Both commencement ceremonies were held at the Ketcham Community Center on the Main campus located in Trenton. Commencement was also live-streamed at piratesdigitialmedia.com. 2022 marked the 95th NCMC commencement ceremony with 448 degrees and certificates awarded to 407 individual graduates - 130 associate in arts, 23 associate in arts in teaching, 148 associate in applied science, two associate in general studies, five associate in science, and 140 certificates. Distinguished Alumna Phyllis Jackson provided the morning ceremony address. In her remarks, she praised the graduates for their tenacity and hard work and encouraged them to leave the world in a better place than they found it. In her re-

marks, she said, “No adequate words can tell you how proud I am of you as students….all of you coming together to make today happen, to realize what could easily have just been abandoned, now actually has become a celebration of standing strong and moving forward, around, over, even though the difficulties thrown at you.” She also said, “How could anyone have ever doubted the tenacity of you as you moved forward from March 2020 to this glorious celebration today? Your Pirate blood rings true; you will not be overcome.” Medical Director, Breast Care Center at Liberty Hospital and Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, Dr. Amy Patel, was the speaker for the afternoon ceremony. In her remarks, she provided the graduates with points of advice to help them as they enter the workforce. In her speech, she said, “stay the course, even if you fail along the way. It’s okay if your career path takes an unexpected turn and is not straight. Do not get discouraged; reflect, regroup, and fail forward.” She also said, “You have shown great courage and fortitude to get where you are today. Be proud. Be grateful. Be fearless going forward. The best for all of you is yet to come.”

Trenton Park Board Discusses Policies, Hears About Mayor’s Proclamation The Trenton Park Board met on Wednesday, May 4 at City Hall with 6 members and Mayor Linda Crooks in attendance. President Curtis Crawford called the meeting to order, previous meeting minutes were reviewed and accepted. Board Member Gary Schuett brought a motion to the board to accept two policies that he had written and had been reviewed by City Attorney Tara Walker. The first policy was for placement of security cameras in various locations in the city parks to help deter

vandalism and theft. The second policy was to establish a reward system for information leading to an arrest or conviction of persons who vandalize or steal from the Trenton Park Department. John Hamilton seconded the motion and all were in favor. The pool committee reported that they are still needing a Pool Manager and more lifeguards for the Trenton Family Aquatic Center before the start of the season. The board agreed to advertise the positions again with a final date to apply of May 16 as

that is the date they would need to start the process of filling the pool in order for it to open as usual on Memorial Day Weekend. If there are no pool manager applications by May 16 the board will call a special meeting to determine how to proceed. The Park Superintendent reports that the grounds and facilities committees are working on installing new equipment in area parks but the rainy weather has caused delays. He is also working with insurance to figure out steps to replace a set of bleachers at

the fairgrounds that were flipped over and damaged in a recent wind storm. Mayor Linda Crooks has signed a proclamation declaring May 21, 2022 as “Kids to Parks Day” in Trenton. “Kids to Parks Day” is an annual event organized by the National Park Trust to empower kids and encourage families to go outdoors and visit local parks, public lands and waters. Republican-Times News Survey Please help us determine the content of this community newspaper moving forward. Obviously we only have so many pages and employees to cover events, build the pages and deliver the news to you so we need to ask specific questions to determine what news makes the final cut. Obviously we would like to cover every event but we cannot. As you answer the following questions, remember that at the end of the day, some events will not get coverage unless champions for that content submit the information. The categories we are considering are: Sports, school information, civic/volunteer organizations, local government, Church and Religion, Opinion/Letters, Business, cartoons/puzzles/ horoscopes, obits and crime/public records. Please rate these categories from 1-10. One is the most important and ten is the least important to you.

