EIGHT The Rainforest World Music Festival is a unique festival that brings together on the same stage renowned world musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians from the interiors of the mythical island of Borneo. MAD VIBRATIONS WHEN 360 MET MAD SALLY Mad Sally, the awesome poprock band that played for our Year #2 Anniversary Party, has established themselves as one of the most entertaining bands in the Malaysian music scene, and we at 360celsius vouch against all subjectivity that aim to deny it. Naturally, we dragged them out with eyes pried open for an early morning shoot and a chat at a nearby mamak. How did Mad Sally come about?

It was to prevent fraud. Our original bass player wished to purchase quality goods from Petaling Street, and I instructed him to say: “I may look like a mat salleh, but don’t give me mat salleh prices.” So from our heartfelt desire to uphold trustworthy business practice in KL, came our band name. “Mad Sally” – a name you can trust, and who will give you good price.

Your outfits are very striking. Explain yourselves!

Being a band is not just about playing your instruments well – our audiences get good value for money in that we stimulate all their senses at once – aurally of course, and visually with what we wear and how we move our clothes with our bodily movements. Audiences have even claimed to be able to taste our music, often saying that it was a ‘sweet’ performance. I hope we don’t add to Malaysia’s diabetes epidemic.

Do you have a particular genre or era that you’re partial to? We have to constantly exercise our musical muscles with different exercises; otherwise we will end up becoming musical wimps. And no

one finds a wimp sexy. Variety is the spice of life, but generally we do love our musical food to include a full dish of disco, a good portion of pop, infused with lots of rock flavoring.

Read that the band will be releasing their debut recording soon. What kind of style or genre will it have? Yes we will. The genre will be Disrop. The mutated monster offspring of Disco, Pop & Rock.

Can you describe the creative process?

We are like those mad scientists who invent killer viruses. So we think about how we can get our listeners feeling hot and sweaty from being infected by our music. Often our inspiration comes after learning a batch of songs written by other people that have managed to infect millions with their music. Then often a new melody arises, like a mutation of an old tune which may then spawn some word sounds which eventually become legible lyrics. We then bring these dangerous substances to the band so that we can construct them into a fully arranged song. This is then recorded in the studio to create the track, which is like safely sealing the virus in a syringe ready to be injected into people’s hearts!

Do you believe that to compose ‘authentic feeling’ songs one must first undergo the experience of what one is singing about?

Sure it helps to go through the experience. Didn’t The Beatles live with their friend in a Yellow Submarine for a while? That’s why that song sounds so authentic. It sounds like certain song styles are very dangerous to write, like gangsta-rap. But then again, imagination land can be a very real place. Don’t people wake up dreaming of being in a fire then have burns on their skin in the morning? I hope that The Trammps didn’t injure any one or burn down any discos when they wrote “Burn, Baby, Burn, Disco inferno…”

Has a crowd of raging women thrown their panties at you during a show?

What are your thoughts on censorship?

The stage is the sovereign land of Mad Sally, so anyone who gets on stage becomes the rightful property of Mad Sally. We usually get a good price on eBay for Mad Sally fans. They seem to be better quality than the average band fan.

People offend themselves. Censoring music is perhaps the worst thing that any government can do. All it does is ruin the market and stifle new ideas. For what? I have a feeling that people’s moral fibre can’t be destroyed by listening to a song, and if it was damaged that easily, then perhaps the problem doesn’t lie with the song.

What is the strangest, bizarre or just stand out things to have happened during a show?

A random guy once got up to play a rock song with us and his guitar playing was great, until he got to the solo. This became so painful to listeners in the audience that I think half of them died and many suffered severe psychological trauma that they might never listen to music again without reliving the experience. Fortunately Mad Sally is well trained in the secret art of ending a song deftly without anyone realizing it. We saved many lives that night.

Yes many times. It is great, but we prefer if the undergarments are new, and that they throw the original packaging with it. This way we can return them to the store and get a refund, or perhaps a replacement in a colour that we prefer.

what would you do If a fan came up on stage trying to hug and sing along with the band?

after all is said and done and you’ve tasted the heights of success. What do you think will be the final story of the band?

Immortality as science advances to such a degree death is banished and everyone lives happily ever after. Though what most people don’t realize is that the immortality drug’s main ingredient is the congealed sweat of Mad Sally members collected from performances over their lifetime. It’s a huge government conspiracy as the sweat is running out, and people will soon become mortal again, unless a new band that is as awesome as Mad Sally comes to save humanity. Yuna is a name that needs no introduction; in fact if you’re a Malaysian, chances are you’ve enjoyed bopping your head to a tune of hers a couple of times on the radio and have been humming it ever since. And that is not at all startling because it is pretty hard not to like her. Armed with trademark velvety vocals and the sweet sound of her acoustic guitar, she’s gone on to win countless hearts (and ears) over the years and eventually bagged herself a record deal with the US-based Fader label. Her self-titled debut US release is such a gem of an album you would absolutely be impressed with; not only because it’s such a well-produced album (one of the big names who co-produced the album is none other than Pharell Williams), but mostly because you’d be proud to know that our home girl has made it this far. We are truly humbled and can’t wait to see what else she’s got in store.

Realize artistReza Salleh Another prominent name from the local singersongwriter scene with music worth checking out would be none other than Reza Salleh, whose album Realize has earned him five AIM nominations, which is the local equivalent of the Grammy Awards. Having been performing for over a decade, expect no less than greatness from this album as Reza aims to take you away from your chaotic everyday life with his ever-soothing vocals, effortlessly layered in wonderfully-arranged tunes consisting of multiple instruments, further proving he’s a man with a sound that’s here to stay.

Inspired by a Sufjan Stevens track from Greetings From Michigan, Undun is a concept album that tells a story about a downfall of a young man, Redford Stevens, told backwards from the point of his death - impressed yet? The story offers listeners opportunities for reflections in life from the perception of someone on the journey “from a man to a memory”, accompanied by a soundtrack made of flowing, echoey R&B grooves so sombre that leaves you with the bittersweet taste of life: “you either done doin’ crime, or you done in”. Yesterday is a Distant Dream artistOJ Law If dreamy music is what you’re into then look no further as Yesterday is a Distant Dream is bound to set you off on a breezy, soul-searching trip of your own. Trust OJ to make treasurable music with the ability to make your heart ache a certain way only he knows how, as you go along tapping your fingers and singing away his equally heartfelt lyrics. The album can get quite addictive if you ask me, despite having to suffer slightly with its production quality which doesn’t justify the brilliance of the songs.

