GAY COUPLES WANTED FOR NEW TV SHOW

Channel 4 is looking for same sex couples to take part in a brand new wedding series, Wedding House. The programme is going to take the hassle out of getting hitched by opening a one-stop wedding shop for couples looking to get married. Unlike the average wedding, which now costs around £20k, couples at Wedding House will have all the stress and worry of the big day removed from their shoulders as a stylist, planner and team of experts use their creativity, resourcefulness and amazing skills to make their dreams come true. G-A-Y TO ABOLISH DOOR CHARGES

QUEER AS TALENT IS BACK

The ground-breaking, national talent competition, Queer As Talent, is hitting cities across the country for another explosive season. And 2010 promises to be even bigger. With huge media interest, major record labels vying for front-row seats and a new-look audition process taking place in venues around the UK, the search for the next gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender superstar is about to reach feverish new levels. Auditions start on 12 May in London before heading to other cities around England, Wales and Ireland. The Grand Finale, where the winner will perform in front of celebrity judges and a huge crowd to win £ 10,000, plus major recording opportunities, will take place in the capital in August. WORLD LANDMARK LEGAL RULING ALLOWS GAYS TO MARRY Same-sex partners have been married in Mexico for the first time. Five gay couples were officially married by the head of Mexico City’s registry department in the City Hall to cheers from family and friends. Mexico becomes the first country in South America to legalise gay marriages. It’s still only in the liberal capital that gay people are allowed to marry though; outside the city’s confines it is still outlawed. Clergymen and even the President have denounced the change in the law and said it’s a “threat to family life and values.”

NEWSPAPER SUBSCRIPTIONS FALL AFTER GAY KISS PHOTO The Washington Post newspaper says more than two dozen people cancelled their subscriptions over a photo of two men kissing that ran on the front page. The photo was taken last month, the first day same-sex couples could apply for marriage licenses in Washington. The paper’s ombudsman, Andrew Alexander, reports that 27 subscribers cancelled their subscriptions, specifically citing the photo. He wrote that while complaints usually subside quickly, in this case, complaints lasted about a week .

Michael Black and John Morgan, who were turned away from a B & B in Berkshire for being gay, say they have been touched by the support they’ve received, following their complaint to the police. Speaking to the BBC, Black said: “It’s been touching that we’ve had offers from complete strangers, who don’t know us. It shows they feel strongly that what’s happened to us is wrong, and that’s terrific. What we want to achieve is for the owners of B&Bs to be aware that they are not above the law, and that there’s a law that bans discrimination.”

MALAWI COUPLE STILL BEHIND BARS, AWAITING TRIAL

A gay couple in Malawi who are in prison for “gross indecency” –i.e being homosexual – have been told they will have to wait several more weeks for a full trial to take place. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, have already spent more than three months behind bars since their arrest in December for holding an engagement party. If convicted the couple could spend up to 14 years in prison. The trial is being viewed as an important test case for gay rights in the African country.

NEWS DUTCH SOLDIERS WANT TO SUE FORMER NATO COMMANDE A group of former Dutch soldiers, calling themselves the Pink Army, is to sue an American military general and former NATO commander who blames the Srebrenica massacre on homosexual soldiers from the Dutch army. John Sheeham said poor morale caused by having gay soldiers in the team contributed to the massacre which took place in 1995. Peter Schouten from the Pink Army said “Sheehan’s comment dishonours and cheapens the sacrifice that brave gay men and women have made in military service to the Netherlands. They are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice every day and this should not be smeared with such a lie.”

ANTI HOMOPHOBIA LAW IS GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT Encouraging any form of homophobia or gay hatred is now a criminal act in England and Wales. A new law, which came into effect last month, now gives stirring up homophobia the same level of criminality as inciting religious or racial hatred. However, the laws against evoking racial slurs have only ever been used 20 times in three decades so critics have said it’s a ‘useless law.’ Several religious leaders have condemned the legislation. On the other hand, Stonewall’s Ben Summerskill said it will “go some way towards addressing hatred at a time when attacks are on the increase.”

FUNDAMENTALIST CHURCH GOERS VS FAMILY OF MILITARY WAR DEAD

The U.S Supreme Court is to decide whether constitutional free-speech rights protect anti-gay protestors from prosecution. The funeral for Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder drew picketing by members of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. Pastor Fred Phelps and other church members have protested at several funerals of U.S. military members killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, claiming God is punishing America for its tolerance of gays and lesbians. The high court has agreed to consider whether the protesters’ message and picketing was protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

GAY COUPLE REFUSED MEMBERSHIP AT YMCA

A gay couple were refused the family rate of membership at the YMCA, being told: “The rate is only for a husband and wife who are legally married according to state law or those who file joint tax returns.” Mark Maxwell and his partner, Timothy Young, were turned down when they applied to join the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, the only metropolitan YMCA in the state that doesn’t allow same-sex couples to get family memberships. The couple, who are preparing to adopt their third child, say they feel “disappointed by the YMCA” and that they hope the review, which is currently underway, will change the policy.

GAY MARRIAGE TO BE ANNULLED

A judge has ordered the marriage between two men in Buenos Aires to be cancelled. The marriage, only the second ever same-sex civil partnership in Argentina, has been annulled as it is considered to be a “violation of the Civil Code.” Judge Felix Igarzabal demands the couple, Damian Bernath, 39, and Jorge Salazar Capon, 43, must return the marriage certificate and the Family Book, something they are refusing to do until the matter is resolved in another court.

Tour or no tour, make sure you get a ticket to see a movie at the lavish art deco Castro Theater (429 Castro St.) Naturally, the Castro has the obligatory Starbucks (known as ‘Daddy Starbucks’ for the butch crowd that goes there) but the locals are more likely to head to The Castro Cheesery(427 Castro St.) for their caffeine boost or Spike’s Coffee & Teas(4117 19th St.), with its flirteous baristas. Diners like Orphan Andy’s(3991 17th St) and Welcome Home(464 Castro St.) are landmark eateries, having occupied the same premises for decades and probably offering the same ‘down home’ dishes that Harvey Milk would have eaten. If you want to escape the comfort food of the diners, head to the reasonably priced Côte Sud(4238 18th St.) which has all the quaintness of a home on the French

for its plentiful hotels, department stores, boutiques and theatres. The Powell & Hyde cable car is the steepest, reaching a scary 21-degree gradient between Lombard and Chestnut streets. The oldest route, the California line, climbs Nob Hill clunking past the city’s poshest hotels and the mansions of the 19th century industrialists. The views across the city are worth the trip up. The area of Haight-Ashbury, two miles west of downtown San Francisco, is one of the most photographed. The eight blocks of Victorian buildings became the epi-centre of flower power cool in the 60s and retains a myriad of chilled-out cafés and second hand bookstores. And lots of beggars.

In this month’s Personal Voices, we find out what makes two of the most-respected gay filmmakers tick. Britain’s Carl Medland and New Zealand’s Christopher Banks share what’s behind their inspiration and what they want to achieve from their latest films.

