STRESSLESS
WEDDING PREP
PUT TOGETHER A PLAN Sit down and decide how much time and budget you have to spend, and consider how many reliable helpers you have to help you along the way. It’s also important to stay organized. You’re going to be visiting with a lot of vendors and have a lot of information to keep straight. Whether you like keeping lists on your phone or creating spreadsheets, keeping track of important details is key.
CONSIDER HIRING HELP Your wedding day will be much more enjoyable if you’re not stressing over every little detail along the way. You might think hiring a wedding planner or coordinator is out of your budget, but there are benefits to having one that are worth the expense. Rylee Marie Photography
You may be super organized and creative, but when it comes time to walk down the aisle, all you want to feel is the love — not the stress.
EXCITING OR STRESSFUL?
One of the biggest advantages of hiring a professional is having someone with your best interests in mind. Full-service planners attend appointments with you and keep everything running smoothly, including on the big day. On the other hand, consulting and “day-of” services are an affordable option. They are less comprehensive, but are a great way to be able to relax on your big day without paying for a fullservice wedding planner.
R. Becker Creative
Until you really get into the preparations for your big day, it’s impossible to imagine exactly how much work is actually involved. If you work long hours, have lots of hobbies, or have children, you don’t want to be completely drowning in to-do lists during your engagement. Planning a wedding can be a lot of work. Just remember that the more prep you do at the beginning, the more relaxed your entire wedding planning process will be.
Remember, the key to a joyous and stress-free wedding is smart planning and knowing when to seek help. With the right approach, your journey to the altar can be as enjoyable as the day itself. 14 PLANNING

BUDGET CAN’T BUY MY LOVE Nobody likes to talk about finances, but it’s the one thing that can derail your wedding planning and cause stress faster than anything else.
CREATE A BUDGET Money will be a huge part of your celebration. To avoid racking up costs, know which professionals you need to make your wedding a success and the limits of what you can spend on each. If you will be receiving any assistance from family members, sit down and communicate about who will be paying for what.
STICK TO YOUR NUMBERS
Complete Weddings + Events
It might seem impossible to stick to a budget, but the last thing you want is to start your happily ever after in debt. Agree on numbers as a couple and make sure to revisit them before every vendor meeting to stay on track.
ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO BLOW YOUR BUDGET? Inviting too many guests. Each person who attends will increase your rentals, catering, beverages, and stationery, but can also require additional staff like bartenders or servers. While not required, it’s usually courteous to allow those who are contributing financially to have a say in the guest list. It’s a good idea to discuss who gets to add people to the guest list when you first sit down to discuss your budget.

WE DO
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD Your wedding ceremony isn’t just the start of a grand celebration—it’s the beginning of a thrilling new chapter in your life. As today’s bride, you have the unique opportunity to shape this experience to reflect both your individuality and your shared dreams as a couple. Here are some contemporary considerations for crafting the perfect start to your journey together.
CHOOSING YOUR OFFICIANT OR CELEBRANT:
Kene Photography
Whether you’re grounded in a specific faith or prefer a secular approach, selecting the right person to lead your ceremony is key. If you’re drawn to a religious ceremony, check early for any pre-wedding requirements. Alternatively, many modern couples opt for a non-religious celebrant or even a close friend who can become legally certified for the day. It’s all about finding someone who resonates with your values and personalities, ensuring your ceremony feels genuinely ‘you’.
EMBRACING PREMARITAL COUNSELING:
Mist & Moonlight Photography
This isn’t just old-school advice. Premarital counseling is a forwardthinking choice that’s shown to deepen connections and fortify relationships against future challenges. Covering everything from communication techniques to conflict resolution, it’s a proactive step towards a robust, fulfilling marriage. And let’s not forget it can be a real stress-buster during the hectic wedding planning phase!
CRAFTING PERSONALIZED VOWS: Your vows are more than words— they are a heartfelt commitment. Whether you lean towards the timeless elegance of traditional vows, complete with literary or scriptural references, or wish to craft something entirely unique, this is your moment to express what’s in your heart. Honoring family traditions by echoing the vows of previous generations can add a layer of depth and continuity, but don’t hesitate to infuse your personality and modern sensibilities into these promises. 18 PLANNING
Today’s brides have the wonderful opportunity to blend tradition with personalization, creating a ceremony that’s not just a formality but a true reflection of their journey and aspirations as a couple. #BLACKHILLSBRIDE

