Every country has its own religious holiday, but equal that of Sant’Agata, Catania’s patron saint, it is at least an arduous task. A mass mobilization in the city for 3 days and 3 nights in which the faithful gather to celebrate “Aituzza”, bringing the rich to shoulder “fercolo” followed by a procession of Candlemas. Officially, the day dedicated to the patron is February 5, but the celebrations start from 3 and are repeated throughout the year. WHO IS SANT’AGATA? Born in Catania from a rich and noble family, the devoutly religious Agata attracted the passionate interests of the Roman Proconsul Quintianus. Agata refused to be his wife, staunchly defending her honor and her faith. Proconsul’s courtship quickly turned to persecution. After enduring the horrific torture of being rolled on hot coals and having her breasts forcibly removed, Agata died on February 5, 251
