EXPERIENCE THE GRANDEUR
It’s a bucket list item for Americans and foreigners alike — there are few sculptures in the world that are as impressive as the Shrine of Democracy.
While most of South Dakota’s economy is powered by agriculture, the Black Hills aren’t as conducive to farming. Mount Rushmore was originally designed to bring tourists to the area and boost the local economy. Beginning with a vision of carving Old West heroes into the granite spires of the Needles, South Dakota State Historian Doane Robinson drew the attention of talented sculptor Gutzon Borglum.
After much consideration and conversation, the project
was moved to Rushmore Mountain featuring four presidents representing the first 150 years of American History. Now, almost 80 years after its completion, it is one of the most popular national memorials in the country.
Shaping the Granite
Mount Rushmore is the perfect balance of art and engineering. Every inch of the faces was pulled out of the mountain using dynamite, drilled into shape and finally finished by hand.
16 SOUTHERN HILLS VACATION GUIDE
Jefferson is credited with bringing ice cream to the U.S. — you can sample his recipe at the Carvers’ Cafe.
There is a nightly lighting ceremony during summer months, including a patriotic video and flag folding.
Carver Gutzon Borglum died before his masterpiece was completed, but his son Lincoln made sure it was finished.
The process took 14 years and the hard work of over 400 men and women to complete.
Gutzon Borglum’s original design had the four presidents carved down to their torsos. A combination of unsuitable rock, lack of funding and the escalation of WWII caused the drilling to stop and for Borglum’s original design to be abbreviated (be sure to visit the Sculptor’s Studio at the memorial to see a model of the original design for yourself). In the fall of 1941,
the memorial was officially declared finished.
Planning Your Visit
After you park, make your way up the grand set of stairs to the Avenue of Flags. The flags of each state, territory or commonwealth are positioned in alphabetical order. Make sure to take a photo with your state or territory’s flag, and then head towards the amphitheater viewing deck (it’s quite the sight at sunset).
Don’t miss the evening Lighting Ceremony held
FUN FACTS:
Carvers had to climb 700 stairs to the top of the mountain to start their day.
President Jefferson was originally on Washington’s other side, but that rock wasn’t suitable for carving. Jefferson was blasted off the mountain and relocated.
Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln were chosen to represent our nation’s birth, growth, development and preservation, respectively.

nightly beginning the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30. Military members and veterans are invited on stage to participate in the flag-folding ceremony.
The Presidential Trail is a great way to get up close to the presidents if you’re ready for a short walk — just know there are 422 stairs involved.
Park rangers will be spread throughout the park; take advantage of their knowledge and join a walking tour! Kids can become Junior Rangers during their visit to Mount
Rushmore. Just grab a booklet at an information booth to get started. If your kids complete all of the challenges in the booklet, make sure they pick up a certificate from the Visitor Center to commemorate their achievement.
After you walk through all there is to see outside, visit the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, where you can see a 14 minute film about the creation of the mountain. You’ll be amazed as you venture through interactive exhibits and the short film in one of the theaters. You can even rent a multimedia
hand-held photo/video tour or an audio tour wand as you go through.
Before you leave, stop at the gift shop to pick up a memento. Then, grab a bite to eat at Carver’s Cafe. Enjoy a meal with a presidential view or simply a sweet treat of Thomas Jefferson ice cream — based on the first written recipe for the summertime dessert in the United States.
Over two million visitors each year make the trek to this iconic monument. Make sure to carve out some time during your trip to the Southern Hills. This is is a stop you won’t soon forget.

CARVING A DREAM
The Purpose
The Dream of Crazy Horse Memorial® began in 1939 when Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear asked sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to create a Memorial to pay tribute to American Indians. Standing Bear and others chose Lakota warrior Crazy Horse to be the subject.
In May of 1947, Korczak started the project with only $174. On June 3, 1948, a group of people gathered near Crazy Horse Mountain, previously known as Thunderhead Mountain, to
witness the first blast. In the early years, Korczak, his wife Ruth, and their ten children were responsible for Mountain progress and visitor center operations. In 1982, Korczak passed away, leaving Ruth and the children to continue the work. In 2014, Ruth passed away but had laid groundwork to ensure the Memorial was in good hands with Ziolkowski family members, a dedicated Board of Directors, and talented staff and management.