I N V ITATIONS Designing wedding invitations is a beautiful blend of tradition, personal style, and practicality. Here are some key tips to consider when creating your bridal invitations.
CONSIDER THE PAPER QUALITY
REFLECT YOUR WEDDING THEME
PROOFREAD, THEN PROOFREAD AGAIN
Your invitation is the first glimpse guests will have of your wedding, so it should match the style and theme of your event. Whether it’s rustic, classic, modern, or beach-themed, the design should set the tone.
Typos and errors in wedding invitations are more common than you think. Have several people review the invitation for any mistakes before you send it to print.
KEEP IT LEGIBLE While decorative fonts are tempting, readability is crucial. Choose fonts that are elegant yet easy to read, and make sure the font color contrasts well with the background.
PERSONALIZE WITH CARE Adding a personal touch, like a monogram or a watercolor illustration, can make your invitations unique. However, be cautious with adding too much personal information or overly quirky elements that might confuse guests.
MIND THE WORDING
The weight and texture of the paper can significantly impact the overall feel of the invitation. Higher quality paper often conveys a sense of luxury and importance.
BUDGET WISELY Invitations can range from budget-friendly to very expensive. Determine your budget early and stick to it, remembering to account for postage, which can vary based on size and weight.
THINK ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY If you’re environmentally conscious, look for recycled paper options or digital invitations. This can also be a cost-effective choice.
SAMPLE BEFORE YOU COMMIT If possible, order a sample of your invitation before placing the full order. This will give you a chance to see and feel the product in person.
The wording should reflect the formality of the event. Traditional weddings often follow a classic template, while less formal events might allow for more creative phrasing.
INCLUDE NECESSARY INFORMATION

PARTIES Kinsey Whidby Photography
GATHER WITH FRIENDS
ENGAGEMENT PARTIES Of all the pre-wedding festivities, engagement parties are probably the most overlooked. They were once a formal presentation of a newly engaged couple and the first meeting of the two sides of the family. Today they’re usually a more casual affair. Many couples choose to simply host a barbecue or invite guests to participate in something they enjoy doing together. It’s also a great excuse to throw a fun soiree or treat friends to happy hour. It’s all about you as a couple, so get creative!
SHOWERS Showers get their name from the tradition of “showering” the bride and groom with gifts that will help them start their new life together.
26 REAL ENGAGEMENTS
Today, many couples use showers as a reason to get together with family and friends to share good wishes and advice for the future. Traditionally held for the bride, showers have also started to include grooms in recent years. Ask if your partner would like to be included when you’re planning, or if they would like to make an appearance to meet your guests before the festivities get under way.
BACHELORETTE PARTY This is probably the event brides look forward to the most. It’s an excuse to get together with your best friends to say goodbye to being single and hello to your new life with your soulmate. Make sure you’re clear about your expectations for the event, such as who is invited and what activities you want to do. You don’t want guests to find out about expenses last minute. Also keep in mind that anyone who is invited to the bachelorette party should be invited to your wedding.
Lavender Bouquet Photography
What’s better than celebrating your new life together? Doing it more than once! While it’s up to you as a couple how many parties or showers you want to have, keep in mind they’re a great way to get both sides of the family together before the big day.

ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS
Use your photos for engagement announcements, wedding invitations, and to decorate your guest book and reception tables.
Engagement photos will capture this new adventure in your life and give you beautiful images to share in your announcement to family and friends. The engagement photo session gives you and your fiancé a chance to get to know your photographer and observe how he or she interacts with you before the wedding day. You will be more comfortable the day of the wedding knowing that all of your personalities blend, which can ease any tension or anxiety.
Be creative and highlight your favorite thing together. This will give the images your photographer captures a personal twist to be treasured for years to come.
Your photographer will be able to get to know the two of you during this time, as well. Do your eyes blink a lot? Do you need help in some posed shots? What angles look best for your facial expressions?
LOOK AMAZING
This session will save time when creating a timeless portrait on your wedding day.
28 REAL ENGAGEMENTS
SHARE YOUR IDEAS Talk to your photographer about locations you would like to visit and your ideas. Maybe you would love to have more candid pictures taken in a coffee shop. The better you communicate about what you are looking for in your pictures, the more likely you’ll get it.
Bring several outfits so as to choose the clothes that go best with each background. Keep in mind: solids are great and look good next to almost any backdrop. Also, it is important for your clothes to complement and look good next to your fiancé’s, but try to avoid looking like twins.

KENE PHOTOGRAPHY KENE BRINGS AN UNQUESTIONABLE COMMITMENT TO THE “WOW FACTOR” — AND HE DELIVERS THAT WITH SOME UNEXPECTED OPTIONS. For Kene Roberts, capturing weddings in photographs is about evolving and discovering fresh ways to create that “wow” factor. Kene teams up with his wife, Kasi, and occasionally fellow photographer, Josh Williams, to produce an outstanding experience for brides and grooms. As a trained graphic designer, Kene is able to produce masterfully edited photos that capture the art and the magic of the moment. “It is really the backbone of what I do,” he says. “I like to push the limits and test new editing techniques from the latest and greatest in editing and AI software.” And this artist has been able to craft some truly unique photos for his clients because of his editing prowess. He’s also taken the incredibly distinctive step of offering his clients the ability to print large-format prints in-house — anything up to 64 inches wide — including canvasses. This opportunity gives brides and grooms the uncommon option to have their wedding and engagement photos hanging on their walls at unheard of speeds. Kene’s unique approach may very well come from his unique background. “I deployed to Iraq for a year, and while I was out there, there was just so much to see,” he explains. “So I bought a little point and shoot camera.” From this little decision, Kene discovered a big outlet for his creativity and a new driving force for his passion.

