Gali’s Chocolate Package Design

SOLUTION
Design packaging for a chocolate bar line including a specialty box and a box of assorted bars. This assignment required students to come up with a company name and identity.
I named the company and made decisions about the type of chocolate and the target group. I also made a mood board and a project brief to define the parameters more clearly.
In creating the company I wanted it to be Swiss chocolate and organic. I looked up Swiss names and Gali was common. I used symbols from the cocoa plant. Beans to make a pattern for texture and a cross section of a cocoa pod for the assorted bar box. The Valentine’s Day box is a bed that slides out from a wrap box.

For the assorted box I decided to go back to a chocolate brown base. That’s a good neutral color for all three flavors and reflects the color of chocolate. Then I used the cocoa bean pattern to create a texture on the base. For the assorted box symbol I used a cross section of a cocoa pod stylized to be a nice piece of art. The typography is all Swiss. I used Antique Romain and Helvetica.
For the specialty box I wanted to do something different from all the other boxes. I thought about how the box could open and reveal the wonderful surprise within. I chose to make a cardboard bed and put all three chocolate bars in it stacked up. I made the inside of the bed pink and added pink and red stripes to the sides. For the outer box I used the cocoa bean pattern again and added a Valentine’s Day Heart. The company name is prominent on the front.
Moby Dick Book Cover Design PROBLEM

SOLUTION
To create a book cover that’s original and invites the customer to read the story. The assignment was to combine word and image in an interesting way or do a book cover if we desired. I chose Moby Dick because it’s a book where everyone knows the story and can judge the design solution.
Sketched the words over and over and tried to think of them as a good logo. Used the fact that they’re the same numbers of letters to my advantage. When combining them on top of each other thought of have a wave line transition between the two words.
I used typography to indicate what the book is about with a wave going through the title for a story at sea. The red sky representing something ominous is going to happen. On the back there’s the whale because I like it as a graphic element.

Velo Shoppe Branding Design PROBLEM

The assignment was to create a brochure for a bike shop. We could choose the business name and identity. From there we had to create logo, brochure, mood board and project brief.
I researched bike shops and brochures and modeled my shop after a shop in Oakland. I went there and took photos and talked to the staff.
Came up with a design for a store called Velo Shoppe. They specialize in vintage and custom bikes for young people in Oakland. The brochure, posters and business cards in 60’s style remind potential customers that they can get retro bikes at Velo Shoppe or get their vintage bike repaired. Sixties colors yellow, orange and teal are used.

Our Studio 2 assignment was to design a brochure for the fictitious company and fill it with text and content that made sense. I decided to continue with my 60’s theme using colors popular in that period. I collected reference on 60’s graphic design and found some work I liked. I did a spin off of that with the image of the two owners and a line and circle design. The other panels are mostly to inform readers about the store and the services they provide.
Tree Ornaments Product Design PROBLEM

Give yourself an assignment which uses the tools in Illustrator covered in class. I decided to create tree ornaments that I designer would like and could be sold on a design web site as a Christmas special like maybe The DieLine.
Looked online for tree ornaments that had a real designer feel but there were none. Started sketching what I would like to own. Came up with the three shapes and thought about icons. Went online and found templates.
I chose templates that were shapes that would work then came up with colors that were festive but not too Christmassy. Gold, red and blue were original. Then I created icons for each in a Christmas theme.
Tree ornament packaging. Since the ornaments were cardboard I decided the packaging should advertise that more and therefore I used recycled cardboard. The ornaments would be sold flat and customers would assemble them for the tree. Each package has two of each ornament.

Grape Factory Branding & Web Design PROBLEM

Create branding for a winery for hipsters called Grape Factory. Start with the logo and then continue to create full corporate branding including web site, annual report and design manual.
I researched wineries in the Napa and Sonoma regions looking at their branding from logo to web site.
I started with the logo and wanted to have a handcrafted feel but also communicate the “factory� idea so used gears as a pattern in the letters. Chose the company color to be purple like the grape. The web site is simple and easy to navigate. The annual report comes in a hand crafted box with the logo on the cover and is something special to give shareholders and customers.
To create the logo I started with a bold heavy font that would be substantial, clear and readable. I chose Impact because the letter shapes were perfect and it was exactly the look I wanted. I then went online and collected gears shapes and made a couple of my own. I tried to get a real variety of shapes to fill the letters in the most interesting way. I worked in Adobe Illustrator filling in the letter shapes and shuffling gears around until I got a desirable result.
In our branding design class we were asked to create a design manual for the company we created. I looked at examples of design manuals from CN and other companies to get an idea of what they were. I set up a grid in my software and laid out the pages giving clear instructions how not to use my logo.
Above: For the selection of bottles I wanted to keep with the handcrafted feel and do something different that would stand out on the shelf. I chose ceremic bottles and made to label gold for chardonay, black for red wine, and pink for rose. The gold label would be on a slightly darker bottle. Left: For the Grape Factory business card I put a large QR code on the front that when scanned takes the customer to the Grape Factory web site. The back of the letterhead has the gear pattern in purple.
For the Grape Factory web site I continued with the signature purple color and used the gear pattern in the background for texture. The logo is displayed prominantly in the top left with menu buttons in KG Chelsea font.
REPORT BOX
THE ANNUAL REPORT
When creating an annual report for the Grape Factory winery I continued thinking about hipsters and their DIY or handcrafted interest. I wanted the shareholders to receive something special and unique so I designed a box for the annual report with a 3D logo.
When the shareholder opens the box they see the white, gear patterned cover page and as they lift it out of the box an annual summary unfolds in their hands. The report in designed in an accordian fold and has four panels.
For the Grape Factory vehicle a hipster would drive a retro vehicle and I thought maybe a VW would be appropriate. The van is the hipest of VW’s harking back to the 60’s era. I applied the logo to the side and a gear to the front and back wrapping around the ends.
4SC Branding & Web Design PROBLEM