OP/ED FIVE POINTS WENDELL LENHART

PROPERTY UPKEEP IMPORTANT TO COMMUNITY It seems that Spring is finally here to stay and the time has come to get outside and start cleaning things up at our homes and businesses from the winter season. Most residents do a pretty good job of cleaning up and improving their property from year to year but there are always some who don’t decide to take pride in their property. I’ve never understood why someone would not take care of what is probably the biggest investment of their lives. And keeping this big investment in great shape only enhances and increases it’s value. And, with the recent increases in real estate values, improving your property would pay off more than ever now. Unfortunately, some people won’t take care of their property in a responsible manner and it takes action by the city to make things happen. I appreciate the action taken by the city for many years to make owners clean up their properties. The building and nuisance board meets monthly and hears updates from the city’s code enforcement officer. Property which is in disrepair or that may have been damaged by fire, moves through various stages, from declaration of a nuisance, findings of fact, to certificate of dangerous building. All during the process, the code enforcement officer is in contact with the owners to get them to make needed repairs and improvements. Many times repairs are completed and the properties can be removed from the process but other times, too many, the issue has to be sent to court for prosecution. The city sets aside funds each year for demolition of derelict properties and property owners can participate by providing part of the cost of demolition. The program works very well but is limited by the amount of funds the city is able to fund the program with. I appreciate the work that goes into trying to improve the appearance of our community and it really pays off for our community in many ways such as increased property values, business attraction and retention and new residents wanting to relocate here. In 2021, the police department investigated 104 nuisances including 48 for grass and weeds, 42 for trash and debris, 13 for unregistered vehicles and one for open storage of a vehicle. At the end of the year, 19 were still active, with 63 cleared, 22 referred for prosecution and 25 remaining on the court docket as of Dec. 31. I hope the city will be able to continue the good work which is being done and hope more can be done because it is so important to our community. Local governments are starting to see federal funds become available through Covid relief efforts and maybe some of those funds could be used to expand and improve this worthwhile program.

If things were as easy for us as the A-Team Growing Pains of Newspaper ownership

Jamey Honeycutt Publisher Remember George Peppard, the leader of the 80’s A-Team? Once the fire fight (where no one was injured) ended and his team was successful, he would light up a cigar and proclaim, “I love it when a plan comes together!” If only it was that simple, eh? In September, when we bought your newspaper we thought this would be a slow glide toward adjusting the content, finding community sponsors and building the shopper network to support the entire operation. After all, we had a veteran staff and my wife and I would use our 50 years of experience to guide the

team to new success and live happily ever after. Right? Mmmmmm, not so much. Shortly after we sealed the deal, the economy hit the skids (Thanks Uncle Joe) and finding employees became harder than finding a unicorn. We lot almost 100 years of experienced staff due to various reasons and costs to produce a paper and shopper went through the roof. Now, I am not making excuses as I survived at least three recessions through my newspaper career but this really was a perfect storm and I am only giving you this update to let you know that we are still dedicated to serving you… .it just might be a rough ride for a few weeks. With Ronda and Seth leaving to pursue different but equally noble pursuits of family and less stress, we were left with a huge gap to fill. I am so happy that a few individuals have stepped up to help. While I began my career as an editor and page designer, I was SO rusty it actually caused me to doubt if I could do it or not. Frankly, the youth sports

stars I covered in my first few weeks were the difference between me flaming out and succeeding. I had so much fun covering your golf, baseball and tennis Bulldogs that I was energized that we might actually pull this off against the odds. The folks I have met at meetings, sporting events and the post office have bolstered my spirits and I truly believe that with enough time to stabilize and right the ship, we will be successful. Thank you so much for the hundreds of you that have filled out your survey on news preferences. Ward Circle Has Luncheon; Studies Lydia Of The Bible Betty and Beverly Wimer hosted the Ward Circle on Tuesday, May 3, for a noon luncheon at their home. There were four members in attendance and one guest, Bev Wimer. After the meal, President Talma Joiner opened the business meeting with everyone repeating the CWF Prayer. She gave the opening meditation entitled “We are Special” based on Genesis. Betty Wimer gave the secretary/treasurer’s report. In June, checks will be sent to the special CWF project the group supports, ministerial scholarships. Janice Stimpson reported on cards sent last month. Sympathy cards went to Sonja Wimer, Joyce Cutsinger and Janet Vaughn. Congratulations were sent to Randy Bowden and get well cards went to Pastor Tim, Esther Ricketts and Betty Austinson. Members signed a birthday card for Jane Garnett. Martha Maloney has recently moved from her home into an apartment. Mrs. Joiner had a recent phone call from Jeanne Jones who now lives out of the area. The Ward Circle is responsible for flowers for the sanctuary in August.