75 Years of the Dream
This is the year to visit Crazy Horse Memorial®. Your visit to the Southern Hills won’t be complete without a stop at the Memorial during
this monumental year of celebration.
June 3, 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the first blast on the Mountain. In that time, the largest Mountain Carving In Progress has come alive with Crazy Horse’s Face and much of his Left Hand and Arm.
In addition to regularly scheduled events, a celebration open to the public will take place June 4th, 2023. Please visit www.crazyhorse.org to start planning your visit!
More to Discover
The Carving is certainly the most visible aspect of Chief Standing Bear and Korczak’s Dream, but visitors are able to spend hours discovering the history and culture of the Native American while visiting the Memorial.
The Indian Museum of North America® is home to a large collection of art and artifacts that is sure to inspire and educate any visitor. And special performances can be enjoyed throughout the season, too, from a variety

of Indigenous cultures. The Museum, designed to complement the story being told in stone on the Mountain, presents the lives of American Indians and preserves Native Cultures for future generations.
The Museum collection was started with a single display donated in 1965 by Charles Eder, AssiniboineSioux, from Montana. That donation is still on display. Today, thousands of visitors and locals alike enjoy artisan displays, film showings in the theatres, and entertainment throughout the year. Make
sure to stop by Korczak’s Heritage, Inc. Gift Shop and purchase a memento to take home to remember your trip to the Memorial.
Once you’ve completed your tour through the displays of artwork, head outside to the viewing deck. Here, you can use the binoculars to watch carvers work on the Mountain. You can also study the full model here to envision the completed Memorial.
The Restaurant
If you’re in need of a hearty meal after your visit, don’t leave Crazy Horse
Memorial® without first stopping into Laughing Water Restaurant® . Enjoy local favorites like Native American Tacos or slow-cooked buffalo stew — both served on homemade fry bread.
The Dream of preserving and honoring the living heritage of the North America Indian began in 1948 and is being carried on today. You are a part of history in the making when you visit this beautiful place. Treasure the memories and make it part of your next Southern Hills adventure.

HOT ON THE TRAIL
Looking for a little exercise on your Southern Hills Vacation? You’ve come to the right place. The Southern Hills provides unlimited hiking, biking, camping, climbing and horseback riding opportunities — ranging from the gentle to the extreme.
The longest, yet most accessible trail, is the George S. Mickelson Trail, providing unmatched views of Black Hills scenery over its route between Edgemont and Deadwood. Gentle grades and surfacing make it ideal for hiking, biking and
horseback riding. Signage along the nearly 110-mile trail illustrates the trail’s environmental, railroad and historical significance.
From Rail to Trail
Gold was discovered in the Hills in the 1870s, and the railroad followed shortly after as a means for transporting mined materials. By 1930 almost all of the narrow gauge lines throughout the Black Hills were abandoned, due in large part to the closure of the majority of our mines. The remaining

While it took less than 1 year to build the railroad line in the early 1890s, it took more than 15 years to develop the George S. Mickelson Trail.
lines throughout the area were almost completely abandoned by the 1980s. Luckily, a conservancy group saw potential in our defunct railways, and with the backing of then-governor George S. Mickelson — who included the idea in his 1986 campaign — the project got off the ground.
The trail features hardrock tunnels, trestles, deep cuts and canyons, and seems to blend perfectly with the surrounding scenery. A rare combination of local, state and national groups, businesses, governmental
agencies and individuals joined forces to complete the entire trail in 1998.
Hitting the Trail
The Mickelson Trail is generally 10 feet wide with a crushed limestone and gravel surface. Services and conveniences are available at certain stops and communities along the route. Interpretative signage is located at numerous points. For much of its length the trail winds through the pines, native grasses, limestone formations and wildlife habitats of the Black
Hills National Forest. While cyclists are not required by law to wear helmets, the use of such protective headgear is recommended. Be mindful of traffic laws and of your responsibility as a cyclist.
Trail Passes can be purchased online or at self-service kiosks at each trailhead

