JUNE
INBOX
Hi – welcome along to June’s edition of 3SIXTY It’ our 100th In a month when the UK’s capital is gearing up for Pride London, where more than a million people will take part in the largest LGBT event ever staged on these islands, we celebrate how far we’ve come in the struggle for equality in Britain.
We’d love to hear your comments and feedback. Email us at info@3sixtymagazine.com
Not only do we delve into London’s events, but we also take a look at how the Northern Irish capital will be flying the LGBT flag for its 20th anniversary of Belfast Pride.
Over the years I have seen Carol Jiani perform at venues and Pride events all over the country – and even one in Canada! I loved reading last month’s interview with her. She came across as the sweetest (and most pro-gay) person. The ultimate diva just gets better! Susanne, London
Whilst we here in the UK are enjoy ourselves with vibrant, flamboyant displays of Pride, those in other places across the world aren’t nearly so lucky. In the last few weeks alone, there have been countless stories of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender being persecuted. From the gay couple sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in Malawi, to the Iraqi lesbian asylum seeker facing deportation with the possibility of torture should she be forced to return to her native country, it’s a somewhat depressing picture. It’s all too easy for us in the West to paint a bleak picture, but in one African country, there may just be a glimmer of hope. We check in on Uganda and how the gay equality debate is finally out in the open and how the outcome will set a precedent for the rest of the continent. Let’s take this surge of optimism and run with it. Don’t forget to check out our news section on the website to be kept up-to-date with all the LGBT news from around world. Also this month we catch up with our girl, Amy Evans, who won last year’s Queer As Talent, and see how she’s forging ahead with her career; plus the devilishly handsome Hollyoaks actor Paul Holowaty gets Up Close and Personal with Tony V. From Amy and Paul who are in the traditionally gay-friendly industry of entertainment, to the historically hetero-dominated words of the Army and the Fire Brigade. In Personal Voices, an openly-gay soldier and a fire fighter share their stories with us. Not enough for you? We, of course, have all your usual favourites including Gavin Cromwell’s Psychic Readings; Fashion & Style news; expert legal advice; Queer As Homes; Social Issues; a bumper Sports section; Food features, recipes and reviews; all the big motoring news; the NYC goss from social butterfly, Sylvia Tosun; plus enough entertainment reviews and scene info to get you through the month. Enjoy the first month of summer. .

MACHO MARTIAL ARTS MAN Loved your piece about the martial arts guy in your sports section in May’s issue. Great to see the LGBT press covering martial arts at last! Normally, it’s something the gay media doesn’t touch. Keep it up! Ty, Brisbane EURO PRIDE Well done 3SIXTY for highlighting EuroPride in Warsaw. With it being held for the first time in an eastern European country we all need to make sure it is a success and as high-profile as possible as it will set a precedent for other countries. John, Bath STRAIGHTS AND HENS PARTIES I disagree with your report about Manchester in last month’s article when it said “The city has staged a huge comeback.” It might have done a few years back, but once again Canal Street is being filled by gangs of straights and hen parties. Smithy, Manchester F**k I WISH I NEEDED RENOVATIONS Those Buff Builders on the cover of the magazine (May) are hot. I have poured over the photos and read the article countless times. PUPPY LOVE
A barking mad, openly-gay, DJ has travelled across Europe to find love - for his bereaved dog. Eccentric Juan Veny was devastated when his beloved pooch Hanna died last Valentine’s Day and he was determined to find her Boxer boyfriend, Kito, a new bitch. So he made the journey to Amsterdam, where Kito was professionally groomed before hosting the biggest canine speed-dating event in the Red Light District and Vondel Park. Juan’s efforts weren’t in vain. We’re pleased to report that Kito found the bitch of his dreams, who came from the local dog pound.
STONEWALL CELEBRATES Britain’s largest gay rights charity, Stonewall, has celebrated its 21st birthday. Founded in May 1989 by a group of activists who were opposed to Section 28 (which bans the promotion of homosexuality in schools), Stonewall has successfully lobbied the government in key areas including civil partnerships, homophobic hatred laws and fertility rights for lesbians. The charity counts on support from a string of highprofile ministers, decision-makers and showbiz personalities, such as Sir Ian McKellen and actor-turned-politician, Michael Cashman

NFIC; GAY COUPLE SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON A judge in Malawi has sentenced a gay couple to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for “gross indecency” and “unnatural acts.” During his verdict, the judge said he was issuing the sentence in order to protect the public from “people like you”. 26 year-old Steven Monjeza, and his partner 20 year-old Tiwonge Chimbalanga, have been in jail since they were arrested last December after holding an engagement ceremony. The British government, Malawi’s largest international aid donor, expressed its “shock” and “dismay” at the sentences. The US state department said the case was “a step backwards in the protection of human rights in Malawi”.
AMERCIAN HIGH COURT TO RULE ON ANTI-GAY CHRISTIAN GROUP The U.S Supreme Court is to decide if a university can legally deny recognition to a Christian student group which actively excludes gays and non-believers. The case could have important implications for how public universities, colleges and schools should welcome or reject religious groups within education establishments. Founded in 1961, The Christian Legal Society requires members to conform to a Faith Statement that vows devotion to Jesus Christ and bans those with a “sexually immoral lifestyle.”
PORTUGAL APPROVES GAY MARRIAGE President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal says he will formally sign a law which legalises gay marriage passed by the country’s parliament earlier this year. The law had been fiercely opposed by conservatives in the country which is more than 85% Roman Catholic. The ratification will make Portugal the sixth country in Europe to allow same-sex marriage after Belgium, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. The announcement came a matter of days after Pope Benedict, on a visit to Portugal, told worshippers they should oppose the law.
MOSCOW PRIDE BANNED AGAIN The homophobic Mayor of Moscow, Yury Luzhkov, has banned the Pride march planned in Russian capital as part of the Moscow Pride festival. It wasn’t entirely unexpected as it’s the fifth consecutive year that the Mayor, who infamously described Gay Pride parades a “satanic happenings”, has demanded such a ban. “As soon as we receive the authorities’ refusal in writing, we will appeal it in the Tver District Court,” said the march’s organiser, Nikolai Alekseev.
E<NJ LESBIAN SCHOOL TEACHER DISMISSED FOR HER SEXUALITY A Canadian music teacher, who’s also the founder of a Vancouver children’s choir says she was fired from Little Flower Academy, after they discovered she was a lesbian whose partner had given birth. Lisa Reimer said Little Flower was “discriminating against me on the basis of sexual orientation. Reimer, who has refused to speak to the press, referred questions to Steve LeBel, a member of the Pride Education Network, who issued a press release he crafted with Reimer that suggested she was asked by the school’s head teacher after parents had complained.
HIV EPIDEMIC LOOMING IN PHILIPPINES The low use of condoms and a dramatic rise in casual sex and prostitution amongst gay and bisexual men may unleash an HIV epidemic in the Philippines, according to a new study. The report, published in the Journal of the International AIDS Society, said these groups were vulnerable to contracting the virus. “There is no guarantee that a large HIV epidemic will be avoided in the near future. Indeed, an expanding HIV epidemic is likely to be only a matter of time as the components for such an epidemic are already present in the Philippines, wrote Anna Farr and David Wilson at the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. .
DENMARK COUPLES NOW ALLOWED TO ADOPT
Following a change in Denmark’s law, gay couples who are in a civil partnership are now allowed to adopt children. Before last month’s ruling, gays and lesbians could only adopt as individuals in the country or their partner’s existing children. Other Northern European countries such as Iceland, Norway and Sweden have permitted same-sex couples to adopt jointly for some time.

AUSTRALIAN MINISTER IN GAY SEX CLUB SCANDAL
The government in Australia’s New South Wales has become embroiled in another scandal after its Transport Minister, David Campbell, quit after revelations he had been to a gay sex club. Campbell, who is married with two adult sons, was caught on camera by a TV crew leaving Sydney’s Ken’s of Kensington, before driving away in his official car. “This will be a very difficult time for my family and friends and I ask for their privacy to be respected, said the 52 year old politician.

Queeras HOME “FOR SALE”
With the economy still recovering from the recession and job losses, more and more people are cleaning out their closets and heading to local parks and setting up shop for a day.
“Boot Sale Vs Yard Sale and Ebay Vs Classifieds”
There are some basic rules to follow:
However for many, the embarrassement of selling Grannies favourite tea set or the toy collection they have had in the attic to pass down to there siblings can be a bit hard to deal with.
Be
So the next best thing to do other then a is a boot saleis a yard sale, but who wants hundreds wants strangers bustling through their gardens or homes looking for a bargain.
Seperate
So for those that are embarrassed to do so, they pay for a classified ad in a local free newspaper, and yes some are listed free and some charge by the column centremetre after spending few a quid and exposing of your private mobile number or home number to the world of readers along with the inconvienience of sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring or the buyer to show up , only to find out either they don’t bother, or are a local dealer and barter you down to a ridiculous price ,you just say yes to rid of them and the clutter. Now finally then their is Ebay, after many hours of registering all your private details on a secured website, taking photos, downloding, listing, a price and watching everyday for people to bid, sometimes all for 99p unless of course you put a reserve price that no one wants to pay and costs you extra on top of the commission that Ebay take, we ask for advice. ‘So what is the best way to sell your goodies”? The aim is to make a few bucks to pay off a few bills or maybe just to have a holiday that you just can’t seem to save for. Our secret shopper has some advice for you on selling your excess baggage.... The best advice is the local boot sale! Boot sale season is with us now that spring has sprung, weather is good and nearly every city has them and apart from the pain of packing the goods in your car and being prepared to bring some home, it can also be a fun and lucrative day.