BEAUT Y FEELING YOUR BEST
R. Becker Creative
You want to look your best on the biggest day of your life, whether that means a little help with your hair or a professionally crafted look. Plan ahead to make sure your look stays flawless from putting on your dress to your grand exit.
WEDDING-DAY HAIRSTYLE Having your hair done by a professional is important to ensure that your style will withstand countless hugs and unknowns throughout the day. When meeting with your stylist, bring photos of hairstyles you like, but remember to stay flexible. Schedule a trial run several weeks prior and bring along any accessories you plan to use.
THE PERFECT LOOK Makeup for big events works a little differently than your everyday look. A professional makeup artist can help you choose a look that complements your skin tone and will last all day long. As with all beauty services, schedule a trial run prior to your wedding day. Bring photos and communicate the look you want, but be open to suggestions.

MANICURED NAILS Your hands will be on stage for the entire day – signing the license, showing off rings, and hugging family. Make sure to get a good manicure a day or two before your wedding to avoid chips or breaks on the big day.

WA LK IN ST Y LE We know shopping for the wedding dress is the most anticipated pre-wedding moment for brides, and it should be all fun. But having so many choices makes it easy to get overwhelmed. Plan ahead and follow these tips for the best shopping experience.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Unless you plan for a twelve-month or longer engagement, set a budget right away and start looking for your wedding dress up to nine months before the wedding day. At the same time, don’t procrastinate these important pieces to your wedding day. Some dress designers require six to eight months to produce a dress; others may be quicker or even longer, so be sure to ask. Order early to avoid rush-order fees and to allow plenty of time for fittings, alterations and, of course, Murphy’s Law (whatever can go wrong, will).
ALTERED TO FIT Don’t fixate on the size of the dress, but instead on how your measurements compare to the designer’s chart. Gown sizes usually run one to two sizes different than your everyday clothes. To achieve a perfect fit, your dress will likely need minor alterations, best done by a professional seamstress. Don't take a gamble by letting an amateur make your alterations. Complete Weddings + Events
COME TO TERMS When you imagine yourself walking down the aisle, how would you describe the dress style you are wearing? If you need help with the terms to use, become familiar with specialty fabrics and dress silhouettes to help you communicate the details of what you want. If you are still searching for that certain look, flip through these magazine pages and mark the dresses you like for your consultant. Have a budget in mind before you go, and don’t be afraid to communicate your budget with the professional helping you at your appointment. After all, they are there to help your dress dreams come true and to provide you with the best shopping experience possible.
The details of your ceremony – the season, how formal it will be, the location, theme, etc. – should be used as a guide in choosing a dress. Select a fabric and finish that is appropriate for the location and weather of your wedding day. Each possible scenario calls for a different style of dress, so be sure to share this information at your appointment.

THE GROOM A SHARP-DRESSED MAN Henry Roy Photography
The groom, like the bride, has the option of purchasing, renting , or having wedding-day attire tailor-made. Purchasing a tux or a suit is a good investment and can be worn over and over again — especially for your career. Rented formal wear usually includes a jacket, vest, shirt, neckwear, cufflinks, pants, and shoes. Remember to recognize the importance of the day and know there are options to fit your style.
GROOM’S CHECKLIST n n n n n n n n n n
Yes, the spotlight of the day will no doubt be on the lovely bride, but the groom should look good, too. Whatever the degree of formality the wedding theme may carry, these tips will help when ordering attire. First, it’s beneficial to know that formal wear can be separated into four styles: black tie, formal, semiformal and casual. The time of your ceremony will strongly influence the level of formality, in turn influencing the attire. Other considerations such as color and theme will also play a part in the selection. You will want to give yourself plenty of time to order your attire. Formal wear should be reserved or purchased at least six months in advance and all measurements taken at least three months prior to the wedding to allow plenty of time for alterations. If your groomsmen live in different parts of the country, have them measured by a local tailor and the details forwarded to your store. Be sure to check in with your groomsmen periodically to ensure that everyone is on schedule with alterations. 40 BEAUTY & FASHION

FIND YOUR STYLE Determine the photographer’s style – is it photojournalistic or traditional? Look through social media pages and websites for a sample of a photographer’s work. Then, decide which style matches the look you’re going for. The photojournalistic style captures little moments, rather than poses, creating candid and spontaneous images that convey the genuine emotion of your day as it naturally unfolds. You will end up with a wide array of shots, some you may not have even witnessed, and they will serve as a record of the great time your guests had. Traditional, formal photography refers to posed pictures. These usually consist
42 BEAUTY & FASHION
of standard poses, such as the wedding party, the couples’ families, the shots of the bridesmaids with their bouquets, the groom with his parents, and the happy couple gazing into each other’s eyes. Generally, most photographers will have a mix of both styles. Where they begin to differ lies in their editing techniques. Some professionals will apply basic retouches while others will place filters and color corrections on your images. Be sure to look at many galleries and choose the style you like best.
SHARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS Open and clear communication is essential to getting the wedding photos you’re counting on. Share your expectations, and never assume that your photographer knows what you

