FEATURED | To the Point

TO THE POINT

School Liaison 355th Force Support Squadron

ELIZABETH FLEMING What do you do as CYES School Liaison? The CYES School Liaison is the face of the installation for educators and parents. I am the SME for the Military Interstate Children’s Compact (MIC3), assisting with compliance in enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility and graduation requirements. I collaborate and communicate with the local community by attending school district Governing Board meetings, community programs/events and working directly with individual schools and districts. I work with Operation Homefront, providing school supplies and backpacks during the Back to School Backpack Brigade and the Holiday Toy Drive. I also share resources and information with families and schools. What do you enjoy most about it? I enjoy helping families the most. Helping a family make the best decision for their child’s education means so much. What is so special about the space in your office that you have created for families? What resources are you able to offer? I have established a resource and children’s library, along with a loan locker and computer lab specifically for our Homeschool families. The CYES School Liaison is your “go to” for your children’s educational needs.

I have many resources such as transitioning with your children, kindergarten readiness, Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) information, information on public, private, charter schools and so much more. What do you wish parents would know about their children’s educational options here at DM? Parents have many educational choices to choose from. The local area has public charter school options as well as public school and private school options. The state of Arizona offers Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) funds to help pay for homeschooling or private school. We also have 2 schools located on DMAFB. Borman K8 falls under Tucson Unified School District and Sonoran Science Academy-DM is a free Charter school educating 6th – 12th grade. I encourage parents to look at schools vs. districts. There are some wonderful options available in the local community. Parents are encouraged to see what will fit their needs. Favorite cactus? :) My favorite Cactus in Arizona is the Prickly Pear. The blooms are gorgeous and we have a family of quail that lays eggs in ours every year.