LIVING WATERS
From mineral springs to recreational lakes, make Hot Springs the center of your wellness vacation. Whether it’s to relax at the lake around the campfire, decompress on a spectacular hike or discover boutique dining, Hot Springs is your destination.
No Black Hills community knows more about the rejuvenating power of water than Hot Springs.
Hot Springs was first settled in 1879, but was officially incorporated in 1890 when local entrepreneurs started building the entire town into a health spa destination. Fred T. Evans built his namesake Evans Plunge over a group of small springs, and by the next year visitors started disembarking by the hundreds in search of promises of renewal and vitality to be found in these warm, mineral-rich waters.
Springing to Life
The 87 degree water of Evans Plunge Mineral Springs was the original draw that brought crowds to the area when it opened in 1890, and it still offers family fun to this day; visitors have multiple pools, slides, and activities to choose from yearround. Evans Plunge is a great choice for families to enjoy the warm, healing waters of Hot Springs together.
Nearby Moccasin Springs’ pools are even warmer, ranging from 88 to 102 degrees, and much quieter than Evans Plunge. They have four pools, two large

Evans Plunge boasts 87 degree water, 4 slides, 2 kid pools, 2 hot tubs, a sauna and steam room.
Cascade Falls stays around 67 degrees all year—perfect growing conditions for stream orchids, one of only four native to South Dakota.
Cold Brook Lake produces Northern Pike longer than 40 inches. Not quite the Loch Ness, but still monsters!

wellness capital of the Black Hills, but for those looking for the thrill of adventure, Hot Springs is an excellent choice for your base camp. Several prime South Dakota lakes are within easy driving distance of town, including Angostura Reservoir, Hidden Lake Campground and Resort, Cold Brook Lake and Cottonwood
Springs Lake. Between them, you’ll find world-class fishing and bird-watching, not to mention some of the best sandy beaches in South Dakota. Discover ample hiking trails nearby— Wind Cave National Park alone boasts over 30 miles of trail. Check out Rankin Ridge Trail, which will take you to the highest

A Knack for Architecture
Revel in the outdoors to your heart’s content, and then come back for an architectural walking tour of Hot Springs.
In the late 1800s, there were 27 sandstone quarries in the Black Hills — one of which was owned by Hot Springs’ own Fred T. Evans. These quarries sourced Hot Springs with the materials for the many Richardsonian and Romanesque style buildings found throughout town; over 30 of them in all. Can you find them all?
HOT SPRINGS
MAMMOTH DISCOVERIES
In a steep-sided pond just outside of Hot Springs, warm water and plentiful vegetation drew mammoths and other ancient creatures to their doom. Hear this story and more by visiting the Mammoth Site. New discoveries happen every year at this active dig site, so there’s always something new to experience. And with an ever-expanding museum, the Ice Age comes alive for visitors. Be sure to check out the Junior Paleontologist dig programs; they’re a one-ofa-kind experience, but they fill up fast.
FIND NOURISHMENT
Exploring the history of Hot Springs is fascinating work — but it will build up an appetite. Refuel and take a break at one of our unique dining options, from pizza and local beer to fine dining worthy of celebrating special occasions.
For creatively crafted cuisine, Buffalo Dreamer at Moccasin Springs is a favorite, and showcases locally sourced delicacies sure to tantalize your taste buds.
COMMUNITIES 53
Hidden Lake Campground and Resort is the only resort in the Southern Black Hills that can boast its own private lake.
Angostura Reservoir is a waterlover’s haven and fishing paradise with over 36 miles of shoreline and water depths up to 75 feet.
Downtown’s Kidney Springs is thought to have healing properties; specifically for kidney-related illnesses.