LOND A CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE WILL TAKE OVER CENTRAL LONDON WHEN MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE TAKE TO THE STREETS FOR THE COLOUR AND EXUBERANCE OF PRIDE. GEORGE PRIOR REPORTS. More than one million people from across the planet attended last year’s Pride festival in London, making it one of the LGBT community’s largest celebrations in the world; as well as the biggest outdoor party in Britain.
Since then, the event has grown at an incredible rate. 2010’s festivities culminate on Saturday 3rd July with the iconic Parade. This year, the organisers are urging us to “Paint the Town Ruby Red”
for the 40th anniversary of the Gay LibAnd this year, even more people are eration Front, a group of militant homos, expected to celebrate in the capital in hippies, artists, students and activists an explosion of rainbow-tinted flamboy- who demanded that queer rights were out ance. in the public domain. The two week festival combines music, theatre, debate, parades, art and dance to raise awareness for pro-gay causes; to highlight the issue of discrimination; oh, and to have a damn good party.
With this in mind, Pride London is heading back to the glory glitter ball days of 70’s disco. Yes people, it’s time to bring a touch of Studio 54 decadence to the streets of our capital city.
Pride London, a registered charity, was established in 2004, and in its first year attracted a little over 30,000 for a parade and a political rally in Trafalgar Square.
In addition, The 8 original GLF demands are still very much relevant today. So grab a rainbow flag and walk with Pride. The Parade will set off from Baker Street at 1pm and head down.

Oxford Street and Regent Street moving alongside some of the major sites of London, before culminating in Trafalgar Square, via Piccadilly As always, Trafalgar Square is set to host a wealth of famous speakers, market stalls and a world-class line-up of music acts from around 3pm. The artists are yet to be confirmed, but a couple of top notch divas are a given. If the rally and concert isn’t your thing, head into Soho where most of the streets will be closed off for a massive street party Amongst its many charitable causes, London Pride is once again supporting the Love Without Borders campaign. Backed by Peter Tatchell and Stephen K. Amos, LWB focuses on the rights and plight of the LGBT population within the Commonwealth.

DON It’s fronted by Naechanè Romeo who was originally born in Guyana, a Commonwealth country, where being gay is still punishable with imprisonment. If this year’s parties are going to be big, in 2012 they’re going to be off the hook. Not only will London host the Olympics; the Queen will be celebrating her diamond jubilee; but more importantly, over 1.5 million other queens are expected to descend on the capital for WorldPride. in 2012. London has one of the largest and most diverse LGBT communities on the planet and it is a fantastic opportunity to inspire cities across the globe.” As for this summer’s Pride, chair Paul Birrell says: “If you’re putting on any LGBT Pride inspired events during our two week festival and would like to tie-in with us, get in contact. You could help us raise vital funds for LGBT Community groups, charities, and causes by turning your event into a fundraiser.”
As we’ve seen with depressing regularity this year there are still many places around the world, and even here in the UK, where LGBT people are still not able to lead their lives as they wish. And that’s why Pride is so important. We need to be visible as a lack of information causes fear and homophobia. Also, by attending we’ll be helping to raise a shed of cash for good causes. Bigger, bolder and better than ever before, Pride London is gearing up to be a festival full of costumes, non-stop dancing, drag queens, topless boys, hot girls and live performances. Once again, now is the time for the UK’s LGBT party people to sashay their way around the beautiful heart of London in a wave of shiny, colourful optimism.

BELFAST
THIS YEAR THE NORTHEN IRISH CAPITAL CELEBRATES ITS 20TH YEAR OF PRIDE. GEORGE PRIOR HEADS TO BELFAST TO FIND OUT WHAT IS IN Belfast has pulled off the impossible: a makeover that puts even Madonna to shame. The city has completely reinvented itself from war torn to party central, it’s now one of the best destination cities in Europe. Along with Beirut, Baghdad and Bosnia, Belfast was one of the four ‘B’s’ on everyone’s ‘to avoid’ list –now though it should be at the very top of your ‘to do’ list. Boasting bars, clubs and restaurants to die for, plus a healthy smattering of history, Belfast is a fabulous choice for a weekend of hedonism with a hint of culture.
Belfast has a great array of gay bars. Slide, on Ann’s Street, is the newest bar on the block. It’s owned by the same people who have the very popular Muriel’s Cafe Bar. You need to beware though it’s tricky to find – just look out for Little Wing’s Pizzeria, it’s above it. It’s a stylish venue with table service on one floor and a small but perfectly formed dancefloor upstairs. Kremlin is Belfast’s best known nightclub for the LGBT community, and is usually the pinnacle of any big night out. Alternatively there’s Union Street Bar, a trendy gay bar which boasts a great club night on Saturdays which is open from midnight to 6am. For those who want to get away from banging house music there’s Dubarry’s which is set over three floors on Gresham Street
The city’s skyline is constantly changing as developers continue in their quest to reinvent the city. The old shipyards are giving way to the luxury waterfront apartments of the Titanic Quarter, and Victoria Square, Europe’s biggest urban regeneration project, has added a massive city-centre shopping mall to No visit to Belfast is complete with a the city. trip to Muriel’s Cafe Bar on Church Lane. AMY EVANS 2O10 DIVA It’s only been 3 months since Amy Evans won season one of Queer As Talent and Derek Jones-Bennett catches up with her and finds out her future plans. So, Amy it’s all sunk in by now I guess ?
I hear you will be hosting your own show on Brockiewood TV? Yes, Myself and E.N.V will be hosting HEY MR DJ, which is a pop show filmed in front of an audience and we will be doing interviews and introducing new talent as well as interviews with celebrities and D.J’s from the UK.
Yes, it was an exciting journey and I am so pleased I entered the contest. Who has been your strongest support? My partner Zoey and my family have been my strength and encouragment. Before Queer As Talent had you entered any other contests? I had entered Idol and never got through and that actually made me feel a little lost, but when I heard about QAT I was encouraged by Zoey to enter and it was a fantastic expierience. What have you been doing since? I still have my full time job. I have done some radio interviews and press interviews and speaking with the team about the months ahead. Are there any gigs booked where our readers can see you? Yes, I will be playing at quite a few prides, I know for sure I will be at Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol Pride. What about a tour anything going that way? I know that the team are planning things, and they are negotiating some work around the circuit. The boys wanted me to do a gig in London last month but I already had a holiday planned so I unfortunately had to say no, but that’s what is good they are not pushing me. We are pacing things out.
Have you worked with E.N.V before ? No. However he was a judge on Q.A.T and we got along fine, i am looking forward to working with him. What other things are planned with appearences? I have been invited to be a guest judge on season two of Queer As Talent , it will be nice to be able to give some advice and encouragement to the contestants.
retail version, I think it is also great that a percentage of the sales is going to a good cause like Broken Rainbow. What about any releases? Part of my prize was the recording of a single and once agian, when we have found the right song for me to perform, I will be heading to London to record in a studio there. Well Amy it has been a pleasure speaking with you and i look forward to seeing your career progress .
Amy’s performances can be seen online www.queerastalent .com If any venues would like to book Amy, please contact the agency on 020 88 55 8006
The second season was postponed were you concerned? Not at all, I know that it is a big contest and takes some organising and that when it is announced to be back on it will be as big as season one and i look forward to being a part of it. You won a holiday is that where you have just returned from? No, this was a personal trip, the holiday I won has been replaced with a holiday to Malta, so I am saving it for later in the year. What about your fellow contestants, do you stay in touch? We speak to each other over the phone and through Facebook, I will be performing with Chris at Bristol Pride I believe. Have you seen the DVD ? I seen the TV version and I am looking forward to getting my copy of the

