Robert Allerton (1873-1964), was born the son and sole heir of First National Bank founder, Samuel Allerton. In 1960, Allerton formally adopted as his son, life partner and companion, John Gregg Allerton. Allerton and Gregg traveled the world collecting art and statuary which they placed on their 5,000 acre estate near Monticello, Illinois, dubbed “The Farm. Through the years, many of the statues have been removed due to threat of theft and vandalism, but some remain on view in what is now called Allerton Park, which was generously donated in 1946 by Robert Allerton to the University of Illinois.