STAY AND PLAY IN KEYSTONE
Mining was just the beginning for Keystone; we’ve built on our history to become your Black Hills destination for thrills and amusement.
Keystone is best known as the gateway to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, but this community nestled in the center of the Black Hills offers plenty to keep visitors entertained right in the heart of town. With an eclectic mix of shops, museums and outdoor attractions, there’s fun for everybody in the family.
The Presidential Treatment
Following the discovery of gold in nearby Battle Creek, a group of American and British stockholders
acquired more than 1,100 mining locations including the Keystone Mine, which spurred a new settlement in 1891. The discovery of a rich gold strike at the base of Mount Aetna in 1894 led to a mining boom that caused Keystone’s population to swell, aided by the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1900.
Tourism surpassed mining in 1927 when sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose nearby Mount Rushmore as the location for his monument to four American presidents, and Keystone

When Thomas C. Blair found gold, he named his claim “Keystone” after his home state of Pennsylvania.
Mining came to a halt when WWI broke out and closed any mines not producing war metals and materials.
Carrie and Mary Ingalls of “Little House on the Prairie” fame lived and died in Keystone.
Where Tourism Started in the Black Hills
When Keystone became the home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, it launched an entire industry of tourism. Now, this quaint town is a hub of activity for all ages.
has been a must-see destination ever since.
Mount Rushmore is just two miles away, but be sure to take a leisurely drive along Iron Mountain Road, with its famous “pigtail bridges,” for unique views of the Monument . Visit the memorial, but also learn the story behind it here in
town. You’ll learn about the mountain and the process that made it happen.
The Borglum Historical Center honors the famed sculptor with multiple interactive films and exhibits. If four presidents barely whet your appetite, the National Presidential Wax Museum depicts lifelike
recreations and includes a self-guided audio tour.
Play & Stay in Keystone
There are plenty of familyfriendly attractions located in town. Sky-high adventure awaits as you zipline through the pines, race a mountain coaster through exhilarating twists and turns and tackle

a challenging aerial maze. Prefer a more grounded experience? Take a seat for a ride on the 1880 Train to Hill City, or go deeper with a guided cave tour.
Be sure to check out oneof-a-kind shops offering everything from healing rocks to homemade sweets. Don’t forget to grab a memento to remember your trip from one of the souvenir shops along the boardwalk or specialty and antique stores downtown.
No matter what draws you in during your stay in Keystone, we’ll make sure your vacation is memorable and full of Black Hills fun.

This historic gold mine was founded by two German immigrants in 1882.
Mining operations ceased in 1910, but the mine was revitalized 65 years ago to entertain and educate visitors to the Black Hills with historic gold sluicing and panning experiences and much more.
Big Thunder Gold Mine will be celebrating this anniversary on June 1 -10 this year. Join the celebration with discounts on food, espresso, and admission.
GOLD!
Two forms of gold found around Keystone.
Placer gold is residual flakes or nuggets found by panning in river beds. This form was first discovered two miles east of town and is abundant in the area, but the depth of deposits make placer gold impractical to extract.
Lode gold forms in veins within the earth’s surface and is more profitable because of larger deposit sizes. However, the use of explosives and risk of tunnels caving in makes it dangerous to obtain.
COMMUNITIES 69
Big Thunder Gold Mine wasn’t the most prolific in town, but it was the safest.
Nearby Needles Highway took an estimated 150,000 pounds of dynamite to construct.
The faces on Mount Rushmore are 60 feet tall — including 20-foot-tall noses and 18-foot-wide mouths!

DISCOVERY AND ADVENTURE
Custer’s rich history goes hand-in-hand with the discovery of gold. But there’s more treasure to be found in this pristine community.
Let Custer be your launchpad to adventure and discovery. Immerse yourself in the history of our community and be swept away by the sights and sounds of the area. Custer can be a treat for your sense of taste, too. Make sure to check out the variety of flavors that our locals are serving up. We’d also like to invite you to our 100th annual Gold Discovery Days Celebration. We hope you can join us!
100 Years of Discovery Custer’s history is steeped in the history of the Gold Rush.
2023 marks 100 years of the community coming together to celebrate the discovery of gold near the town in 1874. On July 21-23 the community of Custer will celebrate the occasion with a carnival, a car show, one of the largest parades in the Black Hills and so much more. Mark your calendars for the 100th annual Gold Discovery Days Celebration. You won’t want to miss it.

From one of the best burgers you’ll ever taste, to an elevated fine dining experience, you’ll be sure to find whatever you’re craving.
We’re also the home to Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company. Make sure to sample some of these suds while visiting.