Meet Carl Medland,

a gay London-based film director whose film The Cost of Love is currently on the international film festival circuit Since I was a child I have been passionate about films and plays and would often make my friends and family members get involved with my growing hobby. I’d hire cameras and start directing them in short films. But it wasn’t until I moved up to London (I grew up in Devon) that I was really able to fulfil this passion properly in a professional way. After getting my uni degree I set up my own theatre company and then moved across into film. About 50 percent of my time is spent creating corporate films but I really want to get more involved with feature films. I’ve done about 20 short films and won some awards - last year I got a Best Music Video award. Even though it’s great to be recognised in this way, I make films for the love of it, and to tell a story, not solely to win prizes. The Cost of Love is my first feature film. Everyone kept telling me I should make a full-length film, and with it being my first one, I thought it would be good to have the local community’s support, so I made a film located in, and based around, Greenwich. The people of the area have been fantastic, which has been very touching.

It’s an accurate portrayal

so there are parts full of drama & parts full of comedy The film’s story takes place in Greenwich where you delve into the characters’ past lives over four days. The main character is played by the very talented Christopher Kelham. You’ll also love Michael Joyce, whose alter ego, Estee Applauder, was one of the most recognisable and best-loved people on the scene. Tragically, Michael died in a car crash just months after we finished filming. He was a true professional and a great friend. Everyone involved in The Cost of Love was devastated by the news. It was heartbreaking. It was really important for me to make a film that properly captures what’s happening in Britain’s gay community today. There are quite a few American films, but not many from our own shores and I thought it’s vital we show what’s actually happening right here, especially with the increase in homophobic attacks recently. As it’s an accurate portrayal of gay life, needless to say, there are parts full of drama and also parts full of comedy!

I partly financed the film myself, which many have described as ‘brave.’ I don’t really think it was brave as I really believed in the project from day one. Also, we had a great crew, actors who were pulling out all the stops, and we used good cameras and lighting. All of this gave me additional confidence that it was going to work.

writer and director whose film, Teddy – A Story of Two Men and a Bear, is receiving international acclaim I was chatting with my producer and we thought we would like to make a series of short films that focused solely one emotion per film. I was suffering from depression and so regret seemed to come about naturally as the first emotion we should tackle. Teddy highlights the regret of having lost someone and the hope you can get back by trying to make amends…and of course, the despair because going back in time to fix problems is often very painful. The film’s about a guy called Tony, from London, who receives an invitation from his ex, Neil who left him to live in New Zealand several years ago, to join him over there for a holiday. Tony has never really been able to get over their relationship, or let go of the teddy bear they used to share, and so he flies to New Zealand to see Neil. The problem is, Neil has a new partner, Phil, and Teddy is part of their new home. Out of all the characters in the film, I probably most closely identify with Tony. He’s quite neurotic and he comes across as awkward a lot of the time. I felt like that a lot when I was growing up, although I do have more confidence nowadays, I think those anxiety issues that Tony has are never too far away from me. As a writer, it’s very rewarding seeing the work you created on a page, come to life with full characters and story, on film. I view the whole film-making process as an extension of the writing process. When it is all filmed, edited and put together it’s hard to imagine it was once all different bits and pieces that you’d created and tied-in together. Even after so many years working in the industry, as an independent filmmaker it is still quite hard to find financial backing, so I have financed Teddy myself and have also put my own money into the next project I’m working on too. I guess it shows I’m dedicated to what I’m working on. I hope one day it will become easier for us independent guys to get funding. We’ve taken the film to several film festivals including Toronto and San Francisco and I’ve been very pleased with how audiences have responded to Teddy. It’s always interesting to watch the reaction, and it has been positive across the board. Some people have said they were really moved by the story and this made me feel it was all worthwhile.

A concept album chronicling the relationship between former First Lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, and one particular life-long servant the album boasts guest vocals from the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos and Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine fame). Includes a DVD of music videos for songs featured on the album as well as a hundred page book.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT | ALL DAYS ARE NIGHTS: SONGS FOR LULUU ‘Canadian-American Rufus Wainwright has built up a loyal fan base over his career, all of which will need no persuading to add this his sixth studio album to their music collections. SCREENBURN DVD | Queer AsTalent : Season One Finale After all the blood, sweat and tears, the QAT judges finally whittled all those talented kids down to 11, and put on a spectacular show, and here is the proof as captured by TV Polari. Hosted by Penny TV regular, Gabbi, and Graeme Austin, on this DVD you get access to behind the scene interviews, as well as all the dramas on stage. The show takes in every type of performance possibe from dance, to show tunes to pop and opera. One contestant manages to divide the judges, and one manages to get a standing ovation. Considering this was the QAT team’s first venture, it’s fantastic to see tall the the contestants hard work pay off, and only bodes well for season two starting in May.

CINEMA | ALICE IN WONDERLAND 3D OK, now every review I have read has quoted this, but Wonderland truly is a fantasy-scape that seems written for Tim Burton. Once again, teaming with his now de-riguer actor of choice Johnny Depp, and returning to his original helm with Disney. This is not a retelling of Alice’s adventures, but a sequel to both the original Lewis Carrol “Alice” novels, and sees the heroine this time being proposed to by an English buffoon, only to fall into Wonderland, before finding her womanhood/slaying the Jaberwocky (a shamefully underused voice over from Christopher Lee). Giving Alice her goals give’s the movie a trajectory in which one can invest in a character arch normally absent from wonderland adaptions. Newcomer Mia Wasikowska is a blessing, but the older English character actors and voiced CG characters do manage to upstage her, with Johnny Depp’s schizophrenic Mad Hatter managing to steal the show altogether. Whilst it is pleasant to look at (yes, the 3D is visually stunning), it still feels like you have had a Big Mac. Very tasty, but somewhat not very filling.

CINEMA | SHUTTER ISLAND When a detective is called to Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of an inmate at the resident loony bin, everyone seems to be hiding the truth from him as to her whereabouts. Clues and characters are there to keep you guessing, along with plot points involving Nazi torture, ghosts, a fortress building with dozens of psycho’s. Martin Scorsese’s fourth film with Leonardo DiCaprio, sees the director fully in his stride – developing his technique and riffing on past auteur motifs such as Hitchcock, Ford, and Kuber, to deliver a film that both unsettles and leaves the audience in suspense. Ben Kingsley gives a very naturalistic understated performance – that manages to unsettle and sooth, leaving you never sure as to whether he is a good doctor or bad. Whilst the much-hyped twist can almost be guessed, Scorsese still manages to pull the rug out from under your feet, and leave you wanting to go back and watch this film again.

DVD | NEWCASTLE With its stunning location, beautiful cinematography and hot boys, Newcastle is a colourful movie that will awaken all of your senses. Jesse is the town’s latest up and coming surfing star, who’s a big a hit with the girls, and Victor, his older brother, demands he compete and win at Newcastle’s annual surfing competition. Their younger, and perhaps more sensitive brother, Fergus, has a major crush on one of Jesse’s cool surfer mates. When the brothers and their friends go on a camping trip, unexpected problems force the young men to tackle life-changing and life-affirming decisions. HIV & News A Crazy Situation Robert Fieldhouse

In the past year, two major surveys of people living with HIV - one in the US and the other in the UK- have shown the same thing; people with HIV are not getting the mental health services they desperately need. The American Psychological Association teamed up with NAPWA (US National Association of People with AIDS), online resource aidsmeds. com and POZ magazine to poll just over 2,000 people with HIV in the USA. At around the same, Sigma Research www.sigmaresearch.org.uk, the UK’s leading research group on HIV, published findings from its 20072008 survey What do you Need? It captured the views and experiences of 1,777 people with HIV in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In the US, the hope is that the results of the survey will seed educational programmes for people with HIV and healthcare providers, and will be used to convince the US congress that mental health services should be funded as part of HIV prevention and treatment services. There is absolute inequity across the UK to accessing HIV-related psychiatric and psychological support, lobbying to establish some minimum standard of care to ensure that the growing (and ageing) positive population in the UK have access to adequate mental health support is at an early stage.

