On behalf of the Airmen and families at Ellsworth Air Force Base, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Ellsworth Air and Space Show – Raider Country Open House. We have a weekend packed with military and civilian aerial acts featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the Air Combat Command F-22 demonstration teams, and a variety of bomber flyovers. There is also a vast array of static display aircraft, ground acts, entertainment, and much more – all as a way of helping you learn more about Ellsworth and to thank you for making our Airmen and their families welcome in the Black Hills. This is a special year at Ellsworth. We are celebrating our 80th anniversary of the base and the 80th anniversary of the historic Doolittle Raid. Ellsworth is proud to be home to three of the four squadrons that participated in the 1942 raid. This year we also celebrate the Air Force’s 75th birthday as well as 35 years of B-1 bomber operations at Ellsworth. We are thrilled to host our airshow on such a historic year. It is a great way to not only thank you for the tremendous support in helping us accomplish our mission of providing combat power and long-range strike for America – anytime, anywhere – but it honors the heroes who came before us and left a proud heritage and legacy. It is our hope that each of you feel more connected to the 28th Bomb Wing and gain a better understanding of our critical mission. We hope you have a memorable experience. Thank you for joining us…enjoy the show!

C
elebrating its 80th anniversary this year, Ellsworth has a storied history. The base laid its foundation as the Rapid City Air Base in January 1942 and the first bomber, the B-17 Flying Fortress, arrived that September. The base is home to three of the four squadrons that participated in the historic Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942: the 34th Bomb Squadron “Thunderbirds,” the 37th Bomb Squadron “Tigers,” and the 89th Attack Squadron “Marauders.”
THE RAIDERS
Eighty years ago, 200 Raiders -- 70 officer and 130 enlisted aviator, maintainer, and support Airmen -- volunteered for a secret and dangerous mission to deliver the first long-range strike of World War II. The mission was planned and executed only four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In fact, these Raiders were not 18

fully aware of their mission objectives until they were out at sea on the USS Hornet. On April 18, 1942, 16 B-25s crewed by 80 Raiders led by Lt. Col. James Doolittle struck the heart of Imperial Japan. They took-off knowing they would not return to the deck of the Hornet, expecting to bailout or crash land – yet each of them volunteered and heroically executed their mission. Their raid bolstered U.S. morale and struck a psychological blow to the enemy. Their efforts helped turn the tide in the Pacific. The Doolittle Raiders are central to Ellsworth’s heritage. They provided combat power for the nation and were the first to execute long-range strike… anytime, anywhere. Today's Airmen carry on their legacy and provide long-range strike capabilities in support of the U.S. and its allies.

GLOBAL DETERRENCE/ LONG-RANGE STRIKE TRADITION
Over the years, the installation has changed names, weapon systems, and missions – evolving to maintain its commitment to providing combat airpower for America that began with bombing missions during World War II to our current operations which stretch across the globe. Since 1997, Ellsworth has provided crucial long-range strike precision capability for numerous operations around the globe.

FACTS ABOUT THE B-1B C
arrying the largest payload of both guided and unguided weapons in the Air Force inventory, the multi-mission B-1 is the backbone of America’s global precision strike force. It can rapidly deliver massive quantities of precision and non-precision weapons against any adversary, anywhere in the world, at any time. The B-1B’s blended wing/ body configuration, variable-geometry wings, 22
2022 ELLSWORTH AIR & SPACE SHOW
and turbofan afterburning engines combine to provide long-range, maneuverability at sub and supersonic speeds while enhancing survivability. Forward wing settings are used for takeoff, landings, air refueling, and in some high-altitude weapons employment scenarios. Aft wing sweep settings – the main combat configuration --are typically used during high subsonic and supersonic flight, enhancing
the B-1B’s maneuverability in the low- and high-altitude regimes. The B-1B’s speed, precision weapons payload capability, and superior handling characteristics allow it to seamlessly integrate into mixed force packages. These capabilities, when combined with its substantial payload, excellent radar targeting system, long loiter time, and survivability, make the B-1B a key element of any joint/ composite strike force.

ob Freeman is an accomplished pilot with nearly 50 years and 6,000 hours of flying experience. He started flying in 1972 as a junior in high school. He then started flying aerobatics in 1981. His focus was on competitive aerobatics until 2017. He represented his country three times as a pilot on the US aerobatics team. Bob placed 4th overall at the World Championships in 2002. Bob’s sole focus is now on air show flying. Bob’s shows thrill crowds with high energy aerobatics choreographed to exciting music. He flies solo in his Extra 330LC and has substantial experience in high DA conditions. Bob is a retired mechanical engineer and was the Chief Technologist at Seagate Technology until 2016. During his career as an engineer, Bob was awarded 14 patents. Bob also has an inspiring story of persistence and hope as a cancer survivor. He credits the scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses and caregivers for his survival.

thanol is taking flight as America's premiere renewable fuel. The Vanguard Squadron flies a dazzling four ship formation aerobatic airshow powered by ethanol. Ethanol adds power and performance to the Squadron's aircraft without any major engine modifications. The team has over 3,000 flight hours using 100% ethanol. The Squadron shares their love for flying and raising
ethanol awareness by flying airshows across the country. The Squadron flies 10-15 airshow events each year. Flying across the country promoting ethanol as the fuel for the future has introduced the Squadron to many people interested in aviation and alternative fuel solutions. The Vanguard Squadron has been ethanol powered since the team began flying together in 1993 and are based locally in Tea, South Dakota.

om "Lark" Larkin was afraid of roller coasters and often got air sick in airplanes as a child. After a brief stint with radio controlled airplanes, he started flying lessons at age 19 while in college, and he earned his private pilots license in 62 days. Tom received an Aerospace Engineering degree from Georgia Tech, and then entered the Air Force for pilot training in 1984. Tom was selected as a T-38 Instructor pilot, and then progressed to the F-15C. He was awarded Top Graduate in F-15
school, and he flew 22 missions in North Iraq in support of Operation Northern Watch and Provide Comfort. Tom later was selected as an Instructor for the Air Force Fighter Lead-In School in the AT-38. He left active duty in 2000, and now resides in the Denver, CO area. Tom is a currently a pilot, instructor, and evaluator in the 737 for a major airline.