want. Vague terms like “modern,” “closeup” and “artistic” can mean very different things to a bride and her photographer. One way to be sure everyone is on the same page is to go through sample shots together, identify ones you like and explain why you chose those images. If you have certain images you want to have taken, ask for them and create a shot list with the vendor you have chosen. Talk with your photographer, and be honest about your expectations. Making a “must-have” list will help ensure that nothing is missed on your wedding day. When you are creating your shotlist, be realistic and understand the timetable you are giving to your photographer. Don’t expect 20 different shots in a fiveminute window.
Henry Roy Photography
COVERING ALL THE ANGLES When looking through your options, consider a wedding package that includes a second photographer. Your photographer cannot be in more than one place at a time, and a second camera will help capture all important moments from a different angle. While one person photographs the bride throwing her bouquet, the second shooter can focus on all the ladies who are diving for it. While one takes family photos, the other can catch details at the reception. While one photographer captures you walking down the aisle, the other can capture your groom’s expression at the altar.
CREATE A SCHEDULE Your photographer can help you establish a wedding-day schedule, taking into account your photo shot list. Instead of having the wedding party and family members milling around for several hours waiting for their photo opportunity, give them the schedule showing when they need to be where.

customize a package based on your shot list, needs and budget. Are engagement photos included in the packages? Be sure to ask! If you want all your images, ask about the fee for digital access to your photo gallery.. Oftentimes, photographers have a watermark on the photos they take, so find out if your digital images will have the mark removed.

Next, ask about the type of album designs offered and if they provide any assistance in creating your keepsake. It’s common for couples to need help in narrowing down the hundreds of images from their wedding day. Find out if retouching, color adjustment or other corrective services are provided for an additional fee. Lastly, find out about the proofing and ordering process. It’s typical for images to be viewable online and ordered through your photographer. Ask how much time will pass after the wedding before you will see the proofs, and how long after you order your photos and album until you will receive them. Be patient, and remember this process does take time.
PHOTO DISPLAYS Photo displays are a great way to showcase the coming together of two families. Featuring photos from your childhood up to your engagement is a creative way to introduce yourselves. Here are a few ideas to add that personal touch.

Design photo-lanterns to use as centerpieces or to hang around your reception area. They are decorative and a great source of soft light. Glue old photo frames together in a triangle shape to create table centerpieces – put a candle in the middle for added effect.

Ask friends and family for photos of you, the groom or you as a couple and hang them at the reception. Try displaying them on a picture board or with string and clothespins. Placing pictures of you and your groom at different ages, perhaps corresponding with wedding-table numbers, gives a personal touch to your table arrangement and seating plan. However you choose to display your images, the possibilities are endless! #BLACKHILLSBRIDE

LOVE IN MOTION
Before hiring a videographer, ask to see examples of their work to ensure it is the style of filming you want for your day.
You have worked to plan the most beautiful day, and where photography can capture the still moments of your wedding, there is still a story in motion waiting to be told. Videography is the perfect way to replay your wedding day memories over and over again – capturing the little things, like the fluid movement of the bride making her way down the aisle or the groom’s reaction as he sees her.
KNOW YOUR OPTIONS Videographers are professional storytellers, so you will want to make sure that they are able to capture the parts of your story you want to tell. For example, in addition to the wedding day

video of your ceremony and reception, you and your fiancé might want to consider having your vendor create a short clip – perhaps of how you met and fell in love – to show at your rehearsal dinner. Having this kind of video at your event is a fun way for family members and friends to get to know you as a couple, if they haven’t had the chance. You will need to have interview questions for your videographer to ask you as they film your clip. Practicing what you want to say can help calm your nerves in front of the camera. When you begin planning your budget, allocate an adequate amount

for a professional – it’s worth it! You won’t want the shots to be blurry or the sound to be muffled as you replay your wedding day a year later.
WHY VIDEO? Professional videographers work hard to capture everything from the big, wide shots of the day, to the smallest detail — hands coming together, smiles, tears, and other beautiful moments. They accomplish this with an expert understanding of both video and sound. With a recent rise in the availability of drone photography, many videographers are utilizing this technology to get cinematic shots of venues that work to establish a sense of place. Sound is an incredibly important aspect of a high quality video that many couples might not think about. Great sound doesn’t just happen. A good videographer will strategically place microphones throughout the ceremony and reception areas to ensure that the sounds captured are as close to reality as possible. Walking away from your wedding day with a professionally-produced video is a keepsake that you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. Future generations, too, will find your professionally-produced wedding video a way to go back in time and get a glimpse into your special day.
QUESTIONS TO ASK: • Do you have my date available? • How long have you been in business? • What is included in your price? • What is the payment schedule? • How would you describe your filming style? • What input do you need from us? • Have you shot at my venue(s) before?
• Will there be a second shooter? • What do your camera and equipment look like? Do we need to provide anything? • Is there a backup plan if there is equipment failure on our wedding day? • How long after the wedding do we wait for our copy of the video? • What is your cancellation policy?