The US picture In the US, only 4 percent of survey respondents said they had NOT experienced psychological symptoms such as depression or anxiety since being diagnosed HIV positive. Whilst three quarters of people experiencing mental health problems had told their HIV doc, only 2 out of 3 had been referred to a mental health specialist. A startling 89 percent of US respondents said they had experienced some degree of depression since their HIV diagnosis. Seventy-eight percent reported having felt anxious, afraid or consistently worried about the future, and 65 percent reported problems with thinking and memory. Sixty-seven percent said they’d had trouble coping with their HIV diagnosis. Thirty two percent said they’d felt unsafe in their homes or relationships. Six percent of people felt too embarrassed to tell their health care provider, and another 6 percent feared being judged. Of the 1,500 people who were bold enough to raise the issue with their health care provider, nearly 28 percent were not referred to a mental health specialist. Unfortunately, of those who saw a professional for their problems, 30 percent said they were not satisfied with the care they received. Of those who weren’t satisfied, many said their mental health care provider had no experience dealing with HIV or did not understand their situation. The UK picture Of the 1,777 HIV positive respondents in the What do you Need survey, seven out of ten reported

having problems in the past year with anxiety and depression, self-esteem and self-confidence, sex and sleeping. Counselling or psychology services had been used by just 44% of the respondents to the UK survey with anxiety or depression who had received any help. A little over one third reported using the HIV clinic to deal with these issues. Friends were the main source of support for 40 percent of respondents. By contrast, only one third of respondents who reported mental health problems had spoken to their GP about it. The survey showed that over half the people who had experienced problems with self confidence, anxiety and depression had not received any help at all. What’s more, three-quarters of those having problems with sex, or alcohol and drugs received no help. Sex Thirty-eight percent of UK r espondents with a current regular partner were unhappy about their relationship, with 40% having experienced problems in the last year. Alcohol and or drugs Twenty seven percent of all respondents had experienced problems with alcohol and/or drugs in the past year. Nineteen percent of all respondents reported problems with alcohol and/ or other drugs in the past 12 months and had not received any help to address these problems. For 40 percent drug and alcohol problems had worsened in the past

HIV & News year. Overall three quarters of people with alcohol and or drug problems had not received any help. Depression and anxiety Seventy two percent of all respondents reported problems with anxiety or depression in the past year. Two thirds had received help with these problems but one third had not. Overall 23 percent of respondents had experienced problems with anxiety and depression and had not had any help to address them. People had ideas about the kinds of support they needed to combat anxiety and depression. These included access to free counselling and psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, life coaching, couples counselling, debt management counselling and community psychiatric nurses. Many respondents wanted healthcare professionals to be more sensitive to complaints about the side effects of certain drugs. Some requested easier access to antidepressants and complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy and meditation. Moving forward Taken together, these surveys clearly show high levels of need for a range of mental health support services among people with HIV. As people living with HIV we should, as much as possible to be in control of our own healthcare. We should not solely rely on our doctors raising the issue of our mental well -being as many will not do it. Seek advice from your local support group about getting the most from your clinic appointments. Jonathan, a BASELINE reader told us, “I’ve been living with depression on and off for years but have never said anything to my consultant because the 10 minutes I get just

twice a year just isn’t long enough for me to discuss my personal problems.” Veronica Oakeshott, Policy Advisor to the UK All Party Parliamentary Group on AIDS, told Baseline, ““The APPG is aware of the importance of good mental health for people living with HIV. We are collaborating with organisations such as NAT who are studying what can be done to i mprove access to quality services. We stand ready to press for sensible solutions, backed by the personal experience of people living with HIV.” Roy Brazington, a specialist HIV and mental health nurse at the Maudsley Hospital in London told BASELINE; “currently we are seeing clients with a number of different problems that include depression, anxiety, adjustment problems, substance misuse issues and an increasing number with severe and enduring mental health problems. We also see a significant number of people who are socially excluded primarily due to their immigration status and who present low in mood.” Flick Thorley, an HIV and mental health specialist nurse at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is not surprised by the low proportion of people in the UK reporting having seeked help from their GP; “People living with HIV who experience mental health problems will frequently not feel safe to talk to their GP or the GP won’t have time. People with HIV do not meet the criteria for input from community mental health teams as they do not conform to the ‘Severe and Enduring’ spectrum of mental illness such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar Affective Disorders.” So what makes HIV specific mental health services so vital? Thorley tells us “As part of Liaison Psychiatry they are not bound by postcoded healthcare as most of psychiatry is.”

Brazington tells us, “the nursing staff within the team at the Maudsley is in a unique position in that we can be very flexible in where we see clients such as their treatment centre, at their GP practice, or in their home. This flexible approach to care ensures that we are better able to meet the clients needs.” So why is it so important that people living with HIV get specialist advice? Thorley explains “Health professionals providing psychological and psychiatric care for people experiencing HIV-related mental health difficulties need a good understanding of HIV disease and disease progression including a thorough knowledge of opportunistic infections and CNS (central nervous system) side effects,” Thorley adds “They also need to understand the potential complex drug interactions between HAART and psychotropic medicine and keep up-to-date with the frequent changes in HIV treatment.” Thorley believes there should be a minimum standard of care for positive people with mental health problems and there should be easily accessible, approachable, educated and understanding mental health services available for everybody. “HIV clinic nurses are good people to approach as a starting point if anyone has concerns about their mental health.” The last word to Brazington, “HIV treatment may have improved the lives of people living with HIV in a number of ways however mental health problems remain as people are living longer and meeting different challenges in their lives. Unfortunately, the stigma of the illness has not gone away.” This article first appeared in Baseline Magazine. SYLVIA TOSUN Lord of the Flying… I have been preparing for our record label event for the Winter Music Conference in Miami to painstaking detail lately. In fact, trying to manage such a thing from NYC when the party is in Miami has been a daunting experience, so I decided to book a quick flight last weekend just to suss things out. Well, I almost didn’t make it down there alive! We were on the runway taking off, already starting to catch the air when, all of a sudden, we slammed back down onto the runway! The plane’s nose ring fell off! In a mad panic, the passengers became like the kids in “Lord of The Flies”, jumping from their seats while yelling at the Captain and crew members… I’m not one to panic in these type of situations, so I was alarmingly calm, so much so, that the lady next to me put her baby in my lap while she scrambled to the front of the plane to join the chaos! I just sat in my seat with an unknown newborn while the mechanics proceeded to put tape around a hole in the ceiling to make sure we were good to go again. A couple of hours

later, I was on my way to sunny Florida… no big deal! I’ve been in worse situations! Why the general public goes, so often, out of their minds, I will never know… hand me the conch!

Above All… While in Miami, I got to mix down my new, upcoming song, Above All, with four-time Grammy Awardwinning mixing engineer, Tom Lord-Alge (who also happens to be the host of my Miami event coming up). How long have you been working with TV Polari? I have been with TV Polari from the start, like a sparkling new light in the entertainment world. In one big poof, Gabbi materialised and the rest is history!

When did Gabbi come to life? You there! Please believe me, Gabbi did not “come to life,” she arose like a phoenix from the debris of my ruined life and is now a pulsating, throbbing presenter.

Has she done any overseas work? Gabbi’s travelled and appeared in Europe, the USA and OZ now… so she gets about, the dirty bitch!

