R-9 Hires Superintendent The Trenton R-IX Board of Education has selected Mr. Daniel Gott as the new Trenton R-IX Superintendent. Mr. Gott will begin his duties as superintendent on July 1, 2022. Mr. Gott most recently has served as the Trenton Middle School principal for six years. His previous positions include serving as high school and middle school social studies teacher. “I am dedicated to the education profession and this community.” Mr. Gott said, “I work hard to build relationships with students, staff, colleagues, and parents. Throughout my time with the Trenton RIX School District, I have been able to not only witness the qualities of a good administrator, but I have been able to put those qualities into practice as well by leading by example, creating a positive yet structured environment for staff and students, and inspiring students to become productive citizens and life-long learners while supporting the educators instructing them.” Gott received a Bachelor of Science in History from Missouri Western State University as well as a Masters of Education in Administration and a Specialist in Education from William Woods University. Mr. Gott and his family reside in Trenton. He and his wife Abby, a Title reading teacher at Rissler Elementary School, have

three children: daughter Vivian will be in the third grade at Rissler Elementary School; son Hank will be in first grade at Rissler Elementary School; and daughter Edie is two years old. Mrs. Dorothy Taul, Trenton R-9 Board of Education President, stated, “The Board believes that Mr. Gott displays the qualities to lead the district forward. He has proven himself in the past as an excellent teacher and principal with his leading by example model.” Gott will be replacing Mr. Rob Deaver who is serving as the interim superintendent throughout the month of June.
Park Board Approves Sign Bids The Trenton Park Board met on Wednesday, June 1 at City Hall with 5 board members, Park Director David Shockley and City Council Liaison Lance Otto present. President Curtis Crawford called the meeting to order and minutes were reviewed and approved. There was discussion and approval of the only 2 bids received for replacing signage at the Rock Barn and Van Meter Park. Greg Sharp, who has installed other signs for the city, submitted a bid of $5,254 for the Rock Barn and $3,230 for Van Meter Park; this includes material and labor. The board had budgeted $10,500 to replace both signs, so the bids came in under budget and the Rock Barn sign will have rock similar to the building itself along with a planter. President Curtis Crawford gave kudos to everyone who helped share the word about needing lifeguards for the pool. Deann Roland, who moved to Trenton about a year ago from Nebraska has been hired as the new Pool Manager, she is currently working on getting certified so that she may train and certify lifeguards next year here in Trenton. There are 20 lifeguards who should

all be certified by opening day which is Saturday June 4th at 1pm. Three returning lifeguards Ali Westcott, Shay Westerhof and Ava Simpson will be the Assistant Managers this year. A couple of changes being made this year are that pool passes will be cards and daily pool passes will be a different colored wristband each day. Park Director David Shockley reported that the pool pumps are all working, a coupler that was leaking on the water slide has been replaced and the inside of the pool has been power washed to be ready to fill. Green Hills Recreation has games scheduled every day throughout the month of June and soccer starts on Saturday June 4th. The park department is busy painting lines and preparing the fields for games. Mowing is being done at the parks between the rain days. The park department received 2 trees from Barnes Greenhouse that have been planted at Moberly Park. Work on the downtown park at 5 points includes cutting down a tree that is dying and getting the cameras installed to help with deterring vandalism. Mr. Crawford encourages people to please report
any mischievous activity at the parks. There has been some graffiti vandalism in the restroom at Burleigh Grimes Field. The park department is working on cleaning that up along with preparing the field for June 15th when we will be hosting a Chillicothe Mudcats game. A reward fund has been established for individuals reporting vandalism in the parks which results in an arrest or conviction. Anyone who wishes to donate to the fund can contact Green Hills Rural Development. Mr. Shockley and Mr. Crawford reported that the Recreational Trail Grant that the department applied for with DNR back in February is being reviewed and winners will be announced in September. If the department is awarded the grant, work on the walking trail may begin later this year, which will include removing the parking spots near the baseball field by the trail. In a closed session for personell matters, the board unanimously approved a 5% salary increase for park superintendent David Shockley and assistant superintendent Hunter Trask. Part-time employees with a year of service will receive [See Park, Page 3]