Noble
Laura Noble is a firefighter with the London Fire Brigade.
I’ve been a member of the London Fire Brigade for eight years now – but it wasn’t what I’d originally planned to do with my life. When I was younger I had always dreamt of becoming a PE teacher, but I couldn’t get a handle on maths and couldn’t get into teacher training. Eventually though I did go to uni and studied Sports Science and Drama in Twickenham. After my degree, I was working in a sports shop and I was thinking about what else I could do. I went to a couple of career days and started to find out more about the fire service. I knew that I was the kind of person that couldn’t sit in an office for the rest of her life. I wanted a physical aspect, a team work aspect and above all, variety. And being in the Fire Brigade certainly offers that. My grandfather had been a fireman too so I’d always heard tales about his time in the Brigade. I guess this subconsciously whetted my appetite. When I first joined the Fire Brigade I wasn’t out to my folks, let alone to people at work. I wanted to settle in first and then see how it went. As time went by, I knew I had to tell people as I didn’t feel I was being true to myself. It was a stressful time for me and my head was spinning with anxiety. But looking back as I do now, I’m sure it was a far greater issue for me than it was for anyone else. It was me who was making it all a big deal. I can honestly say that I have experienced no hostility from the team at work whatsoever. No-one was overly surprised, perhaps due to the way I look, and they were very positive in their reactions. I’ve worked in three different ‘watches’ over the years and people have been very open and receptive The Fire Brigade has very strong procedures for anyone who feels that they are not treated equally, whether that is down to sexuality, race or age, so people like me feel very secure at work. We have a growing number of LGBT people as we strive to be representative of the community we’re serving. I 3SIXTY PERSONAL VOICES
am proud of being a firefighter who is a member of the LGBT community and I march in uniform at Pride events around the country to reflect this. The London Fire Brigade is a progressive place to work – even taking part in LGBT History Month. Many private companies are not this forward-thinking, are they? Getting out in the community is now a big part of my job, and the job of the Fire Service in general. For example, we attend college open days, run youth schemes, organise fire prevention programmes, training initiatives, as well as actually being a fire fighter. Again, it’s all about the variety. In my grandfather’s day as a firefighter, it was more about the hero status of the job, but now we’re more public focussed, which I love, as we engage with the community so much more. For instance, alongside my LGBT work within the Fire Brigade, I work with young offenders and have even learned sign language. I still get a huge buzz out of my work and it’s so good to see a more diverse fire service than ever before. Perhaps the only downside would be that occasionally you would need to miss out on a family Christmas or a birthday, or you have to deal with a fire with fatalities, but the pros far outweigh any negatives. My partner, who’s also called Laura, is very supportive of my role as a firefighter. I think she’s quite proud of what I do – although every now and then she does say, “Be careful” as I head off to work.

We’re a good team and I enjoy what I do very much, but when I first came out it was very different. I didn’t tell anyone that I was gay – and this was partly due to the law at the time when I joined; but really it was because I supposed I was scared of what the recriminations would be.
OUT AND FIGHTING It took me a couple of years to eventually adFOR HIS COUNTRY! mit to my superiors and my regiment that I was gay and proud of it. It was something that needed to be done as I was driving myself mad with it. I was living a lie and I hated it.
Most people were OK with it and not a lot was said – to my face at least. There was this awkward silence a lot of the time for a while and I did notice I was made to do a few more of the chores than I did when no-one knew I was gay! Now though things are vastly different. I am very happy with who I am and I am very happy that I came out.
Going into the army is not the first career choice for most gay men. But for me it was something that I’d wanted to do because of my love of horses. I’m in the Household Cavalry and have just come back to Windsor from a tour in Afghanistan. Afghanistan was tough, there’s no doubt about it. The conditions are difficult, the days are long and intense, and you’re away from your family and friends for such a long time. But the hardest part was seeing two of my friends get killed. Seeing people you’ve worked with, are friends with, getting blown-up is something you’ll never forget. We all had to really pull together and get through it as a regiment. We have to be professional, even when the going gets very, very tough, as we’re there to do an important job and must stay focussed. Everyone in the regiment now knows I’m gay and I think it is all pretty much accepted now. There is, of course, still a lot of banter and some of it is directed towards me – but that’s what you get when you put a load of blokes together in any situation, isn’t it? We all get it though – especially if you stand out in any way, like I do for being gay. But to be honest, I probably give more of it than I take! Being openly-gay doesn’t affect my job on a day to day basis, although I have noticed that most of the guys will wait for me to finish having a shower before they’ll come in. Which suits me, frankly!
I think it is so much easier for gay guys and girls in the military to be themselves nowadays. Not only has the law changed but also society has opened up to the idea that gay people are just as good as straight people when it comes to serving their country in this way. Something that was unthinkable when I first came out was that I know of another couple of gay people who I work with – so we’re increasing in numbers and being more visible. I still think it’s a little easier for a girl to come out as a lesbian, rather than a bloke saying he’s gay in the army. Men have that whole lesbian fantasy thing going on, don’t they? A lesbian soldier I know often gets ribbed by the guys about her sex-life. I suppose I am a bit of a trail-blazer as there were no openly-gay people in my regiment. There were no gay role models to seek help or advice from. Now I’m more senior I have to be more serious than I was before and have more responsibility and I hope that with the seniority gay people will say that, actually, it is OK. I’m now happily settled and have a partner, Craig, who I met in a club. It was one of those things that you kind of just know that it is right to be with him from the moment we met. I couldn’t get him out of my head. It is hard being away from home when we go on tour, but I love the work I do. And Craig’s said the idea of going out with a soldier is a turn-on!

B<CCJ s K=c\j_ Kfe\ Achingly cool R & B diva, Kelis’ fifth album, comes courtesy of uber-producer and Black Eyed Pea Will.i.am’s label. It’s the most extreme manifestation so far of the executive producer’s policy of mixing urban R & B with European dance music . As brilliant as always, Kelis is a natural on dance/hip hop hybrids like Scream but you can’t completely escape the notion that she’s just being tacked onto some of Will.i.am’s pre-made tracks. Even when she mentions her break-up with rapper Nas it sounds contrived. She deserves better than to be playing second fiddle on her own album.

After the success of their debut album, Hopes and Fears, and its eternallypopular single Somewhere Only We Know, the trio has spent most of the six years rebelling against the wannabe-Coldplay tag. More often than not, Keane’s attempts to beef up their sound have resulted in tracks that just try too hard, like their new collection, Night Train. The trying too hard theme is nowhere more evident than on Looking Back which samples the fight theme from Rocky. Seriously. Have you seen Keane? Their attempts at incorporating elements of hip hop on Back in Time are also slightly cringeworthy. Thankfully, the rest of the album is better, drawing heavily as it does on 1980s disco-pop. A cover of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Ishin Denshin is the standout track. Whilst groups who change their direction are often praised for being experimental, this album seems to be having an identity crisis. Night Train proves that genre-hopping is not for Keane.
A8D<J C@;;<CC s :fdgXjj Why Jamie Lidell is not yet a worldwide pop phenomenon is truly baffling. He is in possession if one of those voices that shift effortlessly between the soulful growl of Rod Stewart to the smooth creaminess of Luther Vandross. This album - his fourth – is, without doubt, one you should add to your collection if you class yourself as a true music-lover. From the Outkast-esque, Your Sweet Bloom to the Prince-inspired funk of I Wanna Be Your Telephone, this album should cement his place in the industry. James Lidell: your now is now.
K?< 9C8:B B<PJs 9ifk_\ij The duo will no doubt be fed up with the comparison, but the fact remains they are the new White Stripes. Whether they like it or not, the strippeddown guitars, the pounding drums, and the hip-hop gaits have The White Stripes stamped all over it. Likewise, the mark of their recent Blakroc rap/rock project is heard on I’m Not the One and Too Afraid to Love You. And though Gnarls Barkley’s Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton has collaborated in the past to great effect, on this album he only produces the one track. But such is the brilliance of the album; he’s hardly missed at all. *J@OKP PLAYLIST

Viggo Mortensen, who uses his understated excellence to full effect, and his son, struggle for survival as they wander across a destroyed America, trying to locate the coastline. John Hillcoat’s movie is perfectly true to the book on which it’s based and the cameos, including those by Robert Duvall and Michael K Williams, are stunning. The one major downside is that it is very long and half way through feels like a bit of a slog. If you’ve read the novel, you’ll know that McCarthy’s precise narratives are so fruity and vibrant that you wonder if it was actually worthwhile making a film at all as it can add so little. In addition, even though the feel of the movie is superbly downbeat, the ending doesn’t pack the emotional punch - one way or another – you’d be hoping for.