Mrs. Joiner will host the June meeting at her home. She will also give the devotion. Betty Wimer gave the lesson on the New Testament woman, Lydia, who became the first European woman convert to Christianity. Lydia became a stalwart supporter of Paul and the other disciples and opened her home to them when they came to Philippi. She was a dealer in purple cloth and appeared to have influence in her community. Purple cloth was very expensive and only the most wealthy could afford to have a garment in that color. The curtains in the temple were purple with some scarlet and blue which came from the same dying process. Purple dye was made in two ways at that time. The madder plant made a dye that tended to fade. The best source was the marine mollusk called a Murex. Ten thousand of the small snail creatures were needed for one dying vat. Coastlines in the Mediterranean area still have great piles of thousands of the shells from the dying process. The meeting closed with the CWF Benediction.

NCMC Advisory Board Addresses Community Needs Helping people and community betterment are the driving focus for NCMC President Dr. Lenny. Klaver and his Community Advisory Board. The Board itself has been together for 5 years with the goal of helping the Trenton community. “It’s all about Community betterment.” Klaver said, “Members of the board can bring ideas to the table and talk about new initiatives in the community.” Subjects the council discusses include new jobs, housing and recreational programs to better partner with Trenton, improving the community. The Advisory Board is a diverse group consisting of members from different parts of the community. Members include Kasey Bailey, THS Principal, Chad Boyd, Trenton Hy-Vee manager, and Melissa Purkepile, realtor. Other members include Dan Wiebers, Rebecca Steinhoff, Cara McClellan, Scott Sharp, Jordan Ferguson, Phil Ray, Kelley Hillerman, and Travis Elbert. “It’s a round table environment where we can work to make the community better” said Klaver. The board's last meeting took place on April 28 with multiple

topics for the board to discuss, ranging from employment possibilities, to housing, youth programs, and just cleaning up the community. Community betterment, in particular, was very important to the board. “ A lot of progress has been made. Give a lot of credit to the previous mayor and our current mayor for helping the clean up” added Klaver. Also on the agenda at the board's previous meeting was ‘That one thing.’ “ At the end we asked what was that one thing we could get for this community and what would it be, and a majority of the answer was getting more good affordable housing” said Klaver. The parting thought from Dr. Klaver was how the advisory board can mesh and help with other groups within the community. “ We are involved with other groups like the TDIA NCMV. I view this advisory board as a think tank in order to make the community better”. The Community Advisory Board will have its next meeting in the Fall of 2022 and will continue to help improve our local community.

Extension Notes by University of Missouri Extension BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAMS FOR BEEF BULLS Shawn Deering, MU Extension Livestock Specialist Many northwest Missouri beef producers will be turning breeding bulls out to pasture within the next few weeks. It is surprising to me that a large number of producers will do this without having a breeding soundness exam performed on their herd sires. Breeding bulls can and do go infertile for numerous reasons. The last thing a beef producer wants is a bull that is not capable of doing his job. That is why it is recommended that every bull pass a breeding soundness exam just prior to the breeding season. Breeding soundness exams are a screening procedure to eliminate bulls that have a high probability of being infertile. They include both a physical exam and semen evaluation and should be performed by an experienced veterinarian. The physical exam includes several parts. The veterinarian will examine the penis and look for any abnormalities. They will also palpate the scrotum and testicles. The scrotum should be pen-

dulous but well supported and the testicles should be firm and of uniform size and shape. Scrotal circumference can also be taken at this time and yearling bulls should have a minimum measurement of 32 cm2. The veterinarian will also do a rectal palpation of the internal sex organs to make sure they have proper development and size. The final part of the physical exam is to evaluate the bull’s conformation. Bulls must have sound feet and legs and also good vision to adequately service cows. Semen is evaluated for volume, concentration, motility and morphology. Bulls must pass all areas that are evaluated in order to confirm their breeding capability. We are all busy and none of us are looking for additional things to do. Conducting a breeding soundness exam on your bull(s) might seem like another time-consuming task. However, you certainly do not want a set of open cows this fall because you turned out a bull that was not capable of siring a calf crop.

