When you’re walking, you don’t consciously think about how you actually go about doing it.

11

01 UNCONSCIOUS

How about when using a smart phone? You don’t consciously focus on every movement you make when touching your phone. The number of different mobile devices that have spread throughout the world in the blink of an eye has easily surpassed the continually increasing world population. How many times at this very moment on a street corner somewhere is the situation where a person suddenly stops walking when their mobile phone rings and the person behind them runs into them playing out?

The diffusion of mobile devices is changing the world. There are also new changes arising one after the other in the design world – the world that created these mobile devices - owing to this. “What does design design?” — the answer to this question is gradually spreading throughout a world that did not exist until now. But if you close your eyes and think about it, people do not lack for experiences of “without thought” even now, the same kinds of experiences they had even before the four great civilizations flourished.

_ WITHOUT THOUGHT

01 without thought naoto

Without Thought is design that designer Naoto Fukasawa, together with DMN, showed the world for the first time in workshops at the very end of the 20th century. Translated into Japanese, without thought is “omowazu”. Designers currently working at the forefront of design participate in this workshop, which

has been held every year since entering the 21st century. The work of these designers demonstrates part of just what kind of design without thought is. It is deemed to be a part because design that is without thought is clearly demonstrated in the process of trial and error that they repeat over the months they participate in the workshops. Without thought has had more than just an impact on world design. By touching on the unconscious human mind hidden behind it, design, which becomes utilitarian when neglected, reminds us to take back that primordial strength that we all bear. The same goes for new genre of design. This is because design cannot be effected without sensing peoples’ unconscious minds.

01 UNCONSCIOUS

“The closer an object gets to the human body, the easier it will be to adapt to if it has a softer, gentler form. Our job, you could say, is not to give forms to objects, but instead to determine their positions, if it’s going to be installed near a wall or used while in a human hand—that’s what’s important.” — Naoto Fukasawa

The Muji rice cooker is without a doubt, a dull looking and feeling product at first glance. But Naoto Fukasawa’s interaction and dialog with a product always results in a raised sense of awareness for the product. He notices things that many designers would overlook. In the case of this product, it’s the act of serving rice from a rice cooker. When you serve rice, you hold the bowl with one hand a scoop rice with the other. The problem arrives after serving the rice. Where do you put your spatula? In Japanese culture, it would be rude to simply place it on the counter.

01 muji

Muji is known for its distinctive design, which is continued throughout its more than 7,000 products. Commentators have described Muji’s design style as having mundanity, being “no-frills”, being “minimalist” and as “Bauhaus-style”.

Muji product design, and brand identity, is based around the selection of materials, a streamlined manufacturing processes, and minimal packaging. Muji products have a limited colour range and are displayed on shelves with minimal packaging, displaying only functional product information and a price tag.

01 BRAUN

“Around the world in 90 years”

Braun has grown from its origins as a small manufacturing workshop into a globally leading producer of electric appliances. The basis of the company’s success is the core values which have guided it from the beginning right up to the present: technical innovation, sustainable development and outstanding design. Today, 90 years after its founding, Braun is the world leader in the foil shaver, epilator and handblender market segments. With its acquisition in October 2005 by Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, USA, Braun became one of 23 global brands in the consumer goods group that achieve annual sales of more than one billion US dollars.

“Less, but better”. — Dieter Rams

The influence of Dieter Rams and “Braun Style” on the design we can see and feel all around us, and not to mention in the design of interfaces, is as clear as day.

Dieter Rams (born 20 May 1932 in Wiesbaden, Hessen) is a German industrial designer closely associated with the consumer products company Braun and the Functionalist school of industrial design. His unobtrusive approach and belief in “less but better” design generated a timeless quality in his products and have influenced the design of many products, which also secured Rams worldwide recognition and appreciation. Rams once explained his design approach in the phrase “Weniger, aber besser” which translates as “Less, but better”.

Rams introduced the idea of sustainable development and of obsolescence being a crime in design in the 1970s. Accordingly, he asked himself the question: is my design good design? The answer formed is now the celebrated ten principles.