What inspired you to become Gabbi? After losing my business I had to pick myself up and create a new, fun person to take my life forward.

If you could interview one celebrity who would it be? Oh it’s got to be Lady Gaga as I’m so sure she’s my twin.

What was the first gig you did and how did it go? It was in Charles Street in Brighton as drag DJ Gabbi and she became an overnight success! I knew she was on to a winner when the twinks where molesting her (if only). What has been Gabbi’s most fun gig? For the DJ side of Gabbi, the foam and themed parties at universities are always fun and Bona Bingo at Legends; and for TV host Gabbi, holiday programmes across the globe. Oh yeah… and chuffing on Hampstead Heath. What are some of the mainstream TV shows you have worked on? Well sadly this year, I had to turn down being the new judge on X-Factor as Simon’s new fiancée would be so jealous of the incredible chemistry between us! But I had 2 great years of causing chaos with the crowds and auditionees on X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. I have also been on live shows like Big Brother’s Big Mouth and the lunch time show, Loose Women. Now I hope to set off to be Katie Price’s new stunt double in her new series, What Katie Did Next. Who do you prefer: Gabbi the DJ or Gabbi the TV Host? The TV host as it enables Gabbi to interact with her fans and fannies across the nation. Does she get involved with any Pride events around the country? Yes, Bournemouth Pride, where Gabbi arrived in spectacular fashion in her helicopter to the delight of the awaiting crowds. Also Gabbi, as expected, played a blinder at Brighton Pride even though the day became wet and moist. So no change there then.

You worked on the Grand Final of Queer As Talent. How much fun was that? It was endless fun and frolics both on stage and behind the scenes. And the talent was amazing. So QAT Season Two is coming up. Will you be involved with that? Absolutely. It’s a ‘must’ as I’ve got to find out all about the sweat, the tears, the gossip…and the sex, of course…Or is that a different show? Well, it’s all good to me. Do you do any of your own TV and film producing? In the past I’ve been editing, directing, producing, chuffing… you name it and I’ve probably done it for one of the crazy shows over the years. Of course, this doesn’t include the work on my adult collection - which is on the KY label. So does Gabbi have anyone special in her life? No, I’m so upset, there’s no-one that wants her! So if you are gorgeous, slim, smooth, hot, supple and have a great arse, then come find her now! What would Gabbi like to do next? Probably more TV work, perhaps music programmes on E4 or MTV, or host a game show like Celebrity Squares. I like to have fun with the stars.

The interior is the largest in the class and can seat 5 adults in comfort. The dash is far from inspirational but is a model of clarity. Equipment levels are reasonable but ÂŁ34,430 is the base price and once you start adding options the price can easily climb to ÂŁ40,000 plus. The previous generation E Class was an attractive car but I am not at all convinced about the styling with this latest incarnation. There are too many angles and creases and it just looks fussy and over done. Park it next to a Jaguar XF and it already looks dated. That would be fine if it was a taxi on the streets of Stuttgart, but less acceptable as an executive saloon.

The previous generation E Class was re-engineered half way through its life with many components replaced in an attempt to cure reliability issues. The new E Class was designed from the outset to restore Mercedes reputation as a maker of superbly engineered motor vehicles. The car would appear to be extremely well built with the use of good quality materials. To be fair to Mercedes, they have produced a fine car that does what a Mercedes should. It will transport To drive the car feels typically Mercedes, which means you and your passengers very comfortably over long a superb ride with secure handling and excellent refine- distances. When you drive the car it feels like a qualment especially at cruising speeds. It features a 3 litre ity product and you can imagine it will keep going for V6 diesel engine which is smooth and punchy. Economy years and be capable of very high mileages. That will could be better as you are unlikely to return much more be enough for many people to sign on the dotted line, than 35mpg in real world driving. ou may be surprised to learn Alfa Romeo’s future is far from certain. Despite a raft of new models in the last few years which have been well built and very stylish, we are still not buying the cars in sufficient quantities to make the business profitable and sustainable in the medium term to long term. Alfa is part of the giant FIAT Group and is now under notice that its volumes and profitability must improve quickly after years of under-performance or it has no future. To anybody who loves cars the idea of a world without Alfa would be a travesty. The Italian margue epitomises passion, style and performance. Alfa’s latest entry to the market is the MiTo. Alfa has not had a small car on the market since the Alfasud derived 33 which died 16 years ago. The name is derived from the cities of Milano and Torino (Mi To) and the

car has been on sale since the latter part of 2008. It is based on the FIAT Grande Punto platform but there are no visual similarities apart from the size, and the rear suspension is all Alfa’s work. It embodies Alfa’s latest styling direction, taking cues from the stunning 8C Competizione supercar such as the drooping grill and circular rear lights. It definitely looks the part and is certainly more special than your run of the mill small hatch. The market for premium small cars was started by the new Mini and all manufacturers now want a piece of the action, given its success. The key to this success is to produce a designer product with a price to match. So there was much anticipation at the MiTos launch as everybody was expecting something special just as the Alfasud was back in the 1970s. To a large extent the car delivered with its good looks, and it handled

and performed pretty well. It did appear however that Alfa’s development engineers had run out of time as the ride quality was at best poor, and the steering was vague. The car was simply not up to Mini standards to drive. The car certainly employed plenty of electronic trickery to try and make it fun to drive. The centre piece is a system called “DNA” which basically gives you three settings for the major controls including the steering and throttle. That is only the start and I will refrain from boring you with the detail. Suffice to say some manufacturers rely on these multiple electronic settings to camouflage basic inadequacies in the design. In this case the driving experience was not quite what it should have been. Stung by criticism Alfa has worked hard and now updated the car. Top of the list is a new range of “Multi-air”

engines. There is genuine advancement in engine technology here. Basically it amounts to electro-hydraulic operation of the inlet valves allowing a much broader spread of torque and better performance, economy and emissions. It really does work and these are superb engines. Alfa has taken the chance to revise the chassis and this has largely addressed the previous criticism levelled at the car. The interior remains the same and is a little cramped in the rear but is stylish and feels well screwed together.

Prices start from £11,945 for the 1.4 Junior and rise to £17,895 for the 170Ps Multi-air Cloverleaf. There is a large range of trim options available and some nice alloy wheel designs to choose from. The thing is with every Alfa Romeo, you already know you want one when you see it, however it drives. Saying you drive an Alfa Romeo is saying you understand that a car doesn’t have to be a rational purchase. An Alfa Romeo is emotion on wheels. You drive a Mini and people think you view cars as an appliance that transports you around. It’s a pas-

sive purchase. It’s the default choice. The problem for Alfa is that its potential customers are nervous about spending £15,000 on an Italian car that might be worth very little after a couple of years and might not be as reliable as it ought to be. But fear not. Things have improved dramatically at Alfa and it’s a fair bet that if you let your heart rule your head you might just have made the rational choice as well. Whatever the outcome, you will never be thinking to yourself “I could have bought the Alfa instead.” You will fall for this car completely. Let the love affair begin.