HIV & News A PERSONAL JOURNEY:
16 YEARS POSITIVE AND GOING STRONG An anonymous 3SIXTY reader
This month we asked our writer to share some more of his story with us, due to responses from our readers. When HIV first hit I was as naive about it as everyone else. I thought just from breathing the same air as someone that was diagnosed positive I could catch the virus. The problem was there was so little information out there, it was no wander the world was in HIV turmoil. Straight doctors new very little, and new no one to turn too. There was hardly any written material and even in most medical centres there wasn’t much information on display. Then they evented the Grim Reaper commercials on television, just to try and scare the shit out of everyone. It worked. and it just created homophobia awareness - not HIV awareness. Meds back in the late 80’s began to be developed but for some there was no resistance. I remember the first HIV pill I was prescribed it was the size of a 50p coin and I had to break it up to take it, I was also told that if I got a rash from taking the pill to rush to the hospital and that it just did, only after the first dose my body didn’t accept it. You see, back then it was all guess work and trials. Doctors wouldn’t put you on meds until your TCell count was below 500 and then they had to work out which drug cocktail to put you on and then it only worked for a year or so and they would have to find something new. The sad thing was it was often too little too late, people were dying or
37
going from HIV positive to having full blown AIDS.
kids find little information and there fore think they’re safe.
Those detected too late and were not fortunate enough to receive the right treatment started to develop legions on the faces, backs, arms or legs and were looked at as lepers. Others were deteced with caposis sarcoma and were losing their sight, they became frail and eventually died and some a very lonely death.
Help centres lack resourses and people in third world countries have little help.
Nurses and doctors were afraid to treat you. If you went to casualty and disclosed you were positive you were put in a room on your own with a sign on the door that said no entry contagious. One by one we began to die and our bodies were cremated as the law stated we couldnt be buried. Gay men couldn’t donate blood, enlist in the army and gay partners were not known as next of kin and couldn’t wait with the families in the waiting room of hospitals and got news of their partner third hand.
“Nurses and doctors were afraid to treat you” Wills were contested and partners off loved ones become no-one significant in what may have been 10 to 15 year relationships.
As for me, I hate taking my meds everyday, as it is such a reminder of my carelessness. My TCell count is 850 and my viral load is undetectable, but I have to live with HIV everyday and I have to wander when will the grim reaper bite me in the arse and my meds stop working. I try and think positive but there are so many knock backs sometimes in my life I wander what the ..... Then I think how lucky I am to have survived for so long, and how I am fortunate enough to have meds available, and live in a country that has some readily available help. It’s the silence that hurts the most, being afraid to tell friends or work colleagues that I am positive, because of being afraid of their reaction, and then finding out that someone’s brother or son has recently been detected and wander what if I’d say something I may have been able to speak to them before it ws too late for them. I hope that by writing this to you to publish that it makes someone think twice about having unprotected sex. Then although my help is silence it has helped someone.
So what’s changed now? Well, to be honest, I’m not sure. Because today’s generation are still contacting the HIV and this is either ignorance or lack of information. Parents are not educated, you still find little information on display in medical centres, gay and lesbian magazines seem to be the only ones that advertise awareness, so straight

Each month singer/songwriter, record label boss, and queen of the NYC social scene, Sylvia Tosun, let’s us in on her fabulous life.
ÈC`]\ `j 8 :`iZlj É Amanda Lepore, Richie Rich and other late night Manhattan iconic fashionistas came out to celebrate the promo video for The Blonds’ newest fashion collection, which was shot and directed by Mike Ruiz. The theme of the party was “Carnival” and you can only imagine how everyone took that bit to heart... The room was a throwback to the early Vauedvillian days where freaks seemed chic and the slapstick short act was a sexy tryst. The dark, sultry casino-like city cave was decorated with an array of sparkly masks, sharp metal spikes, shirtless aerial acrobats, games of piety and of course, pink feathers. Celebrity DJ Cazwell was at the decks and all the onlookers were decked out in the type of attire that only Barnum & Bailey would approve of if they actually ever admitted they were gay!
All across the walls were these wide plasma screened images of Phillipe Blond slathered in lights, cameras and action-figure super-heroine-isms that just seemed to whip the walls into submitting into our humble fascination of grandeur. From just beyond the crowded hull, you’d hear the sound which anchors us to it all...”sluuuurp”... ah, yes, the resounding intake of God’s most notable inventions - Aqua Vittae - otherwise known as “hooch”! Yep, we were all feeling good; Phillipe was dressed in pink feathers, hung up in a swing, while we were circling around the bevy of worshiping wannabes just ready to rescue the moment he yelled,“Cuppy!!!”

Hooked on The Tudors… Osborne of Lids...
Yes, the rumors are true: I have longed to be back in time, wearing tight corsets and blooming petticoats prancing around Hampton Court whilst young boys sing in a choir as they are accompanied by the pipe organ’s roar throughout the celestial walls of a righteous tavern, all to culminate in Jonathan Rhys Meyers calling me over to him, looking me in the eye and making his commitment to making me his Queen when all the while I had better be virtuous to his degree of standard or else lose my existence.
That is what I would have named him to reign over all other milliners in the land, if I were King (or Queen). This past weekend, called for a seasonal visit to Victor Osborne’s hat store. We brought NYC’s premiere nightlife event planner, Mark Nelson along for the ride. He wears hats very well and quite frankly, was due for a new brim. Along our windy path down to Orchard Street on the lower East Side of Manhattan, where the roads are closed and people are flooding the streets, we had no choice but to park a mile away and join the herd...ah, the sweet little shops we passed by that seemed to be more on a lane rather than a street, just solidified the thought that quaint is never quelled in a truly quintessential city like New York. Certainly with these sentimental thoughts in mind, and when we finally stepped up to Sir Osborne’s Hattery, we had the great “quintessential” fortune to bump into Patrick McDonald! Known as “The Dandy” to worldwide fashionistas, Patrick is the one person who personifies New York City by his look, his genius, his attitude and his sheer sense of style and panache. We had such fun hat shopping with this New York icon. He regaled us of stories about a new book he is involved in that features paper dolls... I will say, his lovely intelligent conversation that emerged from behind those raven colored specs and brightly focused eyes was inspiration enough to introduce Burberry plaid into my wardrobe to exemplify that I am a true follower of culture.
Baccarat Babak!!! “If I were a boy” I would love to look like this. Jens Ahle Meyer styled and
Jens Ahle Meyer styled and shot by baccarat shot this photo as an art piece for her exhibit that is displayed in the new flagship showroom of the DDC Building this past weekend. Yes, this is a boy, by the way, and yes, I am truly amazed. This modern furniture showcase is owned by my friend, Babak, who has outfitted his sprawling Madison Avenue showroom with items that create a “fantasy flat land”. The “flat”, of course, is over 20,000 square feet of glass staircases, lounging leather beds, vintage travel luggage, transgender artwork and Baccarat candle holders! I burst open my rib cage with envy at the dripping crystal chandelier hanging from the 30 foot ceiling and wished I could suspend my languishing limbs from its prism-ed perches...
Ah, yes, the wonderment, the lure, the danger, the topsy-turvy fabulous life of a Tudor...and those dresses!!! I would promise my head be lopped off willingly if only to walk in that time slot and wear those threads for even a year...
No Guitars, No Drums, Just Orchestra…
For those of you Genesis fans out there, the trick of the tale was when I, the lamb who lied down, not on Broadway but in my seat at Radio City Music Hall, attended the Peter Gabriel concert with his 54 piece orchestra. I was certainly ‘in like a lamb’ not knowing what to expect when the great Gabriel stepped on to the stage and opened a musical box of stories that kept our attention for nearly 2 hours…and we were definitely roaring like lions as he descended upon us with new tunes he covered by the likes of Paul Simon as well as our old favorites like “In Your Eyes”, “Red Rain” as his daughter, Melonie, sang backing vocals. All in all, “Scratch My Back”, his new album “New Blood” has inspired me to lock myself away in the recording studio and dive deeper into my own creative lexicon to finish up the new songs for my upcoming EP.

Best-known for his role as the racist bully, Macki, in Hollyoaks, actor Paul Holowaty about his new West End role in homoerotic musical, WOLFBOY. How excited are you about Wolfboy? I can’t wait! We took it to the Edinburgh Festival last year where it was very well-received, so I’m really looking forward to bringing the show to the West End. What can we expect from the production? It’s controversial, dark, intriguing and sexy. It’s a psycho-sexual thriller so I don’t want to give too much away. Part of the brilliance of it is that it keeps everyone on the edge of their seats throughout. Basically, it is about the relationship between two boys who are just out of an institution – it could be a children’s home or mental institute – and one of them hasn’t spoken for three months. You begin to discover why throughout the play…and one of them may, or may not, have werewolf powers. Why did you decide to take on the role? It’s such an exciting project. I am a regular theatre-goerit’s one of my biggest passions – and there is some great stuff on in the West End, but there’s nothing quite like this. Nothing, that I know of, is as challenging, compelling and dark as Wolfboy. It’s dangerous! And I like that. I want to be challenged in the work that I do.
Are you single? No. I’m seeing someone (bashfully). Where did you meet? We met at the end of last year in Essex, where I went to drama school. Do you live together? No, not at the moment – I have too much going on with work! OK, we’ll move on…Where do you see yourself in five years from now? I’d like to be still in the West End. It is my dream role. I’m only 25 now and want to practice and learn my craft on the stage by working with top directors, writers and actors. The theatre is what I love best.
How did you get into acting? My first professional role was in Oliver! at the Manchester Opera House. From there, I got myself an agent, who was based in the North, and more recently I have one in London. I’ve been very lucky as my agents have found me some great jobs including Holby City, Coronation Street and, of course, Hollyoaks.
Any plans to move into film? I love TV and film but the theatre, for the time being at least, is where my heart is. Nothing can compare to that instant, immediate connection you have with the audience; knowing you’re entertaining them is very rewarding.
What was it like working on Hollyoaks – and with the famously beautiful cast?
Who are your favourite actors? I like actors who have that glint in their eye; that dangerous edge. I think Ben Wishaw, who did that film Perfume, and Daniel Day-Lewis are incredible actors.
Ha! I felt out of place! No, they were all great and it was an amazing experience for me. It was hard-work but learnt so much whilst I was there. I couldn’t enjoy it too much and get totally carried away as I was at uni at the time studying for my second year exams in History and Russian. Straight after I finished on the show, I went to live in Moscow and St. Petersburg for a year to continue my studies.
How would you describe yourself in a Lonely Hearts column? (laughs) That’s a tough one. Maybe: “Loveable, charming intellectual seeks a girl with similar interests and passions.” Is that too cheesy?