by the Trenton Ministerial Alliance For Love of the Son

by Nevin Curtis, pastor, South Evans Christian Church “This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased” - Matthew 3:17 Whether real or urban legend the story is told of a wealthy art aficionado and philanthropist who, with his only son, would move from art auction to art auction accumulating a collection of some of the most desired and valuable paintings in the world. Eventually his son was called to serve in England’s army during WWII. In the course of his service the young man was killed in battle and his father never recovered from the grief he felt for the rest of his life. After the war, a knock came at his door and a young man presented the art collector with a picture of his son that he himself had painted. He said that the man’s son had died saving the lives of several soldiers including himself. The old man cherished this rough painting until he died. After his passing an auction was scheduled for his sumptuous collection and greatest of collectors from all over the world were there to bid on a collection that was worth millions. It was anticipated that this would be one of the most expensive art auctions

ever organized At the beginning of the auction the auctioneer had been directed by the man’s will to sell the painting of his son. Boos went through the audience when this “rough worthless” painting was inserted into this prestigious auction. No one would bid on it until one man who happened to be the butler for the art collector, with tears running down his cheeks (he had loved the boy almost as much as his father) bid a mere 20 pounds, which was all he had. Since no one else had bid, the butler got the painting, at which point the auctioneer announced, to the shock and chagrin of all those gathered, that the auction was now over. The announcer told everyone that the will clearly stated that “whoever gets the son gets the entire estate.” Isn’t it amazing that God says the same thing? Whoever receives His Son gets everything God has to give, the entire estate of heaven is the inheritance of all who believe. More than that, those who believe not only inherit the estate but eternal life as well. The Gospel of John says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”

General Assembly Approves State Operating Budget JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – It has been a busy week in Jefferson City, and the House worked diligently to beat the clock by passing appropriations bills by the May 6th deadline. As such, lawmakers have given final approval to a state spending plan that allocates record levels of funding to education, as well as to vital infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, ports, water systems, and broadband. The approved budget plan also provides funding for programs that assist the state’s most vulnerable citizens, increases support for law enforcement and public safety, invests in the state’s workforce, and provides funding for a one-time economic recovery tax credit. The House approved nearly $10.4 billion in funding for K-12 education, which is an increase of nearly $2.9 billion when compared to last year’s budget. A large portion of that is due to an influx of federal funding. The final version of the education spending package includes a boost of $214 million for school transportation, and the plan also takes significant steps to improve teacher pay in Missouri. It includes an additional $21.7 million to provide voluntary grants to local school districts, which can use the funds to help raise minimum teacher pay to $38,000 annually. Districts that opt in will see the majority of the increase funded by the state with the remainder funded by the district. The budget also allocates approximately $37.4 million to revive the Career Ladder program, which allows school districts to supplement the pay of teachers who take on additional duties. Another highlight of the budget is a strong investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure. The spending plan allocates nearly $148 million in new funding from the State Road Fund, which is used for maintenance and construction for roads and bridges. The spending plan also includes $100 million for rural roads around the state that have fallen into disrepair. Additionally, the plan allocates $75 million in federal funds for the Transportation Cost-Share Program that partners with local municipalities to fund road repairs. The budget also supports efforts to expand broadband access in Missouri by including $49.2 million in federal funds for the Rural Broadband Grant Program and $250 million in federal funding for the broadband infrastructure program. These are record numbers in terms of infrastructure funding, and I am looking forward to seeing the improvements that rural communities can make with additional money to complete ongoing projects. As always, it’s an honor to serve you. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call my office at (573) 751-0246 or email me at Randy.Railsback@house.mo.gov. Jerren Sears of Hale, MO, a North Central Missouri College graduate, was honored by the Missouri Community College Association for being named to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Missouri Academic Team. This honor is bestowed to the state’s top community college students. Jerren was recognized for his accomplishment at the annual MCCA PTK and Student Leadership recognition held on April 28th at Stephens College, where PTK was founded, in Columbia, MO. “Jerren’s leadership is apparent within the classroom and in his community,” said Maryellen Harman, NCMC PTK Advisor. “We enjoyed his stories about his work in wildlife conservation and learned more about his internships and classes at Missouri Western State University. I especially appreciated hearing how NCMC helped prepare Jerren for his four-year degree and learning how we might further support students as they prepare to transfer. It is a privilege to work with great students like Jerren in the classroom and with Phi Theta Kappa.” MCCA is Missouri’s largest advocacy group for community colleges. “MCCA is where the state’s 12 community colleges come together to share ideas and advance common goals.” -www.mccatoday.org.