From the outside one would be forgiven in thinking it’s just like any other double terrace house lining the street. Look closer though and you’ll see the name ‘Core Design Gallery’ proudly emblazoned on the front of the house. Upon entering the premises, it’s a whole different point of view. The inspirational brainchild of husband and wife team Scarlette Lee and Chun Hooi Tan, Core Design Galleries (CDG) was established in 2009 as a new innovation in the evergrowing and vibrant art scene of Malaysia. A fusion of art gallery, design studio and live in home, CDG is a living concept that juxtaposes contemporary art, design and architecture not as separate elements, but as interrelated aspects of a whole. For Scarlett and Chun art and design is not just about water color paintings hanging on plain gallery walls. Nor is it about expensive works stowed away in mansions only for private collectors and viewings. No, art is more than just paint on canvas or dusty collections. Their vision is about contemporary artistic works interacting with people and spaces. It is about lived in, living art. A piece of art looks different hanging in a gallery wall. How would it look in someone’s home? How would it interact with the lighting and spatial dimension of a residence? Similarly they want to raise public appreciation and awareness of the contemporary art form and make it accessible for everyone.

“If you look at the new generation they are not interested in paddy fields and all those things. They are looking, seeing things like concrete jungles from a different perspective in their photography. They’re seeing installation works in a totally different light,” explains Scarlett. This philosophy is encapsulated in the physical layout of the Gallery itself. The lower floor has been completely opened up. The living room ceiling was dismantled and hacked away, revealing the steel reinforcement bars or BRC wire mesh underneath, which was then left bared and incorporated into the design of the gallery by hanging lamps and metal filigree to enhance its look. The sense of borderless space is enhanced with minimalist decor. The old fashioned parquet staircase was replaced with a clean steel version without hand rails. The lack of rails takes a while to get used to but with time it barely registers a second thought. The support and assistance structures were left untouched. No finishing was applied. Instead the original cement render was left bare and naked with no touch ups. This is in line with their view that you don’t need to spend lavishly

on Italian marble or granite to make the setting stylish. On the contrary, if the space can be made appealing even cement render adds to its overall look and design. It’s all about minimalism and getting back to basics in terms of design. Back to the core. That’s the genesis of the name Core Design Gallery. “Again it is inexpensive and it’s a matter of how to use inexpensive things in the right way. We didn’t spend a lot in renovating. The major cost is in hacking off a lot of walls. So what you are doing is a stripping off as to back to the originality of the house.” said Chun. Core Design gallery is all about functionality, affordability and being contemporary. And that is the key word, contemporary. For contemporary art in Malaysia has been a driving passion for Scarlett. A pharmacist by training her first love had always been the arts and along with her design architect husband Chun, they set out to realize their dream. It is a passion that has seen her travel the length and breadth of the country in search of up and coming artists. “You never imagine what kind of works they can do under some atap

roof and come up with some amazing things,” said Scarlett. She goes on to add. “That is the most exciting part of the journey. To discover all these artists in our own backyard.” For these artists to be discovered and groomed by CDG has its tangible benefits. The CDG vision for the relationship between the gallery and the artist is all about promotion, collaboration and development. “We will sit down with him (the artist) and actually go through the process of development together on a weekly basis,” said Scarlette. The dream though, remains setting up a Workshop for artists, architects and designers to exchange and discuss ideas. Much like Core Design Gallery itself, it’s all about different aspects combined as a whole to bring forth art.

The Hunger Games Author Suzanne Collins Publisher Scholastic, Inc The movie is finally out. One could be forgiven for thinking this might be the next ‘Twilight’. Or ‘Twilightslayer’ if one is so inclined. There is a ‘love triangle’ of sorts going on, but that’s about the only similarity. As far as the book is concerned, there was a minor controversy in that some readers accused Suzanne Collins of being far too closely ‘inspired’ by Battle Royale, a Japanese novel that was turned into a cult film. What makes this story so amazing is the meticulous worldbuilding and attention to detail. Her description of hunger, famine and the desperation of it would hold true in the real world. And in Katniss, Suzanne has created a deep and fascinating character that readers will want to follow till the end.

TAKING IT BELOW THE BELT WITH ROBOTICS Most men would be wary about letting a robot have a go at their family jewels or anywhere near them, and we do can see how it can appear quite intimidating. But when cancer hits you square in the prostate, Laparoscopic Robotic Surgery is becoming quite an attractive option amongst patients these days compared to the traditional knife. We speak to Dato’ Dr. Sahabudin, a veteran urologist who has performed dozens of Laparoscopic Robotic Surgeries, for a clearer picture of the situation down south. Please explain your field of expertise. What is an Urologist? What is urology? My expertise on the whole is as a consultant urologist. I do everything in urology. Urology is to do with the genital urinary systems which involve the prostate, the urethra, and the kidneys and of course the genital organs the testes and the penis as well.

Could you give us your medical and professional background?

I’ve been in urology since 1987 when I was the Head of the Urology Centre that is the National Institute of Urology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. I did the first open radical prostatectomy in this country back in 1997. Since then I’ve done a score more enough to know the complications that patients go through. This led to my study of non-surgical minimally invasive procedures such as robotic surgery and Laparoscopic prostatectomy. In 2001 robotics was introduced into radical prostatectomy and I was involved. Then in 2003 we managed to purchase a robot for Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Since then I have been working in robotic surgery till my retirement in 2007.

Petronas bought a robot of their own and I was invited to participate in setting up this Centre of Excellence. Not only that but I’m still doing my work in the field of robotic surgery to provide minimal post-op side effects and maximum patient satisfaction.

As you grow older into the 40s and 50s, that’s when the non-communicable diseases strike. That’s when all the cancers such as the prostate, the bladder start appearing. For bladder cancer smoking is something you should avoid completely.

What are the more common urological disorders among Malaysians?

Many Malaysians are unaware of the prostate and more unfortunately the risk of prostate cancer. What are the function and potential disorders of the prostate?

Urology involves major diseases like kidney stone diseases which is very common in this country. The other major urological issues are due to aging male problems like prostate, prostate cancers, bladder cancers, and genital cancers like testicular cancers, penile cancers and so forth.

In this country for example, incidences of stone disease is very common. Up to 70% of urological problems admitted to hospitals involve stone disease. This has a lot to do with our lifestyle, especially our eating and drinking habits. For example we drink coffee and tea but fail to drink adequate amounts of water to reduce the so-called supersaturation that takes place in the urine.

The prostate is an organ that lies just below the bladder. It functions to provide the glucose, fructose and sucrose soup that makes up 10% to 30% of seminal fluid, enabling it to survive outside the body during sex. Without the prostate no procreation is possible. After puberty the prostate begins growing in size, and the question is “how large?” Up to 30% of males are lucky that the enlargement is not too drastic that it causes medical problems. However, for 60% of males the prostate enlargement will cause problems.

I’ve been in urology since 1987 when I was the Head of the Urology Centre that is the National Institute of Urology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

How does one go about detecting and preventing prostate cancer?

The actual causes of prostate cancer are unknown for now. We do find that if you have a family history of say one or two members of the family developing it there is a 50% chance of you also developing the cancer. Detecting it early while it is still in the prostate can be done only by Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) through a blood test that rates between 0-4 normal standard levels for the Asian population. If it’s anything above 4 then a biopsy is recommended to confirm if it’s cancer. If it’s confirmed, then several options are available to the individual including surgery. This comes in two forms which is open conventional surgery which has had an excellent 20 year track record. Or one can opt for robotic surgery which has gone up by 82% in the U.S.