NATHANIEL WILSON VIDEO
THE MAGIC OF A WEDDING IS MADE UP OF SWEET, SMALL MOMENTS. WITH VIDEO, YOU CAN ENSURE THAT THOSE PRECIOUS MEMORIES WON’T BE LOST TO TIME.
Nathaniel Wilson is a videographer who believes video allows you to not just remember your wedding day, but relive it. “I think that video has the ability to encapsulate entire moments as they play out,” he says, “It’s the only way to see the full range of emotions unfold in real time. It’s really powerful.” When capturing those living moments of a wedding, Nathaniel starts with a servant’s mindset. “I am there to ensure that my couples get the wedding video that they want or envision when they first booked me.” Nathaniel goes to any length to make that promise a reality. From drone footage, to working with DJs to ensure crystal clear sound, to multi-camera setups and more, Nathaniel is always on the move to discover those treasured moments that might get lost to time. “Anything and everything can happen at a wedding. I’m able to adjust to anything that might transpire. It really is my goal to capture as much of the wedding day as possible.” For Nathaniel, it’s those small, sweet moments that make revisiting a wedding through video a magical experience. “It’s that embrace from grandma during the family photos or the tear on the groom’s face during the first look — things that people might not even had noticed while it was happening.” Trust the professional, candid and cinematic keepsakes of Nathaniel Wilson to help you re-experience your big day in one of the most timeless ways possible.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Saturday nights and summer holiday weekends are popular for wedding dates and fill up fast. If you’re interested in these times for your celebration, book your venue immediately.
Where to hold your wedding reception is a big decision. Not only does the venue make up a large portion of your budget, but also it sets the scene for your celebration of a lifetime. To help narrow down options, it’s best to have a plan.
FIRST THINGS FIRST Start by creating your vision. Whether it’s from all the pins you’ve gathered or photos you’ve seen in magazines, you will start to see a theme emerge. From rustic settings with old-time charm to large event spaces that have a contemporary feel, your options for venue styles have limitless opportunity. Next, it’s time to talk about the other “m” word—money. As hard as this may be, it is important to allocate your funds before starting your wedding arrangements. Although it is a large portion of your budget, you won’t want to spend every penny on your venue to find out that you can’t afford your ideal DJ. Review our budget basics in the back of this book to get started.
You’ll also want to have a timeframe in mind, as well. The best suggestion is to start with a season of the year and then pick three dates that work for you, your fiancé and close family and friends involved in the wedding. By having more than one date to choose from, you will be more flexible for venue availability and work schedules.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST When you are ready to sign on the dotted line, be sure to negotiate your contract. When discussing costs, especially for food and beverages, make sure to get the price inclusive of tax and gratuity. All details of your reception should be written in a contract signed by you and the venue representative.
BEFORE YOU CALL Have an idea of your guest-list numbers. No, this doesn’t have to be the final, set-in-stone list—but it does give you a good idea of how many people you will need to fit into your venue. Sites have maximum capacities; having an estimate of the number of guests will allow you to narrow down your list right off the bat.

WILLOW SALON AND SPA WE REALLY WANT BRIDES TO BE ABLE TO HAVE COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE TRUST IN THEIR HAIR AND MAKEUP TEAM, WHETHER THEY CHOOSE US AS THEIR ARTISTS OR NOT. Kat Muller and her team at Willow Salon and Spa are committed to taking the stress out of weddings, and they know that hair and makeup artists can have a lot of sway on how the big day goes. “Stylists are responsible for helping brides feel beautiful and comfortable, of course, but we also play an important role in making sure the schedule runs smoothly on the morning of the wedding. We are pros at setting the pace, ensuring that the bride and her party are taken care of on a proper schedule.” Choosing a hair and makeup artist is a big choice, and it’s one that Kat hopes brides don’t rush into. “Give yourself plenty of time and do your research,” she said. “Brides will go out and book their venue the same week that they’re engaged; you should consider doing something similar with your hair and makeup artists.” Kat went on to offer these four tips to brides when
they’re thinking about whom to book as their hair and makeup artist: • Ensure that your hair and makeup professionals can take on the size of your bridal party. • Don’t be afraid to ask to see a salon’s previous work or even ask for references. • Make sure that your hair and makeup artist match your style and mesh well with your personality. • Ask for a contract. A last minute cancellation from an artist before the wedding can be devastating; a make sure that there is a plan in place if this does happen. Contracts exist to protect both the bride and the hair and makeup teams.
Our team takes a lot of pride in the fact that we go above and beyond simply doing hair and makeup for brides. We absolutely love being a part of our bride’s day. We can handle large parties, and love to travel all over the Hills. BLACKHILLSBRIDE.COM

DETAILS SET THE STAGE
Whether you’re a boho babe or a classic bride, the decor you choose sets the stage for your entire celebration. Pulling off a beautiful wedding takes a lot of planning — and a lot of decor.
IndigoBlue Photography
PICK YOUR STYLE You may want to design some of your decor yourself, such as personalized signs or monogrammed centerpieces. It’s a great way to add personality to your wedding while also saving money. Most of your decor, however, will likely need to be rented. This includes floral settings such as vases and aisle stands, tents, aisle runners, and specialty pieces like wine barrels, arbors, or creative centerpieces.
BEYOND THE DECORATIONS Your rentals will also include items that aren’t decor. Depending on your venue and caterer, you may have to rent your table settings. This includes dinnerware, flatware, and glassware for both dinner and cocktail hour if you’re having one. You will also need linens like tablecloths and napkins. You can also rent fun items like a cotton candy or snow cone machine, or even bouncy castles if you have a lot of kids in attendance. For a more artsy vibe you can even rent classic cafe string lights to add to your reception. The options are endless, and there are plenty of great vendors around the Black Hills that can make your dream setup a reality! Henry Roy Photography