2

Makes a product useful

– A product is

bought to be used. It has to satisfy not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic criteria. G ood design e mphasizes t he u sefulness of a p roduct whilst disregarding anything that could detract from it.

3 4

Makes a product understandable

– It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product clearly express its function by making use of the user's intuition. At best, it is self-explanatory.

27

01 DIETER rAMS good design

5

Is unobtrusive

– Products fulfilling a purpose

are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user's self-expression.

Is honest

6 – It does not make a product appearemor

innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

7 _ SIMPLICITY

8

Is thorough down to the last detail

– Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy

in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

9

Is environmentally friendly

–

Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It c onserves r esources a nd m inimizes p hysical a nd v isual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

01 simplicity

Simplicity is the state or quality of being simple. Something which is easy to understand or explain seems simple, in contrast to something complicated. Alternatively, as Herbert A. Simon suggests, something is simple or complex depending on the way we choose to describe it. In some uses, the label “simplicity” can imply beauty, purity, or clarity.

“Simplicity” may also occur with negative connotations to suggest a deficit or insufficiency of nuance or of complexity of a thing, relative to what one supposes as required. The concept of simplicity has been related to in the field of epistemology. According to Occam’s razor, all other things being equal, the simplest theory is the most likely to be true. In the context of human lifestyle, simplicity can denote freedom from hardship, effort or confusion.[citation needed] Specifically, it can refer to a simple living style.

01 mODULAR DESIGN

Modular design, or “modularity in design, is a design approach that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules or skids, that can be independently created and then used in different systems. A modular system can be characterized by functional partitioning into discrete scalable, reusable modules, rigorous use of well-defined modular interfaces, and making use of industry standards for interfaces.

Besides reduction in cost (due to less customization, and shorter learning time), and flexibility in design, modularity offers other benefits such as augmentation (adding new solution by merely plugging in a new module), and exclusion. Examples of modular systems are cars, computers, process systems, solar panels and wind turbines, elevators and modular buildings. Earlier examples include looms, railroad signaling

_ MODULARITY

33

01 mODULAR DESIGN

systems, telephone exchanges, pipe organs and electric power distribution systems. Computers use modularity to overcome changing customer demands and to make the manufacturing process more adaptive to change (see modular programming).[1] Modular design is an attempt to combine the advantages of standardization (high volume normally equals low manufacturing costs) with those of customization. A downside to modularity (and this depends on the extent of modularity) is that low quality modular systems are not optimized for performance. This is usually due to the cost of putting up interfaces between modules.

_ MODULARITY

35

01 mODULAR DESIGN COMPONENT a.

The term modularity is widely used in studies of technological and organizational systems. Product systems are deemed “modular”, for example, when they can be decomposed into a number of components that may be mixed and matched in a variety of configurations. The components are able to connect, interact, or exchange resources (such as energy or data) in some way, by adhering to a standardized interface. Unlike a tightly integrated product whereby each component is designed to work specifically (and often exclusively) with other particular components in a tightly coupled system, modular products are systems of components that are “loosely coupled.”

What is travel? This is the eternal question. The differentiation between “tourist” and “traveler” has been made, and “travelers” frequently stick up their noses at “tourists” while “tourists” don’t really understand what “travelers” are trying to accomplish. The Great ‘Tourist versus Traveler’ debate aside, the world of long-term traveling isn’t as clear-cut as it may appear at first blush.

Portland-based industrial designer Patrick Triato calls his creation “a modern toolkit for your mouth. The handle, which Goodwell guarantees will last a lifetime, is made out of medical-grade aluminum. The kit comes with interchangeable attachments, including a toothbrush head, a flosser, and a tongue scraper.

The attachments are made of a polished bamboo composite, and the toothbrush bristles are made out of Binchotan charcoal, a Japanese charcoal already used in some bathroom and beauty products. When they begin to wear out, you can toss them in the compost bin, rather than putting another piece of plastic in the trash.