ARE urological disorders and illnesses a major healthcare issue in this country?

It is and along with stone disease, renal failure is also a common problem in this country. So much publicity and effort is spent on organ transplants and donations but nobody talks about preventing renal failure. And despite renal failure due to stone disease being a preventable illness in this country the rate is quite high. Personally I think this is a major issue which should be addressed in terms of raising awareness on a national level. That prevention is all about minor lifestyle changes. Let’s make it into a national health issue.

Other than medical treatments and open surgery, there is also Laparoscopic Robotic Surgery. Could you give an explanation of what laparoscopy is and what are the benefits?

Open surgery is primitive way of treating some of these dreadful diseases. Nobody wants to be cut. The knife is a primitive instrument. Today you have technology in the form of lasers, ultra sound, radioactive devices and so forth which perform more precise surgery. Using a knife to cut muscle is destructive because muscle can never heal back perfectly. It heals by fibrosis that means it’s never normal again. And cutting the muscle always involves pain but minimally invasive procedures avoids cutting of the muscle or obvious permanent scarring.

Secondly whenever you cut, it exposes the internal organs to the atmosphere, so the bowels will be diluted. When this occurs the patient is unable to eat or drink for days and will lose their appetite. It’s important for people in hospital to be able to eat and drink and live normally. Thirdly cutting involves a lot of pain. In contrast, Laparoscopic robotic surgery involves using a port to pierce through the skin and between the muscles; this is similar to using a needle to draw blood. Pain is only felt when the port is there, but is minimal once the port is taken out. There is also very little post-op pain and minimal exposure to the atmosphere and to infection.

Infection? What are the chances?

When you get an infected wound it takes a long time to heal. Also whenever you are admitted to a hospital there is always the risk of nosocomial infection (hospital acquired infection).

How then does Laparoscopic robotic surgery reduce the risk of such complications?

The longer you stay in hospital the higher chance of contracting the infection. With open surgery wear stay and recovery may take a week or two. With robotic surgery or minimally invasive procedures, patients are ready to go home the next day. Minimizing your stay reduces the risk of nosocomial infection. Staying too long bedridden in hospital invites the potential risk of getting deep vein thrombosis. Also, a longer stay means higher costs in terms of medical and nursing costs. With minimally invasive surgery there’s also hardly any blood loss which is important. No-one wants to risk a blood transfusion because there are no 100% safe blood reserves anywhere. We actually get the consent of the patient, pre-informing

them that blood transfusions are never guaranteed to be 100% safe. It’s best then to minimize chances of it being used. Statistics reveal that compared to open surgery where nosocomial rates are up to 20%. But with robotic surgery it’s only 0.8% with hardly any transfusion necessary. Patients stay for 24-48 hours before going home. Here at PCMC, with Laproscopy, they’re discharged after three days because most of these patients come from outstation whereas in US and Europe, they have hotels adjacent to the hospital so they get discharged the same evening or early morning and check in to the hotel for two to three days before going home. We don’t have that facility, but we have a hotel facility here so we keep them an extra day to make sure that they’re fit enough to travel home.

These days, as medical shows have become a staple in our households’ television and cable viewing schedule, the much revered fictional TV doctors have turned into an everyman, possessing the ability to heal while also making us laugh and cry about the realities of illness, trauma and death. As for the real doctors, well, they’ve emerged as medical reporters, talkshow hosts and even infomercial participants. Today’s medical shows have become a mix of soap opera, drama, and it has made us imagine the medical career as something that is so surreal. Furthermore, I’m quite sure that most of us want to be taken care of by some of these popular TV caregivers who gave us the warm fuzziness regardless of what kind of series they were part of. The Doctor Is In…Your TV While they may be actors in real life, these fine folks were the best at mending their patients on the small screen as television health care professionals. As the amiable and bemused center of his household, Cliff Huxtable was always ready to deliver advice when he wasn’t at the hospital delivering babies. • Dr. Henry Kissinger We hear about “Doctor Kissinger” a lot, and we know that he is considered one of the great statesmen of modern times. He has been well-known in foreign affairs — and for good reason. His Ph.D. is in international relations. Not only was Dr. Kissinger Secretary of State under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, but he has consulted with numerous U.S. presidents since then, and is not shy about expressing his opinions on issues of international note. He was instrumental in opening relations with China, and in other accomplishments, including receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. • Dr. Dre Andre Romelle Young probably doesn’t ring any bells for you. However, you probably have heard of Dr. Dre. No, he isn’t a “real” doctor. But he is known for his musical accomplishments. He is credited with being a major influence in the rap world, bringing West Coast G-funk rap into popularity. He is found in close association with Eminem (he mentored the young rap star), 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg. Dr. Dre is a record executive and even has some acting credits under his belt. He is one of the most recognized “doctors” out there. • Dr. J One of the most famous basketball players of all time, Julius Erving was known as Dr. J. Erving is known as one of the players that ushered what we known as modern basketball. He was known for his spectacular dunks, and the “slam dunk” is widely credited for being popularized by Dr. J. His style of play was flashy and exciting. He won three championships, and was awarded four MVP awards. He holds the distinction of being #5 on the list of high scoring basketball players. He is a Hall of Fame member, and a member of the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time team. • Dr. Bill Cosby On TV, the fictional Dr. Cosby was a doctor. But Bill Cosby, the standup comedian turned actor, didn’t have that distinction in real life. However, all of that changed when he went to the University of Massachusetts and got a Ph.D. in education. Now, Dr. Bill Cosby truly is a doctor — even if he doesn’t practice medicine.

The Non-Existent, Non-Medical Doctors There are plenty of fictional doctors who don’t practice medicine — even in fantasy. • Dr. Seuss Millions of children read books by Dr. Seuss in classrooms all over the country — and around the world. ‘The Cat in the Hat’ is probably the most famous Dr. Seuss book, but there are many, many more, including the holiday favorite, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’. Dr. Seuss, though, is the pen name of Theodor Geisel. He intended to become a “doctor”, earning a Ph.D. from Oxford, but he never finished. Giesel was also a cartoonist, and was known for his humor. • Dr. No The first James Bond film, Dr. No, featured a mad scientist as the title character. Dr. No works for SPECTRE, an organization bent on extortion and terrorism. He isn’t the boss, though. James Bond battles him. He has a metallic hand, since he lost his real hand to radiation. Dr. No dies after being hit by radioactive materials. Dr. No is played by Joseph Wiseman. There is no doubt that Dr. No remains a famous “doctor”, and the launching of Bond Villains in the Bond movie franchise.