FILL THE FLOOR
You spend months making sure every little detail is set, and now it’s time for a little fun. Music sets the tone for your wedding by elevating emotions, filling awkward silences and getting guests on the dance floor. Follow these tips and work closely with your musician or DJ to ensure an amazing celebration.
ON THE MIC The best DJs for wedding reception entertainment have the ability to go with the flow and are quick on their feet. You will want yours to be flexible if any changes to your playlist or set-up arise. If your DJ is acting as the master of ceremonies, discuss his or her level of involvement and work closely with your vendor in planning to keep your reception on schedule.
PLAYLIST VARIETY After the formalities of the ceremony, you and your guests are ready to get the party started! Ask your DJ or band for a playlist so you can choose songs you would like played at the reception. This is a great way for you to select specific dance music, rather than expecting the DJ to guess your preferred genre.
88 RECEPTION
BOOKING A MUSICIAN Live music at a wedding celebration is a great touch that can really personalize your event. Musical styles vary, so choose a performer that will best suit your occasion. Instrumentalists are a classical choice and bring a more traditional sound to the ceremony. Vocalists and small ensembles are another great option for the musical sound of your wedding. Set up your entertainment’s section in a location that works best for both you and them, but consider the sound of the performance in the location you choose. Most musicians bring with them what they need to perform – they will simply need a place to sit at your venue. Still, it doesn’t hurt to ask if they have any other needs, such as bottles of water or proximity to electrical outlets. Professional DJs and musicians are knowledgeable and will have quality equipment, including a back-up system to avoid the chance that you could be without music.

LIGHT THE NIGHT Complete Weddings + Events
Pay attention to where you can add some much-needed light to improve the space. Adding to your head table, the dance floor, your cake table and the caterer’s set-up are always great ideas. Check if your venue has dimmers, allowing the brightness to be adjusted. Make sure the venue has enough power to handle extra lighting. Blow a fuse and it is lights out (literally)! Schedule a time to visit the venue to work out the technical details. Items such as windows and house-light locations will be factors for your lighting professional. If you have an outdoor venue that will need to be lit, visit the location when it’s dark. This way you know how much light is needed.
Your ceremony or reception site may need a little (or a lot) of help to give it a look that will take your guests' breath away. Lighting will enhance the beauty of your event design and transform your space into a unique and flattering environment. Ask your wedding consultant, venue or DJ if this service is offered. Adding lighting design to your event will take it from ordinary to extraordinary. Light decoration is an art form, and an experienced professional will know where to place the lights to create the effect you are looking for. These vendors can transform a room and make it magical by using personalized monograms, uplighting, lighted backdrops and so much more. Opt for colors that accent skin tones; consider using softer lighting during dinner and darker shades during your dance. These subtle changes can smooth the transitions between cocktail hours, dinner and dancing.

TERMS TO KNOW PIN SPOT
A focused beam of light that shines directly onto an object, like a centerpiece or wedding cake, to create a highlight effect. COLOR WASH
A blanket of colored light covering an entire area to create a mood or to change the look of built-in décor. GOBOS
Circular stencils that are put over a light to project a design
or pattern onto a wall, ceiling or floor. Monograms, dates and wedding motifs are popular gobo designs. LED
Short for “lightemitting diode,” LED lights use much less electricity than (and don’t get as hot as) regular incandescent lightbulbs. They can also be wireless, which makes them even more discreet. LEDs are great for color changes and vibrant hues.

FLORALS BLOOM FOREVER Flowers are more than just your bouquet; they add personality and bring your celebration to the next level. Before you meet with a florist, there are a few things you should think about.
REMEMBER YOUR BUDGET Start out with eight to ten percent of your overall budget for flowers and reception decor. Discuss your wedding style as a couple, and pinpoint how much of your decor you’d like to be flowers. Keep in mind that most flowers can be ordered all year, but ones that are in season will generally be less expensive.
FIND YOUR FLORIST Once you have your budget set and have an idea how many arrangements you need, it’s time to set up meetings with florists to create your style.
Haley Mercedes Photography
A florist will guide you toward the types of flowers and designs that will suit your style and budget. When you meet with them, it’s helpful to bring pictures of flowers and designs that you like, but stay open-minded to their suggestions or recommendations. Some flowers you like may be expensive or hard to get out of season, but florists will be able to suggest alternatives that achieve the same look.
Hannah Nicholas Photography
Make sure you account for bouquets and boutonnières for your bridal party and family members, plus table arrangements you will need for the reception.

