DAY TWO
DOWN ROYAL RACEOURSE
2.50 – The opening race on day two went the way of Gordon Elliot who struck with the promising three year old Mega Fortune. He stalked the pace setter throughout, jumping very slickly in the hands of Keith Donoughe. The pair stormed into the lead with just two flights left to jump and drew away to win by 13 lengths on the bridle. Eye catcher - Bobabout ran a big race in second, don’t be surprised to see him win a 3yo hurdle soon. 1:25 – Gigginstown had another winner thanks to Bel Ami De Sivola. Highly regarded by Noel Meade, he sat just off the pace and always had the second horse in his pocket. Looks one to follow a real neat jumper. Eye catcher – at a big price (28/1) Turbojet ran his heart out. Looked outpaced at one stage of the race, perhaps a step up to two and a half miles would be the making of him. 2:00 – Karl Thornton had another winner at Down Royal thanks to Wakea. The son of Cape Cross took charge coming down the hill and was never threatened in what looked a very competitive handicap hurdle. Eye catcher – Weightfordave caught my eye with some bold jumping, this fella may just need softer ground. Noel Meade will be hoping the rain will arrive. 2:35 – Valsuer Lido turned the feature race of the meeting into a procession as he surged past Silviniaco Conti. Henry de Bromhead’s charge travelled beautifully into the race and bold jumps at the final two fences saw off his rivals as the well backed 2/1 favourite. Eye catcher – Lord Scoundrel was the least fancied of the Gigginstown runners but ran a cracker to finish third. He seems an improved horse this year and could well win a G1 this season. 3:10 – Sub Lieutenant notched up back to back wins as he jumped beautifully to win this G2 chase. With crucial race fitness on his side, David Mullins had him up at the head of affairs. Outlander gave chase but never really got to threaten the winner. Eye catcher – Le Mercury ran so well for so long before tiring on his first run of the season. This horse looked really well in the paddock and some nice races await him later this season. 3:40 – Tiger Sam and Topper Thornton served up the finish of the day. Topper Thornton was travelling much better as they bypassed the final flight. But once he got to the front he idled and Tiger Sam got up to win by a neck. Donagh Meyler was at his strongest at get him home. Eye catcher – Balnogan Bay under a big weight looked outpaced a good bit from home, but stuck on respectably to finish 4th only beaten by 9 lengths. I would like to see him on softer ground, could be a money spinner for Thomas Gibney. 4:10 – Onefordave sent favourite backers home happy in the lucky last. Gordon Elliot ’s charge travelled strongly as they galloped into the home straight. He showed guts & determination to hold them all at bay. Clara Sorrento tried as hard as he could but could not reel in the winner. Eye catcher – Jimmie Brekkie is bound to win a bumper somewhere for local trainer Stewart Crawford after his 3rd place finish. He has been a very consistent horse and he’ll be winning one soon for sure

Gordon Elliott : 12:45 Friday Monbeg Notorious He's a nice horse, he's a big three mile chaser in the making. Ruby said he was idling in front, they weren't going fast enough. He was just popping away on him. He'll be a nice horse for the future. Whatever he does over hurdles is a bonus. The Storyteller was going well (when he fell). At least we know we have a nice horse .
Colin Kidd: 1.50 Friday Rashaan Last year the heavy ground along the winter just didn't suit him. We have been blessed with the weather the last couple of months. I am just going to keep him going while the ground is this way. Once the word 'heavy' appears in the ground he'll get a rest and come back for some of the big races in the spring. He is thriving on racing - the November Handicap, sixth in the Cesarewitch. second to Hidden Cyclone I think that's four runs in the last month. He is loving it and the good ground is the key to him. We went into the juvenile hurdle on St Stephen's Day last year as favourite and Apple's Jade and Jer's Girl were first and second. He doesn't jump as well on heavy ground. Today was the plan. If the weather stays this way he could go to Naas next Saturday for the four-year-old Grade Three. If the ground comes up no worse than yielding he could possibly run there. We never had any regrets (about not selling him when the offers came in). I never felt any pressure because I was never put under any pressure. The owners - my mother and Mrs Treacy - are into a good horse to enjoy him and are having the time of their lives going round the country. Unfortunately none of them are here today.
Gordon Elliott 2.25 Friday Wolfslair It probably wasn't the strongest race in the world and he is probably not much of a horse but today was his day, and he has had his day in the sun. It's nice to have a winner in Down Royal, we try to support this meeting as much as we can. It's a great racecourse and they are good people, so it's nice to get a winner. I'd imagine he'll be jumping a fence sooner rather than later. Noel Meade 4.05 Friday Joey Sasa He missed a couple of years, not because he was injured, it was because he wasn't broken as they couldn't catch him!. He's not too bad now. She just said he wants that ground. He jumps great. He's obviously decent. He stuck at it well and stays well. It looked a decent race beforehand.

Gordon Elliott 12;50 Saturday Mega Fortune in fairness to Keith (Donoghue) he has been with me from the start and we've had a few ups and downs. He is riding well and working hard. I think he is having his best season from when he was a 7lb claimer. We decided 11 stone is as light as he is going to do because he's a big fellow and let him do 2lbs overweight today because that's the confidence we have in him. Karl Thornton 2.00 Saturday Wakea it's been an awful summer for him - he tested positive for an anti-inflammatory that he didn't get in my yard and it didn't go out of his system for three months and he looked horrendous all summer. We came here because there was no novice hurdle in Ireland for him and he seems to be going the right way. When he learns how to jump he has a big engine and he looks like a horse that will jump a fence. In fact hurdles are nearly too small for him. He is still a big baby in a lot of ways. I can't believe we’ve got him - we paid 16,500gns (in February 2016) for him and he's a fine horse and sound as a bell Henry De Bromhead 2.35 Saturday Valseur Lido it was a super ride and he had been working very well. He's new to the yard so you don't really know but he did a lovely piece of work the other day. In that piece of work he just showed a gear that a real good three miler may not necessarily have. I'll speak to Michael and Eddie (O'Leary) and see what we'll do for the future. We offered the ride to Ruby and he came back and said he wanted to ride him. I wouldn't imagine he’d drop back in trip but he's new to me and Michael, Eddie (O’Leary) and Ruby know more about him. Gordon Eliott 4.10 Saturday Run For Dave he'll be a nice horse when he goes jumping hurdles but is only a baby. I'd say he's green more than anything and we'll probably go jumping hurdles with him now. That's his job done and it's good to have a couple of winners for the Sloans who are big sponsors (of the Grade 2 WKD Hurdle) up here.