Imogen Redcroft This month, our counsellor, Imogen Redcroft, tackles the difficult issue of teenage homophobic bullying for a reader from Bristol. Dear Imogen This year I’m going to take my GCSEs and I’m trying to work really hard to get good grades. The thing is, earlier this year I came out as being gay to some people in my year and response hasn’t exactly been positive. There’s been no physical violence or anything, just lots of name calling and getting ignored – I’m not sure which is worse. I thought I would be able to cope with it but it’s really getting me down and it’s beginning to affect my school work as I can’t concentrate. The teachers said they would help but don’t seem able to do anything as it’s not physical and I have little proof of the verbal insults and general hostility. Have you got any advice of how I can get through these next couple of months at school? Darren, Bristol Dear Darren It’s great that you are focused on getting good grades in your GCSEs as it will help you get a good career and also on to higher education. Coming out is a very positive thing and shows you have confidence in your own sexual identity. However, despite all the laws on equality, there are many people who feel threatened by, and are very prejudiced towards gay people. Most 3SIXTY SOCIAL ISSUES

likely they also would bully someone who is overweight, shy, or different to themselves. Bullies have serious personal issues. You might be able to find a teacher you can trust and who will support you. Most schools have an anti-bullying policy and you are clearly being bullied; name-calling is a clear form of harassment and the school should support you. You need to find a teacher you can communicate with; talk to the deputy principal or school counsellor if you feel you can trust them. You are personally strong in that you came out when you wanted to. Do your parents support you in this, or do they even know? Have you talked to them about it?

“Coming out ... shows you have confidence in your own sexual identity.” In getting through the next few months, remember that these bullies get their kicks from trying to upset you, and they are clever enough not to be seen by any teacher when they are bullying you. So this is where you use that same strength you found when you decided to come out. You can decide they are weak and not of any importance and simply ignore them. The less effect they see on you might make them bully you less. You can also decide to report their behavior every time they bully you and make the school record the bullying. This will put pressure on the school Heads to do something about it. During all of this you will need to try to relax. This can sound hard but remember that you get stronger each time the bullying has little effect on you. Any friends you have you may need to rely on them a bit for support.

Above all, remember they have personal problems with gay people, it is their problem not yours. Throughout life one has to deal at times with nasty people, it is normal unfortunately. You may need to talk to someone outside of the school, your family or friends, and there is free confidential help available at the Counselling Support Network on www.counselling-directory.org.uk and you may find this useful. around us. In short, they are supporting what nature-based belief systems have been saying for centuries: that our thoughts, feelings and beliefs manifest things into our physical lives. Now everyone’s talking about it. We’ve seen or read The Secret or What the Bleep Do We Know? All the world’s avatars have told us it’s within our power and ability to do. Popular spiritual and scientific gurus now say it is how everything works. So why can’t we stick with the Law of Attraction/Conscious Creation/Power of Positive Thinking? It’s because we haven’t treated it like a new behavior.

Just like we’ve learned to travel through space; discovered the world is a sphere; and proven the Sun is the center of our galaxy; evolved scientists are, today, popping their heads up out of the herd and finding the possibilities in life are far greater than popular authority figures in traditional science, religion, politics, business and the media would lead us to believe.

Wanting to effectively incorporate Conscious Creation into our lives is similar to wanting to be a professional weight lifter. We can’t just lift a few big weights for a week or two and expect to have a beautiful, cut body that’s going to win trophies or gain lots of attention.

First, we need to build value into the new behavior (working out) then we need to make it a habit. We need to map out all the muscles that need to be trained then create routines for each of them so they are constantly challenged. We need to adjust our

diets so we reduce fat and increase protein intake. We need to be sure to get the right amount of cardio-vascular exercise. We need to choreograph and perfect our moves and poses. And we need to get enough sleep! What is the value of incorporating Conscious Creation into our lives? For me, I was tired of all the destructive patterns that kept coming up in my life: the bitchy boss, the controlling boyfriend, the shortage of money, the unpleasant interactions with strangers. I wanted change badly. Sometimes we become addicted to the circumstances in our lives no matter how much we want change. Like they say, a drug addict may have to be toothless in the gutter before they wake up to how much they want to live differently. I couldn’t take what was happening in my life any more so I committed myself to practicing Conscious Creation until I either proved it worked or it didn’t. If you can’t tell, I proved it worked in my life. Once we’re committed to the journey of incorporating Conscious Creation into our lives, we need to get ourselves in shape for the journey and stick to the routine until it becomes a habit. This is all about making your life better in whatever ways you choose. So practice at least as much as your Mother made you hammer on the piano when you were a kid. And make it fun! A big dollop of both, but I think it’s good to be nervous – it shows you care. Do you have any big, diva demands? Please say you do... I have attempted diva demands in the past and been told where to stick it. I do insist on a bag of mini-cheddars neatly arranged on a silver tray, though. What can we expect from the tour? There will be familiar characters from the show, but with all new material, there will be new characters like Supernanny and Nigella Lawson and some of my favourite songs from all three series. Lots of naughty, noisy fun and music. Your characters in the TV shows are fantatsic. Which ones do you have the most fun with? I love doing Kate Winslet – she’s like a member of the family now, I’ve

I don’t do people who are really in trouble, like Kerry Katona. Now YOU are a celebrity, how has your life changed? I’m not really a celebrity! I don’t really have any, but I loved hanging out with Emma Thompson on the set of Nanny McPhee – she’s an incredible person. Why do you think the gays love you, Katy? Ha ha – do the gays love me? jokes at parties? Not so much – I tend to socialize with people I’ve known for years, who have plenty to say themselves after a few glasses of wine. Who is your favourite gay icon? I love Barbra Streisand – I want a wrist band that says ‘What would Barbra do?’ Also The Divine David was an early inspiration. You studied theology at Oxford, probably a fact a lot of people don’t realise about you. You must be pretty brainy - would you say you are a spiritual or religious person? Do you believe in life after death? I would say I am spiritual – I do think that humans are more connected and intuitive than we tend to realize. I believe in a continuation of energy, rather than life after death. Time is not necessarily as linear as we in the western world would like to believe. What made you want to study theology? I was a Christian as a teenager – perhaps a way of rebelling against liberal parents! I wanted to know more, and once I did, I stopped being a full-on Christian.

I danced as a teenager, but that routine was tough. It took a week of 6 hour days and lot of practice to get it right. But I’m glad I did! Are you a single lady? I am not, no – I am a very happy unsingle lady.

You start your tour in Brighton, do you visit Brighton often and where do you actually live? I live in Liverpool and London. I have been to Brighton many times, and I love it. It’s like a perfect boutique city – small and stylish. I heard you were a reluctant performer and worked in production at first. What made you change your mind and were you always so confident ? I performed a lot as a teenager and at university, but was always told to try something else too, so that’s what I did for a while. But I missed writing and performing too much, so I took it up again.

Never say never… What is your biggest ambition now you’re a star? I would love to get into feature films, writing and performing, and I have loads of ideas for sit-coms too. It would be nice to write something longer than a sketch, with a proper story. What makes you happy? I like being in the sunshine with my family, watching our dog run around happily. What makes you angry? I don’t like it when people with a small amount of power use it to make other people’ lives difficult – airports can be a challenge for that reason! ow a lesbian teen in a prom battle has become an unlikely 21st century civil rights champion. By George Prior

It is 41 years since the Stonewall

riots took place in New York City. They became the defining event that marked the start of the gay movement in America - the first time homosexuals had fought back against a system that persecuted sexual minorities. Thanks to such people who vehemently refused to be repressed, most of us today take our equal rights for granted. Stonewall may have been over four decades ago, but still there is work to be done it seems in the supposed ‘Land of the Free.’