TIMELINE FLOW OF EVENTS
FIRST DANCE
You’re married — now let the party begin! Before your big day, talk to your emcee (usually your DJ or bandleader) about your reception timeline.
The couple’s first dance may be followed by father-daughter, motherson and other special dances. Then, the floor is opened for everyone.
COCKTAIL HOUR Let your guests mingle and enjoy a beverage or hors d’oeuvers before the reception starts. This is a great way to occupy time while you’re finishing up pictures or flipping a room from a ceremony setup to reception.
CAKE CUTTING
ENTRANCES
BOUQUET & GARTER TOSS
The emcee introduces the bridal party as they enter the room. Be sure to leave a path between the tables for everyone to walk (or dance) through. The bride and groom are announced after the wedding party is seated.
Gather all the single guests in attendance for the bride’s bouquet toss and groom’s garter throw.
After your guests have had time to hit the dance floor, it’s time to cut the cake. You can also play this one by ear; cutting the cake is a great way to mix things up if dancing slows down.
GRAND FINALE Announce your last dance, and any grand exit plans like a sparkler arch or confetti. It’s a great photo op so make sure your photographer is ready.
WELCOME This is an opportunity to welcome your guests as a couple, or for your parents to if they are hosting. This is also a great place to include a premeal prayer or blessing if you’d like.
DINNER Each table will move through the buffet line or will be served by waitstaff. The bride and groom are usually served first as the guests of honor.
TOASTS
Elsie Fortune Photography

WHAT IF...
RAIN
HEAT
Take a practice walk to see if your shoes are going to stick into the ground or slip and slide. Consider purchasing umbrellas for each of your guests to use, or send out a message asking your guests to come prepared for the possibility of wet weather.
You want your guests’ hearts to melt, not the frosting on your cake. If your wedding day is projected to be a scorcher, talk to your baker in advance. You can also provide your guests with paper fans to keep cool during the ceremony.
COLD Have your bridesmaids wear a wrap, shrug, or cape to keep the shivers under control during the ceremony. You can also look into renting space heaters for the reception.
If you are using candles at your ceremony, try placing glass covers over the flames to keep them burning strong. Tack down any flowy curtains or other loose materials to prevent them from blowing away. Don’t forget to secure your hair with setting spray and pins to ensure flawless hair in the breeze. 100 RECEPTION

CATERING MENUS & MYTHS There are so many options when it comes to the type of catering and the choice of food you decide to serve. Likewise, there are misconceptions to go with each. Here are a few common, budget-friendly reception menu myths debunked by local culinary experts.
One of the hottest trends in dining and catering right now is boards. From the classic charcuterie board to the increasingly popular butter and breakfast boards, these tasty and beautiful spreads are a fun option that can add some flair to wedding food. In fact, a substantial enough grazing table could even allow you to cut down on your main courses, potentially helping your budget.
BEEF WILL CUT INTO YOUR BUDGET It’s commonly recommended to skip the beef and opt for “more affordable” chicken. However, many caterers can work wonders with different cuts of beef, making it a great alternative. You may have to forego the filet mignon, but a skirt steak cooked to perfection and served with a mouthwatering reduction sauce can be equally as impressive.
PLATED DINNERS ARE EXPENSIVE People have been trying to figure out the cost difference between buffet-style meals and plated options for years. It truly will depend on your guest list and the vendor you choose. Buffets provide an array of options to guests, while plated meals control portion sizes.
CHEERS TO YOU Most people associate weddings with champagne toasts, but there are other drinks to consider for your big day, too.

BOARDS & GRAZING TABLE WILL HURT YOUR FOOD BUDGET
WINES Both reds and whites are great culinary complements. BEER Providing beer on tap for your guests is a great alternative to an open bar. This can be a perfect compromise for both your guests and your wallet. Add locallybrewed favorites for an additional twist. COCKTAILS A unique way to include a special memory is to create a signature cocktail to feature at your reception. COFFEE Java lovers who want something different can set up a coffee bar with an array of flavored syrups and toppings like whipped cream and shaved chocolate. Guests will love it, especially if you are hosting your event in the winter months. #BLACKHILLSBRIDE

THE PERFECT MENU
Rylee Marie Photography
SAVORY EATS After you have secured a venue, one of the most expensive budget items you’ll have is your caterer. Here are a couple thing to think about as you plan a menu.
DECISIONS
LET’S TALK ABOUT IT Like your attire and decor, your wedding menu should reflect your style. Don’t let preconceived notions dictate your menu choices. If there’s a taco place that you and your darling adore, talk to the manager about catering. If your families are carnivores, maybe ask a local barbecue pit master if they’d cater your reception.
Hannah Nicholas Photography
If you’re having a hard time choosing a menu, think about your favorite meal or one that has significance to you as a couple. It’s a fun way to share a piece of your love story or honor your family’s favorite recipes. You can also work with your caterer to come up with something that’s all your own!
STEAK YOUR CLAIM
REMEMBER Just like the other items on your wedding to-do list, give yourself plenty of time to plan and decide.