635 D
iesel coupes are now a reality largely due to the progress in performance and refinement that the oil burning engine has enjoyed over the last few years. BMW has now pioneered the diesel engine in a large coupe with the 635D and it’s a pretty impressive machine. With 282 PS it will hit 60mph in just over 6 seconds while returning a combined fuel economy figure of 41 mpg. It feels very fast with a huge wall of torque at low revs. It’s a BMW so it handles well, but the ride is a little firm for UK roads. This car is now the best seller in the 6 series range and it does make you wonder why Jaguar has not yet given us a diesel engined XK series. The reality for BMW is that this car has no real competition. If you want a big diesel coupe the £57,595
playing to its strengths 635D is your only option at the moment. I’m sure it won’t be long before we see more direct competition, but in the meantime BMW has stolen a march on its rivals. The problem with this car is I’m afraid the way it looks. Whilst I accept that styling is a subjective matter, this car is not handsome from any angle. The whole point of a coupe is that it looks good. Park it next to a Mercedes SL or a Jaguar XK will only reinforce this point. Don’t expect too many admiring glances! Styling aside though, this really is an awesomely competent machine.

ANTI-RETRO?
CITROEN DS3 BMW managed to move the game on with the Mini in 2001. Using similar principles they designed the ultimate
You may want to accuse Citroen of arriving a little late to the party as VW started a trend back in 1998 when it launched classless “accessory” car. It was the “new” Beetle. well built, drove well, and looked unThe company decided to capitalise on the public’s love around the world for the iconic “peoples car” by introducing a modern Beetle that took its styling cues from the original machine. Whilst it was instantly recognisable, in reality, it was little more than a rebodied Golf. It was mechanically conventional with an engine in the front, as opposed to the rear, as in the original Beetle. It was however never intended as a replacement, but more a fashion statement with prices to match. It proceeded to enjoy relative sales success. 3SIXTY MOTORS
mistakably like a Mini, albeit a large one!
A huge options list enabled you to personalise the car extensively and you paid handsomely for that privilege. It was, and continues to be a huge sales success. It was soon followed by the Fiat 500, very much in the same vein, although admittedly this car is a lot cuter and cheaper. Again it has been a huge success and a defining model for the rejuvenated FIAT Group. After the above trio, we were expecting something from Citroen that looked like a 2CV. That car is not a great starting point
from a styling point of view. An iconic car without doubt, it had little of the “love me” factor of the original Mini, 500 or Beetle. So what Citroen have given us is the DS3 which they proudly proclaim to be “anti –Retro.” It’s the same “designer accessory” principle as the other cars but the styling is bold and contemporary. It is based on the recently launched new C3, which is hardly an inspiring choice but Citroen have worked hard on this car to give it excellent driving characteristics, whilst providing the top drawer finish required in this market.
“The engines are above average” The range starts at £11,700 for the entry level 95PS 1.4i, and rises to £15,900 for the top of the range 150PS 1.6 Turbo. There are three trim levels, Dsign, Dstyle and Dsport. So, very clever use of letters! This is before you dip into the options list. I won’t trouble you with them all but here is a taster. Urban Tribe Spirit gives you liberally applied “graffiti” type logos,
steers well. The interior may again be related to the less brash C3, but it’s still stylish with sufficient use of different material inlays to lift it above the usual small hatchback norm. Where the car does score however, is that it makes a reasonable job of being a full four seater. As a result of its less compromised “retro” design, you can use this car to move more than two adults around, unlike a Mini or Fiat 500.
So it’s a brave attempt by Citroen, and they may genuinely move the “accessory” car game on with the DS3. I’m not quite sure however, we have completely fallen out of love yet with the “retro” car. As ever, you are the king maker and will surely decide its fate.
My Way Signature gives you an option pack very much in the Mini mould, and if you are really brave Zebra Spirit gives you - yes you’ve guessed it! It’s all completely over the top but amusing at the same time. Once you get passed the funky paintwork and Zebra stickers there is actually a pretty decent car here. The engines are above average especially the turbo, and it handles and

B`k Npebffg “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.” – Dalai Lama
What is happiness? Happiness could be a new pair of shoes. Happiness could be a new garment, a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates. What defines happiness is different for each individual. It could be the safety of a relationship, cuddling on the couch with someone special, satisfying our current conquest, making others happy, or ticking off items from that list of projects and errands that runs endlessly through our minds. Though these examples of “happiness” may give us joy in the moment, they are certainly not lasting nor are they very reliable. Flowers fade, chocolates get eaten, fashion changes, our efforts are not appreciated, projects & errands are completed, and oftentimes the objects of our affections are not what they seemed to be at all. Happiness appears to come with a price tag. After the glow wears off, we’re left feeling dissatisfied, unfulfilled and wanting more. Sometimes, we feel victimized and downright sad or angry! Eventually, we realize we’re right back where we were before: searching for happiness Is happiness just a cycle of come and go like the children’s song above intimates? Do and do again; reach and reach further for the carrot just beyond our grasp? It is if we’re attached to defining happiness in terms of things outside of us.
How do the chocolates and flowers and clothes and people and projects and conquests make us feel happy? They don’t actually “make” us happy, they remind us of past situations where we once felt happiness. Truthfully, external people and things can’t “make” us feel anything; like love, happiness, security. etc. Instead, the people and situations around us right now are reflections of what, indeed, we are already feeling; whether we’re aware of it or not. Taoist parable: Is happiness just a cycle of come and go like the children’s song above intimates? Do and do again; reach and reach further for the carrot just beyond our grasp? It is if we’re attached to defining happiness in terms of things outside of us. How do the chocolates and flowers and clothes and people and projects and conquests make us feel happy? They don’t actually “make” us happy, they remind us of past situations where we once felt happiness. Truthfully, external people and things can’t “make” us feel anything; like love, happiness, security. etc. Instead, the people and situations around us right now are reflections of what, indeed, we are already feeling; whether we’re aware of it or not.
So don’t let the TV or newspapers or advertisers get you down – take charge of what you feel! Don’t let the bad drivers or rude clerks or cranky partners get your panties in a bunch – choose to experience the feelings you WANT to have. Here’s how: Simply recall the times when you once felt the emotion you want to feel right now! Think about the occasions when you felt loved. Remember the moments that brought you happiness. Call to mind those days you felt safe and secure. These memories will, of course, include people and situations but what is most important is that you are choosing what you want to feel rather than allowing other people and situations to choose for you. You are now in the driver’s seat. When you immerse yourself in positive feelings by bringing to mind your past positive experiences, you attract people and situations that bring you new memories of those same positive feelings. You are doing it all. So the chocolates, clothes, shoes, cars, lovers, significant others, conquests, flowers et al then become very valid paths to the feeling of happiness already deep within us as long as we remember we are choosing them to help us get there.
In any given situation, feelings bubble up from deep within the wellspring of our inner selves: happiness, anger, joy, sadness, love, fear, abundance… And we can tell what it is we’re feeling simply by becoming aware of our surroundings and examining the situations and attitudes of people in which we are immersed in our daily lives. The beauty of it all is we have the power to choose what we want to feel any time we wish. We are NOT the victims of external situations and people; those things are, instead, a reflection of what we are in the process of feeling.

GEORGE PRIOR CATCHES UP WITH TONY V & GRAEME AUSTIN As 3SIXTY celebrates its 100th edition, and with its new move towards being a digital magazine, the Wizards of Oz, Tony V and Graeme Austin chat to us about the next step of the media evolution with the launch of Brockiewood TV, a channel set to take the magazine into TV Production.
taking the company to the next level; upping the ante and pushing the media boundaries, as it were.
the overall reader experience more scope - but they’re just about tobreak into TV!
Tony and Graeme, who have pioneered the way for free, national gay magazines in the UK, are now about to start trail-blazing all over again.
Unlikely as it seems in this mediasavvy world of us, but the LGBT community is not catered for adequately in terms of world-class TV.
So look-out, as these boys don’t do things by halves!
But that is just about to change.
I have been a part of the team since January. And since then there has been a lot of in-house talk about