The new, and unlikely, pioneer in gay rights is a shy 18 year old, Constance McMillen. I’m sure you’ve already heard about her, but here’s the deal: She is a senior at Itawamba County High School in Fulton, a town in the northeastern corner of Mississippi, which measures a total of 8.9 square miles and which is home to around 4,000 people. She’s filed a law suit against her school after it cancelled the prom rather than let her attend with her girlfriend.

better things to do than get involved with a school prom? Ostracizing a lesbian school girl, it seems ranks higher on the municipal agenda than, say, improving social housing or job creation. Since Constance’s legal case went public, the story has now snowballed and she has become headline news across America.

As well as achieving massive exposure on news channels and chat shows worldwide, more than 300,000 people have already joined the Facebook group “Let Constance take her girlfriend to the prom,” and an anonymous donor has agreed to fund a prom to the tune of $ 50,000. Any money remaining will be used as a scholarship for Constance. Once again, as they did at the time of the Stonewall riots, the LGBT community has rallied itself and shown a united front to demand a change. She may not yet realise it but Constance is joining the ranks of other civil rights leaders from history, like Harvey Milk or Rosa Parks, who fought for their constitutional right to equality. For those who say she has “ruined prom” – get back to history class…this is history in the making!

“The prom is one of the biggest events in your life, but it should be for everyone. Not allowing gay people to bring a partner is discrimination. Some people have said that I’ve ruined their senior year and I am really, really sorry for that, but I’m fighting for a prom for everyone,” she said. Paul Walker, the Mayor of Fulton, says “I think the community, as a whole, is in support of the school cancelling the prom. At first she looks and sounds like any other 18 year old Southern Belle. But when she gets into her stride, she has the conviction and self-confidence of someone twice her age. And that is what is truly remarkable. You remember being a teenager, right? All that uncertainty about exams, sexuality, college, parents, coming out, drugs, friends, popularity…It was scary enough dealing with it all for yourself, but Constance has decided to handle all that stuff as well as publically fighting for what she believes in on behalf of teenagers everywhere. “I want to let kids know that it’s OK to be who you are and that they have nothing to be ashamed of,” she says. Thankfully though, not everyone is as bigoted as the authorities in Fulton.

Constance’s story is one of courage, generosity of spirit and determination. It has taken this unassuming schoolgirl from a small Mississippi town to remind those of us living cosy, urban lives, that homophobia is still rife in some parts of society. Four decades on from Stonewall, we owe it to ourselves and kids everywhere not to forget how far we’ve come and how much more still needs to be done to achieve full equality for everyone. As Howard Zinn said, “No act of social progress has come through the halls of congress, but through activism of the people.” Constance McMillen, we salute you! And as with any good fairytale, the heroine WILL go to the ball.

LEGAL ADVICE I have been refused a job because I am in a civil partnership; my employer has denied me a pay rise because I am bisexual; I am being harassed because my boss thinks I am a lesbian. These are just some examples of discrimination that the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 prohibit. Importantly, the law not only makes it unlawful to discriminate on grounds of a person’s actual sexuality but also their perceived sexuality. The law now also protects civil partners for example; it would be discriminatory to grant the spouses of married employees benefits but not the civil partners of employees. If you are treated less favourably, put at a disadvantage, victimised or harassed by discriminatory behaviour or policies you must submit a written grievance to your employer; go through the grievance procedure or wait 28 days before submitting your claim. You have 3 months from the last act of discrimination to issue a claim. If your claim is successful compensation can comprise loss of earnings and an award for injury to feelings. Awards are unlimited and can potentially be very high.

We want to have a baby using a surrogate. How does the law assist us to become the recognised parents? Parental Orders are designed specifically for when a surrogacy birth has taken place. It is similar to an Adoption Order in that it reassigns parenthood, but the difference is that once a Parental Order is made, a new birth certificate is issued. It replaces the child's original birth certificate and names the intended parents instead of the birth parents. This secures their position by granting them with full recognition as the child's parents providing them with all the associated rights and responsibilities. There are strict conditions to be met in order to obtain a Parental Order which should be considered carefully with your solicitor before applying and indeed prior to considering the surrogacy. From 6 April 2010 an important change is happening where the law is extending the right to apply for a Parental Order to same sex and unmarried couples.

Is it true we can hold our Civil Partnership in a church this year? Under current UK law, religious institutions are prohibited from performing civil partnership ceremonies. However, this could well change following amendments recently made by the House of Lords to the Equality Bill, due to come into force spring 2010. The move, supported by some Church of England bishops, will remove one of the remaining distinctions between civil partnerships and marriage. Churches will not be forced to register civil partnerships and go against their beliefs, but it does, however, mark a significant step forward for the gay community. It also permits religious language to be used within civil ceremonies. This Bill has not yet passed through all the stages of parliament yet, but A City Law Firm LLP will be sure to update you once the Bill is passed about your rights and how the Act affects you.

I had a wander down to the depths of Vauxhall, where I caught up with Minty at Barcode. It’s a lovely venue where you can go on your own or with friends for a night with DJs Steve Pitron and Paul Heron playing some bona music. Onyx is a great Friday night out at Area with some great DJ’s and sexy dancers - my favourite room is the pop room with Jason Prince, James St James and the gorgeous little Tuomo Fox. Then of course there is the fabulous RVT where there is always some of London’s best entertainers. Every Thursday you can catch Scott Capurro’s Position Live Comedy show with some very impressive guests, including Vivienne Westwood, Jane Turner and Jimmy Carr to name a few. The Eagle continues to be a great place to drink - with Danny making sure everyone has a great time.

Then there’s Sunday nights at Ku Club with your fabulous host, Lady Lloyd for her Hit Factory, On Wednesday the 21 April join Miss Dusty O, Glendora Mucklefanny, Vanilla Lush and all the girls at Trannyshack, where they will be celebrating Her Majesty, the Queen’s, birthday. I popped over to the Kazbar in Clapham where I was greeted at the door by the fierce Glendora who whizzed me to the bar! They have a big theme party once a month…and this month they’ll be doing 80’s retro funk. This will be extremely camp! And I am sure to be attending. I also popped in to see Miss Vicky Lee down at The Way Out Club which is in Charlie’s Bar every Saturday - a lovely little bar for trannies and their admirers. It was their 17th anniversary, and Vicky told me there’s going to be a charity night on 15 May. I also found myself having a couple in The Rose and Crown, one of my favourites in the area.

I first established myself in small bistro-style pub before moving on to many beautiful restaurants where people came together to ‘Eat, Sip and Celebrate.’ I love the movie Field of Dreams and my favourite line from the film, “Build it and they will come,” plus my passion for all things Hollywood and movie stars, led me to create a theme to my menu.

Now it’s time to let you in on the fine secrets of my success and share my recipes. So let’s eat. Each recipe comes with a name of a Hollywood idol or diva that the meal has been named after, plus whether to serve it as an entrée or main. If you’re confused just have another glass of red and keep cooking… This is my tribute to the stars.