DELIGHTS SOMETHING SWEET
Kinsey Whidby Photography
Want to save the top tier of your cake for your first anniversary? Make sure you take off all the decor and garnishes before freezing. Or, ask your baker if they’ll include a fresh one in the price of your cake.
Complete Weddings + Events
Weddings and cakes go hand-in-hand, but they can get expensive fast. Between flavor and icing choices, decorating, assembly, delivery, and serving costs, you can eat through your cake budget quickly. Before you head to your first cake tasting, here are a few things to think about.
KEEP IT SIMPLE If you need to save, consider a smaller cake and add on a simple sheet cake to be served in addition to it. If you have your heart set on a multitiered cake, ask your baker if they can substitute a couple layers for foam. You’ll get the look you want without the hefty price tag.
108 RECEPTION
Lavender Bouquet Photography
The same goes for your cake design. The more trimmings and decorations you have, the more it will cost. Consider a minimalist look, or get creative with florals and decorations that match the rest of your reception.
TRY SOMETHING NEW You don’t have to have a cake at all if you don’t want to, and anymore, many couples don’t! Serve sweet treats like cookies, donuts, or even a do-it-yourself s’mores station if you’re having an outdoor wedding. Have a favorite candy from a local bakery? This is the perfect time to share how incredible their treats are with your guests.

LET’S PARTY FILL THE FLOOR
Elsie Fortune Photography
You’ll want to have an emcee throughout the night. From introducing you as a couple to announcing when dinner is served, having someone on the mic is important. Be sure to ask your DJ or band if they’re up to the task!
112 RECEPTION
You spend months making sure every little detail is set, and now it’s time for a little fun. Music sets the tone for your wedding by elevating emotions, filling awkward silences and getting guests on the dance floor. Follow these tips and work closely with your musician or DJ to ensure an amazing celebration.
BAND OR DJ? When it comes to picking reception entertainment, a great first step is to find someone with your taste in music. Love country western? A live band will have your guests boot scootin’ boogieing into the night. Prefer the latest pop hits? A DJ might be the way to go.
PLAYLIST VARIETY After the formalities of the ceremony, you and your guests are ready to get the party started! You’ll surely have favorite songs you want to hear throughout the night, so make sure to communicate your must-haves with your DJ or bandleader. Keep in mind that your guests will want to make requests too. There may be meaningful songs to them they want to share or a latest hit they’re excited to groove to. If there are any songs you’d rather not hear — not everyone loves the chicken dance, for example — make sure you let your musicians know in advance.

FUN&GAMES
Camera & Co. Photography
PARTY ’TIL DAWN
Playing games or having a photo booth at your reception is a great way to switch things up and involve guests who might not like to dance. They also give guests a chance to take a break, refill their beverages, or grab a piece of cake.
PHOTO BOOTHS Capture the moments your guests enjoy at your wedding with a photo booth. Not only will you get to see all the fun your family and friends had on your big day, but this unique form of entertainment will add instant fun for guests both young and old. When you talk to photo booth vendors, make sure to ask whether their setup comes with props or if you’ll have to pay an additional fee. It’s smart to have a list of all the props so you can make sure they’re all returned at the end of the night. It can be fun to come up with your own, too!
THESE ARE SOME POPULAR GAMES YOU MIGHT INCLUDE CLINKING GLASS this tradition is popular yet simple. Every time guests clink their glasses, the newlyweds must kiss. You can also place small bells on tables to avoid breaking or damaging any glassware. HE SHOE GAME this is a reception ritual that has T gained traction over the years. Sit in a chair backto-back, then remove your shoes and exchange one with your spouse. The host of the game (often the DJ) reads off questions like “who is cleaner?” or “who asked the other out first?” After the question, the couple must put up a shoe to indicate who they think it best describes. ANCE FOR A DOLLAR this tradition happens D when everyone is dancing. Guests can dance with the bride or groom — for a price! With each dance, the guest must donate a dollar, which can be pinned on the newlyweds or thrown in the air around them.
GAMES Including games isn’t a must, but one or two can really add some fun to the reception, especially if you have a lot of kids in attendance.

HONEYMOON Weddings can be expensive, and it might be tempting to short-change your honeymoon. Reconsider before you do! This is your opportunity to put a pause on life and celebrate the commitment you’ve just made, so it’s worth taking one if your budget allows. Start by writing independent wish lists for your trip. Include things like: Where you want to go What you want to see What activities you want to do How long it will take to get there How much time you can take off Once you’ve made your lists, share them with each other and compare. Will your vacation be relaxing or active? Will it be on a resort or a ship? Planning your trip together will ensure that both your wishes are met.
PREPARE BEFOREHAND You may know you need a passport, but what about medical needs and vaccinations? Some

countries have requirements you’ll need to meet before traveling, and it’s better to be safe than sick during your honeymoon. Also do your research on any resorts or excursions you plan to book. Make sure you know exactly what’s included in an all-inclusive package; oftentimes things like meal and alcohol packages are extra. Double-check transfers, taxes, and gratuities, too.
USE A PRO Make those dreams of romance and bliss a reality by hiring a certified travel agent. A professional is familiar with “everything travel,” which will save you time and money by avoiding hidden fees, poor service, or unpleasant surprises. Travel agents know all the ins and outs of multiple destinations, and will have invaluable, local advice to make your honeymoon as safe and enjoyable as possible. They’re also able to get you discounts on lodging, airfare, and more so you can afford your dream trip.