• Dr. Octopus One of the most dangerous super villains in the world of comic books, Dr. Octopus threatens Spider Man regularly. Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius is a mad scientist with metallic arms that allow him to manipulate several objects at once. The metallic arms became fused to his body during a radiation leak (radiation can do just about anything). He is also known as “Doc Ock”, and has appeared over the years in Spider Man comics. Perhaps the most disturbing thing about Doc Ock is his continuing friendship with Peter Parker’s Aunt May.

• Dr. Claw One of the most well-known “doctors” in fiction is Dr. Claw, the nemesis of TV’s Inspector Gadget. Dr. Claw runs the criminal organization, known as M.A.D. Dr. Claw owns a cat, and pampers this cat. Dr. Claw is known for his convoluted plans, and plots to kill Inspector Gadget as he steals something that is usually large. One of the things about Dr. Claw is that his face is not seen on the cartoon show; only his hand, stroking a cat. This spoofs Ernst Stavro Blofeld, a bond villain. • Dr. Evil Very few people are not familiar with Dr. Evil, the villain in the Austin Powers movies created by Mike Meyers. Mike Meyers famously plays both Dr. Evil and Austin Powers, as well as other characters. Dr. Evil, like Dr. Claw, is a spoof on the James Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld — although we see quite a lot of Evil’s face. He aims at world domination, helped by his dwarf clone Mini-Me and his cat, Mr. Bigglesworth. Unfortunately for him, Dr. Evil’s complex plans often end in disaster for himself. • Dr. Who Dr. Who is the time-traveling alien known as the “Doctor”. He is a kick-butt time lord, fighting evil whenever it occurs. It is considered the longest running science fiction television series, and considered the most successful. Dr. Who is played by different characters, and is in his 11th incarnation. It’s easy when you can regenerate. Dr. Who has been fighting villains since 1963, even though there was a hiatus between 1989 and 2005, when the series rebooted.

OF BLOOD, BRAINS, & BILLS THE CONDITION OF THE MALAYSIAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM Malaysia has some of the finest doctors and healthcare facilities, and some of the worst. But what makes a doctor or hospital good or bad? Can local government healthcare facilities compete with those of the private sector, or even those abroad? To find out more, we spoke to Allan Fernandez, a medical administrator, with experience in Malaysia and Singapore, who aims to improve the quality and delivery of healthcare for medical professionals and patients. FRom your experience, What does it take to set up a good hospital?

From the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Board of Directors down to its cleaners, each one must share a common passion and commitment to delivering not just quality medical care, but to provide patients a comfortable and conducive environment to aid in their recovery. I am a firm believer that doctors and nurses should not be overly burdened with non-clinical or administrative tasks; each minute spent filling up forms is a minute less spent on a patient. Similarly, medical administrators should not be over zealous in their roles; they must understand that they serve the doctors, not the other way around. The quality of medical care should never be compromised for the sake of profit. What I just described is the perfect hospital, which in truth rarely exists. To find that ideal equilibrium between the business end of hospital management, legal and statutory compliance, the provision of medical services and the role it plays in the community is the challenge every hospital faces.

In your opinion, what has been done right with the local healthcare system so far? What does it lack?

This is a highly subjective and sensitive issue. To some, the system is not broken; it just needs to be fine-tuned. Others, for reasons either financial or altruistic, are calling for a complete overhaul of the healthcare delivery system in Malaysia. Personally, I feel there is much for Malaysians to be proud of with the local healthcare industry.

We have one of the cheapest and most convenient healthcare delivery systems in the world. In most places in Malaysia, you can visit a GP, receive consultation, investigations and/or medicines for RM30 - RM60. Visit a government clinic, and this service is virtually free. Contrast this with the insurance-based healthcare models in the developed countries: you first visit your local GP, then travel to a diagnostic centre for your investigations, then back to the doctor for either a referral or a prescription, then travel again to a specialist for further consultation or to a pharmacy to collect your medicines. While your insurance (which you pay for) covers the cost of your treatment, the amount of time and money spent on traveling and fuel will probably be more than what you would otherwise pay in our current fee-for-service/ out-of-pocket model. We are also fortunate to have many competent doctors and nurses in this country, and most hospitals are relatively well-equipped with advanced treatment and diagnostic facilities. There is, however, a general perception, both by the rakyat and within the medical community, that we are not as good as our neighbours, that the best Malaysian doctors are foreign graduates who prefer to work overseas because of better pay or prospects, that government hospitals are inferior. Recent data and surveys suggest that the cost of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare in both the private and public hospitals is rising exponentially, and that the quality of healthcare provided has not improved in

tandem with the increase in fees. It is easy to dismiss this as Malaysians wanting everything to be good and cheap. However, there are a multitude of contributory factors: talent drain, lack of specialists, high costs of pharmaceuticals, equipment and facilities, inefficient purchase and cost controls, aging population, old or poorly-designed hospitals that simply cannot cope with the current patient load, the need to balance equitable healthcare with profit targets, lack of trained and efficient EMS (emergency medical services). These problems, among many more, are endemic to the industry worldwide, it is not specific or unique to Malaysia.

Allan Fernandez comes from a family of doctors. His late father Dr Tibbs Fernandez was the former President of the MMA. He returned from Melbourne to take over a medical group practice in Johor upon his demise. Since then, he has completely revamped the management and operational policies at the Practice, strengthened the goodwill with doctors, patients, corporate clients and the community, expanded the group from 4 clinics to 8, established a pharmacy division and provide consultancy services to several private specialists and medical centres in Malaysia and Singapore.

Where do we stand in the global scene? Like any business, healthcare needs a strong brand. Look no further than our local hospitals, why are some hospitals perceived as better than another? Could it not be that the doctor most qualified and competent to treat your particular condition works in a less “glamourous” hospital? Why do some Malaysians seek medical treatment in Singapore, Thailand, India, Australia and further abroad? Have we maximised our potential as a destination for medical tourism?

Positioned globally, we must concede that our medical facilities have not attained the prestige and reputation of places like John Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, the Royal Cancer Hospital, the London Clinic or the Price of Wales Hospital. Many of these hospitals are established teaching and research institutes, making pioneering advances in medical sciences, treatment and modalities. From a regional perspective, we lack a clear identity or position with regard to medical tourism and the quality of care we provide. Singapore has done well to build and maintain its reputation as the premier provider of medical services. Its modern and efficient hospitals are known to have the most advanced treatment and diagnostic facilities, and can boast of having some of the most highly trained and experienced doctors in

the region (many of whom are originally from Malaysia). Thailand, with its equally competent foreign-trained medical professionals, has carved a niche as providing a standard of hospitality and service currently unmatched by even their Singapore counterparts. While this reputation is limited to a few “boutique” hospitals such as Bumrungrad and BMC, these two hospitals collectively treat over 600,000 foreign patients a year. Are Malaysian doctors less competent than those in Thailand and Singapore? I think not. However, we were slow to respond to the potential of medical tourism and are now forced to play catch up. To improve our goodwill, brand and standing in the global and regional scene, healthcare providers in Malaysia may wish to consider focusing on certain subspecialties, partnering with top international hospitals to set up research and training centres in Malaysia with specific emphasis on cardiology, oncology and geriatric care. Given demographic trends, these would be the key growth areas for the local healthcare industry.