Create a logo for the pharmaceutical company 4SC in Germany. Their current logo does not work and needs a redisign. They make a pill that treats patients with cancer and make their lives better.
I filled pages of my sketchbook with logo ideas including designs inspired by the periodic table and designs with hexagons and beakers.
I started by finding a font with three letterforms that worked for the 4SC. Then I tried different graphics but decided on an array of pills spread out to look like a suns rays to symbolize how 4SC’s products improve lives and bring hope.

For the 4SC logo I created an array of pills to represent a sun shining to symbolize sun rays and 4SC as a beacon of hope to cancer patients who may take their medication. In the design manual I show how I used the golden section to lay out each of the pill shapes in a manner pleasing to the eye. The design manual dictates how to use the logo properly and what colors it uses.
For the 4SC web site I continued with the signature colors and used images of the medical and chemistry fields specifically as they relate to cancer treatment. The site is meant to inspire confidence in investors that 4SC is a leading company in this field and should be funded. The logo and the photography both share an emphasis on the development of medication in pill form for cancer patients.
Cat Snax Packaging Design PROBLEM

I really enjoy making patterns and made three for my Illustrator class. When it was time to make my portfolio my instructor said I needed something more than a pattern to show and it should be package design if I wanted to do that as a career.
My fabric patterns were all cat themed so I decided to design packaging for treats for cats. I sketched various designs for a small box of cat treats thinking of what I would buy as a cat owner. I also looked online to see what others had designed.
I came up with Cat Snax in three flavors one for each of my patterns. The box is a cat face with ears that pop up above the box and eyes at the top. I wanted a fun design that would get attention on the store shelf. The logo looks hand written and is loose and fun.

Bruno Shaving Kit Package Design PROBLEM

Create packaging for a line of cosmetics men’s or women’s. This includes coming up with the company name and identity for the project. The product line had to be high-end something you’d see in Neimann Marcus or Bloomingdale’s.
Went to Neiman Marcus and looked at packaging and decided to create a shaving kit for a hipster. It seemed like an interesting option as I didn’t see a lot of those. Started sketching logos and had many ideas.
The brand is named Bruno to create the sense that it’s a friend. Bottles chosen were retro antique style and typography was antique fonts Pretzel and Antique Roman. Hipster design has a lot of crests and seals so I let those shapes define my design on the packaging.

I continued with the antique theme purchasing bottles online that looked like they were from an old apothecary. I then thought about hipsters and how their graphic design often had all different shaped crests. I took antique paper and colored it green to have a masculine, classic feel and used it as a background. I made different crests according to product shape and used Antique Roman font for the typography. When working on this project I relied heavily on this mood board which I made the first week. I tried to capture the look and feel of a masculine and elegant hipster.

When designing the packaging for Bruno I wanted to have unique, memorable boxes for each object in the shaving kit set. For the brush, which is my favorite object, I chose a twisted box. I found a template on line and tailored it to be a bit taller and fit the brush. To emphasize the twist and bring in the branding green I added triangles of green on alternating panels and left those areas free of typography. I used the area on the top to place the logo, title and net weight.
For the razor box there was no template that could be tailored so I measured my straight razor and created my own template. The box tapers in two directions so at one end it comes to a small point and at the other it is large where the razor fits in. Again I brought in the green on alternating panels to emphasize the shape. For the label I made a crest in hipster style and used antique roman font with the Bruno logo and net weight.
ANTIQUE BOTTLES & MAHOGANY SOAP CONTAINER

Hipsters like all things retro including antique bottles and paraphernalia from the past. To guarentee that they will love their shaving kit and use it often I got antique bottles online. I chose an organic green for the aftershave bottle and maybe the lotion would be pine scented. For the shaving oil I went with a classic antique bottle color of rust which compliments the label nicely. For the shave soap bowl I chose a dark wood to fit in nicely with the other products.
The family of product boxes all have the branding green on antique paper combined with white for contrast. The look and feel is masculine and elegant. The crests are all different shapes and sizes according to the box. Each resembles a crest in a hipster style. I sketched the boxes in my notepad and then went online and found templates for each. They all had to be tailored to the products including a tapered box for the aftershave and a plain square box for the shave soap bowl.
BRUNO COLOGNE BOTTLE Once I saw the family of products I designed for the shaving kit I thought it needed one more very special bottle to make the set. I decided a cologne bottle would be the special family member as cologne often has a unique bottle. I wanted Bruno men’s cologne to be modern and sleek, something you want to pick up and use. I modeled it in 3D in Maya and then tried all different designs. I settled on having green glass slightly transparent to keep the branding identity. Then I went with a white label which is a bit special and different to distiguish it. The label is simple and just has the logo and the name cologne like the brush and the razor.