The guys tell us the story so far...
What has it been like making the transition from living in Australia to moving to the U.K? T. Getting used to the weather has been tough - I miss the sunshine as well as the sea and seafood! I miss my family a lot too but thanks to Facebook I’m kept up to date with the ever growing V family. G. Finding my way around was the hardest thing for me. As far as the weather’s concerned, I love the cold and the snow and I know Tony loves a White christmas. Whose idea was it to buy 3SIXTY in the begining? G. I had been working on the magazine for 11 months when David Harvey had decided to retire and asked if we were up for it, or else he was shutting the whole magazine down. I knew then that it was a desicion that had to be made immediatley so we talked it over and went with it. T. We have aalways worked together in the 15 years we had lived together so it was a way that we could get back to building a business together. Has it been smooth sailing? T. No new business sails smooth, adopting staff , and clients it’s like building relationships, you have teething problems, and you have to iron them out. G. It was probably easier for me because I had worked with the staff and the clients for 11 months. Tony was my partner and that’s all anyone knew him as, so everyone had to get used to him and his buiness ways quickly, or leave. Staff did leave? T. Yes, they all eventually left but without dwelling on that I can say we are happy with the team of writers and designers we have now and they all have respect for both Graeme and I. G In the end that’s all we ask for: respect. So you have made a big decion by going just digital, going green. How did that come about? G. The magazine is well-read and respected, but with its revenue driven by advertisors, we have decided to take the magazine to our new television channel, Brockiewood TV, and putting out a one hour weekly show. T. We have a team of writers and contributors now from around the world, Australia, Spain, Hawaii, New York, Ire-
land and here in the UK and they in turn have their followers, so by going digital we can open the doors for advertisers to reach our readers from far across the globe. What is Brockiewood TV?
thing and we have about 100 contestants around the country just waiting for a date, we just decided we needed more time, to make it more competitve for the contestants and for the venues to benefit as well.
T. Our friend, Lance Fougere, and his buisness partner Adrianne own the TV Polari Network and they were kind enough to film the grand finals of Queer As Talent season one and soon after they approached me about doing my own cooking show on one of their other channels, and soon after that they called us in for a meeting and negotiated a deal to have our own channel.
Will you be adding members to the team? G. We can’t do it all on our own, so I am looking for some sales people and Tony is looking for some script writers. T. We have been interviewing hosts for the shows, the difference is we have time to build this up and make sure that the people behind the scenes and the production are 100% a part of the team.
G. The timing was perfect for us as we had talked about going digital with the magazine so it helped us make that positive decision.
So can you name any of the hosts or celebrities that will be on some of the shows?
So what kind of shows will be on Brockiewood TV ? T. We have 6-7 shows planned to produce and the team from AJAX productions will do all the filmig and editing, of course first up we will be doing Let’s Eat, thats a cooking show, where I will be able to share the dishes from my cook book and serve the meals to a table of guests, another is Brockiewood Live In London, that ‘s the magazine on TV , it’s a cross between Oprah and Jonathan Ross, with interviews with celebrities and our own Dr Phil and discussions with a gay Legal Team, and of course you George will be there talking about travel. There are others being produced as well, with some great hosts.
T. Yes, some of them we are still talking over contracts with but E.N.V and Amy Evans will be hosting Hey Mr DJ, and Rachelle Walsh will be hosting High Sprits, and there are still some spots available for other shows.
G. The TV opens the doors once again not only for advertisors and sponsors to reach the LBGT community as it is a LBGT channel but it also opens the doors for young and new talent to focus on the camera instead of on print.
How can anyone watch Brockiewood TV. ? G. Well firstly by buying a digital set box at Currys or one of the local electrical store, that will set them back about £90 and with that they can watch any digital channels. Also, it can be seen on demand through the internet or you can go right now to our website, www. brockiewoodtv.com and click on the watch now button and start watching it free on line .
I heard that you have a new dating show as well.? T. Yes that’s called Take Me Home To Meet Mamma and gay men and women get to go on a date with perhaps the partner for life, but Mamma has to approve! It was ashame you had to postpone Queer As Talent, will we be seeing a second season soon? T. Absolutley! Look we love the whole
So how does one apply to host a show? T. If you go into our website www.brockiewoodtv.com and go into our recruitment section you will find a list of jobs. Will there be any other many stream TV shows to watch? G. Yes, we have been going over a list of American series we can take to air, and have locked in Brothers and Sisters and a few others.
Well thank you guys, and I know there are a lot of people that do have respect for what you are achieving and I myself enjoy working with you and look forward to seeing the Wizards of Oz on tv soon. 3SIXTYThe WIZARD OF OZ

GEORGE SAYS
B
EING GAY IN UGANDA IS TO BE HOPEFUL By George Prior
increasingly hostile attitude towards gays and lesbians.
and public debate going on.
We’re in an era when we’re all getting fatigued BY the constant political and economic crises that bombard us via the news channels from around the world. And so, proposed legislation in Uganda to execute gays seems to attract as much attention from the world’s consciousness as a weather report from the Sahara desert.
Pastors Scott Lively, Caleb Lee Brundidge and Don Schmierer, who work with Ugandan faith leaders and politicians to help stop the “homosexualization” of the country, are often citied as being the worst culprits.
Although there is a large chance they will be beaten – or worse - gay men and women are telling their stories in the newspapers; and protests and legal battles get fair and often favourable coverage in the media. However, this is hardly ever mentioned in the West.
Law makers, politicians and news editors count on the brevity of our attention span, but some stories demand our undivided attention. So how does the idea of executing gays in a majority-Christian nation come about?
D
Gays and lesbians in Uganda already face imprisonment for up to 15 years. Under a bill proposed at the end of last year by David Bahati, the government could kill HIV-positive men and jail people who don’t report “homosexual activities.”
ment.
Of course, all of us are officially outraged by all of this. President Obama called the proposed legislation “odious.” Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, also mentioned Uganda at the National Prayer Breakfast. And evangelical pastor Rick Warren made an impassioned video plea to Ugandan pastors, declaring the measure “unjust,” “extreme” and “unChristian.” But that, it seems, is just about it. Words like “odious” are not enough. If it’s decided that genocide is “too political” for interference, then what is the point of politics? Although it was Bahati that wrote the bill, several other evangelical Christian ministers operating in Uganda are just as much to blame for the
Of course, some pastors are opposing the bill, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has said the punishment is too extreme. Human rights campaigners are predicting the bill will be toned down to exclude capital punishment, but imprisonment is also unacceptable. Especially our politicians.
It seems unlikely considering the proposed bill and the conservative, antigay culture, but Uganda may just be Africa’s best bet for improved LGBT rights. If, as expected, the bill fails to go through in a few weeks’ time, it will set a precedent throughout the entire continent.
espite homophobia being real and widespread, Uganda has a vibrant Gay Rights MoveDespìte homophobia being very real and widespread, Uganda has a vibrant gay rights movement, and nowhere else in Africa, except may be South Africa, is there a more open
We may be suffering a news/crisis overload; but some stories are frankly too important to gloss over. Brave men and women in Uganda are fighting powerful political and religious institutions in the name of equality.
And they seem to be making head way against a backdrop of violence and hatred. Their optimism and aspirations are truly inspiring.

LEGAL ADVICE If I help my gay friends have a Is this abduction? child can I be liable for financial contributions? If a child is not returned to the parent with whom he lives at the Biological parents are responsible agreed date and time and it is for supporting the child suspected that the other person is financially. As a third party you not intending to return the child would still fall into this definition then it is important that you seek & be liable for maintenance! legal advice as soon as possible. In December 2007, a man from London donated his sperm to a lesbian couple rather than go through a fertility clinic. The couple split and they made a claim against him for child maintenance. The CSA found he was not exempt because he was known to them since they had elected not to use a sperm bank where anonymity provides protection to the donor. Not only was he liable to pay maintenance going forward but also the arrears for not contributing to date. If making this gesture take legal advice first and ensure you draw up sufficient documents to protect yourself. Ensuring that the birth certificate is re-issued in line with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2009 this not only allows them both to have parental responsibility over the child to the exclusion of the biological father, but also gives the father protection from compulsory financial support in the event of a break up
If there is already a Residence Order (which determines with whom the child should live) in force, this usually contains a provision preventing the removal of the child from the UK without consent. If this is the case an urgent application to the court under the Children Act 1989 should be made to enforce the Order or if no Order is already in force an urgent application for a Residence Order and a Prohibited Steps Order should be made in order to prevent the removal of the child and/or secure their return. You can also apply for an Order for the child to be produced to the parent whom the child should normally live and also for third parties to disclose any relevant information they may have as to the whereabouts of the children. The Child Abduction Act 1984 makes it a criminal offence to remove a child without the appropriate consent.

In a gay relationship, how are legal parental rights over children acquired? A lesbian couple can have both names placed on the birth certificate immediately if the biological father consents to this before the child is born or they use a sperm bank. If a gay male couple wish to have sole parental rights over the child, the only way is through adoption. If your partner fathers a child, you will have to adopt the child in order to hold the same rights and obligations as a natural parent and be on a par with your partner. Being in a Civil Partnership will be a factor that is taken into consideration when granting the adoption Order in your favour. While not being in a Civil Partnership will not prevent an order being made, it will certainly be harder to persuade the local authority that adoption is in the child’s best interests.
In the event you are unsure take advice and make an application.

The nations favourite ‘ginge’ has been given a warm welcome back to our screens, but it feels like Patsy may have some bigger and brighter ideas to go along with her come back to the square, she is very talented and passionate about beauty and products and producing her own take on merchandising and marketing, her son definitely shows signs of being very gifted and creative in the arts somehow and may even collaborate on projects with his mum in the future, it seems a very social time for patsy coming up leading to more challenging work in acting and fashion, new life seems to be blossoming around her and she may start feeling broody, a big charity event will gain her a lot of respect! The Tarot I pulled for Patsy is ‘Queen of Swords’ which shows some shrewd business sense and some big time independence, Her crystal is a ‘Green Adventurine’ showing something thriving in her career circle her Aura too is very ‘Green’ showing signs of nurturing and motherhood.