Main: suggestion Caesar Salad is always a favorite and for the most, chefs tend to use Cos lettuce, I prefer a mixed salad of all types of greens. Your guests will find it less boring. Ingredients Most supermarkets sell mixed greens by the kilo or in a pre mixed bag. One or two kilo bag will feed a few as either a light entrée or main. Croutons Hard-Boiled eggs Shaved Parmesan Cheese Anchovies some for the dressing crushed and whole for the salad Caesar dressing make or buy 2 slices bacon Chicken tenders or a chicken breast cut up Caesar Dressing Mayonnaise Main: suggestion This is simple to put together and is an impressive entrée to serve to your sea shanty friends. Preparation Slice and dice bacon and cook off in frying pan, with no oil, after cooking drain off fat from bacon with a paper napkin and allow to cool down. In a large bowl place your mixed greens, mix through some croutons and the dried bacon, place anchovies whole around the top, that way if your guests don’t eat them they can pick around them. Slice the boiled eggs and place around the outside of the lettuce and then grab a large handful of shaved Parmesan and place in the centre. Let your guests serve themselves the dressing.Pan fry the chicken pieces and serve hot over the top of the salad. Now with a spoon work around the edge of the avocado skin and remove the flesh, it should come out in one piece, do this with both halves. Then slice each half into strips and place back into the shell, fanned out. You did keep the shells. Now sit the avocado on a bed of lettuce and then it, add three prawns unpeeled onto each shell. Boil a pot of water, add a dash salt and olive oil, when bubbling add the penne, cook for approximately 12 minutes, strain, rinse in cold water and chill. Then place the pasta in a bowl and pour over the Italian dressing and sit the remaining six prawns in position

The owner, Carlos, previously ran La Rueda - one of South London’s most renowned Spanish restaurants – so he brings with him a wealth of culinary and hospitality experience to Brighton’s Agua Dulce restaurant. Between us we managed to try a bit of almost everything from the extensive and truly authentic menu. The traditional, southern Spanish cuisine, including Andalusian pigs’ trotters, certainly doesn’t patronise English taste buds. The strong patatas ali-oli, the mojopicón, and the calamari are highlights which shouldn’t be overlooked. And I’ve never tasted better mussels. Fact.

I continued with the seafood theme with the Dorada a la Almeriense, which consists of sea bream pan fried in olive oil, bay leaves, paprika and white wine. My dining guest chose Pollo a la crema de almendras, baked chicken in a creamy almond sauce, which was described as “incredible.” For dessert we opted for the beautiful (and very alcoholic) Tiramisu and the baked apple and cinnamon, which were both hand-made to an excellent standard.

The staff were very friendly and immediately started bringing out tapas for me to try before I had even ordered any , they were eager for me to try different dishes I took an actress friend Charmaine Davies .Charmain ate more than me as I don’t eat meat only fish, Saying that she wasn’t complaining and enjoyed all of the dishes .The food was well presented and tasty and I am told there chef once worked with Gordon Ramsay ! The manager told me I would have to wait a while to try the vegetable paella so I did. I couldn’t work out why it was more expensive than the seafood version the vegetable one being £11.30 on the menu and the seafood one £9.95. It was tasty I also tasted the salmon with caviar (£8.30) .Tapas are just £2.75 or £5.35 for a portion and A la carte various prices between £6.30 and £11.30 (the veg paella) I could clearly see they had developed loyal customers and friends of the venue that hang out there The calamari was served cooked in white wine with onions unlike the traditional way, The menu is not too vast and very simple yet stylish. LEE DONALDSON PERSONAL TRAINER Lee began training seriously 2 years ago in order to compete in bodybuilding competitions. My aim this year is to compete in the BNBF competition in June of this year.

What should the top priorities of a personal trainer be? To design the best workout for their specific needs. How do you motivate your clients? Just remind them of their goals and the progression that there making. By showing them their own progress. I often take photos and compare them through the training process. Have you ever had a difficult client? Not really, you just work to the client’s standard. What are your best skills? I’m a great motivator and I love all types of sport, I’m a team player and a good leader. My main sports are football, rugby, basketball, and competitive bodybuilding I’m very competitive so I love training and pushing myself. Do clients ever chat you up? Sometimes, but I’m very professional. How important is nutrition? Nutrition can make or break your training program. Your training session should always be 50% your diet, 50% hard work in the gym. It is essential that you get a good balanced diet. If you want a good body shape, then it can only be achieved by a combination of a good diet and exercise. What do you eat? When I’m competition training I eat five portions of meat a day. For breakfast I have eggs and/or chicken, for lunch fish with sweet potatos, brown rice or brown pasta. I never eat sweets or chocolate. Who’s you favourite recording artists? I like dance music while I’m training.

Who would you most like to meet and why? Arnold Schwarzenegger. I really admire what he has done with his career from starting off as a bodybuilder to the acting and now being the governor of California. What would you like to be doing in five years from now? To become a professional bodybuilder, I would also like to move to the USA and open my own personal training business there – and maybe train for the Olympics. What is your major weakness? I’m a bit of a hot-head and lose me temper too easily. What are your hobbies ? Football, rugby, basketball, and competitive bodybuilding. So what have you arranged for our readers this month? This is a simple 4 week program which you can do at home or in the gym. Exercises A & B should be 3 X 10 reps and exercise C 2 X15 reps, so just enjoy and always keep a neutral spin. If you are short on time, performing big movements using big muscle groups together can be a really effective way to burn lots of calories. Working your upper and lower body together also requires lots of oxygen so expect your heart-rate to be high throughout this workout!

Lie back on an incline bench with the dumbbells resting on your lower thighs. Kick the weights up to your shoulders. Position the dumbbells to the sides of your chest with your upper arms under each dumbbell. Push the dumbbells up with your elbows to the sides until your arms are extended. Lower the weights to the sides of your upper chest until a slight stretch is felt in your chest or shoulders. Repeat. .

Lie on the ball with your back straight and parallel to the floor. Support the dumbbells above your chest with your arms fixed in a slightly bent position. Internally rotate your shoulders so your elbows are to the sides. Lower the dumbbells to your sides until your chest muscles are stretched - keeping your elbows fixed in the slightly bent position. Bring the dumbbells together in a hugging motion until they are nearly touching. Repeat.

Stand with your back to a wall, feet shoulder-width apart and place the ball between the wall and your lower back. Keeping your back straight, bend your knees letting the ball roll along your back until you are in a â&#x20AC;&#x153;sittingâ&#x20AC;? position with your legs at a 45degree angle. Return to starting position.

Dumbbell Squat

Begin standing with the dumbbells held to your sides. Bend your knees forward while allowing your hips to bend back behind you keeping your back straight and knees pointed in the same direction as your feet. Descend until your thighs are just past parallel to floor forming a 45-degree angle. Extend your knees and hips until your legs are straight. Return and repeat.

Dumbbell Lunge

Begin standing holding the dumbbells at your sides. Lunge forward with your left leg - landing on your heel then forefoot. Lower yourself by flexing your left knee and hip until your right knee is almost in contact with the floor. Return to original standing position by forcibly extending your left hip and knee. Repeat with the right leg and alternate lunges with the opposite leg.

Lie flat on your back with the ball between your feet. Contract your abdominal muscles and core then lift your legs up to a 45-degree angle. At the same time raise your back up off the floor while reaching straight forward with your arms to grab the ball. Lie back stretching your arms out fully and slowly repeat back the other way for 10 reps.

Pitch condition aside, the Spartans kicked off and Captain and fly half Matt Whitely punted the ball into the far corner, immediately placing Bristol under pressure.