THROUGH THE AIR
The majesty of the Black Hills — and especially the granite formations that surround Custer — is only amplified when seen from the air. Hop in a helicopter and get ready to see the outdoors from a breathtaking new perspective. Cruise past Mount Rushmore and wave at the presidents, or get up close and personal with Crazy Horse; this aerial adventure won’t disappoint!
Prefer to experience nature at a more leisurely pace? The Black Hills has a long history with hot air balloons, and there is no experience quite like floating in a wicker basket. Drift along and catch the currents at daybreak to see the beauty surrounding Custer on all sides.
Regardless of your preferred mode of exploration, we’re excited to host you while you explore. Custer is the best base for your adventures from all perspectives; whether they be on land, in the water or through the air.

Big Rock Park in Custer covers 73 acres — including Pageant Hill and the Custer Skywalk trail. It rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views.
In January, Custer hosts the Bark Beetle Blues. It’s a homage to the blue tint in wood eaten by the bug, but also to the devastation it’s wrought on nearby forests.

FOODIE PARADISE
There’s a quiet battle raging for who has the best burger in the Black Hills, but we challenge you to discover your own favorite dish. Whether it’s burgers, Native American tacos or our unofficial state food chislic, you won’t go hungry.
Many places have gluten-free and vegetarian options if you ask. Also, look for locally sourced produce for fresh eats!
While they’re technically bison, some menus will list this land mammal as buffalo. Either way, it’s a unique flavor you shouldn’t miss.
Wondering where to find your next favorite meal? Turn to page 98 to see what’s popular near you!

Chislic
You might be wondering what, exactly, chislic is. If you’ve never heard of it that’s alright; it is a dish rarely found outside of South Dakota. It’s thought to have immigrated here with the Germans from Russia. While recipes may vary, it is generally cubed red meat that is marinated and grilled or fried. Sometimes it’s served on a skewer or toothpicks, usually just in a basket with fries. It’s a regional delicacy that you shouldn’t miss.
Fry Bread
Better than a tortilla and versatile enough to be both savory and sweet; fry bread is a Native American staple you’ll find throughout the Southern Hills. Most are made simply from water, flour and salt and then fried. Some variations use lard or milk as well. The most popular fry bread on menus are Native American tacos served with ground bison or other game meat rather than beef. Another traditional fare you should keep an eye out
for is Wojapi, or a simple berry sauce used for dipping. Chokecherries are the most common, but any berry can be used, and the sauce is generally served alongside fry bread. Both Wojapi and Native American tacos are found locally, especially at Crazy Horse Memorial® and at powwows or other cultural events.
Local Game
Speaking of bison, if you’ve never tried it, you are in for a treat. The ubiquitous land mammal symbolizes our area

SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT
The Southern Hills are the home of several delightful and unique dessert creations. No matter what your sweet tooth is craving, the food wizards in Keystone, Custer, Hot Springs or Hill City will be able to satisfy your dessert dreams.
Step into one of the ice cream shops and discover flavor combinations that you wouldn’t have imagined. If you’re searching for a homestyle approach to dessert, grab a slice of pie in Custer. And you can’t leave the Southern Hills without trying one of the signature desserts crafted at the Alpine Inn in Hill City — come for the dinner stay for the dessert!
96 FOOD AND DRINK
and has infiltrated our cuisine in a big way.
The most popular use of bison is in place of any recipe that uses beef: tacos, burgers, even the occasional pizza. Bison steaks are also common and a great way to let the true flavor of the meat take center stage. When ordering bison, it’s best to request medium-rare if it suits your palate. Game meat tends to dry out more than beef due to its lean nature. While land mammals tend to steal the show, the Southern Hills are also home
to several lakes, and fishing is a popular pastime here. Even if you don’t have time to catch one, keep an eye out for walleye on menus. As our state fish, you’ll find many locals have almost a reverence for it; which means it’s served in a way that lets the flavor shine.
Kuchen
As the official state dessert of South Dakota, the only thing as varied as the flavors of kuchen is its pronunciation. Even locals who have eaten it all their life
will disagree on how to say it. Some will say “koo-ghen,” others insist “kuh-tchen,” but we all agree to call it delicious. It is historically a European dessert that immigrated to our state in the late 1800s.
History and semantics
aside, there’s no denying the staying power of this tasty dessert. Kuchen is a sort of fruit pie, made from sweet dough and a custard filling. Berries are a popular addition to the filling, but apple and rhubarb are also favorite flavors for locals.
FOOD AND DRINK 97
August is Hill City’s time to shine, when they host a weekend festival dedicated to top-notch BBQ, local beer and wine, and live music.
Want an Old West dinner experience? Look for chuck-wagon dinners, where you’ll enjoy wagon rides, music shows and steaks grilled over a campfire.
FOOD & DRINK
Visit the Southern Hills in February to catch Custer’s annual Restaurant Week, where local chefs showcase exciting new dishes.

