DON’T JUST THANK A FARMER, BE A FRIEND

When looking at a farmer, the image that comes to mind is probably a man, maybe wearing jeans and a plaid shirt, most likely a cowboy hat too. A farmer is often stereotyped as a “tough person.” Though, yes, farmers may look tough from the outside, and they may very well be, they deal with things privately and encounter struggles that those outside of agriculture cannot imagine, just so they can provide food, clothing and shelter for our world.

It may surprise you that those involved in agriculture have a suicide rate higher than any other profession. These problems have troubled agricultural communities across the nation, but the Midwest, given its extreme weather and falling prices, is especially hit hard. Across the Midwest, more than 450 farmers have taken their lives between 2014 and 2018 (Wedell 1). The real number is likely to be much higher, as this data was collected before the current pandemic, which has again hammered agricultural markets. A study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the overall rates of agricultural suicides had increased by 40% in less than two decades.

Farming is a physically dangerous career due to the everyday obstacles and manual labor. Most days, the list of chores is longer than the amount of sunlight. In turn, farmers are focused on getting their tasks done more than anything else, which is physically demanding. Since the body has little time to rest, the work taxes the mind. Day in and day out, farmers provide resources that are used all day long by everybody. In 2010, data showed that one farmer could provide for 73 people, making farming one of the most demanding professions in the world.

House Completes Successful First Half of Legislative Session JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – Members of the Missouri House and Senate will be conducting legislative business from their home districts this week. This is an opportunity for elected officials to attend events, meetings, and conferences with constituents from home, rather than spending the entire week away in Jefferson City. While I am back in the district, please note that my legislative staff will still be in the office and monitoring communications. If you need to reach me directly or require assistance, you can still call my office and we will be happy to assist you. My colleagues and I will return to Jefferson City for the second half of session on Monday, March 21st. When we return, House members will focus our efforts on approving the Fiscal Year 2023 state operating budget. The state spending plan must be approved by both the House and Senate by Friday, May 6. We will also work to pass a number of other legislative priorities before the legislative session concludes on Friday, May 13.

Before adjournment, the House worked diligently to pass a legislative measure that ensures patients in healthcare facilities will maintain the right to have visits from loved ones and essential support persons throughout their stay. The No Patient Left Alone Act (HBs 2116 and 1861) empowers a patient to select at least three essential support persons, in addition to a spouse or legal guardian. The Act also allows a spouse or guardian and at least one other person to be present with the patient at all times during their time in the hospital. It will also require long-term care facilities to allow compassionate care visitation as needed by their residents.

This legislation is a huge win for families across Missouri, especially those that were forced to be apart from loved ones in the past two years.

Don’t forget about the scholarship opportunity from the Women Legislators of Missouri!

The submission deadline for the scholarship is Thursday, March 24th.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Transportation is one of the top problems facing older adults in Northwest Missouri.

To help meet this need, Young At Heart Resources Area Agency on Aging created Provide-A-Ride (PAR). This program assists individuals who are at least 60 years of age with non-emergency medical trips, including dental, hearing and vision appointments. However, we are desperately in need of more volunteer drivers to meet the needs of our clients.