Dear Annie: I recently separated from my husband, and we are in the process of a divorce. The relationship was a bit toxic. But it was my choice to leave, and I left for my own mental health, as I struggle with anxiety and depression and self-esteem issues. I have reconnected with a man I dated a few years ago. He is so sweet, and he has told me he has always loved me. I told him I wanted to take things slow. But he was so amazing I found myself falling hard. We made plans a couple of times to go out of town for a weekend, but then I wouldn't hear from him on those days we were going to go out. I would hear from him on that Sunday, and he would tell me things like, "My sister needed me," or, "A friend got in a fight, and I had to help him." But after that, he would message me several times a day every day. Another weekend he went missing, I was very worried, thinking the worst. He then told me he had an addiction problem with crack that has been going on and off for 20 years. He

said he stopped for many years but then, one day, he started again. He is going to meetings and getting help and is determined to beat it. My concern is I've done some research, and it doesn't look good. I've read that addicts will tell lies and do whatever they possibly can to get what they want. I'm so scared. I honestly believe he is a good person and he means it when he says he wants to get clean. But I see a therapist for my mental health issues and she has said that it is a very bad idea to get involved with him; since I just got out of a toxic relationship, I shouldn't enter a new one with a guy that is too dealing with so many issues. Part of me knows she's right, but the other part tells me he can get past this and we can be happy together. Please tell me what to do. - Cracked Dear Cracked: Choosing to get involved with somebody struggling with addiction would be choosing a treacherous and painful path. You have to know what you're signing up for. Tell your quasi-boyfriend that you are not pre-

pared for a relationship unless and until he receives the help he needs. Until then, cut ties. Yes, recovery is a long shot, but stranger things have happened. Dear Annie: I am writing in response to "Trying To Heal," who is struggling to forgive her abusive mother. I am in a similar situation and found the book "Forgiving What You Can't Forget" by Lysa TerKeurst. It gave me a great perspective on why some people act the way they do and how to go about forgiving them, even when they aren't sorry for what they did. I highly recommend! - Been There, Felt That Dear Been There: Thank you for the helpful resource; I'm sure that many readers can benefit from the wisdom this book has to offer.

Germany loses steam

Alley Oop® by Joey Alison Sayers and Jonathan Lemon

Germany is Europe’s industrial engine — and it’s not firing on all cylinders. That’s the message from the latest numbers on German industrial production, down 3.9% in March from the month before and 3.3% from a year ago. The downbeat data combines all the forces that are blunting Europe’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Russia’s war in Ukraine is sending energy prices through the roof and spreading uncertainty, which has put business decisions on hold. Meanwhile, logjams in getting parts and raw materials are dragging on.

For Better or For Worse® by Lynn Johnson

The ifo Institute in Munich says more than 80% of the industrial companies it surveyed reported facing bottlenecks. It’s a downer for Europe as a whole. Despite consumers having backlogs of cash to spend from the pandemic, external woes keep intervening to postpone a stronger economic upswing. Economists at Berenberg bank see growth for the 19 countries that use the euro stagnating at around zero in the second quarter before picking up in the second half of the year. That’s if nothing else — such as a cutoff of Russian natural gas — delivers another blow.