A special election was held in April with write-in names submitted, but Mr. Sawyer said he has spoken with those whose names were submitted with no one wishing to fill those positions. The commissioner request that anyone wishing to fill one of these positions please call the County Clerk’s office. Bids were opened for the construction of the bridge on SW 86th Ave. Shannon Howe with Howe Co., LLC will take the bids and check that all information needed is included in each bids. Summer Ball in Full Swing Despite the rain, Green Hills Recreation Association (GHRA) summer tee-ball, baseball, and softball are underway. The recreation leagues began at the start of May and continue until the first of July. Several Trenton teams are in each division of tee-ball, baseball machine pitch, minor league, little league, and junior/senior league, and 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U for softball. The Trenton leagues run under the Harrison County Softball/Baseball Association and compete against one another as well as neighboring towns such as Bethany, Princeton, Gallatin, Eagleville, and Pattonsburg/Gilman City. GHRA recruits volunteers to help coach, keep scorebooks, do pitch counts, run scoreboards, and serve as base umpires. The league also employs several in-
dividuals to umpire each Trenton game and provides the umpire equipment. Area businesses, individuals, and organizations are sponsors of teams and leagues and provide monetary assistance to help not only summer ball, but also other recreational sports GHRA offers. GHRA provides each player a team shirt/jersey, team helmets, team bats, balls, catching gear, and catcher’s glove. GHRA also provides scholarships for families needing financial assistance to cover the registration fee. GHRA is dedicated to providing youth and adults of the Green Hills area opportunities to participate in recreational activities and is organized by a volunteer board of 15 people. Missoula Children’s Theatre To Be In Gallatin Gallatin Theater League is bringing the Missoula Children’s Theatre back to Gallatin July 11-16. The show that will be presented is “Hansel and Gretel”. All children between the ages of entering 1st grade up to entering 12th grade this fall are encouraged to audition. Auditions will be held at 10 a.m. on July 11. Practices will start that afternoon and each day from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., depending on the role you are given. Performances will be 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. The Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 40 years now
from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. A tour team arrives in a given town with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50-60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented, one on Friday and one on Saturday. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales . . . a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Also included in the res-
idency are three enrichment workshops presented by the Tour Actor/Directors. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project. MCT's mission is the development of life skills in children through participation in the performing arts. The Missoula Children's Theatre is based in Missoula, MT. For questions about the show and how to participate, you can message the Gallatin Theater League on their Facebook page, call Amy McMahon at 660605-1718 or email her at amywood42@hotmail.com.
Constitution Day Camp Returns To Gallatin The community of Gallatin is preparing for a second season of the Constitution Day Camp. Organizers are looking for volunteers to lead small activity groups, to represent historical figures, and to help with logistical support for the camp. The recipient of a national award for community service, Constitution Day Camp targets 7-14 year-old children and consists of a funfilled week visiting the American Revolutionary War period. Small group activities involving the culture, the issues, the
founders, events, and founding documents (Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights) will make it a highlight of summer for children in the area. Lessons, crafts, games, music and snacks are designed to help increase their understanding and appreciation of this period of American history. Friday night the children present a delightful musical for their parents showing what they have learned. Constitution Day Camps have been held all over the country and community involvement is the key to their success. At this time,
Extension Notes by University of Missouri Extension SURVIVING TOUGH TIMES Shawn Deering, MU Extension Livestock Specialist Most producers in northwest Missouri never had the opportunity to work with or meet Eldon Cole. Eldon was a Livestock Specialist for University of Missouri Extension in southwest Missouri for 58 years. Eldon passed away in April of this year. He had tremendous impact on the beef industry of Missouri and will be greatly missed. In his last newsletter, he included an article on surviving tough times. I thought it was fitting to share his nuggets of wisdom. Pasture and forage management equals 60-70% of the cost of production Develop a practical grazing system of four to eight pastures. If you are a backgrounder, a few more pastures will help boost carrying capacity and forage utilization and increase overall profitability per unit of land. If you are locked into a unit of land for a number of years, converting to the novel endophyte fescue is something to consider. The next best course of action is to introduce quality