Hadrian’s Cup Annual 10’s Tournament It’s a double celebration for Manchester’s Village Spartans this year following their success in the Hadrian’s Cup annual 10’s as they clock up their 10th year. The event, held in Newcastle, was a round robin tournament of full contact rugby 7’s with teams competing from London,Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Newcastle. It provided the teams the opportunity to play against other gay-friendly clubs in preparation for the Bingham Cup on 18th June. The international event will be held in Minneapolis with 25 teams from Scotland, England, Australia, Canada, France and USA. Round 1 - Village Spartans V’s Kings Cross Steelers The first match of the day kicked off with the Steelers playing their old rivals the Manchester Spartans RFC, pitting potentially the two strongest clubs against each other. This tense and gripping match played through horrendous conditions as rain lashed the pitch and tried to dampen the spirits of the teams. The game started in a frenzy and the Spartans defence, coupled with the conditions, prevented the Steelers from breaking the line. Although the Spartans were able to find holes in the Steelers defence, the boggy ground made an impact and the Spartans missed a few opportunities. This, however, did not stop the tenacity of the Spartans and the forwards were able to set the platform, doing the hard running as they worked the ball up the field. The Spartans continued to work hard and their opportunity eventually came when they were within the Steelers 22. From the back of a breakdown, scrum half Matt Whiteley ran a switch line, drew two men and flicked the ball behind him into the waiting arms of fly half Brad Allen who ran a lovely line and was able to score without anyone laying a finger on him to put the Spartans up by five points. This proved to be the match winner as the Spartans were able to contain the Steelers until the final whistle. After some courageous efforts from Steelers players Phil Hurt, Edward Muldowney and Darren Cooper, to push through the Manchester defence, the opposition proved too much. The powerful back line of the midlands team out-ran the London players and ended up winning theopening game by 5 - 0. *Village Spartans - 5 Kingscross Steelers - 0* Kings Cross Steelers Vs Newcastle Ravens (hosts) In the second and final match for the capital’s team, the Kings Cross Steelers faced the city’s host team, the Newcastle Ravens. This match proved to be as equally gripping as the first, with both sides taking advantage of each others weaknesses. The Steelers defending players were too strong for the Ravens and they held them off to the end of the game. Moments before the final whistle, Steelers fullback Ian Bowden managed to break through the Newcastle backline and touched a try on the scoreline. *Kings Cross Steelers 5 Newcastle Ravens 0*

Lock Neil Mason was able to turn the ball over with the efforts of fellow forwards Dean Bee, Alex Smith, Steve Farmiloe and James Hand. Scrum half Matt Whiteley picked the ball from the back of the break down, crabbed across the field breaking through one tackle and evading the remaining defenders to score under the posts in the opening minute of the game. Whitely bombed the ball into the far corner again and the forwards muscled up preventing the Bisons from getting over the advantage line. The Bisons eventually coughed up the ball, giving possession to the Spartans. From the scrum, Matt attacked the line and passed the ball to fly half Brad Allen who was able to fend off his opposite man to score by the posts giving the Spartans a 10 point advantage. The next passage of the game was a bit of a tug-o-war as each side tried to get the better of the playing conditions. The Spartans were able to master the conditions quicker and after sending prop Steve Farmiloe into the awaiting arms of the defensive line, were able to make a few yards and recycle the ball. The ball flew out to Brad Allen who attacked the line from 10 yards. He was able to offload to the waiting arms of centre Wayne Eastman who crossed the line confirming their place in the second consecutive Final of the Hadrians Cup. The game effectively wrapped up, the Spartans effort continued as Matt did a short kick on the blind side from the restart which Allen was able to dive on and the Spartans scrambled to retain possession. Full Back Dan Adams set up their final try when Whitely ran wide and was able to gift Brad Allen with his second try of the match, outpacing the Bisons tired defence to close out the game. *Village Spartans - 20 Bristol Bisons 0* Shortly after the game conditions worsened and the final match was cancelled, resulting in the Spartans retaining the cup, with the Ravens in second and the Steelers placed third. 3SIXTY FROM CARDIF London Falcons GFC maintained their place at the head of the table with their 7th straight win after a tough and virtually unplayable boggy conditions against Cardiff Dragons in Wales. Chances were few and far between as the ball spent most of the game in danger of disappearing in the mud, with the flanks being the only areas where any sort of decent football could be played. To both sides’ credit they got on with the game and made the best of the conditions, Falcons taking the lead midway through the first half when captain Ian Kehoe headed in Dan Walton’s cross. Walton then saw his penalty saved by the home keeper, meaning that the lead remained at 1-0 at halftime. Leon Briars scored his second in two games for the Falcons to give them a two goal cushion with 25 minutes left on the clock, before Falcons spurned another penalty opportunity, Tony Kerr this time being denied by the Cardiff keeper. Falcons pressed for more but ultimately had to settle for the 2-0 victory against a battling and clearly improving Cardiff side

FROM YORKSHIRE The GFSN Yorkshire 5-A Side Tournament 32 Five a side teams gathered in Leeds over the weekend of 13th and 14th March to attend the annual Yorkshire Tournament hosted by Yorkshire Terriers FC. The weekend was launched with a Party at Mission 2 and The Viaduct (Tournament Sponsors) where the draw took place. Teams representing 17 different gay football clubs were divided into 4 groups. As well as regular attendees the tournament saw debuts from a number of new teams from Aberdeen, Exeter, Trowbridge and a welcome return to a reformed Bristol team. Unusually, for the last few years, the weather stayed fine and clear of blizzards, snow and rain. The top 2 teams in each group progressed to the quarter-finals. After 5 hours of football a hard fought final was played out between Merseyside and Nottingham with Nottingham running out victorious with a 1-0 victory to take the newly named Viaduct Cup. The Terriers would like to thank all participants and hosts for another successful tournament and are already looking forward to an even bigger tournament and party in 2011. The Yorkshire Terriers train every Sunday at South Leeds Stadium at 2pm and are always looking for new players of any ability to join them. FROM BRIGHTON Brighton V Bournemouth. The local rivalry produced a nail biting game in the GFSN semi-final between Brighton and Bournemouth. The first half had Bournemouth in control but struggling to convert theirpossession into any clear cut chances against a strong Brighton defence -which benefited from the presence of new player Dan and ex-Trojan Stevie T. A corner for Bournemouth allowed Barlow to plant the ball at the near post. Goalie Mark Hyman just got a hand to it but a low spot kick from Aran Purwal slipped the ball into the bottom corner to take the lead. Brighton then got back in the game, showing themselves to be more dangerous than anticipated with a burst of attacks that kept the Bournemouth defence on guard. The game was then end-to-end with the ball finding the woodwork at both ends rounding off the first half with just the one goal. The second half started to a different tune. A push by Brighton saw mid-fielder Matt Harwood land the ball at the feet of new boy James Adeli for the equaliser. Spurred on, the home team continued to push but the chances were hard to come by. The game turned irrevocably when Danny Williams claimed a penalty when caught by Michael Duff during an uncontrolled burst across the edge of the box. Williams’ penalty was just out of reach for Hyman and the ball landed in the far corner of the net reclaiming Bournemouth’s lead. Brighton, although behind, continued to have the better of the game; notably some fine saves from manager Mark Hyman. There was a weekend of celebration ahead for Bournemouth, their 2-0 win takes them on to do it all again sometime soon as they reach the final.

BLAGSS Bowling Extravaganza raising money for Brighton Pride On Tuesday 9th March BLAGSS hosted the 2010 Ten Pin Bowling extravaganza on Brighton Marina. The event was held to raise money for this years Brighton Pride March. Over 180 players took part in the 25 teams representing sports groups from the LGBT community. This year’s winners were Brighton Bandits football team and the runners-up were BLAGSS tennis closely followed in third place by The Rainbow Chorus winning the wooden spoon. The individual highest scores went to Angela from BLAGSS golf team (271) and Elliott from Brighton Bandits football (396).