Well she has hit the big 40 and says she feels great, but i think it cuts like a knife and she’s putting a very good face on, on that subject , the offers for aging products such as wrinkle fillers and creams will poor in now so why she complaining!? Fare play to the girl she does look fab and it is great that she is taking control of herself, turning over a new leaf and mellowing out a bit, I’m seeing her being in some sort of judgement role for T.V., maybe the fashion/ modelling world or a rehab type show, there does seem to be a big love in her life right now as reading her as a person she glows and has that glint in the eye, something tells me she has bought a little bit of paradise and will be spending more time there to settle down. The Tarot i pulled for Naomi is ‘The Lovers’ showing lots of decision making and romance in a very youthful sense, Her crystal is a’ Red Jasper’ helping with regeneration , impulses and help calm mood swings, her Aura is a very tropical ‘Orange’ and reveals escapism!
As they would say in the West Country ‘he’s a bit Bodmin...’ meaning bit of a strange one! A crazy little character and its quite strange reading for him because it goes off in all different directions, even though he starts to be quite open, suddenly you hit a brick wall, he is very spiritual and is interested in opening his mind to new ideas and his beliefs , he is one to wave the scientology flag, some people are quite freaked by this but it is each to their own after all, he is dedicated father and i think a little brother could be on the way for little Suri before long. This old school heart throb still knows how to work his charm to get what he wants and at times though it shows a little too much, but Katie is still hanging on in there so he must be doing something right, you know what they say about little men guys! The Tarot i pulled for Tom is ‘Emperor’ showing someone dedicated to their strengths, very knowledgeable, and will give as much as you want; you just got to ask him the right way! His crystal is’ Snowflake Obsidian’ aiding with mental focus, creative abilities, and intuition His Aura is a ‘pinky Purple’ showing a strong feminine influence, being able to see the good in people and being torn between two loves! .

eddie surman trust
positiveline
... someone to talk to
“
During these difficult financial times voluntary organisations such as The Eddie Surman Trust have been hit badly by the economic downturn as people tighten their belts. The trust relies heavily on advertising throughout the country in specialist publications to promote Positiveline, our national freephone helpline for anyone worried about any issues around HIV/AIDS, especially those who may be feeling depressed or suicidal. Following the closure of UKC & Positive Nation (printed edition) in 2007 the trust saw a drop of almost 50% in calls coming in to Positiveline and at one point closure of the line was being discussed. Since we started advertising in *J@OKP magazine our call levels are the highest they have been for almost 3 years.
0800 1696806
In my opinion this is down to the high quality of the magazine and the fact that it is a magazine that you would happily leave on your coffee table for other people to read. Its longer shelf life (over weekly magazines) means that our advert stays around in people homes much longer and gets a wider audience. At a time when every penny counts, the advertising rates at *J@OKP allows us to take out an advert in every edition of the magazine. Our own research has shown us that calls just within the London area have markedly increased whilst calls from the Brighton area now make up the second largest caller area in the country with many callers telling us they saw our advert in *J@OKP%

I first established myself in small bistro-style pub before moving on to many beautiful restaurants where people came together to ‘Eat, Sip and Celebrate.’ I love the movie Field of Dreams and my favourite line from the film, “Build it and they will come,” plus my passion for all things Hollywood and movie stars, led me to create a theme to my menu.
Now it’s time to let you in on the fine secrets of my success and share my recipes. So let’s eat. Each recipe comes with a name of a Hollywood idol or diva that the meal has been named after, plus whether to serve it as an entrée or main. If you’re confused just have another glass of red and keep cooking…

Place the smoked salmon over the avocado and then the peeled and cooked prawns over the salmon, a little mountain of sea shanty, serve the oysters fresh. The two cooked and unpeeled prawns highlight the platter. Make a side salad of fresh greens, toamto and red onions,
Use a light dressing for the salad and a seafood sauce on the side.

8i\ pfl X ]ljjp \Xk\i6 Up until a few years ago, the list of foods I loathed was a long one. It included radishes, sprouts, aniseed, olives, figs and crab sticks. And that is by no stretch of the imagination an exhaustive lsist. I still hate crabsticks. I will always hate them. The entire French rugby team could serve them to me naked and I still would run a mile. According to experts, we can learn to like foods we currently dislike. Here are 3SIXTY’s top strategies to help you love the foods you hate Make it unrecognizable. Aubergine Purple, mushy and damn ugly, the aubergine appealed to me as much as a night on the town with Adolf Hitler. Then a few years a go, my fiend hid it in her tomato pasta sauce…well, I loved it. Who knew? The trick was to puree it so it didn’t have those awful connotations in my head. Seedy, mushy, and horrifically purple, eggplant appealed to me about as much as a drug-free colonoscopy. Then, in 1997, my friend H hid it in her homemade tomato sauce. And … revelation. Soon, I was on to eggplant dips, eggplant pastas, and finally, plain ol’ broiled eggplant. The trick was getting the image of the vegetable out of my head, and forcing me to associate it with otherwise good food. I suspect it would work beautifully with any vegetable that could be pureed or furtively included in a sauce (butternut squash, bell peppers, etc.). Use it in a recipe with foods you love. Sprouts In my head sprouts were mini, bitter cabbages that masochists ate when they ran out of bigger bitter cabbages. Little did I know that slathering them
in Parmesan would provide a delicious gateway into healthier, simpler preparations. Try it in an ethnic dish Broccoli They look like fungus on trees, and taste pretty much the same, right? I thought that too, but after trying broccoli friend in chilli oil and garlic in the local Chinese restaurant I was smitten. I defy you not to feel the same. Understand you don’t have to eat it the way your parents made it Carrots Too many of us have ended up hating our veggies as our parents boiled them to death, leaving them devoid of any flavour, colour or texture. It’s a revelation when they’re cooked properly.
Give it just one more shot Chickpeas There’s no reason why (as far as I can remember) but I always hated chickpeas. As a child, they looked kinda alien to me. And alien-looking food was nasty food. It wasn’t until I grew up, discovered hummous, which I’ve always loved, was made from them that it dawned on me they’re delicious
If you truly hate it, let it go. Radishes, oysters and crab sticks Oysters will never do it for me, regardless of how fresh they are, how well prepared they are and how many times I eat them. Ditto for crab sticks. And you know what? That’s OK. Al-

This newer incarnation of the original Foxtrot Oscar, isn’t quite as good as the old one…but then how could it? The previous one’s nicotine-stained walls, small, round tables, Sloaney waiting staff, and eccentric clientele made it the perfect Chelsea hangout for decades. Saying that, Gordon Ramsay’s resurrection is not without a certain charm. For starters, you’ll be met a parade of friendly front-of-house staff, who genuinely can’t do enough for you. Seating is either upstairs or in the basement. Don’t head downstairs, if you can help it. The simple menu is brilliantly executed. I tucked into a delicious Caesar salad to start that comes with a poached egg and a couple of slices of crispy bacon. For our mains, my companion and I both ate Cassoulet of Goosnargh duck, comprising a leg and thigh placed on a bed of beans and tomatoes. We had to order side portions (cabbage and spinach) to make sure we wouldn’t leave half-full though. Nowadays, the atmosphere is slightly more contrived and clinical (that’ll be Ramsay’s influence and his longing to control everything, rather than let it all just develop organically) than the original but the food will keep you go back for sure. Sundat Roast is as popular as ever and although the menu changes from time to time the chefs serve up one of Londons best. 79 Royal Hospital Rd, London SW3 4HN www.gordonramsey.com
FOOD ANY TIME WE VISIT bRISTOL WE ALWAYS STOP IN AT BELLA ITALIA
ANY TIME WE VISIT bRISTOL WE ALWAYS STOP IN AT bELLA iTALIA. We started with the Assortimento to share, a large selection of our favourite starters. The bruschetta was fresh and light, and the Buffalo wings were tasty. The formaggio fritto (crumbed and deep fried cheese) was done perfectly, without being too greasy. The portion was large, but enough to leave us waiting for our mains. My collegue once again enjoyed steak, but this time with an Italian twist of garlic butter, mushrooms, fries and rocket. I decided to take a risk with the Penne Marco Polo – pasta with duck, sautéed in plum sauce with spring onion and sliced mushrooms. I was pleased with the sweet aromatic flavour of a lighter pasta dish. As recommended by our charming waiter, we shared an authentic Tuscan red, Chianti Classico that complemented our meal perfectly – especially the plum sauce. No Italian feast could be complete without a lavishing of Dolci – Italian for sweets. After a huge meal a light and fluffy Tiramisu, never fails to please. I finished with a heartier Mascarpone Cheesecake served with tart red berry compote. We left feeling full and satisfied, the food was just as good as Mamma used to make!