Like the patients it treats, most people in the industry understand that there is no “magic pill” that will cure all its problems. While certain steps need to and have been taken to provide “symptomatic relief” - such as Klinik 1Malaysia, free treatment for senior citizens, higher pay for government doctors, etc- a more holistic approach needs to be adopted.

The proposed introduction of a national healthcare financing scheme (1C1M) sounds like the perfect solution to the problems and shortcomings in the industry. While the aim of minimising out-ofpocket medical expenses and providing equitable healthcare cover for all citizens is a sound and just notion, until we address and improve the existing inefficiencies in the public and private health sector, such a scheme may invariably fail to achieve those objectives. It is worth noting that no country has successfully implemented an insurance-based healthcare financing scheme that delivered on its intended promise. Both the NHS in the UK and Medicare in the US achieved a modicum of early success, but as the flaws were not adequately addressed before its implementation, both systems saw costs spiral and doctors opting out of the scheme, charging fees that only those with means or with high private insurance cover could afford.

One area that needs to be urgently addressed is Emergency Medical Services. There is a dire need for trained and competent EMS professionals, with fully equipped ambulances and rescue helicopters. The communications and relationship between the EMS services, police and fire department and the hospitals must be improved. I feel that EMS should be run independent of the hospitals, such that the patient is attended to immediately and sent to the nearest hospital for treatment. It is alarming that patients often wait hours for ambulances to arrive, and are forced to endure long travel times to reach the hospital. We can and must do better. Another worrying trend is the increasing number of medical negligence cases being brought to the courts; this is a forewarning of a litigious society and a future where doctors will invariably practice defensive medicine. While mistakes are rare, effective training and safeguards will greatly reduce the risk of medical negligence and help instill confidence in the patients that their lives are in good hands. Times have changed; doctors today (and in future) do not enjoy the unfettered respect and autonomy of their predecessors. It is a difficult time for many doctors, as the changes are coming hard and fast: increased patient expectations, the need to stay relevant with current medical technologies and advances, demands by hospital administrators, new laws and regulations, compliance issues and more. On a final point, I reiterate my first: Healthcare may be a business, but patient care - not profit should be its primary objective.

A day in the life of the MERCY Malaysia

If things can get messy in the sterile, controlled environment of an operating theatre, imagine taking the action out onto a disaster stricken site. It may be too much to handle for most, but for the great men and women of MERCY Malaysia, this is just another day at work. Pein Lee, a photojournalist whose work has been picked up by various local and international publications, followed the elite team of volunteers on one of their trips to provide vital aid and relief to earthquake victims. In October 2009, the west Sumatra district of Padang Pariaman was struck by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake. 24 hours after the incident, MERCY Malaysia were on the ground conducting surveys into what possible aid and assistance could be provided. I was a volunteer and part of the small advance party that set the path for an entire team that comprised almost 30 volunteers, including doctors, surgeons, nurses and logisticians. MERCY Malaysia is a Malaysian based NGO whose primary mission is to provide emergency medical care in areas of natural disaster and human conflict. They have operated in areas such as Giza, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Philippines and in this case, Indonesia. MERCY was also in the frontline after the tsunami of 2004, in Aceh, Indonesia. Padang Pariaman saw MERCY leap into action in the same

country, facing similar issues albeit on a much smaller scale, although no less pressing in urgency. During the Padang Pariaman mission, MERCY cooperated with various agencies including the United Nations, MĂŠdecins Sans FrontiĂ¨res as well as the Singapore Army in providing emergency care and relief missions. While MERCY was instrumental in coordinating the facilities at the Pariaman district hospital, it was the outreach and mobile clinic missions that provided a wide net of medical services including the distribution of hygiene kits and supplementary food aid to victims and beneficiaries in hard to reach areas. Common sense says that being healthy involves clean, wholesome living along with avoiding things harmful to our well-being. These four recognized medical treatments suggest that sometimes, common sense can be a load of crock…literally.

Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT)

The pale wriggly maggot is a revolting sight and conjures images of decay and death, but maggots were used to clean wounds by the ancient Aborigines of Australia, and the Maya Kingdoms of the Americas. Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) involves live maggots feeding on open wounds and injuries. Proponents claim it is effective in removing dead tissue, disinfecting wounds as well as assist in healing. The first field test of MDT was in 1929 and it became a widespread treatment throughout the 1930s up to WWII where new drugs such as penicillin would render MDT nearly obsolete. In 1989, it was reintroduced by Dr. Ronald Sherman to deal with antibiotic resistant bacteria, and is now used in over 20 countries including Malaysia. Today, it is sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a means of “debriding non-healing necrotic skin and soft tissue wounds, including pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, neuropathic foot ulcers, and non-healing traumatic or post-surgical wounds.” There have been reports of MDT being used to treat burn injuries but currently there is no indication that this is a widely accepted medical practice.

MDT is effective in debriding dead and necrotic tissue. It is efficacy as a disinfectant, however, is debatable although some studies show that the digestive secretions have strong antibacterial properties that can inhibit and destroy a wide range of pathogenic bacteria including those resistant to antibiotics. The maggots are kept on the wound via a mesh cage or pouch with the bottom cut off, in direct contact with the injury. The maggots excrete digestive enzymes that debride (clean off) necrotic tissue by dissolving it. The digestive juices liquefy the necrotic tissue into a soupy broth that the maggot absorbs. In theory what is left behind is clean healthy tissue. Although it does work in debriding away the necrotic flesh of the patient, some studies indicated its effectiveness is similar to modern non-MDT methods. The only difference being that patient’s report greater pain during MDT. Another concern is that leaving the maggots too long or even using too many maggots could endanger healthy tissues as well as the dead and damaged ones.

Hirudotherapy (Leech therapy)

Most people would normally refuse any sort of blood-sucking on themselves. Even Twilight fans would rather have their lifeblood drained by the pallid Edward Cullen and happily die in his arms in the process. It is doubtful though that Twi-Hards would squirm in ecstasy at the thought of having a slimy, ugly leech or two doing the same. Hirudotherapy is the use of leeches in aiding medical and surgical procedures. The word ‘Hirudotherapy’ comes from the Latin name of the animal which is ‘Hirudo medicinalis’. The process is simple and easy. The leeches are introduced to the area that requires treatment. Once they are attached they begin feeding and engorge. Feeding may take up to an hour at which time they will release. Leech saliva contains a potent anti-coagulant which prevents clotting and allows it to feed uninterrupted. This is useful especially in limb, organ re-attachment, transplant and reconstructive surgery. During re-attachment stagnant (venous) blood pools, preventing new fresh blood from flowing in with oxygen and nutrients to feed the newly attached flesh. The leech not only feeds on this venous blood but its anti-coagulant property causes the venous blood to flow out hours after the leech has stopped feeding. The removal of venous blood stimulates fresh blood flow into the arteries which promotes better growth in transplanted limbs and organs.