legumes into your Kentucky31 pastures or hay-fields. Hold off on nitrogen fertilization in the spring. Soil test and follow the recommendations. If you harvest hay, do so with an eye towards quality rather than quantity. Store quality hay for protection from the weather. Lease pasture if you need to expand. Use a sharp pencil as “bigger is not always better.” Intentionally plan to stockpile fescue each August – September. Feed adequately but economically. Consider co-product feeds like soybean hulls, corn gluten feed and corn distiller’s grains. Get more for properly presented calves, yearlings and cull cows and bulls Be there when your cattle go through the ring. Talk to market reps ahead of the sale and share information on what and when you are selling. Visit with them after the sale and seek their views on your cattle. Bunch your calf crop so you will have at least 12 to 15 calves in a sale group. Con-
the Town Board has reserved Dockery Park (611 Park Street, Gallatin) for the week of July 25-29 as a venue. To find out more about volunteer opportunities and what you can do to help, contact Rosanna Andersen at constitutiondayc a m p @ yahoo.com. sider co-mingling with other “like cattle” to increase your numbers. Age and source verify your calves. Work towards selling a pot load. Castrate bulls and implant non-replacement animals at least once unless you are targeting an all-natural or organic niche market. Consider cooperatively purchasing inputs with your neighbors or family members. Develop a business plan for your cattle operation and your farm. Other little things that add up Keep track of what goes on day-to-day (Redbook, computer programs, etc.). Observe and walk through your cattle regularly. This gentles them and helps you spot problems quickly (lameness, bad eyes, cows returning to heat, calf scours, etc.). Develop a good animal identification system for within herd use. Don’t forget the benefits of crossbreeding. A crossbred cow will wean 25% more calf weight over her life as compared to a purebred cow. EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) work amazingly in the long haul. Learn to understand and use them. DNA tests will be important when blended with EPDs. Growing and putting forages through beef cattle is Missouri’s competitive advantage. Good luck.

TPD Called To Fire June 6 The Trenton Fire Department was called to the scene of an incident at 1000 Laclede St. around 10 a.m. on June 6. A semi and trailer made contact with a low hanging electric line on Eash 10th St. causing a utility pole to break, which pulled the overhead line from a house owned by Nathan and Heather Rorebeck. Trenton Municipal Utilities was called to the scene to dis-
connect the power to the overhead line. Fire fighters were able to use a fire extinguisher to extinguish a small fire on the exterior basement door. Firefighters also removed a small amount of siding to check for fire extension. The TFD was assisted by the Grundy County Rural Fire Department, Trenton Police Department, TMU and Grundy County EMS.

COMMUNITY Go & Learn FCE Has Program On Flower Arranging
Students Enjoy Tie-Dye Project
Summer school students in fourth and fifth grade made tie-dye shirts. Pictured are Megan Lowrey and Reese Jarivah.
The Go and Learn FCE met June 3 at Hardee’s for lunch and a business meeting. President Lana Snider presided over the meeting, with members repeating the pledge to the flag and the club collect. Mrs. Snider had a “thought for the day”. Roll call was answered by “Where You Like to Vacation.” The treasurer’s report and minutes from the last meeting were read. Old and new business were discussed. A report was made from the district meeting on May 2 that was very in-
formative. All of the Northwest District Counties tested chicken wing recipes to be judged for the “Today’s Farmer” magazine. Mary Lynn Griffin showed her beautiful hummingbird wall hanging and bag she had made. After the meeting was adjourned, the group toured Vintage Vines for a program on flower arranging and information on different flowers. The next meeting will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 8 at Cross Hall on the NCMC campus.