BARRY MECHEN PERSONAL WORKOUT Squats Stand with feet hip-width apart and, for added intensity, hold bar at shoulder level. Bend the knees, and lower into a squat, keeping the knees behind the toes. Imagine that you’re sticking your butt out behind you, but keep the torso upright and contracted. Press into the heels to stand up. Stiff Legged Deadlift Pick up a barbell off the ground using power from your legs (not your back). Space your feet slightly narrower than shoulder-width apart and hold the bar with an overhand grip just outside of your legs. Keeping a slight bend in your knees, bend forward at the waist and lower the weight toward the ground. As you lower the weight your lower back should remain arched as this will keep the tension on your hamstrings throughout the entire exercise. Lower the weight down until you feel a full stretch in your hamstrings. It is extremely important that you do not round out your lower back at any point during this exercise but instead maintain a slight arch at all times Upright Rows Start standing, grasp bar at shoulder width or slightly narrower with an overhand grip. Pull upright with elbows leading towards ears and then lower until arms are extended again. Keep barbell close to body, allow wrists to drop at the top of the exercise. Concentrate on pulling with your traps Bench Press Lie flat on a bench, feet firmly on the floor. Make sure that your butt, back, shoulders, and head are firmly positioned on the bench. Roll your shoulders back and down so the shoulder blades are firmly pressed against the bench and the chest is sticking up. With a slightly wider than shoulder width grip and your palms facing forward, lift the bar off the rack and hold it above you with your arms straight up and extended. Lower the bar down to your chest until it either touches your chest or comes within an inch or so away. Do NOT bounce the bar off your chest. Press the bar straight up until arms are extended.

91 EZ Bar Curls Hold Bar, at arms length. Bend your knees slightly and tilt your pelvis forward and keep you glutes tight, in this strict position curl the bar up focusing on using the strength of your biceps, pause briefly at the top and squeeze your biceps hard, lower the bar to the starting position and repeat.Do not move the bar up and down in a jerky or uncontrolled manner. It is very easy to rock your body. To counteract this get a training partner to place their hands on your back during this exercise so that you cannot rock or lean back. Military Press Clean barbell from floor with overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder width. Position bar in front of neck. Press bar upward until arms are extended overhead. Lower to front of neck and repeat. Feet may be positioned shoulder width apart or one foot in front of other with forward leg slightly bent Upper chest assists (instead of side delts) since grip is slightly narrower and chest is high with low back arched back slightly. Bent Over Row Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and lean forward at the hips, not the waist. Your back should be straight and your neck in line with your spine. Grip the bar just wider than shoulder-width apart. Let the bar hang straight down at around knee level. Retract your shoulder blades and tense your core muscles to stabilise your body. Squeeze your shoulder blades together and pull the bar into your sternum. Lower the barbell slowly to the start. Hold your torso steady throughout the move. Triceps Extension Sit on the end of a flat bench width a barbell on your thighs. Grip the barbell with an overhand (Palms facing down) with your hands about shoulder width apart. Bring the bar up to your chest and lay down on your back. Extend your arms straight up above your chest. Keeping your elbows fixed in place and not pointing out, slowly lower the bar until it is about an inch from your forehead. Pause, then slowly extend your arms back to the starting position. Do not lock your elbows out. It’s very important that you keep your elbows in during the set. Your elbows will have a tendency to flare out as you move the weight. 3SIXTY FITNESS

Nottingham Ball Bois
Nottingham Ball Bois win 2010 GFSN Cup Nottingham Ball Bois are GFSN Cup Champions following an as-
tonishing 8-0 win against GFC Bournemouth and Hampshire at the ground of Blue Square South league team, Hampton and Richmond Borough FC. The Nottingham team, described by onlookers as the ‘best ever’ line-up to play in a GFSN match, dominated the game with a nearflawless performance. Presented with a first-minute freekick, man-of-the-match James H placed a high-looping shot into the opposition net. This early lead seemed to stun Bournemouth, and within ten minutes, Oli S and James H again had scored to create an incredible 3-0 lead. Bournemouth provided strong opposition, but Nottingham were quite simply on their game - a team oozing with quality and playing as a unit to their potential. Bournemouth had no way into the game and were being dominated in every area of the pitch. Two more goals were added in the first half, with stand in manager AJ making the scoresheet and Oli S getting his second to take the half-time score to an unassailable 5-0. Bournemouth were stronger in the second half, but Nottingham did not let complacency set in and held their ground firmly. The Ballbois added three more goals in the second half. Chris L and Craig S both finished well to take the game to 7-0, and with a penalty awarded, Gareth D was bought on to put the ball away forcefully for his debut Ballbois goal. The final goal was the 200th Ballbois goal in all competitions, a fitting record with which to wrap-up the cup victory. Overall, Nottingham won with a superb and strong team performance which never let the opposition in with a chance. Nottingham will not retain their GFSN League title this season, but were more than happy to leave Hampton having swapped the league trophy for the GFSN Cup.

GFSN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS LONDON FALCONS
LONDON FALCONS GFSN 2010 League Champions London’s finest travelled north of the border on Saturday hoping to assert their position as the rightful holders of power in this particular contest. Having had 4 weeks to stew on the unfortunate late equaliser by Bournemouth at Old Deer Park in mid-April, which also robbed the league leaders of their unprecedented 100% league record, Falcons went into the game knowing that with their title rivals away at lowly Cardiff Dragons, nothing less than a first ever win on Scottish soil would be good enough to win their 2nd GFSN league title. Falcons committee having agreed on an emergency deal with the authorities on allowing flights to proceed despite the volcanic ash and its deadly threat. As the sun shone for reportedly the first ever time in Scotland and the pasty Jocks had a life-or-death struggle in Poundlands across the capital for the last of the sunscreen, attention turned to the game, Falcons shaded the early exchanges as both teams battled for an early advantage, more than matching the home team’s physical presence and crucially being first to most loose balls. A decent playing surface was also a nice change, and allowed the team to more easily get and keep the ball on the floor when in possession. A number of free kicks were being won by the visitors by virtue of being quicker to the ball, and from one delivery by Walton, Akinola’s challenge caused the home keeper to spill the ball into the path of Falcons’ leading GFSN league scorer Kehoe, but his finishing deserted him for once. Undeterred, Falcons maintained the upper hand, and a simple but incisive passing move starting in their own half opened up the home defence to good effect after 15 minutes to take the lead. With good awareness and movement being showed at every stage of the move, Goulding fed Bryce who in turn looked wide for Latham, and the resulting ball in was controlled and shepherded by Akinola who laid off intelligently for Shaw to finish coolly into the bottom corner. Edinburgh were not without attacking designs of their own, but another Falcons clean sheet would now go a long way to securing the title – and from one defensive intervention as the Scots looked to push forward, a long ball by Walton saw Akinola beat the offside trap, and having put it wide of the keeper, followed up to double the lead and seal an impressive opening half hour for the Londoners.
SPORTS The home side were determined to play, or at least battle their way back into the game, and some of the challenges were becoming ever more tasty, Evans being in receipt of one particularly nasty tackle which could have easily resulted in a red card. No quarter was being asked or given, and as the half progressed the referee became increasingly busy as frustrations began to boil over on both sides. Falcons were still the more dangerous of the two sides, and despite a couple of efforts easily dealt with by Tuffs, the away defence were mainly in control of their opposite numbers. The crucial and at times congested central midfield battle was also being won by the Falcons duo, and width and ball-winning were also being provided well on both flanks in the defensive and more advanced areas. After a number of dangerous dead balls into the Hotscots area, and as the half drew to a close, the self-proclaimed Cesc Walton left the home goalkeeper floundering as he found the top corner with a long-range free kick to increase the lead to 3-0. As the 2nd period started, Falcons knew there was no room for slip-ups, and that more of the same would be needed to keep any chance of a home fightback at bay. Having turned in a valuable contribution, Akinola went off with 25 minutes remaining to be replaced by Johnson who joined his fellow Northerner up front. Not long afterwards Falcons were forced into another change, as Kehoe fell victim to a full-blooded challenge which left him being carried off after a few minutes’ treatment, and a feisty contest threatened to boil over as angry words were exchanged between the sides. McCallum and Johnson now joined Bryce in the centre of the park, with Shaw left as the lone striker. With tiring bodies sapped by the heat and the effort, Falcons were aware that any shift in the scoreline could be crucial, and fought manfully on as the game became more and more concentrated in the midfield, and as the home side had more and more possession and attacking intent. To their credit, the away team’s concentration, speed into the tackle and commitment did not waver, and they repelled the home team time and time again both in open play and from set pieces. As time ticked away, a long clearance found its way eventually to Johnson as the home defence and keeper dithered, and a classy finish into the empty but distant net stretched the Falcons’ lead. The final period saw no let up in the effort from the Edinburgh players, but the miserly defence, supported by the battling midfield and defending from the front, secured a final clean sheet of the season as attention turned at the final whistle to events on the south coast. Confirmation of a 3-1 Bournemouth victory was met with a mixture of elation and relief, as the culmination of 8 months of football saw the GFSN league title return to South West London. Having been pushed all the way by Bournemouth in a season where both sides, in a strong and vastly improved league, remarkably ended up with a record of 10 wins and 1 draw, the whole squad can reflect on a job well done. 39 goals for, 6 against.