Leech therapy has a long history stretching back to ancient Egypt and India, through to Greece and the Islamic Caliphate right down to the 19th Century where usage began to wane. Back then medical theory posited that people fell ill due to having the ‘wrong’ sort of blood or an imbalance of bodily fluids and the leech was perfectly suited to correct and heal the ailment by removing the excess or ‘bad blood’. In modern times leeches are used extensively in surgery. Other than a few cases of prolonged bleeding and an allergic reaction or two there is little risk involved. Have pasty faced Edward Cullen suck me off or an ugly little leech? The leech wins every time.

Helminthic therapy (worm therapy)

Each of us is an individual cosmos – a living breathing universe with its own inhabitants. Microbes, viruses and even worms. Parasitic worms infest our innards and sometimes need to be surgically removed. A grotesque birth occurs as the intestines are opened and hundreds of slithering worms burst out. Surprisingly other than to gross people, these worms do have their benefits. Helminthic Therapy is referred to as Worm Therapy since it utilizes parasitic worms to help patients with auto immune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Crohn’s Disease among others. Parasitic worms are transplanted into the patient’s body. Not just

any worm will do. They must be harmless to humans, don’t multiply or spread to other people and a limited lifespan are preferred. The hookworm and the whipworm are best. If the patient wishes to discontinue the treatment all they have to do is use worm medicines.

In 2009 the United States Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) reclassified the worms being sold for worm therapy as a ‘drug’. It requires FDA approval before sold legally in the United States. Today patients have to import the worms using special permits or buy outside the US.

Hygiene Theory states that when the human immune system is not exposed to parasites and bacteria, it weakens and increases the chances of the person developing auto immune diseases. Therefore parasitic worms are introduced to modulate the human immune system so it can recognize and deal with parasites and bacteria and strengthen itself. In other words ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’

Easy to remove and virtually undetectable. As for the diarrhea, it’s a risk we all take every time we patronize a dodgy ‘warung ‘anyway.

The whip worm is administered by consuming a tasteless solution containing the worms in the form of ova (invisible to the naked eye). That’s right. The person drinks a soup of worm eggs/hatchlings. These hatch and grow in the intestines. The hook worm is administered differently. They enter via bandages placed on the skin. From there they make their way inward towards the intestines. Many studies suggest that patients show an improvement in their condition. Although actual numbers are unavailable, researchers and the kin of patients have reported distinct benefits for those undergoing the treatment. Large scale clinical trials are being planned in the United States and the United Kingdom by private researchers. General side effects if any include diarrhea and fatigue. One UK researcher felt the worms nibbling on his intestines. But he had infected himself with about 50 worms. The recommended amount is between 10-25 worms

Fecal Bacteriotherapy

The second method would is even worse, for it involves pumping the poop through a tube (nasoduodenal tube) inserted into the nose straight into the gut. The first recorded modern instance occurred in 1958. There is almost no literature of it having happened in the past or considered as a treatment. Our ancestors probably couldn’t imagine pushing it back in, except perhaps as an exotic torture.

This is all about poop, logs, stools and scat. For many it’s the worst of the worst. It’s utterly disgusting and only scatophiliacs would love. Despite the near universal repugnance, human fecal matter has been found to play a stomach churning role in certain ‘specialized’ therapy.

Recently trials and field research has shown that for CDI it is an incredibly effective treatment, with ratings of 85% to 92% well above the performance of any clinical drugs in use. Some doctors advocate that fecal transplant be the first recourse in CDI treatment instead of the last resort.

Fecal Bacteriotherapy or fecal transplant is a procedure that enables human fecal matter from one person to be transplanted into another. The theory is that beneficial bacteria from a healthy human and therefore healthy fecal matter will displace harmful bacteria in the guts of the patient.

The main risk is that the fecal donor hasn’t been properly screened and their sample contains harmful bacteria or viruses which may cause worse harm. Other than that there seems very little danger reported.

It is used to treat patients with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) an infection that is increasingly resistant to antibiotics; symptoms include diarrhea and in some cases can lead to life-threatening ailments like toxic megacolon. There are two ways of reintroducing healthy colonic bacteria into another person’s guts. The first is through a ‘fecal enema’. Fecal matter from another person (usually a relative) is donated through defecation. It is then liquefied and fed through an enema tube directly into the bowels of the patient.

CRACKING DOWN WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DAMAGED TEETH

Many people who are not aware of the consequences of repairing broken or chipped teeth, or those who are fearful of what restored teeth look like, choose simply to let their damaged teeth simply remain unrepaired. A damaged tooth can be saved and repaired to look and feel like the real thing – perhaps even better! There are several treatment options available. When a tooth gets chipped or fractured, the first consideration must be to ascertain whether the pulp, the vital living portion of the tooth, has been damaged. If one feels sensitivity, pain or discomfort, it may be due to the pulp being exposed. Ultimately, the condition of the pulp and the extent and amount of remaining tooth structure will determine the choice of treatment. Upon discovering your tooth being fractured or chipped it is recommended that you consult your dentist immediately to avoid further damage to the tooth structure which can lead to exaggerated tooth damage and complications in treatment.

Different types of tooth fractures include the following: Minor Fractures Minor fractures, such as minor chips on the biting edges of teeth are often simple to repair. If the chipped tooth is of sufficient length, it may be cosmetically contoured (further elaborated below). In terms of treatment, it is always best to preserve the shape and health of the damaged tooth to avoid further damage. More Serious Fractures Serious fractures, often caused by an accident or the event of mishap are best treated in a timely manner. Depending on the extent of the damage, your dentist may choose to bond some teeth and crown others, especially when time is needed to determine if the nerves in the teeth can be saved.

Bonding involves the application of composite resin to the existing tooth as a conservative method of covering fractures. Crowning involves preparing, shaping and ultimately covering the repaired tooth. Porcelain Crown Fractures For those already with porcelain crowns, a fracture of your crowns may also occur. Keep an eye on your crowns to see if dark outlines appear at the gum line. Should dark outlines appear you may have a fracture of the crown or shrinkage of gum tissue. If detected early, some of the minor porcelain fractures can be treated by smoothing the chipped porcelain or bonding composite resin to the area. In more advanced fractures, the crown may have to be replaced. Vertical Root Fractures In these extreme cases, there may be no practical way to save the tooth, leaving extraction as the only answer. However, all possibilities should be considered prior to the extraction of any tooth. In the event of the need

for extraction, consider the possibility of an immediate implant replacement. Cosmetic Contouring As a Restoration Treatment Cosmetic contouring is an ideal treatment for small fractures and chips as minimal tooth reduction is involved and an anesthetic is normally not required. The rough edges are carefully smoothed out, composite resin is applied, the tooth is contoured and polished to look, feel and operate as it originally was. The cost and time involved is also at a minimum and one is left with healthy restored teeth. Making restorations last Dental restorations, like everything in life, do not last forever. Dental materials are subject to not only chipping and fracturing but everyday wear and tear. This can be exaggerated by grinding teeth, chewing ice and bones or brushing too aggressively. Even normal chewing eventually causes degradation and eventual break down.