THE PERFECT PAIRING
The flavors of the Southern Hills come alive! Discover your new favorite craft beer or lovingly produced wine at a brewery or winery here in the Southern Hills.
You’ve heard of a dine and dash, but did you know leaving a saloon without paying is called a shoot the crow?
Live music is a staple of our breweries and wineries. You can find an artist or group performing almost every night in the summer.
Commercial wineries weren’t legal in South Dakota until 1996. Now, we have over 30 around the state — including 4 in the Southern Hills.
100 FOOD AND DRINK
While you’re out finding adventure in the Southern Hills, you might find yourself a bit parched. Our breweries and wineries will fix you right up; whether you want something light and refreshing or deep and flavorful. Most of them also have food, patios, and lawn games that ensure stopping for a beverage will entertain the entire family.
Breweries
From standard pilsners artfully executed to curious concoctions that will tease
your palate, our breweries always have something new to share. Not sure where to start? Each brewery has their own flagship brews that got them started. Most are more than happy to share what makes it great or give you a personal recommendation.
Craft beer has become increasingly popular in the past decade, and the Southern Hills has been home to great brews from the start. What makes ours different is the brewers’ focus on locally sourced ingredients. From hops grown on a nearby
farm to carefully tended beehives, our brewers know that the beautiful Black Hills are a bountiful source of exceptional flavors.
Wineries
While South Dakota’s economy is driven by agriculture, there are actually few grape varieties that do well here. Luckily, that doesn’t stop our wineries from producing unique, awardwinning wines year after year.
Many of our original settlers were experienced in winemaking, and in true

KID AND FIDO FRIENDLY
Since many breweries and wineries also offer food, kids and family under legal drinking age are allowed. Some even cater to younger guests by offering sodas and other hand-crafted non-alcoholic beverages. On top of that, you’ll find inviting lawns and yard games everyone can enjoy.
A growing number of establishments in the Southern Hills also welcome your favorite furry friend. Most will require your dog to remain leashed while on the premises and expect the common courtesy of cleaning up after them. Make sure you call ahead or check individual businesses’ websites, as policies may change.
pioneer fashion, they brought what they knew and adapted it to prairie living. This is why you’ll find wines around the Southern Hills made from what we call prairie berries. These berries are essentially any fruit found on plants native to the prairie, and they produce wine with a distinct character you won’t find anywhere else.
Best of Both Worlds
As drinking tastes change, our breweries and wineries adapt. If you love a crisp, bubbly seltzer, you’re in luck!
Several businesses offer them alongside their other taps and bottles. You can find ciders, meads and nonalcoholic offerings on menus as well.
You’ll see some breweries are situated right next door to wineries and vice versa. Some businesses have expanded their expertise from one craft into another over the years. This means you’ll be able to find both beer and wine in some places, or you can try both by walking a short distance between establishments.
FOOD AND DRINK 103
Many breweries use locally sourced ingredients — watch for honey, lavender or juniper beers, as they are commonly foraged ingredients.
It’s a family affair: several of our wine and beer makers have been crafting tasty beverages for generations, and their expertise shows!
FOOD & DRINK
Firehouse is the oldest operating brewery in South Dakota, and they offer craft beer, award-winning wine and now camping and lodging!
ROUGHING IT ... OR NOT
Where you lay your head at night is just as important as where you’re exploring next. We have every style of accommodation you could want — because your lodging should be as exceptional as your Southern Hills adventures.
Bringing your four-legged family members? You’ll find lodging that accommodates dogs, cats, even horses!
When you stay in the Southern Hills, you’re in good company. We’ve hosted movie stars and sitting presidents — all we need is you!
Want the outdoor experience minus the ruggedness? Check out our glamping options; you’ll be sleeping under the stars in style
104 LODGING
However you’ve arrived, whether by plane or road trip, the last thing you will want to do is drive farther than you have to before settling in. Stay centric to all the Black Hills has to offer by booking at one of the lodging options in the Southern Hills.
Comfort in Familiarity
Throughout the Southern Hills, you can find all the brand name hotels that you know and trust. You’ll find the usual amenities like continental breakfast and swimming pools, but
also a decidedly Black Hills aesthetic. Many hotels have added rustic decor in their lobbies and rooms. We also have plenty of family-owned hotels and motels we encourage you to check out. You’ll find smaller properties, which means fewer crowds, but the same level of amenities with a homey touch. Some are owned by families who have lived here in the Southern Hills their entire lives, and they’re more than happy to give you the inside scoop on their favorite things to do.
Cabins, Rentals, B&Bs
A great option if you’re traveling with a large group or extended family is to rent a cabin or ranch house for your stay. You’ll have the entire place to yourself, which in some cases means your own personal patch of wilderness. We have cabins that fit a small family of four to large gatherings of over 20!
Looking for a homey feel that comes with stellar food? Look no further than our bed and breakfasts. They’ll welcome you in and treat you like family — and feed you

LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS
If you want to camp while you’re here, we ask that you respect the beautiful wilderness by keeping it wild. Make sure when you set up camp you disturb as little of the surrounding nature as possible. Keep a clean camp and don’t leave trash or food lying around.
Some areas allow campfires, but please check with wherever you’re staying for current restrictions. Our forest has been ravaged by past wildfires that could have been prevented with proper precautions.
106 LODGING
like one too! You’re certain to find amenable lodging with equally agreeable hosts. One of the newest trends in lodging has also arrived in the Southern Hills: glamping. If you want to spend time immersed in nature with nothing but canvas between you and the outdoors, these rentals will be right up your alley. Enjoy all the conveniences of a cabin, but with less structure. You can find several around the Southern Hills, but act fast — because of their popularity, they sell out quickly.
Motoring for Fun
Load up the RV, pack up the travel trailer, or gas up the motorhome. The Southern Hills are calling to all those road warriors and nomads who find a homebase in their RV. If you’re looking for a place to park your rig, discover what so many RVers already know about the Southern Hills — that RVs are welcomed here in a big way.
Want to go for the unplugged experience? Book a site at one of the National Forest campgrounds. Fishing, boating and other watery
fun could be just a few steps outside the door of your RV — not to mention the hiking and the views.
Maybe you want to take advantage of all of the whistles and bells in your mobile castle. Check out some of the less rustic motorhome experiences that some of the private campgrounds offer. Full hookups, pull through spots, cable access, internet access, pools, fire pits, and other fabulous RV amenities can be found throughout the Southern Hills.
LODGING 107
Some hotels and resorts are close to our pristine lakes and offer water sport rentals for you to enjoy during your stay.
Camping in the hills away from developed fee sites is known as “dispersed camping.” Camp for free for 14 days, but stay 1/2 mile away from other sites.

One with Nature
The first question to ask when considering camping in the Southern Hills is what are you bringing with you? Maybe you or your family are not the type who brings the comforts of home on the road with a fully stocked RV. Maybe you’re searching for a more rugged experience. Maybe you’re more of a carryin-all-of-your-own-gear sort of group.
If a camping experience is what you seek, we have plenty of variety to suit
every taste, both in location and amenities. You can find campgrounds with tent areas and hike-in spots all throughout the Southern Hills. And within the Black Hills National Forest, you can camp almost anywhere you can pitch a tent — just make sure to get your permit first.
And if you’ve forgotten, lost or broken any necessary piece of camping equipment, the Southern Hills are dotted with adventure outfitters who would be more than happy to help you come up
with a solution to whatever camping dilemma may crop up during your stay.
The Southern Hills truly capture the wonder and beauty of the Black Hills — from ponderosa-covered peaks to softly rolling prairies and lake shores. No matter what type of stay you are looking for — whether you’re looking to get pampered or if you’re wanting to really rough it — we welcome you to hang your hat up in our communities and relax with us during your trip.