Summer school students in fourth and fifth grades recently attended a presentation on Creatures of Missouri. The students were allowed to hold snakes during the presentation.
Sullivan County Reservoir Project Is Topic Of Rotary Programs The East Locust Creek Reservoir project in Sullivan County was the topic of a program presented at the Thursday, June 2 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Brian Upton presided at the
meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Jackie Soptic was the program chairman. Brad Scott, general manager of the project, updated club members about construction of the 2,300-acare public lake which will be
managed by the Missouri Water Commission. Approximately 4,700 acres of land was acquired from 82 landowners for the project, with a 1,200-acre strip buffer to mitigate endangered species in the area. A TIF is to be created around
the lake to allow for investment back into the lake, which would be done in phases. A permit to construct the dam has not yet been obtained, but for the past eight years ravines have been cleaned out and 77 structures have been de-

molished in preparation for the dam work. Roads are being constructed with grant funds and 87 acres of trees have been cleared to create a crossing. Once the permit is received, it will take three years to complete construction of the dam and another four years for rainfall to fill the lake, which will provide water sources for 10 area counties as well as recreational opportunities. The club was offered a tour of the site and Scott said email updates will be provided. During the business meeting, members were

told June 24 is the final day to provide funds to the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” project. The club will be responsible for putting U.S. flags around the courthouse on Flag Day (June 14) and will also place flags on the Ninth Street railroad bridge. Members are to meet at 7 a.m. at the flag storage building (located next to the old county jail). The June 9 program will be presented by Sarah Porter of the Grundy County Emergency Management Services, who will talk about the county ambulance service.

Extension Notes by University of Missouri Extension FEEDING AND ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS Kathi Mecham Field Specialist in Horticulture The avian influenza (AI) has some residents questioning if it is safe to feed hummingbirds and other birds this year. The answer is yes, according to Robert Piece, Associate Extension Professor in Fisheries and Wildlife for the University of Missouri Extension. Dr. Pierce added, “Evidence does not indicate at this time that widespread removal of feeders is necessary or an effective way of reducing the spread.” In addition, songbirds do not appear to be major carriers of the virus. As of early May, the flu virus numbers were down, and since the AI virus does not tolerate high temperatures the numbers should stay down for the summer. Pierce mentioned there is potential for a return of the virus in the fall when temperatures drop. Besides providing hummingbirds with a sugar water mixture, there are many plants to add to the land-
scape that provide the small birds with nectar sources. The following plant list includes annuals, perennial, shrubs, vines and trees. Hummingbirds prefer tubular shaped flowers to feed on, they use their long tongues to retrieve the nectar. There are many native species that fit the bill to keep the birds well feed. Annuals - a few are native but will not over-winter in all areas of Missouri. Many annuals bloom profusely offering a food source throughout the season • Petunia (Petunia x hybrida) • Cigar plant (Cuphea ignea) Native • Flowering tobacco (Nicotania spp.) Native • Snapdragon (Antirrhinum spp.) • Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis) Native Perennials - There are plenty of native species to choose from. Choose species that bloom at different times of the season to always have nectar available for the birds.
• Bee balm (Monarda spp.) Native • Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) Native • Rose verbena (Glandularia canadensis) Native • Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) Native • Copper or red iris (Iris fulva) Native • Garden or smooth phlox (Phlox spp.) Native Shrubs - Provide good protection as well as nectar from the blossoms. Choose plants that bloom from early spring to late summer. • Rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) Native • Weigelia (Weigela florida) • Flowering quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) • Roseshell azalea (Rhododendron prinophyllum) Native •P e p p e r b u s h (Clethra spp.) Native Trees - hummingbirds fly high in the trees for the blossoms, building nests and for protection. All three trees listed are native species. • Red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) • Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) • Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) Don’t forget the vining plants, they offer some of the hummers favorite flowers. Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), passion flower (Passiflora spp.), and
trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans) are all native with red and orange tubular flowers. A few more things to consider when encouraging the hummingbirds • the little birds need water too for drinking and for baths. The water in birdbaths should be shallow. Add a few rocks or tilt the basin to allow for a shallow area. • If using a sugar-water solution, make sure to change it often, bacteria or mold can develop that can be dangerous for the birds. • Hummingbirds need protein too and insects are a big part of their diet especially during nesting and feeding young birds. A female hummingbird can eat 2,000 insects a day! A little effort to provide the hummingbirds with the environment they need can bring hours of entertainment. Enjoy!