Materials used to bond the restoration of teeth can also deteriorate when exposed to oral fluids over a long period of time. If you have dental restorations, you can minimize the risk of degradation by cutting down on food such as candies, chewing gums and other sticky refined carbohydrates. Also avoid clenching or grinding your teeth or use a custom fitted nightguard. Minimizing intake of stain causing food and drink such as coffee and tea and avoiding sweet drinks, sugar intake and smoking can also help preserve the restorations and the general well being of your teeth. Regular brushing (twice a day) and flossing of teeth (by pulling out the floss horizontally instead of vertically to preserve the restorations) to remove plaque is also essential. Regular visits to your dentist to assess and safeguard the general well being of your teeth and to check for signs of small chips and fractures is highly encouraged to avoid major tooth problems over time.

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid similar to those found in heartsmart fish, such as salmon. Alphalinolenic acid has a number of heart-healthy effects, independent of its cholesterol-lowering effects. It has been shown in previous studies to reduce the risk of sudden death from dangerous abnormal heart rhythms. Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of healthpromoting fats that are found in olive oil. They’re chock full of vitamin E, plant sterols, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. Almonds may help lower LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of diabetes.

COOKING WITH FRESH HERBS

Fresh herbs provide invigorating flavor along with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can help your system fight heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Rosemary, sage, oregano, and thyme contain antioxidants which are important in preventing many disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

LIKE A VIRGIN... However, don’t exceed one drink a day for women; one to two drinks for men – and consult your doctor first. Alcohol may cause problems for people taking aspirin and other medications. Too much alcohol can be a bad thing for the heart.

Make soy protein the main attraction more often at dinnertime by cooking with tofu instead of red meat. You gain all the heart-healthy minerals, fiber, and polyunsaturated fats of soy – and you avoid a load of artery-clogging saturated fat.

SOMETHING’S FISHY HERE

A top food for heart health, it’s rich in the omega-3s EPA and DHA. Omega-3s lower risk of rhythm disorders, which can lead to sudden cardiac death. Salmon also lowers blood triglycerides and reduces inflammation. The American Heart Association recommends two servings of salmon or other oily fish a week. Tuna is also a good source of heart-healthy omega-3s and it generally costs less than salmon. Albacore (white tuna) contains more omega3s than other tuna varieties. Reel in these other sources of omega-3s, too: mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines, and anchovies.

THE WONDER BEANS

According to some studies, the isoflavones found in edamame and other soy products can help to lower the risk of heart disease and also known to lower blood cholesterol levels. When edamame is used as a protein source in place of meat, the cardiovascular benefits are further enhanced. Edamame is also a good source of folate and vitamin K which are important for heart health.

Coffee and tea may help protect your heart by warding off type 2 diabetes. Studies show that people who drink 3-4 cups a day may cut their risk by 25% — and even decaffeinated coffee works. Oats in all forms can help your heart by lowering LDL, the bad cholesterol. A warm bowl of oatmeal fills you up for hours, fights snack attacks, and helps keep blood sugar levels stable over time – making it useful for people with diabetes, too.

This sweet, juicy fruit contains the cholesterol-fighting fiber pectin – as well as potassium, which helps control blood pressure. A small study shows that OJ may improve blood vessel function and modestly lower blood pressure through the antioxidant hesperidin.

While low-fat dairy is most often touted for bone health, these foods can help control high blood pressure, too. Milk is high in calcium and potassium and yogurt has twice as much of these important minerals. To really boost the calcium and minimize the fat, choose low-fat or non-fat varieties.

There I was at home, helping the kids with their homework when suddenly the doorbell rang. Thoughts of homework were all but forgotten as the kids started jumping in excitement as my older brother came through the door all packed and ready. He was joining us here in Rome for our return flight to Kuala Lumpur after a wonderful two week family odyssey through Italy. With the NOXEL Automation home application, I can simply adjust the air-conditioner to maintain the Turbo Cool status for three hours before our arrival home. I also did a check of the security cameras to make sure everything was secure, even though having the NOXEL AUTOMATION Smart Guard feature made it redundant since it would automatically warn me if there had been something wrong. THE VESPA STILL BUZZES AFTER 65-YEARS HOW THE LITTLE WASP CAME FROM A HUMBLE SCOOTER TO AN INTERNATIONAL POP ICON

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day. It probably took a bit less for the humble little Vespa to become the pride of Italy, and a cultural automotive icon the world over.

Italian Football, Sophia Loren, Dolce Vita, Milan fashion houses, paparazzi, pizza and pasta, tomatoes with everything, spaghetti westerns and schlock 60-70’s era splatter fest films, Italy has given so much in terms of pop culture, enriching the lives of people the world over. But few contributions stand out as the Vespa, the Little Wasp that Could. Originally it began as a new source of revenue for the Italian company Piaggio, which before the Second World War had established themselves as manufacturers of aircraft and aeronautical parts. During the war the plants were a target of Allied bombings and were also mined by the retreating German forces to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. Enrico Piaggio set about reassembling the plant and rebuilding the company. This time he decided to venture forth into the light mobility industry. It was a decision based on his observance of the conditions in Italy at the time. He realized that in the chaos left after the war, heavier and costlier vehicles like cars and trucks were becoming less common. Not to mention the condition of the roads were spotty at best and cratered by bomb blasts at worst, but people still needed to go about their daily lives. There was a need for cheap, easy to use, mass produced mobile vehicles. It was an untapped market. In other words, two wheelers such as motorcycles. Enrico along with collaborator Corradino D’Ascanio an aeronautical engineer and inventor, set about their task. The first attempt was a small motor scooter based on motorcycles for parachutists but both Enrico and Corradino did not like the look. Corradino revamped it by designing a vehicle with a stress-bearing body and a direct mesh. This covered up the drive chain and made it look cleaner. He placed the gear

lever on the handlebar making it easier to ride. Instead of the fork for the wheels, he designed an aircraft carriage style supporting arm, to enable ease in wheel changing. When Enrico saw the first prototype the MP 6 he cried, “Sembra una vespa! (It looks like Wasp!)” And so the Vespa was born. It was unveiled to the public in 1946 at the Milan Fair. Initially the Vespa was met with skepticism and curiosity by experts and the public at large. The first fifty sold relatively slowly but sales soon picked up as customers were offered installment payment plans. Piaggio would sell 2484 units in 1946. The number would later increase to 10,535 the following year and by 1948, 19,822 Vespas came off the production line and were snapped up by avid consumers. The increasing trend in sales continued and by 1950 the first German licensees began production which led to 60,000 new Vespas tearing the roads. Three years later the figure would rise to 171,200. By November 1953 the 500,000th unit left the production line and in June of 1956, the one millionth Vespa was produced.

