Desert Meadows raises so much for Humane Society, it’s scary! Mr. Ren Fahey’s 5th graders auctioned off 17 decorated cakes to benefit the Arizona Humane Society this week as part of the class’s fall community service project. Basha’s master cake decorator visited the Desert Meadows students and demonstrated her cake decorating skills. The Halloween-themed cakes were then auctioned off with the bidding starting at $10. Their goal was to raise at least $200, but they actually raised $462! The highest bid for one cake was $60. Two $50 bids were also placed. The class will present a check to the Humane Society next week along with student-created posters promoting the adoption of animals.

Griffin, Canales are September’s Employees of the Month Employees of the month for September are Mr. Jeff Griffin, 5th grade teacher at Trailside Point, and Mrs. Espy Canales, ISD Associate at Vista del Sur. Griffin was recognized for showing tremendous growth in his students’ achievement. In order to meet each student’s needs, he creates literacy centers so he can work one-on-one with them in their reading fluency. He utilizes all instructional minutes and maximizes his student’s time on task. He also encourages collaboration among the families in his class. Canales was recognized for supporting the students and staff of Vista. She is a member of the school’s Site Council and is co-chair of the volunteer committee, which met their goal of having over 70% of families meet or exceed the seven-hour volunteer commitment.