While there are many variations of the origial Vespa, the iconic scooter is also a very personal and highly customizable fashion statement.

Performance wise the Vespa has had an illustrious career. At the 1951 ‘International 6 Days’ in Varese the Vespa won 9 gold medals and was the top-rated out of all the Italian motorcycles present. Also in the same year it took part in an expedition to the Congo. Pierre Delliere, a Sergeant in the French Air Force, travelled from Paris to Saigon in 51 days on a Vespa, through Afghanistan. Carlos Velez an Argentinian rode a Vespa from Buenos Aires to Santiago del Chile, traversing the mighty Andes in the process. Another enthusiast, Roberto Patrignani rode his Vespa from Milan, Italy all the way to Tokyo, Japan. In 1980 two Vespa PX 200s were ridden by M.Simonot and B. Tcherniawsky to reach the finish line of the second Paris to Dakar Rally. A truly remarkable series of achievements for a vehicle that had originally been designed to deal with urban transportation on city roads. Even till today it still travels far. Giorgio Bettinelli travelled on a Vespa from Rome in 1992 to reach Saigon in March of 1993. He then rode his Vespa 36,000km from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego in 1994-1995. In 1997 he would begin a globe spanning journey from Chile to Tasmania. In three years he would ride a distance of 150,000km across the Americas, into Siberia, then Europe, Asia, and finally Africa. The Vespa’s place in pop culture history was first established in the ‘Roman Holiday’ a 1952 film starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in which the Vespa plays a prominent role as the main vehicle the two lovers rode as they went sightseeing through the streets of Rome. The film almost singlehandedly introduced the world to the Vespa. It also had roles in films such as ‘Quadrophenia’, ‘American Graffiti’ by George Lucas starring a very young Harrison Ford and was also ridden in ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’. In 1956 it was reported that John Wayne often rode the Vespa to get from one set location to another. Other celebrities of film and entertainment that have owned or ridden Vespas include legends such as Henry Fonda, Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress, Jayne Mansfield along with current stars like Matt Damon, Gerard Depardieu, Jude Law and even Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson.

Since it’s appeared in 1946, the Vespa has become a perennial symbol of Italian youth culture.

In the United Kingdom it become a symbol of the 50s – 60s Mod-punk culture as the mods differentiated themselves from the leather wearing big bike culture prevalent at the time. In Italy and elsewhere the Vespa came to represent a sense of liberation, being carefree but with a dash of style. The young and trendy all rode Vespas on the streets of Rome and Milan. It became synonymous with the Italian youth scene. Although rarely encountered on the roads here the Vespa is well known in Malaysia due to local exposure to films and other entertainment and brand influences. Malaysian motor and auto enthusiasts are fanboys and girls of the Vespa and avid collectors. Recently a gathering had been held in October of 2011 at Tasik Titiwangsa, celebrating the Vespa. The 1Malaysia Vespa Jamboree was attended by over one thousand Vespa owners (affectionately known as ‘Vesparians’) from all over the country. Both young and old fans of this timeless scooter mingled and had fun while admiring the classic and newer models as they shone brightly in the sun. Representing freedom, leisure, style and comfort; the Vespa’s appeal cuts not only across borders but also eras. The Wet World Hot Spring Pedas is located 15km from Seremban town, along the old trunk road headed to Tampin. The hot spring in Pedas is believed to have been discovered by locals while grazing their cattle, when the hot water of the spring caused their cattle to scuttle away in fright. The Japanese army were also said to have camped here during their raid of Malaya and they used the hot water to treat their injured comrades. However, far from the view that the Japanese were met with back then, this area is now a fun-filled and well equipped recreational water park.

There are two types of hot spring pools to choose from – the public hot water pool or the private ones. Located on the Park’s boundary at the edge of the Mamut River, Poring Hot Spring & Nature Reserve offers chalets and hostels, a butterfly centre, an orchid conservation centre, a five acre tropical garden with an animal rehabilitation farm, picnic areas, hot pools and a canopy walkway overlooking the forest. Another highlight of this area are the Rafflesia flowers, the world’s largest flower that sometimes bloom in the vicinity of the hot springs.

360CELSIUS YEAR #2 PARTY @ URBANO E FRESCO

Last March, we threw a massive party at Urbano e Fresco @ Publika in celebration of our first year anniversary as well as our entrance into our second year in publishing. The turnout was almost double the amount that our humble expectations ever imagined, and for that we are ever grateful. Upon entering the venue, guests were invited to have their pictures professionally taken and processed on the spot, all thanks to Schmidt Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Guests were also treated to a unique experience with Klasiq’s Automatic Peephole Viewer display booth. With ‘Creativity’ being the main underlying theme of event, artistic expression was one of the attractions that night. The event saw talented artists Adeputra Masri and Donald Abraham collaborate live on a piece of art which was completed at the end of the party. Guests also got to join in the artistic fun thanks to the good folks at The Studio @ KL who set up all the tools, paint, and canvases for guests to Art Jam for free. Further entertainment for the night was provided by Mad Sally and the Aswara Percussion Ensemble (A.P.E.) who all played their hearts out to the crowd’s delight. YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen’s representative, Y.Bhg. Dr. Junaida Lee Abdullah Ministry of Tourism’s Deputy Secretary General helped launch the opening with Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, Founder and Deputy Chairman of Country Heights Holdings Berhad, Dianna Lee, Group Chief Executive Officer of Country Heights Holdings Berhad and Dr Henry Woo, President of the American Academy of Naturopathic Medicine at Seri Kembangan. The launch gambit was built by the employees of the Mines Wellness Hotel, as a unique bicycle-powered mechanism, which lifted the Mines Wellness Hotel’s new logo from the water feature in the Lobby symbolizing the rebirth of the Hotel into an environmentally conscious wellness getaway.

Held on 21st April 2012 at the Gardens Hotel and Residences (Mid Valley City), the highly interactive workshop was hosted by Alice Teoh founder and owner of emma lizs who was looked radiant and glamorous all in white. Teresa Dian Chew is a Certified Image Consultant. Her extensive experience globe-trotting around the world provided a wealth of experience that she shared with the audience in how to be a successful person. Pauline Low, has been a professional belly dancer for the past 7 years and led the audience on a mass dance session. Participants were thrilled to learn that not only can you achieve a great figure with belly dancing but importantly, you can have so much of fun doing it. As a grand finale, emma lizs gave away exclusive enliven skincare hampers each worth more than RM1,000 in a lucky draw.

On 18 April A Cut Above celebrated 33 years of excellence in hair salon with “33 Years & Beyond” a showcase of their skills in a fashionable Vogue Chic party at the Mid Valley fashion week. The show was presented in three segments from the Glamour of the 20’s to the 40’s, edgy runway trends of today with a twist, to an astounding Avant-garde collection. Wednesday’s showcase presented works by the creative team consisting of Joe T’ng, Faevien Yee and even Winnie Loo. Senior creative director Faevien Yee presented the collection “Miraculous”.
